[10-Dec-20 07:34 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Well, Dan, where do you want to start?
[10-Dec-20 07:34 PM] saintnexan#6715
Thanks, @T. Glenn Bane! The floor is open to questions!
[10-Dec-20 07:34 PM] saintnexan#6715
What can you tell us about the premise of the game?
[10-Dec-20 07:36 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
The game is set is the backdrop of Mythic Arizona. It utilizes archetypes from Western Media. There is also a variant game located in the pages that focuses on horror, called Saddles of Samhain.

👍
[10-Dec-20 07:36 PM] saintnexan#6715
Can you describe what “Mythic” means in this context?
[10-Dec-20 07:39 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Yes. It means the idea put fourth in moves and pulp books, which concentrates on adventure and individual danger, rather than historical record. Historical gaming is not the chief goal of the game, but rather backdrop to the adventure. The game also does not have to follow a historic timeline. Once the game is off and running, Arizona is yours.
[10-Dec-20 07:40 PM] saintnexan#6715
Speaking of timelines, does the game have a default starting year?
[10-Dec-20 07:40 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
1876.
[10-Dec-20 07:40 PM] Henry#3418
who do you think this game is for?
[10-Dec-20 07:41 PM] saintnexan#6715
Aside from Saddles of Samhain, are there any supernatural elements in the basic game?
[10-Dec-20 07:43 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
This game is for any player who ever enjoyed a western, and would like to take a stab at being one of the bigger than life heroes of the genre. I generally set my games with four to six players.
[10-Dec-20 07:44 PM] Henry#3418
how complex do you think your game is?
[10-Dec-20 07:45 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
The game is set up as a straight western. Otherwise that is entirely up to the GM. There is an extensive monster section, but that is primarily for Saddles of Samhain.
[10-Dec-20 07:45 PM] saintnexan#6715
(brb)
[10-Dec-20 07:45 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Worlds of Pulp products are all designed to be simple to learn and fast to play.
[10-Dec-20 07:46 PM] Henry#3418
So you would say no different to standard savage worlds? more a theme and setting than a change in rule set?
[10-Dec-20 07:48 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
There are new rules in this game, but otherwise is a compatible Worlds of Pulp product.
[10-Dec-20 07:48 PM] saintnexan#6715
(back)
[10-Dec-20 07:48 PM] Henry#3418
what would be the biggest new rule?
[10-Dec-20 07:49 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Some of the newer rules is the “Recall and Muscle Memory” rule, as well as the optional “Walk it Off” rule.
[10-Dec-20 07:49 PM] Henry#3418
could you explain each ?
[10-Dec-20 07:49 PM] saintnexan#6715
Does the game include stats for historical and/or fictional Western heroes and villains?
[10-Dec-20 07:51 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Sure can. “Recall and Muscle Memory” allows a character to spend accumulate Boxcar Points to commit skill uses to memory, allowing the character to recall previous rolls used for similar purposes and use it again. This means that a highly experienced character could become essentially diceless.
[10-Dec-20 07:52 PM] saintnexan#6715
Huh. That’s an interesting mechanic.
[10-Dec-20 07:52 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
“Walking it Off” allows a character to replenish most damage in the span between encounters.
[10-Dec-20 07:53 PM] Henry#3418
What is the thinking behind these mechanics
[10-Dec-20 07:55 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
There are tasks that we all did that were difficult once but are second nature now. “Recall and Muscle Memory” reflects this in game terms.
[10-Dec-20 07:56 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Walking it off allows the action to continue to mount throughout a game. I like to think of the movie “Die Hard” The hero accumulates an insane amount of damage over the course of the movie, but at the end, still has enough to keep fighting.
[10-Dec-20 07:58 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Dan, the game does not focus on historical characters, though it has a rogues gallery of fictional characters fir the towns of “Slow Funeral Ridge,” and Gunshot.
[10-Dec-20 07:58 PM] saintnexan#6715
Great town names. 🙂
[10-Dec-20 08:00 PM] Henry#3418
So these are more about flavour and trying to reflect that flavor in the game than some system you found necessary?
[10-Dec-20 08:00 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Thank you. Both towns are unique and full of flavor. SFR tends to be for straight Westerb, while GS tends to lend itself more to pulp stories.
[10-Dec-20 08:02 PM] saintnexan#6715
How does the “pulpiness” of Gunshot manifest?
[10-Dec-20 08:02 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
That is correct. Worlds of Pulp has always leaned towards.
[10-Dec-20 08:04 PM] Henry#3418
Is this why you chose this system? and did you consider any other systems or making your own.
[10-Dec-20 08:04 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
First of all, GS is a “Prop Town” which means that it resembles old western movie sets, than an actual town. Second, some of the characters that are connected to GS tend to be the Masked Vigilante type.
[10-Dec-20 08:05 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Well, this is my system.
[10-Dec-20 08:06 PM] saintnexan#6715
Heh. When you said “Prop Town,” the first thing that popped to mind was the fake Rock Ridge in Blazing Saddles. 😄
[10-Dec-20 08:07 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Yeah could be. I give directions in the game for designing Prop Towns. Its a fun way to make Mythic Arizona your own.
[10-Dec-20 08:08 PM] saintnexan#6715
I assume there’s a town drunk and a “soiled dove” with a heart o’ gold?
[10-Dec-20 08:09 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
As Archetypes, no. As characters in the gallery…yes.
[10-Dec-20 08:09 PM] saintnexan#6715
Sweet. 😄
[10-Dec-20 08:10 PM] saintnexan#6715
What can you tell us about Saddles of Samhain?
[10-Dec-20 08:13 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
The players play Ghost Riders, which are individuals who are aware of the supernatural threats from the Uncanny Night Wind. These characters seek out and face down supernatural threats. Regular society has no idea that these things exist,
[10-Dec-20 08:13 PM] saintnexan#6715
Do the Ghost Riders have any supernatural resources of their own?
[10-Dec-20 08:17 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Yes. They have unique knowledge. They are prepared intellectually to face these dangers. They also have Haint Stones. When a supernatural creature is destroyed, somewhere nearby will be a Haint Stone (pretty blue stone) which they can mount into their weapons to give the added effect against other supernatural creatures
I am going to be doing a livestream of Streets of Samhain for Gehenna Gaming on January 9th at 8pm ES.

[10-Dec-20 08:18 PM] saintnexan#6715
Does either side have access to magic, and if so, what kinds?
[10-Dec-20 08:21 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Like spells, not in the core book, but there are magic items and even spells that appear in adventures in the supplemental book, “Night of the Wendigo and Other Tales.” There are also magical spells that become available in the book “Six Gun Red: Characters and Stories.” Both of these books will be available ion January or February.
[10-Dec-20 08:22 PM] saintnexan#6715
Looks like you’re serious about making this a new game line!
[10-Dec-20 08:24 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Absolutely serious. I already have plans for additional books as well.
[10-Dec-20 08:24 PM] saintnexan#6715
Nice!
[10-Dec-20 08:25 PM] saintnexan#6715
What would you say is the biggest advantage Saddles of Samhain has over, say, Deadlands?
[10-Dec-20 08:29 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
The biggest advantage Dan is that I never played Deadlands. I made a western because I have a personal passion for Westerns. I never compare my products to opposing products, but I can say this. I pay a lot of attention details, and hand picked every encounter for interest, originality, and challenge. I try to choose creatures which a re non-standard. Beypng who I am, and what I bring, I would say price. All of my products are kept inexpensive. I want people to buy them and not hurt themselves doing it.
[10-Dec-20 08:29 PM] saintnexan#6715
A very good answer!
[10-Dec-20 08:30 PM] saintnexan#6715
Do you plan on continuing to put out adventures as well as sourcebooks?
[10-Dec-20 08:32 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Yes Dan, Worlds of Pulp transcends many genres. That being said, I have products screwed down on the work bench now. However, I intend to keep coming back to the Western. One reason, is that Western Archetypes are common across other genres.
[10-Dec-20 08:34 PM] saintnexan#6715
I’d like to review the system, but first, do you have a character sheet (or sample character) that we can see?
[10-Dec-20 08:37 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
I am having some issues with my website, but the character sheet can be downloaded there. Hang on. http://scaldcrow.com/Page2.html.
[10-Dec-20 08:37 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
brb
[10-Dec-20 08:37 PM] saintnexan#6715
Certainly!
[10-Dec-20 08:39 PM] sodanugs#9620
One thing I’ve always wondered about Western themed games is how classes are approached, ie how do characters differentiate themselves combat-wise and mechanically when they’re all primarily gunslingers
[10-Dec-20 08:39 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Sorry about that, I had to put a dog out. Back now.
[10-Dec-20 08:40 PM] saintnexan#6715
No problem, @T. Glenn Bane!
[10-Dec-20 08:41 PM] sodanugs#9620
Also I grew up in Phoenix — have you ever had the chance to go to Tombstone and see the OK Corral reenactments?
[10-Dec-20 08:45 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Good question. All characters are not primarily gunslings, that is only one archetype, but certainly gunplay is a common theme. Every character has Abilities which are common to that archtype, and every character has conditions (governing character traits) that are common to the archetype. Every character may be comprised of two Archetypes. In addition to the abilities and conditions provided, the player may pick a few of their own, to further customize the character. There is also a backstory generator which helps define why the character ended up in the Wild West to begin with.
[10-Dec-20 08:46 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Many people in the west which became known as gunslingers, were just folks. Unusual circumstances put a gun in their hand.
[10-Dec-20 08:49 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
I have seen many reenactments, but have not actually been to Tombstone.
[10-Dec-20 08:49 PM] saintnexan#6715
How many Archetypes are there?
[10-Dec-20 08:49 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Pheonix is mentioned in a novella that I am writing called “Terror at Chapel Gap.”
[10-Dec-20 08:50 PM] sodanugs#9620
that’s wassup
[10-Dec-20 08:51 PM] sodanugs#9620
I’m having trouble phrasing this question properly, so feel free to pass, but obviously the Western genre has had difficulty with indigenous representation and history has been even worse (to put it lightly). I see from the description that there was an effort to pay respect to natives in the American Southwest. What was that research and writing process like for you and how did you approach this contentious aspect from a narrative, genre, and aesthetic perspective
[10-Dec-20 08:52 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Over thirty, not wearing my glasses. Not forty though.
[10-Dec-20 08:54 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
I’m not going to pass on this. Give me a moment.
[10-Dec-20 08:58 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
I don’t villainize Native Americans. I avoid a great amount of stereotypes in this game, including Natives, Women, and African Americans, all of whom were treated by poorly by Hollywood.
[10-Dec-20 09:00 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
The truth of the west, was that there were alot of people hurt, and much of it could have been avoided.
[10-Dec-20 09:02 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
On a different note, I do include several native mythic creatures in the monster gallery.
[10-Dec-20 09:02 PM] saintnexan#6715
Cool!
[10-Dec-20 09:04 PM] saintnexan#6715
Can you give us an overview of the system?
[10-Dec-20 09:05 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
I also tried to be true to the actual myths and stories as could. I promise you, there are creatures you don’t know. We have all (at least heard of) the Skin Walker, and the Wendigo, but have you heard of Raw Gums Child, or the giant spider, Djieien?
[10-Dec-20 09:06 PM] saintnexan#6715
I have not!
[10-Dec-20 09:07 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
There are also statistics for Chupicabra, Boo Hags, and other often, overlooked creatures from Mexico and remote parts of North America.
[10-Dec-20 09:07 PM] saintnexan#6715
How big is the Samhain bestiary?
[10-Dec-20 09:09 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
33 mosters, plus a sult called, The Circle of Night.
[10-Dec-20 09:10 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Cult
[10-Dec-20 09:13 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
The system is 2d6 based. Reroll doubles, snake eyes always lose, and box cars always win. There are numerous subtleties to how this rule is applied. Each Ability is measured by ranks. The higher the rank the more Successes can be obtained in an Ability Test. Most tests require the character check two abilities (One Core Ability…Attribute) and one Ability from the character’s skill set.
[10-Dec-20 09:17 PM] sodanugs#9620
2d6 is a solid system base
[10-Dec-20 09:18 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
I think so too. It offers an element of unpredictability which plays well at the table.
[10-Dec-20 09:20 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Hang on a sec.
[10-Dec-20 09:23 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
I was recently review by Rolling Boxcars, they did a pretty fair job of laying out my system. If you would like to read it, I will make it available. Its pretty lengthy though.

Folks, I really hope you drop by and give my game a try. I don’t know what your other experiences are with Western RPGs, but I promise you that this one is smooth, respectful, and action packed. It also includes 126 story hooks, and unique random event generators to help you keep your game going.
[10-Dec-20 09:27 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Dan, do you have any more questions? I am still good for a couple more?
[10-Dec-20 09:29 PM] saintnexan#6715
How does combat work?
[10-Dec-20 09:35 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
There are four phases in a turn; a Winning Phase, A Losing Phase, and a Second Winning Phase. The turn ends with a resolution phase. Every character is allowed to move and take an action in a phase Boxcar Points may be spent for additional activity. Showdown are handled differently. I call it going letterbox, where the gunfighter(s) are allowed to preempt initiative. If a character is killed by being reduced to Zero Hits, they are allowed a death save on the resolution phase, Otherwise, the contestents pit their offensive abilities against their opponents defensive abilities; each make contested rolls, with the winner being the one with the larger number of successes.
[10-Dec-20 09:35 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Man my typing is poor when I’m tired.
[10-Dec-20 09:36 PM] saintnexan#6715
What is your least favorite aspect of Wild West Horse Opera?
[10-Dec-20 09:42 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Hmmm. Good question. Hang on. There were some elements in earlier Worlds of Pulp products which slowed things down, but they have been addressed and corrected in WWHO. I would liked to have included more characters and archetypes in the core book. But that’s okay, that what additional books are for. I am just going to leave it at that. I am happy with the end result.

No worries Dan, mine too.
[10-Dec-20 09:44 PM] saintnexan#6715
Is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[10-Dec-20 09:47 PM] T. Glenn Bane#2757
Yeah, the firearms listed in the equipment section are as famous as the archetypes. They are considered the guns in the West that garnered the most recognition. Also, every character who wants a gun, is given piece of junk in the beginning called a Janky Pistol.
[10-Dec-20 09:48 PM] saintnexan#6715
Ha! Awesome. 🙂
