We’re talking about the latest rpg that Hunters Entertainment has live on Kickstarter now , Gods of Metal: Ragnarock! Gods of Metal: Ragnarock is an Epic Heavy Metal Fantasy RPG celebrating a diverse cast of characters within the dual worlds of the Mundania and Ragnarock. In the world of Mundania, a land similar to ours, even boring mortals have a chance of redemption.
Characters claim fealty to one of the 6 metal gods, and form an adventuring band, to take on the roles of Brutalizers, Shredders, Noisemancers, and even Amplords as characters find adventure and glory in a Heavy Metal Inspired world. The game includes a music album starring well-known legendary label rock bands as well!

@saintnexan Depending on the stretch goals that we reach Gods of Metal: Ragnarock will feature three heavy metal albums, Gods of Metal, Avatars of Metal and an Original Soundtrack.
Gods of Metal (which comes with the game with the pledge level), features an original song for the game from Carla Harvey (Butcher Babies) and Charlie Benante (Anthrax) titled “Born Into Death”, inspired by one of the Gods of Metal in the game. In addition the LP includes music from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
nominee Motorhead, as well as Icon For Hire, Gygax, and Indian Street Metal band, BloodyWood, released for the first time on vinyl. It also includes “These Gallows” a previously unreleased single from Chris Jericho’s Fozzy.

Setting expectations with your players is the first step and then determining how you want to use the rules system will set your path. Ragnarock is designed to–if you wish–allow for ZERO MM (Metal Maestro) PREP, if you chose to hang close to the guidelines in the core rulebook.

Abilities differ, it depends on which God of Metal your character has chosen and also the Player Position (our term for Player Class). But there are very wild ones, such as Disintegration if you follow Aznubabba (the God of Chaos and madness) or if you follow Killamity (the God of Death and Sorrow). There’s alot to choose from and it’s the best mix and match value meal ever

Other abilities for Player Positions include Dimensional Door (Shredder, magical musicians), Reputation Boost (Bludgard, badass healers), Summon A Crowd (Howler, summoners), to either take damage for you, deal out some damage or to bask in your own glory to amp up for a fight…lol there are ALOT

Think of Notoriety as a LEVEL. That said it is a scale that slides both ways. Your power levels may rise and fall as a GROUP since this game is very much about table collaboration. You may very well hate each other as characters but your FATE is tethered to the people that you are adventuring with in a way that I have never seen in effectively spotlighted in an RPG.

Think more Brutal Legend for tone of the game. Bombastic, and as huge as you want it to be. If your party wanted to get grim with it you could (you could have an entire party that follows Kilamitty the God of Death & Sorrow for instance), either way the game really shines when your group cuts loose and turns the volume up to 11

And EQUIPMENT, SUMMONED PETS, and VEHICLES are more crucial and intertwined to your characters than most other games. Think of the Sword of Grayskull, Silver Surfers SurfBoard, and Tank Girls Tank.

What was the design process for the gods of metal? It strikes me that most of them line up pretty well thematically with at least one metal subgenre (power metal for Diomiedius, death metal for Killamity, glam metal for Shrieka, etc.), but for the most part they’re not specifically gods of that genre – is that a deliberate choice?

I once asked Ivan if I could tame and ride a monster that we were fighting, it was a Giant Buyat Worm. His answer was vigorous head nodding Yes and laughing. There’s mechanics to beseech your God for help with huge actions as well

You are right on target there. However, I have run and played in total clown sessions and in brooding Black Metal dramas. Nothing really is too serious though. This game is fun and a true love letter to Heavy Metal (the graphic novels) and Heavy Metal (the music)

The design process sprang from a love of all things Heavy Metal. After Metalocalypse and Brutal Legend came out by Double Fine, Ivan Van Norman loved that world so much and was so bummed to see it end, that the seed for Gods of Metal: Ragnarock was planted. That seed was watered and given life after he read the book called ‘Kings of the Wyld’, and the sequel ‘Bloody Rose’. It clicked for him, what to take seriously and NOT take seriously. So you’ll find the Gods to be inspired by various different types of Metal

Mundania is–again–sort of the most boring realm in the cosmos. Think of the DMV if it was endless and eternal. This is worse than Purgatory or Hell….this place has nothing of interest in it. It is meant to be efficient and clean and orderly. When you are cast into Mundania, you are asked to narrate your personal torment with hilarious effects. There are some mechanical thresholds that must be met to allow you to regain your fury and reenter the Lands of Ragnarock. Think of time-out and having to count yourself back in for dodgeball.

Opposition depends on the campaign, and also which world you are in, in Mundania (the “normal” world, a grayer version of ours where you are a cog in a machine overshadowed by an inhuman force) or Ragnarock. Opposition in Ragnarock can take the form as huge as a Big Monster Bad, or THE MAN or more

The villains in the setting are varied but you don’t want the power of the gods to falter and you are striving to become one yourself. Weeeeeelllllllll. As EPIC as your Avatar is in Ragnarock, until they level up to darn near close to God-like status, they still have to deal with the Meat Sack they exist in. Take too much damage without taking care of your Meat Sack, and that Avatar can get permanently booted out of Ragnarock. Forever. Leveling is based on the group but you carry your Notoriety and Glory with you individually. You gain “XP” in a session and it is determined by the group dynamics and synergies but if you then take that character to a different group, you start with your current set as it was…it can then increase or decrease based on the adventure. It’s like if Alice Cooper plays a set with Cannibal Corpse, people start looking up Cannibal Corpse and they get a bump in Notoriety.

Also, when it comes down to it, we wanted EXTREMELY quick and fluid game mechanics that let the complications come from the character choices and the way that you stack abilities with your BAND MATES, D4s, the way that we use them, are binary. And you are constantly rolling a TON of D4s and trading and swapping results in-between shared and group pools. It makes the table very kinetic and fun as you match results and negotiate your successes and failures.

At a notoriety of 0 (beginning level of your character), you’ll need a minimum of 5 d4s. Each of your attributes are capped at 4 dice to roll (if you max it out). 4s count as Tribute (successes) you can use them to buy narrative successes, special abilities, do damage, or save some for bandmates to use later!
1s count as Feedback (failures), generate too much feedback in your feedback threshold and your Avatar will temporarily get booted out of Ragnarock back into Mundania until they become Epic enough again to get back into Ragnarock.
There’s a Tribute pool or shared successes that the entire party can use. The numbers 2 & 3 don’t count for anything, only 4s and 1s.

The synergies with your group? If we are still discussing combo-effects, if you don’t blow your entire wad in one round, it can be sustained depending on the situation but most effects in Ragnarock are explosive and quick. You’ll have to try it but cumbersome is not on the menu in most places, I suspect that people will find it VERY quick and intuitive. To be honest, we are constantly seeking ways to maintain enough crunch for the crunch crowd.

It’s a music rights issue with the Gods of Metal vinyl, it is unique to this project only. Due to the fact that many of the songs are unreleased and/or will be making their first appearance to the world on this Vinyl.
However! The Avatars of Metal CD will have a digital release. The $300 pledge level includes a chance for indie bands to be included in the project. Key groups will be announced during the campaign, but bands have an opportunity to submit their own tracks.

The music was not a cheap add-on for us but it was almost an after thought and not something that any game company would be able to offer normally. We just happen to have a LOT of connections with the music world and got really lucky to gather this sort of support. We are are very proud of it. That said, we have music that comes in the Avatars CD and the Rezodrone soundtrack if we hit the stretch goal.

It’s zone based combat – so no hexes or grids, but most of the abilities and a lot of the ‘player progression’ is combat focused. This game is about doing amazing things, and a lot of that is done in combat.

The abilities are the real customization in the game, the combos as Nox is talking about are all in skills/abilities. They seemed to add a unnecessary level of crunch to the ‘fast and loose combat’ style game we’re going for.

Here is a loose example, you have a Howler (Murder bard) and a Amplord (Techie) fighting a monster together, each of them have individual powers but if they work together they can combine the effects and deal more damage. The Howler uses a POWER SCREAM and the Amp Lord uses a CRANK ability to double the effectiveness of Tributes used from the Tribute Pool.

Or even as a solo set – An avatar gets 3 tributes in a round, so can activate three of their abilities (flying, elemental damage, and speed boost) so that you could leap into the air, fly across the battlefield and hit the baddie from the back with your fire damage (maybe it’s a lava javalin? sure!)

Your Gear, which is your Weapon/Instrument, Outfit, and Accessory, each have an ability you choose attached to them (well starting at Notoriety 0, just one to start with). You get to make up whatever that Gear looks like, because all of the Gear will have the same baseline stats to begin with.

Most enemies have preset abilities and triggers and you build encounters based on the challenges that you want your players to face. Once an encounter begins, the BAND decides on their internal order of operation and the players make the majority of the dice rolls, the MM can determine how events play out but also handles all of the randomization and effects that can hamper the characters as they try to defeat foes.

A lot of things in the game are based on triggers and effects and matching combos and situations. If the players have FEEDBACK and you want to use a real powerful monster ability, you take FEEDBACK from them and trigger it. Again, a loose example.

It’s a real personal process and throughout all of Ragnarock the surface level theming is fully up to the player. It’s one of the reasons we ditched the idea of sticking to the typical attribute/skill baseline. Your strength is described and show through your gear and skills, as is your intelligence and charisma. If you want to be a Crocodile in spandex pants that wields a battle-axe that is also a keytar. Go for it.

Personally, I guess my least favorite aspect is that it’s hard for me to choose which world I prefer to play in, Mundania or Ragnarock. Both are incredibly cathartic in their own way. Luckily enough with my bombastic hell-in-a-hand-basket play-style I do get to spend time rebelling in both of them

I love that players and MM (Metal Maestro) are working together to build bigger and more wild situations and scenarios together in an environment that mechanically rewards collaborations and team play in a simple, kinetic way. That players can be ANYTHING and still find a way to make the rules work with that and the entire game feels like you start out at a LEVEL 20 character in other systems but that you don’t have to worry about the glut of LEVEL 20 rules slowing you down…..

Think of resonance like experience points for your weapons, you get enough residence and it levels up. Unlocking more abilities or better attributes
kind of like how legendary weapons work in D&D. But they’re on a different track than you are as a god. It’s a difference between having a hammer, and then having mjolnir.
