Well, I’m Sarah Newton, I’m the author of RPGs and adventures like Mindjammer, Legends of Anglerre, Achtung Cthulhu, Chronicles of Future Earth, various short stories and novels, and now our brand new LAIR OF THE LEOPARD EMPRESSES, published by Mindjammer Press, of which I’m director.

[1:08 PM]Sarah Mougenot-Newton: THE LAIR OF THE LEOPARD EMPRESSES is a complete standalone roleplaying game. We’re calling it “superheroic swords & sorcery”. It uses the Monsters! Monsters! game system, under license from Ken St Andre’s Trollhalla Press. Monsters! Monsters! is the sister game to the venerable Tunnels & Trolls, and itself is about as old, dating from the second half of the 1970s. Whereas Tunnels & Trolls was the second ever RPG written, and trod some of the similar ground to D&D, it used a completely different, story-oriented paradigm, and in some ways is the granddaddy of narrative RPGs. Monsters! Monsters! took the T&T premise and turned it on its head, allowing you to play monsters, fighting off the pesky humans that have come to raid your dungeon home!

The other day I’m sittin’ at my desk, when in walks a fella with spiked leather clothes, a big pink mohawk… and a metal arm. Doesn’t even have the common courtesy to knock.

“Let me guess,” I says. “You’re a cyberpunk?”

“Guess again, mother[CENSORED]!!”

“Okay. You’re an [CENSORED]hole?”

“Wrong again!” he says. “I’m a space-punk, here to tell you about Dark Stars.”

“Fine, I’ll bite: What’s space-punk, and what’s Dark Stars?”

“Space-punk is the [CENSORED]ing subgenre of Dark Stars, and Dark Stars is a [CENSORED]ing sci-fi tabletop roleplaying game I’ve brought you to review like a [CENSORED]. It’s got all the cyberpunk goods, but with spaceships and aliens and all that [CENSORED] thrown in.”

“That it?”

“[CENSORED] no! The game’s got supernatural [CENSORED], too. Or it can. Doesn’t have to. You can use it or not. I don’t give a [CENSORED].”

“Sounds good. So, what kinda music does a space-punk listen to?”

“Mostly the Sex Laser Pistols and the Dead Kennedy Space Center.”

They will introduce themselves after I am done. First I’d like to say: We are no English native speakers and are now writing in a non-edited and non-proofread manner, typing very quickly with our 1- or 2-finger methods. I therefore expect lotsa typing and spelling mistakes.

So, what is The Straight Way Lost? The Straight Way Lost is a 400-page book that is one part sourcebook and setting guide for fantasy gaming in a Renaissance that never quite was, and the other part a massive adventure of intrigue, terror and triumph. The adventure for 5e is set in a fantastical version of Italy in 1492 and features a voyage between Heaven and Hell inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. Background chapters detail everyday life in the Italian Renaissance, the worldview of its protagonists and the supernatural aspects, as well as extended character creation guidelines tailored to the setting. Our book is illustrated with 140 full-color artworks by Jana Heidersdorf, Gwenevere Singley and Mark Smylie. The Kickstarter will also offer lots of interesting add-ons like stl-files for miniatures, maps, sound files and custom made characters to enrich the roleplaying experience. I will give over to the other team members.
