Hey everybody, my name is Bill Bodden. I’ve written for the Tabletop Gaming biz for almost 20 years. Stuff I’ve contributed to: World of Darkness, Achtung! Cthulhu, Amp: Year One, H.P. Lovecraft Preparatory Academy, Leverage RPG, Warhammer Fantasy Role Play, and Pugmire, to name most. I live in the upper Midwest of the US. (done)

Thanks, @Bill_Bodden! The floor is open to questions!

[21-Apr-21 08:36 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
When did you first get into RPGs?
[21-Apr-21 08:36 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Jimmy Carter was President!
[21-Apr-21 08:36 PM] Henry#3418
@Bill_Bodden Why are you joining us today is there a project your promoting? If so, can you link it and give us some context?
[21-Apr-21 08:37 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Sure thing Henry. I bumped into Dan on Facebook (IIRC) and we talked a bit about gaming. He invited me to be here to talk about what I’ve done and what’s coming up.
[21-Apr-21 08:38 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Here’s my latest project – hitting Kickstarter next week: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ghostshowpress/transgressive-horror?fbclid=IwAR345KnhvqLx586aVpyd0_BrzZniH3_eGf3qWS4Eb3UxQVod3b06xHfAwTg

I should clarify that I’m one of the contributors – it isn’t my project alone. It’s easy to become possessive about projects one has worked on and takes great pride in.
[21-Apr-21 08:39 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
Certainly.
[21-Apr-21 08:39 PM] Henry#3418
Can you give us more information the page is sparse on it?
[21-Apr-21 08:41 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
The context of this book is essays on horror films that broke the mold in some way. If you’re fans of Mutants and Masterminds you might recall the name of the main dude: Christopher McGLothlin. He invited me to contribe and essay, so I wrote about the film Congo.
[21-Apr-21 08:42 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
Looks like Christopher is a past guest here himself. 🙂

To expand on Dan’s previous question, my first RPG was the D&D Basic set, ca 1977. Nobody knew how to run a good game back then, but I saw so much potential for fun, and I kept at it.
[21-Apr-21 08:44 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Back when I worked for Green Ronin, Chris and I would hang out together at GenCon – it was just about the only time we saw each other in person.

That Kickstarter goes live next week Tuesday, BTW.

I’m familiar with most of the games you mentioned in the intro, but what is H.P. Lovecraft Preparatory Academy?
[21-Apr-21 08:47 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
It’s kind of what would happen if a famous wizarding school were geared towards characters from Lovecraftian stories. SO boarding school with Deep Ones.

Heh. Nice. What did you write for that?

Good question Henry. It depends on what you like. If you’re into D&D, my Scarred Lands adventures are (if I do say so myself) pretty fun. If you like Hellboy and Call of Cthulhu, Achtung! Chthulhu is a fun system.
[21-Apr-21 08:51 PM] Henry#3418
The one you believe in more than any other that people should spend their time on, and why?
[21-Apr-21 08:51 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
What sort of system does that game use?
[21-Apr-21 08:52 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
If you’re into Vampires, I worked on two crunch books and two fiction anthologies for the World of Darkness: ASnarchs UNbound, Ghouls and Reveanants (for VtM) and Darkened Streets and Changing Breeds: WIld West Tales for WtA
[21-Apr-21 08:53 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Henry, it’s more complicated than that. There are people who ONLY like D&D; recommending Achtung! Cthulhu to them, no matter how much I love the setting, is a waste of everyone’s time.
[21-Apr-21 08:53 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Dan, HPLPA has rule sets for Savage Worlds, the PIP system, and one or two others.
[21-Apr-21 08:55 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Dan, the original rules for HPLPA use a new system called the PDQ system.
[21-Apr-21 08:56 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
I’m familiar with PDQ. A nice little system.
[21-Apr-21 08:56 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002

[21-Apr-21 08:57 PM] Henry#3418
@Bill_Bodden I will rephrase. Which project did you put the most into, and why do you believe people should spend their time on that and what makes that project special to you?
[21-Apr-21 08:59 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Henry: Fair enough. I think I would recommend either my work on Scarred Lands material, or World of Darkness stuff. Their settings are so rich and complex that it gives me tremendous latitude in creating adventures and other material to supplement those games.

The thing that really makes my work special is when I get feedback from gamers who bought a copy. Positive reinforcement is inspiring!
[21-Apr-21 09:02 PM] Henry#3418
What review made most of an impact on you personally and why?
[21-Apr-21 09:05 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
This one, for Madison By Night: “A must have for fans of the Anarachs, politically volatile gameplay, or even just residents of Madtown. Some of the coolest vampire bios I’ve yet read and the subtle local references made me punch the air with joy!”
[21-Apr-21 09:05 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
It’s inspiring when someone gets what you were trying to do with a book.
[21-Apr-21 09:13 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Okay, let me ask a question: DO you all play a wide variety of RPGs, or just one or two? Is that because of the group you’re involved with, or personal taste?
[21-Apr-21 09:14 PM] Henry#3418
For me I play one game consistently and others when I get the opportunity with other people. Friends are all starting families makes organizing hard. But I do like a wide variety of games.
[21-Apr-21 09:15 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Agreed. It gets tough to get people together on a regular basis as you age.
[21-Apr-21 09:16 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
You mentioned your love of horror RPGs during our prior discussions. What is your favorite horror RPG?
[21-Apr-21 09:17 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
I also like a wide variety of game settings. Having a tough time finding friends who want to play a superhero RPG, which i find a little discouraging. Right now everyone I know seems to want to play D&D, which is great, but I’m finding myself getting bored with the game a little.
[21-Apr-21 09:17 PM] Henry#3418
I am currently play our own variant of masks, very high teen drama.
[21-Apr-21 09:18 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Dan: Call of Cthulhu has to be my favorite horror RPG. I remember we had a big group to play Masks of Nyarlathotep when it came out (the first time). We played through that adventure for more than a year!
[21-Apr-21 09:25 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Another thing that’s tough for game designers: SO much of our work goes out of print and never comes back. That’s mitigated somewhat with DriveThru being able to sell digital copies for half of forever, but so much of what we do is ephemeral; it’s frequently gone before most people even discover it.
[21-Apr-21 09:26 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
That’s particularly true with licenses. Firefly and Leverage (both from Margaret Weis Productions) are totally gone, but I was really happy with the work I did for both of those.
[21-Apr-21 09:29 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Anyone out there familiar with Pugmire?
[21-Apr-21 09:29 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
I am! We’ve had the author here for a Q&A, in fact.
[21-Apr-21 09:30 PM] YeOldeRaven#3981
What sort of dice would you like to be rolling? The classics or would you like to see more custom/unique dice for games?
[21-Apr-21 09:30 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
It’s a fun game and a very clever setting. I have to give Eddy Webb a huge amount of credit for coming up with it; pretty original and VERY family-friendly without being too saccharine.
[21-Apr-21 09:31 PM] Dan Davenport#6715
Eddy’s a pretty cool dude.
[21-Apr-21 09:32 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Hey YeOldRaven – welcome! I love rolling dice. Lately I’ve been using the auto dice rolling function on D&D Beyond. Have to say it’s a decent set-up, but I pine for breaking out a few of my polyhedral sets and giving them a toss!

[21-Apr-21 09:39 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
FUn story: In Masks of Nyarlathotep, the cultists are trying to resurrect Egyptian Queen Nitocris to help them cast a globe-spanning spell. I was at an Egyptian exhibit in CHicago with my wife, and lo and behold, there was the sarcophagus of none other than Queen Nitocris! I stammered for a while on seeing it like a Scooby-Doo character! My wife (who is not an RPG gamer) was unimpressed when I told her what had me so shaken up.

Henry: Least favorite part of game design…
[21-Apr-21 09:42 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Gotta be the money. RPG writers get paid really poorly. Yeah, it’s fun work, but you also have to earn enough to put food on the table. Also, most RPG writing is work-for-hire, which means once you get paid, the work is no longer yours in any way.
[21-Apr-21 09:43 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
It’s one of the things that’s driving so many talented writers away from RPGs – they just can’t earn a living doing it.
[21-Apr-21 09:43 PM] Henry#3418
Has that made you consider writing any RPGs yourself? How does that change the way you work?
[21-Apr-21 09:45 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Seeing the sales return on RPGs has convinced me that I don’t want to come up with my own game. It can vbe soul-crushing to labor over something for months – maybe years, even – only to have it fall flat and not sell enough to break even.
[21-Apr-21 09:46 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
I worked in retail and wholesales for years in the game industry; there’s countless REALLYT GOOD games that this happened to, through no fault of their own. You need a good product, smart marketing, but you also need a TON of luck.

[21-Apr-21 09:47 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
If you haven’t already, I would strongly consider having a digital product with print-on-demand capability. DriveThru can help with that…
[21-Apr-21 09:48 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
That way you aren’t sitting on a garage full of unsold books for years.
[21-Apr-21 09:48 PM] YeOldeRaven#3981
It seems like it’s all of the other stuff that would generate your good sales until you’re in the big leagues.
On the flip side, I see some patreon accounts that are collecting 8-10k per month. They aren’t generating new RPGs every month but, instead, are generating supplementary stuff; perhaps for their own RPG but perhaps not.
[21-Apr-21 09:48 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
It’s more expensive per-copy, but much less risk.
[21-Apr-21 09:48 PM] Henry#3418
I have talked to some people who have made it so to speak in the current market but this is your interview not mine. So I will continue with questions 🙂
[21-Apr-21 09:49 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Like I said, you also need luck, and some designers attract buyers on their name recognition too. I’m not saying it can’t be done – only that it’s tough.
[21-Apr-21 09:50 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
YeOldeRaven: Yes, having a long tail can help sales overall, but what needs to sell is the core book. Adventures sell very poorly.
[21-Apr-21 09:51 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
YeOldeRaven: There’s also a fine line between having a complete RPG in the core book, and forcing customers to buy supplements to be able to play.
[21-Apr-21 09:51 PM] YeOldeRaven#3981
Interesting, I wouldn’t have expected that. But I’m in a place in life where I have 10-20 dollars to pick up something of interest where I wasn’t in that place five years ago.
[21-Apr-21 09:51 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
YeOldeRaven: Do you GM?
[21-Apr-21 09:52 PM] YeOldeRaven#3981
Agreed. Apple has shown us that a closed eco system can work but you have to have a slick product.
[21-Apr-21 09:52 PM] Henry#3418
@Bill_Bodden What is the one thing people wish people talked about with your games but they never do?
[21-Apr-21 09:52 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Adventures sell to GMs, which right off the bat cuts out 75% of the customer base.

Which can be hard
[21-Apr-21 09:56 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
YeOldeRaven: Mind you, that isn’t a BAD thing. It just means that adventures ARE NOT where the money is.
[21-Apr-21 09:57 PM] Bill_Bodden#2002
Henry: Yes. I’m the kind of person that thrives on positive reinforcement, so it can be highly discouraging.

If you won the lottery and didn’t have to earn money – what would you like to create?
[21-Apr-21 09:59 PM] Henry#3418
@Bill_Bodden You won the luck lotto, everything is fine, no everything. So now you can sit back relax and of course the only catch with this is you must design your dream game, money is no issue but you do have to get it out relatively soon (a year so). What are you designing and why?

In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
