I’ve just released a brand new TTRPG called Issliss to Kickstarter! A thousand years ago, humans tried to invade a land of intelligent, dangerous monsters, and they failed. It’s been a thousand years and now humans have to live in a world that wasn’t made for us. It’s a game where you play as a human, and are tasked with survival in a society that has moved past your needs, and caters to a different kind of lifeform. We call it “biopunk”, given that the technology, though similar to steampunk in many ways, operates through the clever application of exotic ‘vitriols’ and elixers, and ‘punk’ because the game revolves around attempting to overthrow the ruling government. [1:18 PM]Julian Kay (ARBco): I’m Julian Kay, a freelancer and indie game designer; I’ve worked for Level 99 Games, Pelgrane Press, Green Ronin, Yaruki Zero, and others. I’ve won awards (Ennies, as part of a team, The Awards 2022, and other smaller contests). This is a full-time job for me, not just a hobby. My big project for the past few years has been Mutants in the Now, a homage to a certain teenage mutant ninja animal game of the eighties, with lots of retro callbacks but also modern updates. I realized that the TMNT game was formative for a lot of folks, but really hadn’t had a dedicated continuation after the license was lost. The first Kickstarter was modestly successful, but it got a lot bigger with Mutants in the Next–which is currently at the printer–a supplement that adds humans becoming animal mutants, randomized “wild” mutations, evil psychic Disney-inspired villains, and like, a laundry list of extra material from fighting styles to psychic powers to, of course, animal species. It’s been a really exciting journey for somebody who’s mainly done little acclaimed-but-still-little games, and I’m looking forward to continuing to support its growing community.
