[19:01] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> HI, I’m AJ Schmidt. I have been RPGing since 1978. Ten years ago, I had the pleasure of introducing my son to the world of role-playing with organize-play living worlds.
[19:01] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> We hosted conventions, wrote adventures, and ran events supporting that system… until it all changed. The company came out with a Fourth Edition and forbade us to continue the campaign we all loved.
[19:01] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> Moreover, the new edition resembled miniature gaming more than role-playing. We enjoyed the game for a while, but it left us longing to share the same types of experiences we had growing up.
[19:01] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> Myself and life-long gamer John Teske always tweaked ‘house rules.’ Our friends encouraged us to do more. We wrote a multi-genre skill-based tabletop RPG. After six years of development and three years of play testing, we published UNIVERSAL HORIZONS PLAYERS’ HANDBOOK months ago.
[19:01] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> Players, desperately needing character templates, encouraged us to build and publish BLOODTOOTH VOCATIONS for our first core genre, Bloodtooth.

[19:08] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> The Universal Horizons (UH) system uses d% for skills and d6 for damage. The Player adds their d% to the rank of the skill to reach a target number (TN). A difficult TN is usually TN100, a moderate is TN50, and 25 increment modifiers apply

[19:09] <+Randy> howdy
[19:09] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> hee hee
[19:09] <~Dan> So the game is purely skill based? No classes or levels, correct?
[19:11] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> none, we do have eight abilities that define the core character… Memory & Deduction make MIND, Strength and Dexterity make Body, Faith and Imagination make Soul, Capital and Employability make Wealth
[19:12] <~Dan> And how do those abilities relate to skills?
[19:12] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> MIND, BODY, SOUL, & WEALTH are Resources to take damage or ‘hits’
[19:13] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> for one, abilities can be substituted for skills the character does not have with a two shift penalty… for example:

[19:16] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> No prev exp needed. We even have a basic character that simplifies to a system that uses 16 skills with a d20 … like Aqua falls under Sports.
[19:17] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> We have 8 year olds, college, and old farts like me gaming at the same table having a great time… in fact, the basic char brings some unique advantages to the party.

[19:21] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> Some genres offer different modifier bonuses. The only modifier the core genre allows is a 10% bonus Str damage on melee or thrown weapons
[19:22] *** Randy has quit IRC: Disintegrated: (Link: http://www.mibbit.com)http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client
[19:22] <~Dan> What’s your reasoning behind making that genre-dependent?
[19:25] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> The writer of the genre (or the Guide in home campaigns) has the flexibility to add or modify these rules. For example: Dex modifier (10%) damage added to range attacks is done in one campaign I know of. We, as writers, want the genres to offer their own unique tweaks and feel for the game. The core genres remain very stable, but other worlds may offer
[19:25] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> infinite opportunities that we did not anticipate…. we like that. 😀
[19:26] <~Dan> Cool. 🙂
[19:26] <~Dan> Now, what do you mean by (10%) damage? How does that work?
[19:27] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> An ability modifier (or skill) is 10% of the rank. A Hero with Str 45 gets a Str modifier of +4 damage on melee attacks. we always round down.
[19:28] <~Dan> Do you offer the option of abilities adding to the base skill chance as well?
[19:30] *** Le_Squide is now known as Le_AFK
[19:31] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> We don’t in the core system. Abilities are a ceiling for skill rank and provide more hits in that resource. To get Aqua rank 60, the Hero must have an average or Str and Dex to be 60 (or a body of 120)
[19:31] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> Remember, the ability can substitute as the skill with shifts, so we did not provide a modifier on the skills themselves
[19:33] <~Dan> You touched on this, but can you clarify how the core mechanic works, and expand on how it functions in combat?
[19:35] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> In combat, we use a combat skill, like combat one-handed blade (COHBL). A beginning fighter might have COHBL 30. To successfully attack a creature facing him, he must move to it and declair
[19:36] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> declare an attack. Front facing is TN100 attacking side TN75, and back is TN50.

[19:40] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> Moving recklessly provokes a parting shot, so using half movement, they can cautiously move around their foes. Humans can move 6 spaces, hex or square.
[19:40] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> Armors provide DR (damage reduction) or ER (energy reduction)
[19:41] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> advanced creatures have evasion, but Heroes can only gain evasion from magic or technology items.

[19:45] <~Dan> (Howdy, Silverlion!)
[19:45] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> Combat tricks are skills used in combination with other skills. A fighter with Combat Weapon Trick – Parry1 (CWTRX – parry1) may attempt to parry one incoming attack at TN100.
[19:46] <+Nacyle> Are there modifiers for luck? (I have a bad habit of terribke dice rolls)
[19:46] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> When attacking, he uses this trick in combination when attacking … this invokes skill combination rules, which means all skills used for the same action uses the lowest of the ranks.
[19:47] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> We have two luck mechanics…. one is wild dice the other fortuna… you want fortuna!!!
[19:47] <~Dan> How do those work? 🙂
[19:48] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> Wild dice happens when a natural 100 is rolled on a skill check, the Hero immediately gets to roll another d% and add it to the roll. As the rank goes up, so does the chance for wild dice.
[19:49] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> a ranks of 30 gets wild dice on 100, 99, 98, 97… basically 100 – skill modifier.
[19:49] <~Dan> If it’s based on a natural 100, how does the chance to get one go up?
[19:49] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> A fortuna is good fortune and adds a +50 to any one roll
[19:50] <+BlasterKyubey210> Skill Rank in a field… for example
[19:50] <+BlasterKyubey210> Imagine I have a Lockpick skill of 20, meaning trained (if anything else), my Wild Dice range is 100 to 80 (assuming nothing funny happens)
[19:50] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> a natural 1 always misses.
[19:51] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> skill modifier is 10% of the skill, so Mech (lock picking) 20 has Wild dice on 100. 99. 98. 😀
[19:51] <+BlasterKyubey210> Ok whoops
[19:51] <~Dan> AJofUniversalHorizons: Ah, got it.
[19:52] <+BlasterKyubey210> But the general idea is that as you improve your skill, your Wild Dice range slowly goes up
[19:52] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> Great rolls like this cause great successes, usually in a cinematic interpretation.
[19:52] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> exactly
[19:52] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> also great rolls can cause more damage in combat
[19:52] <~Dan> Speaking of cinematic, how cinematic would you say the system is?

[19:54] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> The justice league, hold out for superman idea…
[19:55] <~Dan> Does having that many skills make character creation difficult?

[19:57] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> We fixed that with BLOODTOOTH VOCATIONS, which offers 60 pre-made skill classes…. like thug, hippie, agent, investigator, or even waitress (who was the star player at Origins this weekend).

[20:42] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> For example a person with a light ability may stunt to create a laser like ability, and then advance that power in similar fashion.
[20:43] <~Dan> So you’re saying that superpowers would be based on spells?

[21:04] <~Dan> Here you go, AJ: (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/2014/06/16/qa-aj-schmidt-universal-horizons/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/2014/06/16/qa-aj-schmidt-universal-horizons/
[21:04] <+xyphoid> do you consider that your patent covers things like importing characters from one computer rpg into another?
[21:04] <+xyphoid> it certainly seems to cover that
[21:04] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> I have no interest in shutting down other systems. I write conspiracy theories; I do not live them. Simply stated.
[21:05] <+xyphoid> are you willing to offer a free license for your patent then
[21:07] <+AJofUniversalHorizons> Nothing is free. I would like some form of recognition for new systems using our mechanic.
[21:07] <+xyphoid> i mean patents on software are pretty controversial and you are claiming, in your patent, rights to ANYTHING related to converting a character from one system or game to another
[21:07] *** Gemini has quit IRC: Disintegrated: My iMac has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…
[21:07] <+xyphoid> dan please make sure this goes into the page too, it’s enormous news
[21:08] <+xyphoid> and i want to link it heh
