[1:02 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Hi fellow roleplayers! This is Alex, president at TIN HAT GAMES and today we are here to talk you into our next project launching on Kickstarter on the 31st of Jenuary: The True OSR: Obsolete Shitty Rules !!! A crazy never seen before old school parodic ttrpg…wanna know more? I’m the game designer behind this and all of our previous games ( #UrbanHeroes and Xenoscape) and I’m here to answer all your questions (done)
[1:03 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Thanks, @AlessandroRivaroli! The floor is open to questions!
[1:04 PM]Dan the GMshoe: What can you tell us about the premise of the game?
@Dan the GMshoeWhat can you tell us about the premise of the game?[1:07 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Ok then! In this game you get the UNIQUE possibility to confront your main enemy…the DM himself (or the annoying players if you are the DM of course)! At the end of each game you gonna face a final battle against your evil counterpart and get your revenge and the DM will have meta-narrative powers too! About the design we took everything coming from the old school genre and turned it upside down or extrmised it…an example? let me post our programmatic document eheheheh
[1:07 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: can I drop links and/or pics ?
[1:08 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Certainly!
[1:09 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: does this ring any bell for y’all OSR fanatics like me? 1
[1:09 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tinhatgames/the-true-osr-obsolete-shitty-rulesKickstarterComing soon: The TRUE OSR – Obsolete Shitty RulesTake your revenge against the DM thanks to The True OSR, a parodic old-school RPG spawned from the most ridiculous gaming experiences!
[1:12 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: here’s also the link to our page where you can download the free SICKstart of the game: let me tell you this game will also feature a soundtrack (vinyl in its deluxe version) and an APP!!! Yeah we actually started coding an app that will let you randomize eveything insted of rolling many dice for instant results! Did I mention this is compatible with most of the OSR ttrpg around? (done) (edited)
[1:13 PM]Dan the GMshoe: (No need for a (done) after every comment. We used to do it that way but haven’t for a while now. )

[1:13 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Is the setting more-or-less “traditional” fantasy?
@Dan the GMshoeIs the setting more-or-less “traditional” fantasy?[1:16 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Good question! The game will feature EVERY setting you can think of! The game itself features more than 40 tables with 100+ results in them including the WORLDS table so you can set your adventure in a cyberpunk, fantasy, horror, western, etc setting…or maybe just randomize it! This game is perfect for one shot no preparation gaming nights indeed (it also features a 100+ results ARCHETYPE table with as many pregen characters! Gosh!)
[1:17 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Superheroes?
[1:18 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Sure! My first creation #UrbanHeroes ( back in 2014!) was about a avery TheBoys like setting….so there are supes in this game too!
[1:19 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Awesome. Very impressive.
[1:20 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Talking about recent topics we also published our OGL version for this game….enjoy!
[1:21 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Heh.
[1:21 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Do you have a character sheet that you can share with us?
[1:21 PM]Dan the GMshoe: (brb)
[1:22 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Sure let me get the right file to upload it; the sheet and the whole game are illustrated by Roberto Toderico a master cover artist in the international heavy Metal scene
[1:24 PM]Dan the GMshoe: (back)
[1:28 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Here it is !
[1:28 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Okay! Give me a minute to have a look here…
[1:29 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Is Archetype the same as Class in this context?
[1:30 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Yeah sure, using the very BECMI wording Archetypes is Class and Species is Race
[1:31 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Is the attribute scale the same as BECMI (3-18)?
[1:33 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: nope it is way simpler; you only get modifiers here (+1, +0, -1 etc) associated to charcateristics and is d10 based (so you only need a d100 to play and roll tables). But as you can get it is really easy to adapt to old school rules
[1:33 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Can you describe the task resolution mechanic?
[1:36 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: It is quite easy: you roll a d10 and you get a success with a 6+. But the fun part is you can always try an HEROIC CHECK or ATTACK which means you are going to roll on a specific d100 table where the success is set on the 50+ (so your +1 bonus now is less powerful than when rolling a d10). The fun part is each result is different and adds secondary effects (you fail so miserably everyone watching you must lose 1 turn laughing their asses out, you trip on your armour and fall on you face, etc)!
[1:38 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: You can check it in the free SICKstart version of the game which already features many of the tables the final game will have https://mailchi.mp/tinhatgames/osr-engOSR
[1:38 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Hmm… So on a HEROIC CHECK, you’re still adding the same bonus that you add on a normal check?
@Dan the GMshoeHmm… So on a HEROIC CHECK, you’re still adding the same bonus that you add on a normal check?[1:40 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Yeah it does not sound like much…but on a result of 1 you die (then proceed to roll on the DEATH table and check what happens! Maybe you respawn, maybe your spirt lingers in the place, etc) so your +1 bonus is not that bad after all!
[1:41 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Ah, I see.
[1:41 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Are there skills?
[1:44 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Nope no skills detected! It is Obsolete Shitty Rules after all right? But there is something more; the XP machanics: both players and DM have XPs that they can use during the game to activate abilities. Characters have their own level and archetype dependent abilities whil the DM may use them to issue casual encounters or use its DM powers /you can check em in the MASTER table…they inspired from the most common toxic master types! XD )
[1:45 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Irony is our goal; we think laughing about the most common sterotypes and toxic behaviours in our hobby is a good way to promote what’s really good!
[1:46 PM]Dan the GMshoe: What are the archetypes?
[1:49 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: The Archetypes are 100! Each one with unique abilities (you can get a preview on our SICKstart) and a specific pregen parody character: some examples are Astronaut/Warrior/Druid/Wizard/Survivor/Politician/Medic/Fanatic/Superhero/Zombi/Vampire/Cuborg/Cartoon/Guard/Spy/Possesed/Bard/Lycanthrope/Policeman/Fireman/Duelist/Sorcerer/ and many more!
[1:51 PM]Dan the GMshoe: I take it that they’re all playable regardless of the (possibly randomly-determined) setting?
[1:53 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Oh yeah most of the time happens different characters form different settings get along in random world to go on a Quest (guess what? There’s gonna be a QUEST tabel with 50+ quest archetypes and as many pregen quests! ); but you can also play it using characters from the same setting (different modes of play are featured in the book)
[1:55 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Can you give us an example of unique Archetype abilities? Like, the Astronaut, for example?
[1:57 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Mmmh k gonna fast translate and example in order to let you know (forgive Google trnalsate; if you want proper one the SICKstart have decent translated ones!)
[1:59 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: CARTOON: Frankie the Rat: People think that being an animated movie star is fun; Frankie was a children’s idol in the 30s of the last century but with the arrival of modernity, anime and video games he lost his job and fell into an abyss of alcoholism and begging. Low Lv: by spending 1 XP as an Action you can extract a random object from nothing by rolling on a table of your choice among COMMON OBJECTS, WEAPONS, ARMOR, CLOTHING, FOOD/DRINK, CONSTRUCTION/ receives +1d10 A against Falling Damage Medium-Lv: spending 1 XP as an Action or Reaction for the rest of the current Round becomes immune to the effects of a single physical law (weight, acceleration, pressure, heat, etc.) / +1 Interaction Lv.High: spending 1 XP as a Reaction when you would end up at 0HP you cancel the Damages taken but remain Stunned for 1d10 Rounds/ when you suffer an effect from the Psyche table you can choose to replace it with a roll on CHARACTER Epic level**: by spending 1 XP you can act for 1d10+2 Rounds as if time stood still for all the other NPCs and PCs present (but not for the DM)/ +1 Interaction
[2:00 PM]Dan the GMshoe: So “Cartoon” is an Archetype?
[2:00 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: gave you the cartoon one since its more unique! At each level you get an ability you can activate by spending XPs and one permanent ability. Activated abilities may interact with the narration
[2:00 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Yup! The Species in this case is Sentient Animal (Rat)
[2:01 PM]Dan the GMshoe: What is the permanent ability of the Cartoon?
[2:02 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: The one you read after / at each level (+1d10 against falling damage at low level, +1 Interaction at medium level, etc)
[2:02 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Ah, gotcha.
[2:03 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: As you can see by spending XPs you can defiy phisycs by using the Cartoon charatcer…and you can play as different kind of cartoons depening on your species!
[2:03 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Nice! How many species are there?
[2:05 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: 50+ species featured from Human to classic fantasy ones (elves, trolls, halfmen, ogres, etc) to sentient items, vegatables and animals (and there are according tables to get which kind of you are!) to demons, angels, aliens and cosimc spawns!
[2:06 PM]Dan the GMshoe: What game effects does species have?
[2:08 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: You can randomize you character but you can also customize it of course; during character creations you get to choose how to distribute your charcteristic bonuses while your species gives you special racial traits and HPs (dwarves can see in the dark and resist poison, sentient items are immune to poison and diseases, etc)
[2:09 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Does species choice affect Attributes?
[2:10 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Nope, but some may give you higher thershold when attributing your characteristics bonuses (Giant may increase their Strenght bonus up to +8 for example)
[2:12 PM]Dan the GMshoe: (Can you give me just a minute here? I need to let the dog out.)
[2:13 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Think about having all of these customizations options in one APP; other apps and games rarely randomize very accurate different encounters. In this game when rolling for an encounter for example you get: 1) number of creatures 2) age of creatures (young an elder have different stats from middle aged ones) 3) equpments (if you roll for a goblin it may have different clothes, weapons, etc). All in just ONE click!
@Dan the GMshoe(Can you give me just a minute here? I need to let the dog out.)[2:13 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: np
[2:13 PM]Dan the GMshoe: (Great, thanks! brb…)
[2:14 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Meanwhile imma post some pics form the actual game:
[2:16 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: And if you check on our group/page right now we just posted a video about how our APP works !
[2:16 PM]CoalCrystal: WHat # does the bird represent?
@CoalCrystalWHat # does the bird represent?[2:17 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Hi there! I think I see no birds mmmmh….(yet I agree that “the bird is the word” XD)
[2:17 PM]CoalCrystal: Flipping a bird is with the middle finger of either hand.
[2:19 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Ahahahah sorry for being such italian and not getting this! XD That in place of 1 on the die…it’s the die way to tell you you just got a fumble!
[2:19 PM]CoalCrystal: ahah, thanks for clarification(:
[2:20 PM]CoalCrystal: You said APP as in a computer program on google play or the apple store?
[2:21 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Apple store! It’s gonna be free for all KS backers!
[2:22 PM]CoalCrystal: What is the name of the APP that is going to be on the apple store?
[2:22 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Linux too I think but I’m no programmer and the guys told me something bout other platforms but it was in thier tech language…I didn’t really got it lol
[2:22 PM]Dan the GMshoe: (back, sorry!)
@CoalCrystalWhat is the name of the APP that is going to be on the apple store?[2:25 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Yet to be chosen! Probably we are going with OSR Beyonder (making fun of our big double D brother XD) or somthing similar, but the whole functions for the app depend on the KS campaign: we may add the possibility to host a game so that the DM may modify players sheet from her mobile, save games and much more
[2:26 PM]CoalCrystal: That sounds like you have a nicely sized team of developers working to proliferate your creation.
@CoalCrystalThat sounds like you have a nicely sized team of developers working to proliferate your creation.[2:27 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Sure! We are a well known company in Italy and at the moment we got a 15+ members working on this project1
[2:28 PM]Dan the GMshoe: What sort of system do you have for magic, psionics, superpowers, and other such abilities?
@Dan the GMshoeWhat sort of system do you have for magic, psionics, superpowers, and other such abilities?[2:32 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Very easy one; you get Mana points if you can cast Spells or Invocations (arcane and divine; there’s a 100 of both available). Number of Mana depends on the spells you know (if you know a 1st level spell and a 2nd level one you have 3 Mana; if you know a 1st level and a 3rd level you have 4 Mana) while the Mana cost for casting equals the spell level (1 for a 1st level, 2 for a 2nd level, etc)
[2:33 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Psionics and superpowers mimcs spells or Enchantments (100 enchantments on the omonymous table that can relate to items or to creatures)
[2:34 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Does the game include a bestiary?
[2:35 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Sure! You can check the bestiary on the SICKstart already! There is a MONSTER tabel and an ANIMAL table, but you can also get random NPCs by usiing the Archetype table
[2:36 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Do you know offhand about how large the bestiary is?
[2:37 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: more than 100 monsters and more than 100 animals (counting up all the dragons, elemental and golem variants you get up to 130 I would say); if you add the equipments variables and the age variables there’s endless possibilities!
[2:40 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Pretty impressive for a parody game!
[2:41 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: That is part of the parody! Old games used to randomize everything to the absurd sometimes; on of our golden rule is THE MORE THE PLAYERS ASK THE MORE YOU GET RANDOMIZED RESULTS!
[2:42 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: “Hey DM what’s behinf the wall?” dice rolling ” One million flying colossal stingrays. Get over it” 1
[2:43 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Nice.
[2:43 PM]Dan the GMshoe: You mentioned the players challenging the GM directly. How does that work?
@Dan the GMshoeYou mentioned the players challenging the GM directly. How does that work?[2:47 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Back to the XP mechanics: whenever a player spends an XP it must be given to the DM and vice versa; whenever the Quest ends (successfully or not) the DM will materialize to face off the characters in his own story and it will be more powerful the more XP he owns at that point. The DM will have very fun powers from the Maste table (some names include the Homebrewer, the Railroader, The Edgelord, the Power Master, the Narrative Hypotaxis Epistemologist, and more!)
[2:48 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: For example the least one I listed lets the DM change a single word in what a player just siad by spending an XP: so “I charge the troll” may turn into “I charge the clerci” Whooopsie! XD
[2:50 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Heh. That’s awesome.
[2:50 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Is the game mostly intended for one-shots?
[2:52 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: Sure! You don’t feeel like prepping ? Here it is to save your gaming night! It will also feature a campaign mode and one campaign module could be unlocked via stretch goal…the MEGA MASTER MINDGEON!
[2:54 PM]Dan the GMshoe: I love that illustration.
[2:54 PM]Dan the GMshoe: In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[2:57 PM]AlessandroRivaroli: I can only suggest y’all to be there on the 31st (tuesday!) for the early bird exclusive contents and to get a gme that is also an instrument you are going to use in each of your ttrpg game from now on!
[2:58 PM]Dan the GMshoe: Awesome.
