7:30 PM +Brian_Shutter: Hello! My name is Brian Shutter, I am 38 years old hailing from upstate NY. I wrote a game called Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland which is currently on Kickstarter!
7:31 PM +Brian_Shutter: Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland is a Ultra-Violent, and style matters tabletop RPG, that builds off of the “BX” rules. Half Medieval Fantasy half Sci-Fi, neon lords of the toxic wasteland is a no-holds-barred to the max game! Oozing 80’s and 90’s nostalgia the game features items from Ninja Stars to Fanny packs in addition to many references
7:31 PM +Brian_Shutter: to the era.
7:31 PM +Brian_Shutter: (Done)
7:31 PM ~Dan: Thanks, Brian_Shutter! The floor is open to questions!
7:31 PM ~Dan: Can you tell us more about the premise of the setting?
7:33 PM +Brian_Shutter: Yes. The Neon Wars of 1992 ended the world as we know it and ushered in the New-Dark ages. From the darkness rose the new era known as the Gnarly Age
7:34 PM +Brian_Shutter: in which magic, mixed with the technology of the period of the 1980’s- the early ’90s, created the cassette futurism seen in the Neo-Terraxx(Which the world is called in the future)
7:34 PM +Brian_Shutter: (done)\
7:35 PM ~Dan: What was the war about, and how was it fought?
7:35 PM +Brian_Shutter: That information has been lost in the sands of time and left for the chronosages to ponder over as they puff the sacred smoke
7:36 PM ~Dan: Heh. 🙂
7:36 PM ~Dan: Did magic show up after the Neon Wars, or was it around already? Or is that lost in the sands of time as well?
7:37 PM +Brian_Shutter: So magic came after the Neon Wars. Demons make pacts with mankind in exchange for their souls to wage battle for the Demonlord when the body dies.
7:38 PM +Brian_Shutter: In exchange of the soul the Demonlord grants the War Wizard the ability to wield face melting magic
7:38 PM +Brian_Shutter: When the demons came to our plane in the new-dark ages and the 1st pact was made then did we see the dark destructive force of magic
7:39 PM ~Dan: So all magicians have sold their souls in this setting?
7:39 PM +Brian_Shutter: yes
7:39 PM +Brian_Shutter: Magic isn’t kind or nice its evil black and destructive. Its black metal blasting on 11
7:40 PM ~Dan: So how do people tend to react to War Wizards?
7:41 PM +Brian_Shutter: They fear them to an extent but kinda put up with them. There are other “casters” they just dont use magic
7:41 PM ~Dan: Really? What do they use?
7:42 PM +Brian_Shutter: The Holy Smiter gains his ‘Casting” by praying to his God in hopes of purging the world of the Xeno threats, The Skull Jammer “casts” using hacks from his tape deck
7:43 PM +Brian_Shutter: Then there is the Star Spawn, a mysterious Xeno race who use telekinesis
7:43 PM +Brian_Shutter: (done)
7:45 PM ~Dan: Speaking of races, what races are available to play?
7:45 PM +Brian_Shutter: So we are a race as class game, playing off of our BX roots.
7:48 PM +Brian_Shutter: We had 10 classes in the Core Book but recently added an 11th class as it was unlocked in a stretch goal:
7:49 PM +Brian_Shutter: The Brutacorn; a biomechanical bi-corn that’s been exiled from their society.
7:49 PM +Brian_Shutter: Cosmic Barbarian; a dual weapon-wielding maniac who snorts cosmic stardust to fuel his rage.
7:49 PM +Brian_Shutter: Cyberskin; bio-engineered clones of Ex-President Ronald Reagan.
7:49 PM +Brian_Shutter: Death Bringer; master of melee carnage can take on multiple baddies at once.
7:49 PM +Brian_Shutter: Dwarfling; Interstellar immigrants who utilize their luck to gain an edge in any perilous engagement.
7:49 PM +Brian_Shutter: Holy Smiter; Mankind’s champion against all that is chaotic and Xeno who uses holy power granted by a God.
7:49 PM +Brian_Shutter: Night Stalker; A deadly martial artist who uses stealth and shadows to strike hard from.
7:49 PM +Brian_Shutter: Skull Jammer; Tape Deck jockeys who can Hack their way through dungeons.
7:49 PM +Brian_Shutter: Star Spawn; Strange psychic aliens whose purpose on the planet is unknown.
7:49 PM +Brian_Shutter: War Wizard; Humanoids who sold their souls to Demonlords in exchange for the ability to cast dark magic.
7:49 PM +Brian_Shutter: H.E.A.T.H.E.R is the 11th class to be added
7:49 PM +Brian_Shutter: Uploaded file: (Link: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/f4618456a110450c31bab0c6fab59a1a/HEATHER%20PROMO.jpg)https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/f4618456a110450c31bab0c6fab59a1a/HEATHER%20PROMO.jpg
7:50 PM +Brian_Shutter: And there is a 12th Class hidden somewhere within the core rule book
7:50 PM +Brian_Shutter: (done)
7:51 PM ~Dan: Who are the bad guys?
7:52 PM +Brian_Shutter: The bad guys mostly are Mutants and there is a wide variety of them, but the monster manual in the core rule book has over 100 different monsters you may encounter in the wastelands or the ruins of the forgotten world
7:53 PM ~Dan: Very impressive! I was going to ask about mutants… I take it that the PCs can’t have mutations?
7:53 PM +Brian_Shutter: they can end up mutated
7:55 PM ~Dan: How “gonzo” are the mutations?
7:55 PM +Brian_Shutter: So the main humanoid sector and the beacon of reason and “humanity” is Detroit-Prime. Think mega city one in Judge Dredd but not AS big. There muties are not allowed above the lowest levels
7:55 PM +Brian_Shutter: they can get pretty wild
7:56 PM +Brian_Shutter: there are three categories of mutations Mild, Major, and Abilities
7:56 PM ~Dan: (Howdy, GenoFoxx!)
7:57 PM +Brian_Shutter: They range from pointy ears to growing a spell tumor everyday that you can extract from your body and cast it.
7:59 PM +Brian_Shutter: Uploaded file: (Link: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/6787df4cbef8ab763318b04a8f985e32/Raider%202.png)https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/6787df4cbef8ab763318b04a8f985e32/Raider%202.png
7:59 PM +Brian_Shutter: A typical born into mutation in the wastelands tend to look like
7:59 PM ~Dan: NIce!
7:59 PM +Brian_Shutter: Uploaded file: (Link: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/906ffe00ab577f4f3cacb4fb69ec2cde/Raider%201.png)https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/906ffe00ab577f4f3cacb4fb69ec2cde/Raider%201.png

8:00 PM +Brian_Shutter: Tends to be easier to show off some of the art from the mutants
8:00 PM ~Dan: What is the bleeding edge of technology, and how common is technology?
8:02 PM +Brian_Shutter: So there is a genre of sci fi called cassette futurism. We coined the term Post Apocalyptic cassette futurism
8:03 PM +Brian_Shutter: The tech is 80s 90s amped up to 11 with the sci-fi element and mixed with the other Xeno tech that finds its way into the world
8:04 PM ~Dan: Can you give an example of cassette futurism in the game? I’ve never heard that term before.
8:04 PM +Brian_Shutter: Tech is common in the Human sectors but generally discarded by the Mutants out in the wastelands
8:07 PM +Brian_Shutter: Yeah so the Skull Jammer is a Hacker who uses tape decks and stores everything on data tapes. There are these giant man sized vat machines called bio-flesh regenerators, they are designed to keep a cyber skin is stasis or they have the ability to heal any character. They run on data tapes and one is needed for healing. The cyberskins themselves run
8:07 PM +Brian_Shutter: on a DCT, a digital conscious tape, it has all their essence stored on the tape.
8:09 PM ~Dan: What’s the bleeding edge of combat technology?
8:11 PM +Brian_Shutter: Combat tech ranges from brass knuckles to xenocryst melee weapons (a alien material that is sharper than steel and lighter) Missile weapons are the same they range from ninja stars, blaster rifles, plasma flint lock pistols to more high tech machine guns
8:12 PM +Brian_Shutter: Uploaded file: (Link: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/8c6c0ae60ccef01085c580e4fc945c39/Gear1.jpeg)https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/8c6c0ae60ccef01085c580e4fc945c39/Gear1.jpeg
8:13 PM ~Dan: I think you touched on this earlier, but are there cybernetics?
8:17 PM +Brian_Shutter: There is a class called Cyberskins, in which they were cyborg clones of Reagan frozen in time for some reason. Rather than a traditional level up other classes and other games have, the cyberskin gains more cybernetics to enhance them further to be more lethal in combat or in other aspects of adventuring.
8:19 PM +Brian_Shutter: Also there is the Brutacorn. They are a race of bi-corned bipedal descendants of the unicorn. The bi-corns are torn into two factions and have been at war for centuries. When a bi-corn warrior comes back mangled and dismembered they get cybernetics but are seen as a blight on the tribes are are exiled
8:21 PM +Brian_Shutter: Humanoids can get cybernetic implants but reserved mostly for the ultra-rich Detroit-Prime socialites and risky outside of the humanoid sectors. Might end up leaving more flesh and organs on the table to be traded away
8:24 PM +Brian_Shutter: It’s one big gonzo Saturday morning cartoon
8:25 PM ~Dan: I can see that! 🙂
8:26 PM +Brian_Shutter: 8) 8)
8:26 PM ~Dan: How is task resolution handled?
8:27 PM +Brian_Shutter: roll under stats. So if the task falls under let’s say Agility, and you have an Agility score of 15, you roll a D20 and have to get a 15 or lower to succeed
8:28 PM ~Dan: I see… No skills, then?
8:29 PM +Brian_Shutter: No skills, we try to push more for Brains over Stats. Smarter players not a bunch of numbers on a sheet
8:31 PM ~Dan: And how does combat work?
8:33 PM +Brian_Shutter: Combat follows the BX system its broken down to what we call phases. Where it goes Surprised, Initiative, Missile weapons, Spells, Melee single handed, Melee double handed, back to the initiative.
8:33 PM +Brian_Shutter: oops movement after initiative
8:34 PM ~Dan: (Howdy, kiwi_51!)
8:36 PM ~Dan: What does a typical adventure look like? It is a post-apocalypitc dungeon crawl?
8:37 PM ~Dan: (Howdy, FreeGamer!)
8:37 PM +Brian_Shutter: Yes its a typical crawl. More kick in the door slay the baddies take the cash and run than chatting up NPCs.
8:38 PM +Brian_Shutter: Its much like DCC in that vein
8:45 PM ~Dan: (Sorry. IRL distraction there.)
8:45 PM +Brian_Shutter: No worries
8:46 PM ~Dan: Do you consider this a comedy game of a sort?
8:46 PM +Brian_Shutter: so I consider it tongue-in-cheek there is humor mixed with over the top violence
8:47 PM ~Dan: Sort of like Heavy Metal (the movie)?
8:47 PM +Brian_Shutter: Yes! Exactly! Also a bit Paranoia RPG mixed in for good measure
8:48 PM * ~Dan nods
8:48 PM ~Dan: Very cool.
8:49 PM ~Dan: Is combat ability based upon class?
8:50 PM +Brian_Shutter: Yes. A Death Bringer (balanced fighter class) can hit and crit better than a War Wizard.
8:50 PM +Brian_Shutter: also deal a ton more melee damage
8:51 PM ~Dan: For armor, do you use AC or DR?
8:51 PM +Brian_Shutter: in the same vein a cosmic barbarian is the only class that can dual wield melee weapons but not use anything tech
8:51 PM +Brian_Shutter: AC
8:52 PM +Brian_Shutter: Everyone starts with a AC of 9 then adds armor or other bonuses. Ascending armor class.
8:53 PM * ~Dan nods
8:53 PM ~Dan: Do you include rules for vehicles and vehicle combat?
8:55 PM +Brian_Shutter: So there may be a small portion in the core rules about it? But there is a supplement in the works that deals with all that jazz, but its mostly skateboards, bmx bikes along with your typical mad max style wastelands cruisers. The supplement is called “Hack and Thrash”
8:56 PM ~Dan: Nice. 🙂
8:57 PM +Brian_Shutter: Because kickflipping to gain a boost on a war wizard spell is something I need in my life.
8:57 PM ~Dan: 😀
8:59 PM ~Dan: Given the mix of post-apocalyptic sci-fi and fantasy, are the monsters in the setting more post-apocalyptic or fantastical in nature?
8:59 PM +Brian_Shutter: both
9:00 PM +Brian_Shutter: its an insane amount. We have monsters we came up with and your “classic” rpg tropes we hit with the neon paint job
9:00 PM ~Dan: How big is the bestiary?
9:01 PM +Brian_Shutter: 119 entries at this current point
9:01 PM +Brian_Shutter: might be more cause im always adding to it
9:01 PM ~Dan: Good!
9:01 PM ~Dan: Can you give us some highlights?
9:01 PM +Brian_Shutter: sure!
9:02 PM +Brian_Shutter: COMBAT AMPHIBIANS are ninja weapon toting “battletoads”
9:03 PM +Brian_Shutter: CRYSTAL SKELETON animated bones from a very radioactive mutant race. The bones are magical
9:04 PM +Brian_Shutter: DROOL-AID MAN is the kool-aid man but is bloodthirsty
9:04 PM +Brian_Shutter: HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN is exactly what you think it is
9:05 PM +Brian_Shutter: LAZER-CAVEMAN same for him lol
9:05 PM ~Dan: Ha! That’s awesome!
9:05 PM +Brian_Shutter: MEAT TITAN mayor mc-cheese with a vendetta
9:05 PM +Brian_Shutter: RIP CLAW, THE EVIL TURTLE FROM THE STARS
9:06 PM +Brian_Shutter: Pizza Sludge
9:06 PM +Brian_Shutter: Super Soaker
9:06 PM +Brian_Shutter: Cyber Zombies
9:06 PM +Brian_Shutter: Vermin-Folk are skaven but they are the main manufacturers of all the drugs in Neo-TerraXX
9:08 PM ~Dan: What is a Super Soaker? 🙂
9:09 PM +Brian_Shutter: Its a mutant who carries a super soaker filled with liquid hallucinogens to spay in peoples eyes
9:10 PM * ~Dan chuckles
9:11 PM ~Dan: You should check out this game: (Link: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/257412/METAL-WORLD-The-Rough-Cut)https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/257412/METAL-WORLD-The-Rough-Cut
9:11 PM +Brian_Shutter: But anything could be in that gun. Acid, stink spray.. you name it
9:12 PM +Brian_Shutter: lol it looks cool!
9:12 PM ~Dan: The author is a frequent visitor here. You two would get along famously. 🙂
9:13 PM +Brian_Shutter: Yeah it looks like it!!!
9:13 PM +Brian_Shutter: Love it
9:13 PM ~Dan: His setting features a volcano made of dragons that spews more dragons.
9:14 PM ~Dan: But! I digress.
9:14 PM +Brian_Shutter: lol dope! Yeah that’s what I love about TTRPGs our games are so alike yet so different
9:14 PM +Brian_Shutter: but can mesh well
9:14 PM * ~Dan nods
9:14 PM ~Dan: Okay! Now it is time for danhunsaker’s Favorite Question(TM)!
9:14 PM ~Dan: You there, danhunsaker?
9:15 PM ~Dan: (He seldom is these days.)
9:15 PM ~Dan: I shall ask, then!
9:15 PM ~Dan: What is your *least* favorite aspect of Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland?
9:16 PM +Brian_Shutter: Hmmm thats a good question!
9:17 PM +Brian_Shutter: My least fav aspect is prolly the keeping with turns outside of combat
9:18 PM +Brian_Shutter: its needed I think for time keeping like when spells or other effects wear off but I feel its too tedious for a game that is full throttle
9:18 PM * ~Dan nods
9:18 PM ~Dan: A very reasonable answer!
9:19 PM ~Dan: In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
9:21 PM +Brian_Shutter: A fun aspect of the game that gets alot of attention is Hairstyles. In character creation you choose one and it gains you some sort of stat ability or some in game bonus. The same goes for sunglasses! They are purely aesthetic and gain abilities but in no way hinder your sight in dark dungeons!
9:21 PM ~Dan: Nice touch. 🙂
9:22 PM +Brian_Shutter: And Macho Man Randy Savage is one of many Gods in the game. That one has gained alot of attention
9:22 PM ~Dan: Is the Slim Jim his sacrement?
9:24 PM +Brian_Shutter: Even to one of our 1st comments on the drivethru playtest someone said “Lord Randy be praised!” and it stuck with the game. Slim Jim no but mechanically separated animal parts spiced and put into a meat snack are!
9:24 PM ~Dan: Heh. Excellent. 🙂
9:25 PM ~Dan: Is this your first RPG?
9:25 PM +Brian_Shutter: Yes it is!
9:25 PM ~Dan: Congrats on knocking it out of the park on your first try!
9:26 PM +Brian_Shutter: I have ideas for other ones but I am in love with this setting and style that I think ill stay on this for a while. Thanks! I was shocked that so many people are into this sorta thing!
9:26 PM ~Dan: 🙂
9:27 PM ~Dan: Thanks so much for joining us, Brian_Shutter!
9:27 PM +Brian_Shutter: Thanks for having me! It was a blast!
9:28 PM ~Dan: Usual reminder: If you’ve enjoyed this Q&A and would like to treat me to a coffee or two, you can do so at (Link: https://www.ko-fi.com/gmshoe)https://www.ko-fi.com/gmshoe . Anything’s appreciated! 🙂
9:28 PM ~Dan: Now, if you’ll give me just a sec, I’ll get the log posted and link you!
9:28 PM +Brian_Shutter: Oh for sure!
