[7:34 PM] kroh01: Hey guys… My name is Walt and i run Hazard Studios, small game company where we specialize in helping folks do their jam in getting published for the first time. I am also the editor for Wargate books, a division of Galaxy’s Edge Books. We’re currently running a kickstarter for our flagship title to be made into a game http://.shorturl.at/guyGM(edited)
[7:34 PM] kroh01: Bah duh dah! Done
[7:35 PM] Dan Davenport: Thanks, @kroh01! The floor is open to questions!
[7:35 PM] Dan Davenport: Is that you?
[7:35 PM] kroh01: That’s a fifty caliber machine gun… I’m the less beautiful bastard next to it…
[7:36 PM] Dan Davenport: Ha! Awesome. Thanks again for your service.
[7:36 PM] kroh01: Of course I also am showing off that even in the middle of a god forsaken desert, a good NCO can always find coffee
[7:36 PM] kroh01: Thank you for your support!1
[7:36 PM] Dan Davenport: So! What can you tell us about the premise of the game?
[7:37 PM] kroh01: in the novels the game is based on, a group of United States Army Rangers are sent on a mission as part of a force to save the planet from plague.
[7:38 PM] kroh01: They find themselves alone when they land
[7:38 PM] kroh01: surrounded by an orc horde that wants them dead because, reasons, and they have to show the horde that you don’t mess with folks who have access to high explosives
[7:39 PM] kroh01: The game took Operation White Box by Pete Spahn, married it to Black Ops by Fainting goat games, and then mushed it into S&W white box.
[7:39 PM] kroh01: very simple system
[7:39 PM] kroh01: easy to learn, use, and carry
[7:39 PM] kroh01: so we went with it (and one of the main characters constant quotes from DND)
[7:39 PM] Dan Davenport: How do the soldiers end up in a fantasy world?
[7:40 PM] kroh01: Forgotten Ruin is part of wargate books, where each story has to have the following – Modern Military, Fantasy element, and a perpetual taco machine.
[7:41 PM] kroh01: The soliders were part of a task force looking to shoot a couple of years through time to rebuild society after a plague ravages the planet.
[7:41 PM] kroh01: Through what the science guys in the story call a QST
[7:41 PM] kroh01: Quantum Singularity Tunnel
[7:42 PM] kroh01: unfortunately… the over shot the landing
[7:42 PM] LibrariaNPC: So what inspired the system choice? Was it because it was most familiar, or was there something specific it does for this story? As a follow-up, are there any mechanical changes from the system source, or anything uniquely added for this?
[7:44 PM] kroh01: Hey @LibrariaNPC – we sat down with the authors and agreed that we wanted something simple, that people wouldn’t have to get a degree in to play so that everyone could enjoy it. But there is a character in teh story that CONSTANTLY references DnD so we wanted that connection as well. After that it was an easy choice
[7:44 PM] kroh01: As for what we changed, we really didn’t change that much other than adding some things to reflect the flavor of the game.
[7:45 PM] kroh01: For example, you can gain specialized training as you rise in level because a miltiary guy constantly trains in new skills as they advance in the real world, we wanted a mechanic to reflect that
[7:46 PM] kroh01: There is also the principle of the Ruin Reveals
[7:47 PM] kroh01: So you could start the game off as a team leader running a crew of three guys with you, and end up a Minotaur rocking an M-60 E-3 because the new boom just isn’t big enough for you ….
[7:47 PM] kroh01: This happened in the novel constantly so we included it in the game
[7:47 PM] kroh01: with several different ways to play it out
[7:48 PM] kroh01: Bah duh dah! Done
[7:48 PM] Dan Davenport: So the PCs don’t all have to be human soldiers?
[7:49 PM] kroh01: There’s several ways to play that
[7:49 PM] kroh01: The majority of games will START with human soldiers
[7:49 PM] LibrariaNPC: So with the setting, how do you handle character loss? Is there always assumed to be a new soldier in the squad, or is it someone recruited from this future world?
[7:49 PM] kroh01: but they could change as the Ruin (the setting ) changes and reveals what is underneath
@LibrariaNPCSo with the setting, how do you handle character loss? Is there always assumed to be a new soldier in the squad, or is it someone recruited from this future world?[7:49 PM] kroh01: A bit of both
[7:50 PM] kroh01: In the books… the rangers start recruiting elves as spies and dwarves as combat engineers they run through a new ranger school
[7:50 PM] kroh01: pretty dope
[7:50 PM] Dan Davenport: Does the setting explain where the fantasy elements came from in this future Earth?
@Dan DavenportDoes the setting explain where the fantasy elements came from in this future Earth?[7:51 PM] kroh01: It’s in the GM’s section so as not to spoil it for people who haven’t read the book series
[7:51 PM] kroh01: kind of like the guy in that other series in the dark helmet who was that young jedi’s father… that was always in teh GM section
[7:52 PM] kroh01: S P O I L E R S: The plague that drove them to hop through time is the very thing that changed the world into a realm of Lizard Pharoh kings, wizards, and monsters
[7:53 PM] Dan Davenport: How common is magic, and how powerful?
[7:54 PM] kroh01: it’s like in the conan novels… when you do see it, it is usually really nasty and comes at a high cost to someone
[7:55 PM] kroh01: but then again it depends on who uses it. The elves use it a lot more because they are intricately joined to the ruin
[7:55 PM] kroh01: but they use it to heal and connect
[7:55 PM] kroh01: where as the Saur (one of the main bad guys) use it to corrupt and kill
[7:56 PM] Dan Davenport: Saur = lizard people?
[7:56 PM] kroh01: Yerssir
[7:57 PM] Dan Davenport: I figured that out all by myself.
[7:57 PM] kroh01: They are pretty nasty
[7:58 PM] kroh01: and here is a bad guy we released to folks today
[7:58 PM] Dan Davenport: Cool!
[7:58 PM] LibrariaNPC: Brutal
[7:59 PM] Dan Davenport: Is any tech left in this future fantasy world, or do the soldiers have a monopoly on tech?
[7:59 PM] kroh01: They will because without their forge, the technology breaks down after a matter of weeks
[8:00 PM] kroh01: it’s all well and good if you don’t have the perpetual taco machine
[8:00 PM] LibrariaNPC: I assume this “Forge” is something they brought with them that allows them to craft replacement gear/ammos/etc?
[8:00 PM] kroh01: YES!!!
[8:00 PM] kroh01: think of it like a molecular 3d printer
[8:00 PM] kroh01: but it can only build things up to a certain size
[8:01 PM] kroh01: so if you want a helicopter… you have to print the parts and put it together
[8:01 PM] LibrariaNPC: So it can produce the gear they need, as well as food, but I assume it has limited mobility?
[8:01 PM] kroh01: it’s huge… so if they want to move it, it takes a bit
[8:01 PM] Dan Davenport: I take it that based on the forge, the soldiers are from our future?
[8:02 PM] kroh01: Yes… they left yesterday
[8:02 PM] kroh01: from area 51
[8:02 PM] kroh01: lol
[8:02 PM] LibrariaNPC: Sorry, I don’t really know the setting as I haven’t read the books (curse of a librarian; backlog bigger than most oversized egos), thus the questions
[8:02 PM] kroh01: That is the best curse ever!!!!
[8:02 PM] Dan Davenport: How many rangers are there?
[8:03 PM] kroh01: a company (120 rangers, one green beret supervisor, a couple of pilots, a drone jocky, and few medics)
[8:04 PM] Dan Davenport: How many helicopters do they have?
[8:05 PM] kroh01: in the beginning none
[8:05 PM] kroh01: and the plane broke
[8:06 PM] LibrariaNPC: So would a campaign function as a coherent story of a squad taking on challenges and Doing The Thing, with replacements being pulled from the company/Ranger School, or would it be a better fit for a Western Marches style of game? Or are both valid depending on group/play style?
[8:06 PM] kroh01: That is going to depend on the gruop
[8:07 PM] LibrariaNPC: Had a feeling, but I can see both working out from what you’re telling me (more Western Marches imho, but again, don’t know the source material)
[8:07 PM] Dan Davenport: What is Western Marches style?
[8:07 PM] kroh01: My last group worked witha group of dwarves to oust som dueger and build back their stronghold
[8:07 PM] Dan Davenport: (Please forgive my ignorance.)
[8:08 PM] kroh01: A groupm of combat engineers with dwarves… it was dope
@LibrariaNPCHad a feeling, but I can see both working out from what you’re telling me (more Western Marches imho, but again, don’t know the source material)[8:09 PM] kroh01: you can go that way… but a great part of the game is getting to experience the wonder of dnd for the first time because NO ONE knows what their up agaisnt and you can twist the expectation
[8:10 PM] Dan Davenport: By default, what do the PCs do? Do they explore? Are they mercenaries?
[8:12 PM] kroh01: based on the GM hopes for the campaign –
[8:12 PM] kroh01: I’ve seen the troopers get there and just look to take over
@Dan DavenportWhat is Western Marches style?[8:12 PM] LibrariaNPC: Game group of rotating players and PCs, all revolving around a specific home. Think Star Trek or BAttlestar Galactica but with more revolving characters.1
[8:12 PM] kroh01: I’ve seen them get here and get imprsioned by a horde
@LibrariaNPCGame group of rotating players and PCs, all revolving around a specific home. Think Star Trek or BAttlestar Galactica but with more revolving characters.[8:12 PM] kroh01: HELL YES!!!
[8:14 PM] LibrariaNPC: So in this case, imagine having 8 players, but you can only reliably get 4 at a time. They all have one or more characters they rotate, build a party comp, and do a self-contained adventure. Lets people try different roles in a squad or different character (arche)types, and still have a fun game time.
[8:14 PM] kroh01: @LibrariaNPC SO when are we playing this?
[8:14 PM] LibrariaNPC: Not sure lol
[8:15 PM] LibrariaNPC: I kind of bowed out of a lot of OSR/D&D flavored things, but I like seeing the settings, gameplay styles, and other shenanigans people bring to the table
[8:15 PM] kroh01: if we can crack 30K we have a 5e conversion
[8:15 PM] kroh01: and we already got a Super6 conversion
[8:16 PM] Dan Davenport: About how many “primitive screwheads” does it take to make trouble for the well-armed rangers?
[8:16 PM] LibrariaNPC: But that’s a conversation not for the Q&A lol. This is all about you bragging about the awesome stuff coming out.
@Dan DavenportAbout how many “primitive screwheads” does it take to make trouble for the well-armed rangers?[8:16 PM] kroh01: THIS IS MY BOOMSTICK!!!1
[8:16 PM] Dan Davenport: What is Super6?
[8:17 PM] kroh01: our priority system – Supers Revised Edition with our Search and Destroy rules overlaid
[8:18 PM] Dan Davenport: What sort of system is Supers? D6 pools?
[8:19 PM] kroh01: yessir
[8:19 PM] LibrariaNPC: So this one? https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/130108/SUPERS-Revised-EditionSUPERS Revised Edition – HAZARD Studio | SUPERS! Revised Edition | …In the panels and pages of comics, it is often the hero’s origin that molds them into someone that defies the odds and s
[8:20 PM] kroh01: kind of like champions mixed with WEG star wars
[8:20 PM] Dan Davenport: And what is Search and Destroy?
[8:20 PM] kroh01: Hey!@ that’s my game
[8:20 PM] kroh01: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/169900/Search–Destroy?term=search+and+destroySearch & Destroy – Stone Mountain Press | DriveThruRPG.com“Redhawk to Citadel. Come in Citadel. The situation is worse than we imagined…” The world of action heroes is full of
[8:22 PM] kroh01: so much fun
[8:22 PM] Dan Davenport: Very cool.
[8:23 PM] Dan Davenport: But seriously, though: How many fantasy characters does it take to seriously threaten the rangers?
[8:23 PM] kroh01: In th ebooks, they were almost overrun… but hard to mess with them when they had Carl G’s and mortars
[8:24 PM] kroh01: But black magic is a great countermeasure
[8:24 PM] Dan Davenport: Carl G’s?
[8:25 PM] kroh01: That is an actual 84 milimeter recoilless rifle
[8:26 PM] Dan Davenport: So sort of a mini-bazooka?
[8:26 PM] kroh01: recoilless rifle…. shells mostly used for anti-tank
[8:27 PM] Dan Davenport: Do the rangers have access to magic?
[8:27 PM] kroh01: One of em does… but in the game it is possible for the soldiers to learn magic
[8:27 PM] kroh01: divine and spell
[8:30 PM] Dan Davenport: Does this stick with a class-based system, and if so, what classes are the rangers?
[8:30 PM] kroh01: This is a class based… the rangers are the Operator Class
[8:31 PM] kroh01: Which anyone can transition to if they have the stats at level 3
[8:31 PM] Dan Davenport: What distinguishes an Operator from a Fighter?
[8:34 PM] kroh01: So a Trooper is the base fighter for the settting
[8:34 PM] kroh01: that most closely resembles the fighter
[8:34 PM] kroh01: The operator starts with a higher training package
[8:35 PM] kroh01: Airborne, tough as nails (extra hit points), 1/2 move penalty from wearing armor, and once a day they can re-roll a saving throw
[8:36 PM] Dan Davenport: Nice.
[8:36 PM] Dan Davenport: What other classes are available?
[8:37 PM] kroh01: Combat Engineer, Sniper, combat medic, Deep State Liaison, Specialist…
[8:37 PM] kroh01: but we are intentionally leaving out some of the classes until the campaign is complete
[8:38 PM] kroh01: give people something to look forward to in the finished product, the same for monsters, spells, and gear1
[8:39 PM] Dan Davenport: How large of a bestiary does the game feature?
[8:41 PM] kroh01: All the regular offenders plus some new ones that don’t exist in standard fantasy games
[8:42 PM] Dan Davenport: About how many entries?
[8:43 PM] kroh01: over 2001
[8:43 PM] LibrariaNPC: I need to crash shortly, but I did want to ask: if you were trying to close a sale with a non-OSR fan, what would you say?
@kroh01over 200[8:43 PM] Dan Davenport: Very impressive!
@LibrariaNPCI need to crash shortly, but I did want to ask: if you were trying to close a sale with a non-OSR fan, what would you say?[8:45 PM] kroh01: Give the game a try in all your favorite flavors once we release them or just play the white box version and see if you like it. The book is littered with new content to bring the OSR into OH MY LAWD, and the game is tailored to give you the experience from the books
[8:46 PM] kroh01: and if you have any questions – hit me up
[8:47 PM] kroh01: I’m always up for questions
[8:47 PM] LibrariaNPC: On that note: any suggestion where to start reading to see if the flavor is right?
[8:48 PM] kroh01: front book is available through the campaign or find it on amazon
[8:48 PM] kroh01: www.forgottenruin.com
[8:48 PM] kroh01: or from us
[8:48 PM] LibrariaNPC: Gotcha, thanks! Always curious if this sort of thing is a series to be read in publication order, “Discworld Order,” or just a slew of short stories
[8:49 PM] LibrariaNPC: Anyway, I hope the KS soars and exceeds what you expect! Take care and hopefully chat with you again soon!
[8:49 PM] Dan Davenport: Take care, @LibrariaNPC!
[8:49 PM] kroh01: Thanks for coming out and thank you for the questions!
[8:50 PM] Dan Davenport: Do you have a character sheet that we can see, @kroh01?
[8:50 PM] LibrariaNPC: Anytime, just happy I could make one of these! Been a hot minute lol1
[8:50 PM] kroh01: the bottom one has the coffee stains
[8:51 PM] kroh01: like a good NCO
[8:51 PM] Dan Davenport: Heh.
[8:51 PM] Dan Davenport: What is BHB?
[8:51 PM] kroh01: Base Hit Bonus
[8:53 PM] Dan Davenport: I see… And what are the attack rolls? I see AC, AAC, and Attack.
[8:54 PM] kroh01: AC is armor class
[8:54 PM] kroh01: AAC is ascending Armor Class
[8:54 PM] kroh01: and the attack is the roll needed
[8:54 PM] kroh01: this is classic DND and NEw DnD for those that are used to such things
[8:54 PM] kroh01: that have been encorporated into White Box
[8:54 PM] kroh01: and Swords and Wizardry in general
[8:55 PM] Dan Davenport: Ah, so you can use either type of armor system?
[8:55 PM] kroh01: yessir
[8:55 PM] Dan Davenport: Cool.
[8:55 PM] kroh01: whatever is easier to the table
[8:55 PM] Dan Davenport: I notice that there’s no slot for alignment.
[8:56 PM] kroh01: You can use it if you like but most soldiers who would be evil wou;dnt pass the psyche eval
[8:56 PM] Dan Davenport: Makes sense.
[8:57 PM] Dan Davenport: I also don’t see skills. Are those covered by class abilities?
[8:58 PM] kroh01: They are in teh beginning of the book and can be covered a couple of different ways
[8:58 PM] kroh01: You can put that under training and abiliteis
[8:59 PM] Dan Davenport: How specific are these abilities?
[8:59 PM] kroh01: the skills?
[9:00 PM] Dan Davenport: Yes.
[9:00 PM] kroh01: In one version you can have academics while in another you can have navigation, ancient laguages, mathmatics, etc
[9:00 PM] kroh01: depends on which version you want to use and how crunchy you want the game
[9:01 PM] Dan Davenport: How are skills used?
[9:01 PM] Dan Davenport: In game mechanics terms.
[9:01 PM] kroh01: One version is used by adding a modifier to the associated ability and you roll under the number on a d20
[9:02 PM] kroh01: one version is a d6. Most people start with a 2 or less for success and you gain a higher skill (3 or less, 4 or less,,etc)
[9:03 PM] Dan Davenport: Do you stick with the usual Vancian magic?
[9:05 PM] kroh01: Yes and no…. the way the magic works in thebeginning is mostly discovery of someone who hasn’t used it before so it is clumsy
[9:06 PM] kroh01: as you go on you get more proficient, it is like vancian magic with some twists to make things interesting
[9:07 PM] Dan Davenport: How do you simulate the clumsy bit mechanically?
[9:08 PM] kroh01: the first bits of ruined training to become a mage accounts for the possibility that you’re not quite Ruined yet, so there’s a chance your magic can fail.
[9:08 PM] kroh01: or worse… go haywire
[9:09 PM] kroh01: and having that much power going through you, there’s a chance it can mess you up.
[9:09 PM] kroh01: pass out, throw up, etc.
[9:10 PM] kroh01: but as you get the next Ruined Advance, you become more cozy with it and more powerful
[9:11 PM] Dan Davenport: What does it mean to be Ruined?
[9:12 PM] kroh01: The longer the rangers are in the Ruin, there is a chance that the charatcers can change
[9:12 PM] kroh01: there are mechanics for it in the game
[9:12 PM] kroh01: You could possibly become an orc, elf, minotaur, centaur, dwarf… etfc
[9:13 PM] kroh01: JASON!!!
[9:13 PM] Jason_Sunday: I’m looking for to our game next Monday on BAMF!
[9:13 PM] kroh01: Going to be lit!
[9:14 PM] Dan Davenport: Is this a one-off or the start of a game line?
[9:14 PM] kroh01: A LINE OF COURSE!!!
[9:15 PM] Dan Davenport: Excellent. What’s up next, then?
[9:16 PM] kroh01: Thor’s GEAR LOCKER!!!
[9:16 PM] kroh01: gear book
[9:19 PM] Jason_Sunday: Can normal S&W characters play along side FR characters?
[9:19 PM] kroh01: YES!!!
[9:19 PM] kroh01: We had a fighter in teh game along with his wizard bbuddy… fun as hell
[9:20 PM] kroh01: the soldier players constantly bugging the wizard to abra kadabra some popcorn
[9:20 PM] kroh01: was hysterical
[9:20 PM] Jason_Sunday: Haha. That’s great!
[9:21 PM] Dan Davenport: Awesome.
[9:21 PM] Dan Davenport: No game is perfect. What is your least favorite aspect of this game, @kroh01?
[9:21 PM] kroh01: That I don’t have more time to play!
[9:22 PM] Dan Davenport: Heh.
[9:23 PM] kroh01: mechanics wise? the game’s greatest strength (its adaptability) also means that it puts more work on the GM
[9:23 PM] Jason_Sunday: It’s a solid base for the game.
[9:23 PM] kroh01: if there’s a special circumstance
[9:23 PM] kroh01: yeah it is a HELLUVA lot of fun, @Jason_Sunday
[9:26 PM] Jason_Sunday: Who is the cartographer?
[9:27 PM] Jason_Sunday: That’s an awesome map
[9:27 PM] kroh01: John Stevenson
[9:27 PM] kroh01: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/8l5WGEArtStationForgotten Ruin map, John StevensonToward the end of last year/beginning of this year I had the pleasure of working with Nick Cole and Jason Anspach, of the Galaxy’s Edge series of books. https://www.galacticoutlaws.com/ Here they head into another direction with an old school style rpg, enlisting some old school names. They worked with Jim Ward and Erol Otis, among others. The …1
[9:28 PM] Dan Davenport: In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[9:28 PM] kroh01: Just that we have a lot of amazing people that came out to support us early and we owe the success of the campaign to the very motivated fans of the books who want to play this at the table
[9:29 PM] kroh01: Huge thanks to the community that is so invested2
[9:30 PM] Dan Davenport: Thanks very much for joining us, @kroh01!
