4:21 PM +Andrew: hi I’m Andrew J Lucas and I’ve been contributing to RPGS and small fiction anthologies for decades now. (since 1986)
4:22 PM +Andrew: my current baby is a book called New Bristol and is a superhero setting using two different RPG rulesets.
4:22 PM +Andrew: Savage Worlds (SWADE) and the new Endless realms game from Lunar Games
4:23 PM +Andrew: tthis book is intended to be the launch point for a series of supporting books and adventures for a superhero campaign..
4:24 PM +Andrew: our conceit is taht thsi city on lake Michigan has a rich past and was influencial in the forming of the USA as we know it.
4:25 PM +Andrew: then in the 1950’s a villain Baron Faustus took over the city and threatened the contry.
4:25 PM +Andrew: forcing the heroes of the day to throw it the entire city out of our reality.
4:26 PM +Andrew: now it returns and with it a population changed by their experiences.
4:26 PM +Andrew: an that’s the basis for our 120 page campaign setting and adventure!
4:27 PM ~Dan: (Ready for questions? 🙂 )
4:27 PM +Andrew: surely!
4:27 PM ~Dan: Great!
4:28 PM ~Dan: Are the PCs assumed to be from inside the city, outside the city, or a mix of both?
4:29 PM +Andrew: the introductory adventure runs the players through the mystery of this fictional city that is becoming more engrained in the US psyche, history adn memory.
4:29 PM +Andrew: the players are examining this from outside the city and will know nothing of the city
4:30 PM +Andrew: that said a gamemaster can launch a campaign with the PCs being residents and the book will be rich enough to allow this.
4:31 PM ~Dan: I see… Can you give us an overview of what the returned New Bristol is like?
4:32 PM +Andrew: oh man! it’s an assortment of 8 districts each with their own feel. part of the setting involves a quantum bubble surrounding, protecting and powering the city.
4:32 PM +Andrew: teh closer to the bubble the less civilized the city is
4:33 PM +Andrew: downtown is high tech and very refined like Manhattan or what I think Metropolis would be like
4:34 PM +Andrew: closer to teh border we have districts that are more chaotic. working shipyards, repurposed estates that now house air pirates,
4:34 PM +Andrew: an then there is the french quarter where the magicians live.
4:34 PM ~Dan: So given the shipyards and air pirates, I take it that wherever the city was, the inhabitants could come and go?
4:35 PM +Andrew: tehre is a university district that is based on the UBC lands in Vancouver and here we a have a university a park and dinosaurs!
4:35 PM ~Dan: Nice. 🙂
4:35 PM +Andrew: the inhabitants woudl be forced to scavenge their noew environments
4:36 PM +Andrew: so some of the heroes we had in the city in 1950 have chanegd and adapted to this environement
4:36 PM +Andrew: we have 12 NPCs of note, with stats and histories prior to 1950 and then the same NPCs with new stats after living for decades in teh city.the
4:37 PM ~Dan: Have they aged?
4:37 PM +Andrew: part of the theme of the city is ‘what do you do to survive?’ ‘ ho will you change.’
4:37 PM +Andrew: some have aged, some have died and been replaced.
4:38 PM +LaggingDice: Oh hey that worked
4:38 PM +Andrew: a couple have even merged with the city
4:38 PM ~Dan: (Howdy, LaggingDice!)
4:38 PM ~Dan: Merged how?
4:40 PM +Andrew: the city has been travelling through alternate realities and quantum realms for decades. one of the major NPCs has used his technology and magic to guide the city and is using the old New Bristol Meseum (now relabeled the Hall of Science)
4:40 PM +Andrew: to extend his reach and life.
4:40 PM +Andrew: and guide the travel of the city
4:41 PM +Andrew: much of the cities infrastructure has been repurposed to power the city , feed the population , and navigate through teh void.
4:42 PM ~Dan: How often would the city move around?
4:42 PM +Andrew: our ICONIC character is Captain Daring (think Captain America with a jet pack) and she’s been forced to make some changes and accomodations as the city has travelled
4:43 PM +Andrew: at first it was random, but the inhabitants figured out how to determine where and when the city would move.
4:44 PM +Andrew: using teh university and a particle accelerator they set a tether to our planet.
4:44 PM +Andrew: a portal to the jurassic period.
4:44 PM +Andrew: two way hence the dinosaur problem.
4:44 PM +Andrew: but lots of food. 🙂
4:44 PM ~Dan: Heh. 🙂
4:45 PM +Andrew: thare will be plenty of surprises in the city and lots of iconic locations we will be expanding upon in later books.
4:45 PM +Andrew: you’ll be able to see our inspiration from classic comic books.
4:46 PM ~Dan: Is the city meant to be dropped in to an existing superhero setting?
4:46 PM +Andrew: Our Future Spire is an iconic part of teh skyline (you can see it in our art) and is our version of the Avengers tower or the BAxter Building.
4:47 PM +Andrew: it sure is meant to be dropped into an existing campaign.
4:47 PM +Andrew: you know those storylines where alien’s attack?
4:47 PM +Andrew: it happens and then its done.
4:47 PM +Andrew: well this campiagn will provide real life consequences to this event.
4:48 PM +Andrew: how does the economy react to a new major city reapearing?
4:48 PM +Andrew: what about legal repercusions when new stocks appear in the market/
4:49 PM +Andrew: heck there is even tax epercussions.
4:49 PM +Andrew: will chicago like having an new rival? probably not. 🙂
4:49 PM ~Dan: Heh. 🙂
4:50 PM ~Dan: So what happened to Baron Faustus? Clearly, he’s not in control of the city anymore.
4:50 PM +Andrew: like most books of this type tehre will be suggestiosn on how to incorporate it as a new campaign and as an addition to an existing one.
4:50 PM +Andrew: oh that’s a secret.
4:50 PM +Andrew: but he’s still around.
4:51 PM +Andrew: time moves strangely in New Bristol.
4:51 PM ~Dan: The inhabitants don’t remember what happened to him?
4:51 PM +Andrew: personally I love the character of Doctor Doom and Baron Faustus is my homage to Doom.
4:52 PM +Andrew: the inhabitants of New Bristol are ruled by him. the rest of the world has forgotten everything to do with teh city.
4:52 PM ~Dan: Oh, he’s *still* in charge?
4:53 PM +Andrew: yes
4:53 PM +Andrew: very much… kind of…
4:53 PM +Andrew: in charge but not seen often.
4:53 PM * ~Dan nods
4:54 PM +Andrew: he has a spokesman dispurse his orders for him
4:54 PM +Andrew: the Crimson Cardinal
4:54 PM +Andrew: initially players won;t know if Faustus is alive or not.
4:55 PM +Andrew: and there will be an adventure revolving around that specific mystery.
4:55 PM ~Dan: What was left behind when the city left, and what happened to it when the city came back?
4:56 PM +Andrew: a huge hole on the shore of Lake Michigan.
4:56 PM +Andrew: and in the memory of the world
4:56 PM +Andrew: for instance you know that the war in the pacific was ended with Japan signing tehir surrender on teh USS Missouri
4:57 PM ~Dan: Right.
4:57 PM +Andrew: in fact this happened on the USS Montana
4:57 PM +Andrew: which is in New Bristol and left with the city
4:57 PM +Andrew: no one remembers this.
4:58 PM ~Dan: Interesting.
4:58 PM +Andrew: at least they don’t until New Bristol returns
4:59 PM ~Dan: They have to discover the Montana, right? They don’t just suddenly remember?
5:00 PM +Andrew: families will remember relettives. the Great Lakes Motor Company will be remembered and countless other items large and small.
5:00 PM +Andrew: treaties with France, and Canada. all sorts of things.
5:01 PM ~Dan: If there was a Great Lakes Motor Company, where did people think their GLM cars came from while the city was gone?
5:01 PM +Andrew: not to mention the aliens…
5:02 PM +Andrew: that’s the thing with magic… you know your car is a GLMC heck some of our vets fought in tanks made by them.
5:02 PM +Andrew: but when asked… and you think about it… well you drive a Ford.
5:02 PM ~Dan: Hmm. Interesting.
5:02 PM +Andrew: one th coast of Lake Michigan no one looks at the crater where the city was.
5:03 PM ~Dan: Weird.
5:03 PM +Andrew: but when it returns the first thing that happens is a tsunami swamping a local town.
5:03 PM ~Dan: Yeah, I was assuming that the crater would be filled with water.
5:04 PM +Andrew: it will be fun for GM to play out those changes large and small
5:04 PM * ~Dan nods
5:04 PM ~Dan: I can see that.
5:04 PM +Andrew: we have a location mapped out for maximum damage!! 🙂
5:04 PM ~Dan: I’m assuming that New Bristol requires the full-blown anything-goes superhero universe to work?
5:04 PM +Andrew: system wise. Savage Worlds will be a nice fit for this book
5:05 PM +Andrew: it does, but it can be scaled up and down.
5:05 PM +Andrew: there are districts that are perfect for street level crimefighters.
5:05 PM +Andrew: or magicians
5:06 PM +Andrew: or Jungle heroes
5:06 PM +Andrew: or ultra powerful heroes.
5:07 PM +Andrew: while the book has lots happening it will be scaled with plenty of suggestions for how a GM can handle various types of gameplay.
5:08 PM +Andrew: our writing team are an assortment of new and seasoned writers.
5:08 PM ~Dan: That’s cool.
5:08 PM +Andrew: and great at putting together this type of book.
5:09 PM +Andrew: we are all really excited by the project
5:09 PM ~Dan: Good!
5:09 PM ~Dan: How is funding going?
5:10 PM +Andrew: we are about to put out our second update and we are at about 20% funded with 20 days to go.
5:10 PM ~Dan: I wish you guys the very best of luck!
5:10 PM +Andrew: We’re just hitting our stride with our promotions and marketing.
5:11 PM * ~Dan nods
5:11 PM +Andrew: I’m confident we’ll fund! and the book will be bautiful.
5:11 PM ~Dan: Is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
5:12 PM +Andrew: Kirsty from Lunar GAmes is doing our layout and if you look at the quality of Endless Realms you’ll get an idea of how slick this will look.
5:12 PM ~Dan: Endless Realms is a multi-genre game, IIRC?
5:12 PM +Andrew: I think I’ve bene typing a lot here. 🙂 were there any queations?
5:12 PM +Andrew: questions
5:14 PM +Andrew: should I put a link to the kickstarter here?
5:14 PM ~Dan: Certainly!
5:14 PM +Andrew: (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coyotesisters/new-bristol-a-campaign-setting-for-your-supers-ttrpg-swade?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=new%20bristol)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coyotesisters/new-bristol-a-campaign-setting-for-your-supers-ttrpg-swade?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=new%20bristol
5:14 PM ~Dan: Did you see my Endless Realms question?
5:15 PM +Andrew: did now. 🙂
5:15 PM +Andrew: endless realms is in fact intended to be multi genre
5:15 PM * ~Dan nods
5:16 PM ~Dan: I did a Q&A for that a while back, but it grows difficult to keep them all straight in my advanced age. 🙂
5:16 PM +Andrew: the core book is fantasy oriented but the system is versatile enough for any style of game play.
5:16 PM +Andrew: hah
5:17 PM ~Dan: So Savage Worlds I get. What was the Endless Realms angle? (Not that it’s unworthy of use. Just seems kind of out of left field.)
5:18 PM +Andrew: well Kirsty from Lunar Games is one of my writers and my Kickstarter Guru.
5:18 PM ~Dan: Makes sense!
5:18 PM +Andrew: she suggested we make this a dual system book and that her team would do the system conversion work.
5:18 PM ~Dan: One last question: What is the percentage of the city’s population that came from other realities?
5:19 PM +Andrew: the idea being that if her fan base wanted to start fully experiencing tehri own infinate realms
5:19 PM +Andrew: 10%
5:19 PM +Andrew: there are two races that have moved into the city
5:19 PM +Andrew: and quantum demons that appear every now and then.
5:20 PM +Andrew: the two races are very different and play with genre stereotypes.
5:20 PM +Andrew: think Elves and Andorians (from Star Trek) but very different.
5:21 PM +Andrew: there will be racial templates for players to make characters from these two races.
5:22 PM +Andrew: you might ask what they are called… and I’m leaving them nameless at the moment as we have a reward level that will allow backers to name these races if they wish.
5:22 PM +Andrew: or a location or an NPC
5:22 PM ~Dan: Nice. 🙂
5:22 PM ~Dan: Oh, usual reminder: If you’ve enjoyed this Q&A and would like to treat me to a coffee or two, you can do so at (Link: https://www.ko-fi.com/gmshoe)https://www.ko-fi.com/gmshoe . 5:23 PM +Andrew: cheers
