Hi, I’m Greg, founder of Blue Oxrat (www.blueoxrat.com) — a role-playing game company that currently focuses on creating new and exciting additions for the TinyD6 line of role-playing games. I’ve recently repatriated to California after spending the last 16 years working abroad.
We recently launched our second Kickstarter: Between Sun & Shadow: Realms of Adventure.
I say “we” because I had an amazing team helping me, including @Brad Lyon, who wrote some of the content and edited the project.
[08-Nov-21 07:32 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
This follow-up to ***Between Sun & Shadow 2E ***is an officially licensed TinyD6 product and includes:
10 new Heritages unique to the World of Siran.
4 new Realms of Adventure that expand the World of Siran. Each of these new lands can act as their own mirco-setting, or you can use them to create globe-spanning campaigns.
65+ new Traits, Prestige Traits, and Drawback Traits to customize your Adventurers.
65+ new creatures to fight or befriend — with expanded descriptions, connections to other monsters, and encounter ideas.
55+ new items and pieces of equipment that showcase the use of Alchemy, Clockwork Technology, and Carving.
120+ Adventure Hooks to help Game Masters create and continue the adventure.
30+ pieces of original full-color art by Grayson Lyon and Isaac Serafini.
Additional ways to use Carving, Between Sun & Shadow’s unique magic system — including new Carving abilities, Carving-infused Martial Disciplines, and options for a Carving Catalyst.
Magic-infused Pneuma Gems that allow Adventurers to commune with the spirits of the fallen to learn from their lifetime of knowledge and borrow their Traits.
New rules for Expeditions and Languages — along with new Environmental Traits — to enhance the exploration of the World of Siran.
Unique NPCs with Traits, Beliefs, Family Trade, and background information.
New Groups and Organizations for Adventurers to join or confront.
We’re estimating the finished book will be 275+ pages. The writing, editing, and art have already been completed. The only thing left to do is the layout and proof process.

Hello Dan And Greg.
[08-Nov-21 07:33 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Hola @Brad Lyon
[08-Nov-21 07:33 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Introduce yourself.
[08-Nov-21 07:34 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
Welcome to Randomworlds, @Brad Lyon!
[08-Nov-21 07:35 PM] Brad Lyon#0473
Long time gamer, first time caller. Lol.
[08-Nov-21 07:35 PM] Brad Lyon#0473
Thank you.
[08-Nov-21 07:38 PM] Brad Lyon#0473
I think the perfect way to describe myself is by what I am doing at the moment. Building Legos with my daughter, Adventure Time on the TV, and talking about RPGs with you all.

[08-Nov-21 07:44 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
What can you tell us about the setting?
[08-Nov-21 07:46 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Well, it’s set in a tidally locked fantasy world known as Siran. The original book focused primarily on one continent known as the Eternal Empire. This new book adds four new lands to explore and expands the setting into a full world.
[08-Nov-21 07:47 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
The standard Heritages from Tiny Dungeon 2E can be found there, along with many(!) new ones. There were 7 in the first book, and the new book adds 10 more.
[08-Nov-21 07:47 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
(brb — please continue)
[08-Nov-21 07:50 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
The setting has its own magic system known as Carving, which replaces the traditional use of spells. There’s also a good helping of alchemy and clockwork tech.
[08-Nov-21 07:50 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
And tons of original monsters!
[08-Nov-21 07:50 PM] Dan Davenport#6715

[08-Nov-21 07:51 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
Speaking of clockwork, what is the overall tech level of the setting?
{Reactions}
👍
[08-Nov-21 07:53 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
We have a mix of clockwork, advanced alchemy, magic that acts like superpowers, and swords, and such. And sometimes they get combined to create potent characters and items.
[08-Nov-21 07:53 PM] Chantel (SHE/HER)#5909
How do the people feel about the Clockwork tech?
[08-Nov-21 07:54 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
The in-setting people?
[08-Nov-21 07:54 PM] Chantel (SHE/HER)#5909
Yes I mean if I played a character that liked that tech would I need to hid that fact?
[08-Nov-21 07:56 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
In general, you would not need to hide that. That said, there are parts of the world and groups of people that are not too excited about clockwork. It would depend on where in the world your character was adventuring. But open hostility would be unusual.
[08-Nov-21 07:57 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
@Brad Lyon’s character in our recent campaign used some clockwork 🙂
[08-Nov-21 07:57 PM] Brad Lyon#0473
And he was amazing. 😃
{Reactions}

[08-Nov-21 07:58 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Caving, the setting’s magic system, is more likely to be hidden by a character because it’s rarer… but that also depends on where you are in the world.
[08-Nov-21 07:59 PM] Brad Lyon#0473
He was a Cogor, which is a heritage introduced in Between Sun & Shadow 2e. They are known to be clockwork savvy.
[08-Nov-21 08:00 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
How common is magic, and how powerful? What can Carving accomplish on the high end of the power scale?
[08-Nov-21 08:00 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
In the fictional history of the setting, Carving (magic) faded from the world, so alchemy and clockwork filled the void. But magic has since returned.
[08-Nov-21 08:00 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
It can get crazy, if the GM wants!
[08-Nov-21 08:03 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
The various types of Carving are loosely described to allow GMs to tailor the power level of the game as they see fit. A powerful use of Space Carving could allow a player to teleport anywhere in the world. Dimension Carving allows one to travel to alternate dimensions/planes of existence. Gravity Carving can squash someone like a bug.
[08-Nov-21 08:03 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
But these are on the extreme end.
[08-Nov-21 08:03 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
A GM can set the maxes as they wish.
[08-Nov-21 08:04 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Pulling something big like that off in combat is tough, but it’s not too hard outside of a fight.
[08-Nov-21 08:06 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
In my recent campaign, Carving was pretty rare. There are areas introduced in the new book where it is much more common, as well as some where it is not used at all. Or almost not at all.
[08-Nov-21 08:07 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
@Brad Lyon had a chance to get into Carving, but he stayed true to his character. He’s a good gamer like that.
[08-Nov-21 08:07 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
You described magic like superpowers. Is that true of all Carving, or are the superpower-like magics a different thing?
[08-Nov-21 08:08 PM] Brad Lyon#0473
It was a hard choice, but I’m still hoping to get ahold of that Time Carving pocket watch some day. 😉
[08-Nov-21 08:09 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
All Carving is similar to a superpower. There are 16 types of Carving. Each one allows a character to affect one element, force, part of “human” nature, etc.
[08-Nov-21 08:10 PM] Brad Lyon#0473
That’s another cool thing about Carving. It can also be imbued into items instead of your character.
[08-Nov-21 08:11 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
It was influenced by Brandon Sanderson’s allomancy. Not the same, of course, but the lineage can be seen.
[08-Nov-21 08:11 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
True. It can be used to make magic items.
[08-Nov-21 08:12 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
What fantasy species are available to play?
[08-Nov-21 08:12 PM] fedcomic#0310

@fedcomic You’ve seen them, too. Have a favorite?

Yep. That’s the one I was going to say too. Love the Isumu.

[08-Nov-21 08:21 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
I like to base my monsters on something found in real life, but twisted and changed to make it wonderous and exciting. Mother nature is crazy, so there’s a lot of inspiration to be found.

The creatures in this book are fantastic! Some are as deadly as they come but others are just doing there thing. However, there thing could end up being dangerous or possibly beneficial to your character.
[08-Nov-21 08:28 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
I’ve tried to create “sets” of creatures that interact with each other to give the sense of an ecosystem.
[08-Nov-21 08:28 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
And every monster comes with plot hooks and encounter ideas.
[08-Nov-21 08:29 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
@Brad Lyon Favorite new monster?
[08-Nov-21 08:32 PM] fedcomic#0310
Briar squirrel!
[08-Nov-21 08:33 PM] fedcomic#0310
Squirrel-sized, flesh-eating, intelligent tangle of thorns!
[08-Nov-21 08:33 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
This is a great example of a creature that interacts with other monsters!
[08-Nov-21 08:33 PM] fedcomic#0310
(This is what Ralph S mouse will ride, by the way.)
[08-Nov-21 08:34 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
It can be deadly to adventurers, but its sap is poisonous to a really big and nasty monster, too. So characters might have a good reason to seek out a briar squirrel.
[08-Nov-21 08:35 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
It’s also an example of the many deadly plants found in the setting.
[08-Nov-21 08:35 PM] fedcomic#0310
Deadly and ambulatory
[08-Nov-21 08:36 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Yes. These plants can chase you!

Generally speaking, who are the PCs, and what do they do?
[08-Nov-21 08:42 PM] fedcomic#0310
Like the Ghost Hounds
[08-Nov-21 08:43 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
There are so many adventures to be had in this setting!!! The new book has over 120 plot hooks, and the first one had more than 100. There are new groups and organizations that players can join or fight.
Want to join the rebellion and take down the One True King? Cool.
Want to fight against a supernatural invasion? Cool.
Want to explore ruins in search of treasure? Cool.
Want to set sail in search of new lands? Cool.
[08-Nov-21 08:44 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
It’s a big ol’ sandbox of a setting waiting to be explored. It allows players and GMs to tell the stories they want to tell.
[08-Nov-21 08:47 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Each of the new realms can be used independently of the others. kind of like micro-settings, or use them to create the full world.
[08-Nov-21 08:49 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
Can you give us some highlights of the varoius realms?

[08-Nov-21 08:52 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
@Brad Lyon Ozra Tima is all yours! As are the Bwa’poda. I’ll dive into Sunspire.
[08-Nov-21 08:54 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Sunspire is in the heart of the Unblinking Sun. It’s crazy hot and the only realm with a single native Heritage, the Aarantzann. Their lizardfolk-type people adapted to the extreme heat. At one time a single nation spanned the entire realm, but the various groups—or Spires—of Aarantzann now battle against each other for control. Inhabitants dedicate their lives to their Spire, hoping to see it reign over a United Sunspire. All of society is organized with military-style ranks for everything from the army to pottery. You can be the General of Pottery.
[08-Nov-21 08:55 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Just off the southern coast of the Eternal Empire in the Sea of Stones, one finds the secretive, underwater realm of Saravesi Tehal. It is home to four Heritages: Kaheks, Rifs, Spars, and Vopakil. This well-organized, advanced society uses and combines the various forms of alchemy, clockwork technology, and Carving to create wonders not seen in other parts of the world.
[08-Nov-21 08:56 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Sailing northward from the Land of Siran through the Sea of Whispers, one may venture to the cold realm of Dakhuven. This territory is populated with the same Heritages found in the Eternal Empire. Dakhuven is a land struggling to survive and rebuild after an apocalyptic invasion known as the Beast Storm.
I think this might be my favorite new realm. I love me some post-apocalyptic fun (in a game, of course).
[08-Nov-21 08:57 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
The Qensirs have forged a secret realm known as Tan-kintana. Its settlements are dispersed throughout the World of Siran, with hidden monastic communes in or near all inhabited regions—and in areas not discovered by other Heritages. The Qensirs are masters of Carving and believe they are the weapons needed to win a war prophesied by the ancients.
[08-Nov-21 08:58 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
(back in a moment)
[08-Nov-21 09:00 PM] fedcomic#0310
I’m interested in how these realms could be imported by other games, other worlds.
[08-Nov-21 09:00 PM] fedcomic#0310
Can you talk a little about that?
[08-Nov-21 09:01 PM] fedcomic#0310
Like the Sunspire, which is literally always day. How would you bring that into a campaign on a planet that has day and night everywhere?
[08-Nov-21 09:02 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
(I’m back)
[08-Nov-21 09:03 PM] Brad Lyon#0473
I am sorry gang but my dad duties are needed. @Gregory Israel can you talk about Ozra Tima in my absence.

Take care, @Brad Lyon!
[08-Nov-21 09:04 PM] fedcomic#0310
Adios, Brad!
[08-Nov-21 09:05 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Hmm… Sunspire would be a tough one to just drop into a standard fantasy world… It could be used as an alternate plane of existence. It could be where players end up after a botched teleportation attempt. Heck, it could even be used to do a version of Hollow World. Man, that takes me back.
[08-Nov-21 09:06 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
As for Ozra Tima… Traveling further south, through the Sea of Stones, brings one to the small tropical realm of Ozra Tima. The geographically unique continent is home to two unusual Heritages, Bwa’podas and Zrrq. Life here is civilized, but less modern than that experienced in the Eternal Empire and Saravesi Tehal.
[08-Nov-21 09:06 PM] Brad Lyon#0473

What is your favorite aspect of this setting?
[08-Nov-21 09:15 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Oh, that’s a tough one…
[08-Nov-21 09:19 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
This might just be because I know all the ins and outs of the setting, but it feels like a living, interconnected world and not just a collection of random bits and pieces. There’s a logic of sorts tying things together — well, as much as one can with a fictional fantasy setting. And I feel like it provides a great setting for a wide variety of different stories to be told.
[08-Nov-21 09:20 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
What is your least favorite aspect of this game?
[08-Nov-21 09:20 PM] Gregory Israel#9019

[08-Nov-21 09:22 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
When building a world, it always feels like there is more to be added. That can be daunting at times.
[08-Nov-21 09:22 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
This book is almost triple the length of the first, and there are already notes for the next one.
[08-Nov-21 09:24 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Finding a balance between adding enough detail to create a world while leaving room for players and GMs to take their game where they want is an interesting tightrope to walk.
[08-Nov-21 09:24 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
A fair point, certainly.
[08-Nov-21 09:25 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[08-Nov-21 09:26 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
One last fun bit of new magic in the new book — Pneuma Gems.
[08-Nov-21 09:26 PM] fedcomic#0310
Oh yes those are super cool
[08-Nov-21 09:28 PM] fedcomic#0310
Crystals with ghosts inside
[08-Nov-21 09:28 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Ghosts are common in this setting, and most of them end up going to the Grand Catacombs to cross over to the other side. Pneuma Gems are Carving-enhanced stones that can house one or more ghosts. Characters can learn to contact these spirits and even learn to use their Traits.
[08-Nov-21 09:29 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
That is cool.
[08-Nov-21 09:30 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
Characters can even embed the crystals in their bodies, like a living shrine. And then they can tap into multiple ghosts’ knowledge and Traits.
[08-Nov-21 09:31 PM] Gregory Israel#9019
And, of course, there is a group that tries to collect and protect Pneuma Gems for the greater good, and a rival group whose members try to create the most potent collection of Pneuma Gems for themselves.
