These are known colloquially as Hellholes but the educated refer to them as “Abysmal Maws.” Hellholes all connect ultimately to the Infernal realm through the Abysma, but that is thousands of levels and a maze of tunnels and caverns down from the surface.

2:36 PM ~Dan: So to what degree is this a “traditional” fantasy setting?
2:36 PM ~Dan: Elves, dwarves, orcs, etc.
2:37 PM +Mark_RH: Yes, World of Darkness was a complete world… of monsters. But we were still able to build on the real modern world. This is a whole new world, utterly unique and detailed down to the kind of nails they use to build ships (none, nails rust).
2:37 PM +Mark_RH: Its not really a traditional setting, and the lowlands are VERY much a low fantasy type world akin to somethign like Game of Thrones. However, the further you go from homes the stranger things get.
2:38 PM +Mark_RH: While we don’t have Dwarves and Elves we do have Metalborn “Branches” which at least on the surface maybe resemble them. Just enough to not leave players stranded in a completely alien world.
2:39 PM +nicholas_kitts: What makes those regions low fantasy? Seems like the world tree and everything is pretty fantastical to me. Do they just not know the world’s origins?
2:40 PM +Mark_RH: Well, you can’t usually see the world tree, you have to be on a high spot on a very clear day, and most people don’t travel much.
2:41 PM +Mark_RH: The Sacra Dwimmer of the Sacred Prisma Church is powerful enough that it keeps most of the unanny nature of the world at bay, including the Tempest raging in the world sea.
2:42 PM +Mark_RH: And of course most cultures on earth have truly fantastic origin stories, many of which people take very literally, yet humans always somehow make even the strangest of lives mundane and normal.
2:42 PM +MC: one of our Mortal Races (Everborn):The Ælv have a silver complexion and hue to their skin. Their deep eyes are captivating, shining through the most elaborate of their masks or cosmetic markings. Ælv eyes are black, dark grey, or a deep golden. Their features, usually hidden beneath their ornate masks, are delicate and exalted, possessing thin,

There is something precise and yet off-putting about their faces; as if they are a flattering, yet severe portrait representing the Ælv instead of their actual visage. AElv display an entire spectrum of masculine and feminine features and mannerisms that make it difficult for an outsider to determine any single Ælv’s gender, especially since AElv do not care to deal with this concept.

3:21 PM +Mark_RH: Actually the Jailer is worshipped… because only his daily pattern keeps Skarl and the Vile gods in their cages. Prison could get a whole lot worse if the real baddies starting running the prison.

3:22 PM +Mark_RH: In the same vein as WORLD OF DARKNESS the idea is that everyone is a monster is a way, and that everyone can be a hero.
3:22 PM +Mark_RH: Good and evil are not based on who or what you are, but on your deeds, on how you live your life.

3:50 PM +Mark_RH: It has some new bellls and whistles added, so players can do “one roll” scenes in a more storytelling style, and save the full battles for when everyone is into a BIG MOMENT.

3:52 PM +Mark_RH: The Magic is not something Everborn (mortals) do really, though they can play with it at the margins.
3:52 PM +Mark_RH: In fact magic is a forbidden word in Lostlorn, it is used only for parlor tricks and charlatons. Uncanny and arcane are more proper terms.
3:53 PM +Mark_RH: FangKnights will be our first major spell casters, of type anyone who has played MAGE or Ars Magia will find familiar.
3:53 PM +Mark_RH: So you can play FangKnight as either Vampire Dark Ages or Mages with fangs. ;D

3:56 PM +Mark_RH: Dragons yes, but they are Trowe or Demon, and exist either in the Abymsa below or in the Troweholm also known as the realm of dreams and the fae.

3:56 PM +Mark_RH: We also have mastadons and giant turles with shells shaped by carefull molding over centuries to serve as portable castle for the Nomadi.

4:01 PM +Mark_RH: That said this part of Lostlorn where this first part of the setting is described, Vestur, is more European, but the Troweholm overall isn’t going to be purely Celtic.

4:03 PM +Mark_RH: So much of this unique world has been created now that new ideas can feed off the older ideas, and things don’t have to be borrowed whole from earth mythology, but instead be invented out of whole cloth.

4:04 PM +Mark_RH: I don’t like how the Tempest monsters haven’t been figured out fully yet and are still simply described as Cthulian.
