8:40 PM +ChrisMillerGames: So, my name is Chris Miller and I’m an indie tabletop game designer living in Atlanta GA.
8:41 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I only have two games out currently….an RPG called ANKUR and a political card game titled: Collusion
8:42 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I just published a new suppliment to ANKUR, titled: Land of the first people…aka the Mundwazi sourcebook. It details ancient mythological Africa.
8:43 PM +ChrisMillerGames: For those who don’t know, my rpg is focused on ancient history and the ancient astronaut theory.
8:44 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I was a historian and am still active in a few historical reenactment groups and worked in the medical field for 15 years before starting Chris Miller Games
8:44 PM +ChrisMillerGames: (done)
8:44 PM ~Dan: Thanks, ChrisMillerGames! The floor is open to questions!
8:45 PM ~Dan: I know we had a previous Q&A on the subject, but perhaps you should recap the contents of the core rulebook briefly?
8:45 PM +jeff_76: I love your first game. I always play a Dubsar. can you still play them in the africa expansion
8:46 PM +ChrisMillerGames: sure, so ANKUR – kingdom of the gods is the title of the first book. It is 333 pages and details the land of Shinar (ancient Iran/Iraq).
8:47 PM +ChrisMillerGames: The game is set 25,000 years in Earth’s mythological past.
8:48 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Aliens from the planet Nibiru…in search of gold….come to earth and create the human race to mine the gold for them. They establish cities and get the populace hooked on beer and sports and money to keep them from rebelling.
8:49 PM +ChrisMillerGames: There is a great cataclysm and one of earth’s two moons at the time left orbit, causing a massive world-wide flood that destroyed much of what the aliens built.
8:50 PM +ChrisMillerGames: A few thousand years later, the aliens return, but not all of the humans want to return into slavery.
8:51 PM +ChrisMillerGames: The timeline the PCs occupy is full of politics and intrigue between both human and alien city states vying for control of natural resources.
8:51 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Human cities are attempting to dig up pre-flood ruins to find ancient tech….like robots and ray guns to fight the aliens with.
8:52 PM +ChrisMillerGames: the game uses a unique D12 system
8:52 PM ~Dan: (Howdy, Eric_E!)
8:52 PM +Eric_E: heya Dan!
8:52 PM +ChrisMillerGames: there are no class levels in this game, but there are skill levels
8:53 PM +ChrisMillerGames: stats range between 1-5 and skills 1-9
8:54 PM +ChrisMillerGames: a character’s APN…action potential number is derived from adding together their skill number and corresponding stat. Roll this number or less to succeed. a 12 is always a crit fail….a 1 is always a success, but never a crit, and the exact APN is a crit success.
8:54 PM +ChrisMillerGames: (Done)
8:55 PM ~Dan: Thanks, ChrisMillerGames! So what’s going on in Africa during this time period?
8:55 PM +ChrisMillerGames: @Jeff yes you can still play a Dubsar and in fact they have a new sub-class called an Induku-Iya….travelling judge/executioner
8:56 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Well, a lot more than I was prepared for
8:56 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I thought this book was going to be 150 pages….it ended up being 340
8:56 PM ~Dan: Wow!
8:57 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Ancient Africa was a melting pot of cultures and religions
8:58 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Ofcourse I couldn’t put every culture in the book, many of the most well known tribes, religions, heroes etc….didn’t exist 25K ago
8:58 PM * ~Dan nods
8:59 PM +ChrisMillerGames: But there are chapters on Atlantis…yes it is in Africa….Egypt, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Gana, Ethiopia to name a few
8:59 PM ~Dan: Were the aliens as active in Africa as they were in the Middle-east?
9:00 PM +ChrisMillerGames: As the books sub-title suggests….Africa is in my game, the land of the first people. It is where the gods first mined gold and where they found the primitive hominids that they genetically enhanced to create the human race
9:00 PM +ChrisMillerGames: (done)
9:01 PM +GenoFoxx: this might be a different tangent where they doing anything on Mars?
9:01 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Oh, just saw 2nd Q
9:01 PM +ChrisMillerGames: yes…
9:01 PM +GenoFoxx: were
9:02 PM +ChrisMillerGames: In fact the earliest records of middle-eastern mythology state that man came from southern Africa.
9:02 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Many of the Sumerian gods and heroes travelled there
9:03 PM +ChrisMillerGames: There are several long stories in the book that detail the creation of man and some of the interactions between the gods of Sumeria and Africa.
9:04 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Remember, these alien gods are of the same species and planet
9:04 PM +ChrisMillerGames: (Done)
9:05 PM ~Dan: (Did you see GenoFoxx’s question, ChrisMillerGames?)
9:05 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I don’t understand it
9:05 PM ~Dan: As I understand it, he wants to know if the aliens were active at all on Mars.
9:05 PM ~Dan: (wb, jeff_76!)
9:07 PM +ChrisMillerGames: oh, sorry……yes . There are bases on Mars and the moon….though I haven’t written anything for them as of yet. There is a book planned that will detail these bases and the alien homeworld.
9:07 PM ~Dan: Really? Interesting.
9:08 PM +ChrisMillerGames: However, the very next book will be about the northern Aratta mountains and will feature the Cimmerians, pterodactyl riding barbarians and a decadent black sea culture.
9:08 PM ~Dan: Ooooo!
9:08 PM +ChrisMillerGames: It will be something of a Frazetta fire & ice omage
9:08 PM ~Dan: Awesome!
9:09 PM +GenoFoxx: will you do a book on India?
9:09 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Touching on Mars again for a moment….
9:10 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Lord Alalu….exiled userper and enemy of the rightful king of this solar system: ANU…..lives on Mars with his followers. He also has a cult on earth that is still loyal to him.
9:12 PM +GenoFoxx: are the aliens the Annunaki? or are they another species?
9:12 PM ~Dan: Sorry about that! Lost my connection.
9:12 PM ~Dan: Last thing I saw: 9:10 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Lord Alalu….exiled userper and enemy of the rightful king of this solar system: ANU…..lives on Mars with his followers. He also has a cult on earth that is still loyal to him.
9:14 PM +GenoFoxx: <+ChrisMillerGames> Mars is where the biblical “watchers” were said to live before they fell/came to earth and married human women against the will of the gods.
9:14 PM +ChrisMillerGames: They are what most people wrongly call the Anunnaki. They are comprised of multiple species of humanoids living either on Nibir (planet) or Nibiru (name for planet and all its satellites).
9:15 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Anunnaki can be translated to mean “earth progeny of Anu”
9:15 PM +ChrisMillerGames: some people claim it mmeans from heaven to earth fell…..that’s bunk
9:16 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Anu was castrated by Alalu and could not have children….when he came to earth, he adopted human children and instructed them in the alien ways of civilization and made them kings
9:16 PM +ChrisMillerGames: (done)
9:17 PM +GenoFoxx: ouch
9:18 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Does anyone have any mechanics questions?
9:18 PM ~Dan: As I recall, there’s nothing truly supernatural in this setting, correct? If so, how did you incorporate the myths of Africa?
9:18 PM ~Dan: Actually, yes, re: mechanics… Is 1-5 the full range for attributes, or just the human range?
9:19 PM +ChrisMillerGames: right….there is no “magic” in this game. Everything is explained through either psionics or high technology.
9:20 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I approached African myths and legends the same as I would those of other parts of the world.
9:20 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I ofcourse did my best to respect the culture and religion
9:21 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Many of their mythologies lend well to a sci-fi theme
9:22 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I don’t think I found a single ancient African god that they themselves didn’t porport to have come from the stars or even other planets
9:22 PM ~Dan: Huh. I hadn’t heard that. Cool!
9:22 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Many of their tales speak of heroes wielding rods that shot fire/light at enemies and could set houses on fire
9:23 PM ~Dan: Would that make them hot rods?
9:24 PM +ChrisMillerGames: they speak of flying chariots and magical/high tech ornaments or medallions that make them fly or ward off weapon strikes etc.
9:25 PM +ChrisMillerGames: one west african senegal tribe believes there were once a race of dwarves nearby that lived in the earth but came from the stars. they had gauntlets that could levitate and perform tasks for them
9:25 PM ~Dan: Wow, awesome!
9:27 PM ~Dan: Does your book feature these dwarves?
9:27 PM +ChrisMillerGames: virtually none of the african gods look like them or even come from earth. Most are “Bakuezi” or sky-people/bird people. They are said to have had white skin, white hair and glowing blue eyes! Similar descriptions come from Sumerian gods
9:28 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Yes, the dwarves are mentioned in both books, but I plan on detailing them in the upcoming book on outer space
9:28 PM +ChrisMillerGames: (done)
9:28 PM +GenoFoxx: this reminds me of certain interpretations of the Mahabharata
9:29 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Yes….that will be its own book too….if I can get to it.
9:29 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I used to live in India and am very familiar with the Mahabharata
9:29 PM +ChrisMillerGames: In fact, the ships in my game are called “Vimana”
9:30 PM +ChrisMillerGames: (done)
9:30 PM ~Dan: (Did you see my earlier system question?)
9:31 PM +ChrisMillerGames: the dwarves?
9:31 PM +ChrisMillerGames: or hot rods? lol
9:31 PM ~Dan: Heh. No, the question about the attribute scale.
9:32 PM +ChrisMillerGames: ok…..1-5 is just the PC range for stats
9:32 PM +ChrisMillerGames: it goes up to 10, but those numbers are reserved for creatures, dinosaurs, some aliens etc.
9:33 PM +ChrisMillerGames: The alien races are generally smarter and stronger than us
9:33 PM +ChrisMillerGames: it is a bit like Superman and planet Krypton.
9:34 PM +ChrisMillerGames: They have increased strength on earth and purposefully created us with limited potential, so as to better control us
9:34 PM +ChrisMillerGames: that is why we only use 10% of our brain etc
9:34 PM * ~Dan nods
9:35 PM ~Dan: How does the availability of alien tech in Africa compare to that in the MIddle-east?
9:35 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Ofcourse, players can increase stats through spending experience and use of Mana
9:35 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Mana is made of mono-atomic gold
9:35 PM +ChrisMillerGames: It is a bit like spice in Dune
9:36 PM +ChrisMillerGames: it enhances physical and mental attributes for a limited time
9:36 PM +ChrisMillerGames: It also has industrial applications….like it is used to power Vimana etc
9:37 PM +ChrisMillerGames: It is the reason the aliens are here mining gold. They hope to use it to save their dying world.
9:37 PM +ChrisMillerGames: They are experiencing extreme climate change and are losing their atmosphere….they spread the Mana in the upper atmosphere and its electro-magnetic properties act as a shield.
9:38 PM +ChrisMillerGames: that is why they are so hell-bent on mining earth and enslaving people to do it.
9:38 PM +ChrisMillerGames: (done)
9:39 PM +ChrisMillerGames: availability of tech?
9:39 PM +ChrisMillerGames: It is fairly common in a few big cities, like Zimbabwe, Rostau (Cairo) and Atlantis
9:40 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Most of Mundwazi however, is very low tech. Stone- bronze age.
9:40 PM ~Dan: Atlantis is a city?
9:41 PM +ChrisMillerGames: The major cities have space ports and are huge centers for trade for their regions
9:43 PM ~Dan: Is Atlantis an island?
9:43 PM +ChrisMillerGames: with so many aliens working or travelling to/from these cities to manage the gold shipments, there are naturally more facilities there to cater to the aliens. So, they might have high-tech medical facilities, the guards might have ray guns, and people may commute to work in Vimana taxis. While the average person in the bush lives in a mud hut and
9:43 PM +ChrisMillerGames: carries a spear etc.
9:44 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Atlantis: Yes, Atlantis is an island in the sahara…..which was a sea until about 10k yrs ago
9:45 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I have done extensive research on this and have come to personally believe that Atlantis was a real place and was located in the Rechat circle of the sahara in Mauritania
9:47 PM +ChrisMillerGames: That area was under water in the past and there is a rock formation in the circle that is comprised of concentric rings that match the exact measurements given by Solon 5,000 yrs ago
9:47 PM +ChrisMillerGames: So, in my game, Atlantis is located in NW Africa
9:47 PM +ChrisMillerGames: (done)
9:49 PM +ChrisMillerGames: to be specific, Atlantis is an island city-state. It controls a lot of land surrounding the sea it is in.
9:49 PM * ~Dan nods
9:50 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Though this territory is being contested by the Amazons
9:50 PM +ChrisMillerGames: called the Amazig in my game
9:50 PM ~Dan: What’s the story behind the Amazons in this setting?
9:51 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Amazig is their original name and there really was/is a tribe of warrior women called the Amazig in north africa
9:52 PM +ChrisMillerGames: So, I leave the details of their origin to GMs….though I give several possible origins. This is because historical records or “myth” omit their origins too.
9:53 PM ~Dan: How many new creatures do you introduce in this book?
9:53 PM +ChrisMillerGames: They are a fierce tribe of warrior women in north Mundwazi that practice a form of extreme matriarchy.
9:54 PM +ChrisMillerGames: They have been at war with Atlantis for generations
9:54 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Creatures: 19 I believe
9:54 PM +ChrisMillerGames: that includes playable and non-playable
9:55 PM ~Dan: Which ones are playable?
9:55 PM +ChrisMillerGames: there are 6 new playable species…..mostly anthropomorphic reptiles…..
9:56 PM +ChrisMillerGames: after the first book, I had a lot of requests for non-human races….
9:56 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Since African mythology is chock full of anthropomorphic creatures….I included as many as I could
9:57 PM +ChrisMillerGames: you can play a chameleon….yes you can disappear predator style….but they are pacifists
9:57 PM +ChrisMillerGames: you can play snake people (venomous options too),
9:58 PM +ChrisMillerGames: there are the Nahash…..referring to biblical lizard/crocodile men
9:59 PM +ChrisMillerGames: you can play a species known as the Chura….which are frog people (bullywugs)
9:59 PM +ChrisMillerGames: there are also dog and cat people…..so you can be a panther or werewolf-like character
10:00 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I was a huge Thunder-cats fan in the 80s
10:00 PM ~Dan: Heh. 🙂
10:00 PM ~Dan: Nice.
10:00 PM +ChrisMillerGames: (done)
10:01 PM ~Dan: What is that elephant snake critter on the cover?
10:02 PM +ChrisMillerGames: lol….South Africans would call that a “Grootslang”
10:03 PM +ChrisMillerGames: it is a mythological creature …much like Nessie or bigfoot…that goes back to ancient times
10:03 PM ~Dan: Where do monsters like that come from?
10:04 PM +ChrisMillerGames: They are one of the top most well known African crypto creatures
10:04 PM +ChrisMillerGames: so I had to put it in the book
10:05 PM +ChrisMillerGames: they are called the Amsi-mush-mah…..elephant-snake-mighty
10:05 PM ~Dan: Do you include the m’kele mobembI(sp?)?
10:05 PM +ChrisMillerGames: ancient languages sounded like Yoda speak
10:06 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Yes I did…it is on p297
10:06 PM +ChrisMillerGames: it is basically just a Brontosaurus
10:07 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I did a lot of research for it by re-watching the Disney film “Baby”
10:07 PM ~Dan: Cool. 🙂
10:08 PM ~Dan: What is a typical adventure like in Africa?
10:11 PM +ChrisMillerGames: well, the GM/players will have to decide if they want to spend most of their time in one of the major cities or exploring the wild. The cities have a lot to offer story-wise. I really detailed every aspect of them that I could, and each business has 1 or more adventure hooks. This typically is best suited for players who are Dubsar (scribes),
10:11 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Irhandi (psions)or Naru (thieves)
10:13 PM +ChrisMillerGames: When players go out adventuring in the wild, they are typically doing so to travel/escort someone to another city, or exploring the wild to find lost pre-flood ruins, or maybe to hunt/capture a rare beast.
10:13 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Just like the cities, each region is detailed and provides places of interest and plot hooks galore
10:13 PM +ChrisMillerGames: (done)
10:15 PM ~Dan: What sorts of new tech do you introduce in this book?
10:17 PM +ChrisMillerGames: hmmm….I introduce several new African weapons, but they are low tech. In Atlantis they mine a special ore called Urikhalkun…
10:17 PM ~Dan: What does Urikhalkun do?
10:18 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Urikhalkun is an iridescent red in color and has many of the properties of fine brass. It is sometimes mixed with Mana to make an alloy that grants bonuses to spirit saves.
10:19 PM +ChrisMillerGames: in ancient times it was said to be more valuable than gold
10:19 PM ~Dan: How common are dinosaurs in your Africa?
10:20 PM +ChrisMillerGames: the Atlas mnts in Mauritania (where I think Atlantis was) has a red ore that is a type of copper mixed with red pigments
10:20 PM +ChrisMillerGames: ah…dinosaurs
10:20 PM +ChrisMillerGames: well, dinos do exist in my game…in many continents, but are very rare
10:21 PM ~Dan: And mammalian megafauna?
10:21 PM +ChrisMillerGames: the m’kele mobembe are nearly extinct in the game and pterosaurs are only found in large numbers in a handful of remote areas
10:22 PM +ChrisMillerGames: mammalian megafauna?
10:22 PM ~Dan: Yes, mammoths and ground sloths and saber-tooth tigers and such.
10:23 PM +GenoFoxx: urikhalkun=orichalchum?
10:23 PM +ChrisMillerGames: oh yeh, they all exist….although technically, sloths and sabertooths were only supposed to exist in the Americas….eh, its a game
10:24 PM +ChrisMillerGames: urikhalkun=orichalchum? Yes, same
10:24 PM +ChrisMillerGames: I use the Sumerian language of Eme-gir as the Alien tongue of Nibiru
10:24 PM +GenoFoxx: what no terror birds?
10:25 PM +GenoFoxx: for riding and dinner?
10:25 PM +ChrisMillerGames: The aliens tought language to the earthlings….this is before the tower of babel and all that stuff, so we all spoke the same language….even in Africa or greece
10:26 PM +ChrisMillerGames: lol….yes there are Terror birds in the first book
10:26 PM ~Dan: Huzzah!
10:26 PM ~Dan: In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
10:26 PM +ChrisMillerGames: another interesting creature/plant unique to africa is the Balahu-gaz or “aromatic tree of death”
10:27 PM +ChrisMillerGames: it uses sweet nectar to lure unsuspecting prey, they wraps its tendrils around it and strangles them
10:27 PM +ChrisMillerGames: hmm….
10:27 PM ~Dan: Nice. 🙂
10:28 PM +ChrisMillerGames: well, we could go on for hours about the mechanics……
10:28 PM +ChrisMillerGames: let me sum up a few things
10:29 PM +ChrisMillerGames: PCs get good karma points….you can cash them in to re-roll failures etc., but the GM gets a bad karma point to make you re-roll successes later.
10:30 PM +ChrisMillerGames: if you die in this game, you can continue playing as a ghost
10:31 PM +ChrisMillerGames: you get a whole new tree of skills devoted to walking through walls, flying, possessing others etc. However, ghosts are vampiric and must feed or they fade away and die permanently.
10:31 PM +ChrisMillerGames: there are several non-combat character types…like the scribe for example
10:31 PM +GenoFoxx: what is a ‘ghost’ in your game?…psychic residue?
10:32 PM +ChrisMillerGames: scribes in this game can be very powerful…they are the liaisons of the gods and are the only characters who can read/write
10:35 PM +ChrisMillerGames: a ghost in my game is a spiritual entity that occupies a space between dimensions. They are not corporeal, but can learn to interact with our realm. There are supernatural predators in that ethereal realm as well that may try to feed upon unsuspecting ghosts
10:35 PM +ChrisMillerGames: it is explained better in the book than I think I have time for here
10:36 PM +ChrisMillerGames: (done)
10:36 PM ~Dan: Thanks very much for joining us, ChrisMillerGames!
10:36 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Thank you Dan
10:36 PM ~Dan: Usual reminder: If you’ve enjoyed this Q&A and would like to treat me to a coffee or two, you can do so at (Link: https://www.ko-fi.com/gmshoe)https://www.ko-fi.com/gmshoe . Anything’s appreciated! 🙂
10:37 PM ~Dan: If you’ll give me just a moment, I’ll get the log posted and link you!
10:37 PM +ChrisMillerGames: Thanks!
