7:33 PM +Pat: My name is Pat McNary and i am the lead game dev for Orcs Unlimited games. we are currently working on the Kickstarter for Brass Rings a game of exploration on the rings of Saturn, as rodents.
7:34 PM +Pat: the world is a fantsy/ Steampunk version of reality so the rings have gravity water atmosphere and the other things of life. Done
7:35 PM +Arthur: Ok. First of all, great idea, it sounds great
7:36 PM +Pat: thank you
7:36 PM +Arthur: I can’t help but think about Mouse Guard. What dice system does Brass Rings use in its mechanics?
7:39 PM +Pat: it will be a target number set by the difficulty of a game master. the player will roll a (small)number of six sided dice taking the highest single die result. we will also be using an exploding to be re-rolled and added to.g die allowing a
7:39 PM +Pat: that last part got garbles sorry
7:39 PM +Pat: allowing a 6 to be re rolled and added to. this allows for results above 6
7:40 PM +Caladors: So Pat this is a pocket game, why dice? Dice require an area to throw them, why not cards or something else for results?
7:42 PM +Pat: we originally had a coin system but it tested poorly. we figured d6 would be easier to come by than many other random generators and take less time coming to a test resault and more time playing th egame
7:43 PM ~Dan: Can you link us to a character sheet?
7:43 PM +Pat: the game was originally meant to just be a pamphlet but the kickstater has been so sucsessfull we ill be groing it to a small zine size too
7:44 PM +Pat: i can give me just a moment
7:44 PM ~Dan: Sure!
7:45 PM +Pat: this is our working sheet som changes are already planned (Link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OtmUc6yvwPaIHLF8f-c4L8l5fEE7VTVO/view?usp=sharing)https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OtmUc6yvwPaIHLF8f-c4L8l5fEE7VTVO/view?usp=sharing
7:45 PM ~Dan: It says that I need access.
7:46 PM +Pat: some of the atrbutes and skills will be renaimed
7:46 PM +Pat: doh try now
7:46 PM ~Dan: There we go!
7:47 PM ~Dan: What are Pep and Soul?
7:48 PM +Pat: Pep is mostly your HP Soul is your Chi (kinda just to simplify things) you can use Soul to give bonuses to your chosen specialty it is also stun damage
7:50 PM ~Dan: (Howdy, Catseye!)
7:50 PM ~Dan: Does Body cover all physical aspects of the character?
7:51 PM +Pat: yes it is one of the names that will be changing probably to phisical
7:51 PM ~Dan: I see… So is there any way to distinguish a strong character from a nimble one?
7:55 PM +Pat: mostly in the description of the charter and species chosen. rats are stronger than mice mice a re more nimble.
7:56 PM +Pat: but mostly in naritive not alot of mechanical diffrence
7:56 PM ~Dan: I see…
7:56 PM ~Dan: Does each circle represent one d6?
7:57 PM +Arthur: So can you play as different kind of rodents?
7:57 PM +Pat: the ability will be 1d6 the skill circle will add to the end die roll
7:58 PM ~Dan: (Howdy, Electromancer!)
7:59 PM +Electromancer: I see someone got disintegrated.
7:59 PM +Pat: yes you can play as different rodents.. they have little difference mechanically. they receive bonuses to things rodents are known for squirrls will climb better than mice. rats swim well ect.
7:59 PM ~Dan: Ah… So the Abilities tell you how many dice you roll, and the Skills tell you how big a bonus you get to add to the highest die?
8:00 PM +Pat: yes
8:00 PM ~Dan: Got it.
8:00 PM +Pat: the gm will decide which combo to use for the test
8:00 PM ~Dan: So you can play mice, rats, and squirrels… Any others?
8:01 PM +Caladors: So this is a pocket game designed to be easily picked up by people. Yet the concept is fairly niche, why such a niche concept when making such a broad game?
8:02 PM ~Dan: Now, now, don’t be sexist. I’m sure it’s not just for broads.
8:02 PM +Pat: shrews are the others named spisificly but we have a sugjestion on how a GM and player could make others. it is mostly what is that rodent good at. you get bonuses to that
8:03 PM ~Dan: I would want to play a capybara. 😀
8:04 PM +Pat: originally the game started life as a business card replacement. we wanted to give away at conventions we were visiting. and we have a history of strange games so this isnt that far off the norm for us
8:04 PM +Electromancer: Is this kind of a watership down type scenario?
8:04 PM ~Dan: (Howdy, Lee!)
8:04 PM +Pat: there are no evil rodents but the humans have left the rodents behind to fend for themselves
8:05 PM ~Dan: Why did the humans bring the rodents to Saturn?
8:06 PM ~Dan: And where did the humans go?
8:07 PM +Pat: Some as pets some as experiments. we don’t spell it out exactly but the rodents are believed to have a heightened intelligence due to genetic alteration.
8:07 PM +Pat: The rodents dont know but it was in a hurry and generations ago.
8:08 PM +Pat: we never spell out why they leave just that it happened quickly and they left everything running when they did
8:08 PM +Electromancer: How long do you expect a game session to last?
8:10 PM +Pat: 2 to 4 hours is comon. (this is a TTRPG sorry i didn’t say that earlier) so as long as the GM has story and the players have caffeine
8:10 PM ~Dan: Who are the antagonists?
8:13 PM +Pat: mostly the rings but there are wild insects and other animals left behind some have mutated a lot some are genitally engendered. also the humans left their pest control drones on when they left. there are Jelly fish that float in the skies and eat air ships. and Killer Koi that can tip over ships and eat the rodents inside.
8:16 PM +Pat: The rodents must expand to survive and are exploring the rings for resources and livable places.
8:16 PM ~Dan: What are Saturn’s moons like in this setting?
8:19 PM +Pat: the setting specifically takes place on the F rings of Saturn so the moons so the sheppard moons of the F rings are the only moons that are covered. Prosthesis is the only moon the rodents have been to because of the former human Light House that is located on it near the Great Tree (the center of their civilization)
8:20 PM +Pat: lighthouses are shipping beacons and terriforming centers left behind
8:21 PM +Caladors: So I hear you talking a lot about the setting if you were to minus the setting how much would the rules be?
8:21 PM +Caladors: How many pages/line and so on.
8:22 PM +Pat: we will soon be puting the rulles on our sight to be used creative commons as the Open Orc System. they are in editing now
8:22 PM ~Dan: Can you give us an overview of the technology available to the rodents?
8:22 PM +Pat: the Open orcs system is 14 pages now but covers more than just the roddents system
8:25 PM +Pat: the tech level will be mid Victorian with some steam punk super science. steam trans and airships are common. revolvers and cartridge rifles are quickly outpacing muskets add in some sill fun steam powered super gadgets
8:26 PM +Pat: the rodents are learning from every scrap they can get left over by the humans.
8:26 PM +Electromancer: So the rodents use rodent sized versions?
8:26 PM +Pat: yes
8:27 PM +Electromancer: That’s pretty awesome.
8:27 PM +Pat: the rodents are all still a few inches tall but have evolved to be all closser in build. than in nature
8:28 PM ~Dan: Did the rodents build the steampunk stuff themselves?
8:29 PM +Pat: yes over the crose of generations
8:29 PM +Electromancer: So would a person have a sort of premade character they could dump into any game? Or would character creation be part of the start of each session?
8:30 PM +Pat: the charcter generation takes about 5 to 10 min but pre gens could easly be used
8:31 PM +Electromancer: You said the game is meant to be a bit of a pickup type game right?
8:32 PM +Pat: yes we hoped it would be a thing you did between games at gencon
8:33 PM +Caladors: So if it is a game between games can you give us the elevator pitch you give to people who you want to pick up a game with you between games?
8:33 PM +Electromancer: So does that mean you build a character at a bit higher power level than most games? In dungeons and dragons terms, you’d basically be a level 3 or so to start power wise, versus a level 1?
8:34 PM +Pat: we have found that steam punk rodents exploring the Rings of Saturn works well
8:34 PM +Pat: it would be at a mid level for dnd
8:35 PM +Electromancer: Sweet. I hoped for access to plenty of the content right from the get go. Dnd can be a slog til you get anywhere character wise.
8:36 PM +Pat: there is a advancement by goals system that allows you to have somthing to work twords and the abiltiy to advance a character even in a 2 to 4 hour game but not as much as leveling up would do in DND
8:37 PM +Electromancer: So, in a sense, it’s like a side scrolling beat em up with upgrades, versus a 40 hour rpg where you start out with toothpicks and end with giant god slaying swords?
8:39 PM +Electromancer: Short, punchy, and meaningful without massive time investment is probably the better way to say what I was saying.
8:39 PM +Pat: yes thats a good description
8:40 PM ~Dan: How do the rodents travel through the rings?
8:41 PM +Pat: our rings of satturn are rocks some small some large enough for small parks the roddenst travel on trains between the established and stable rocks by air ship or on the backs of trained birds to the more distant or uncharted.
8:42 PM ~Dan: So there is an atmosphere in the rings?
8:43 PM +Pat: yes the humans have built teriforming system that brings normal gravity and atmosphere to the rings
8:43 PM +Pat: we debated this but thought even if it us unrealistic it will make for a more entertaining game
8:43 PM * ~Dan nods
8:44 PM ~Dan: You referred to this as a “fantasy/steampunk” setting. What are the fantasy aspects?
8:44 PM +Electromancer: I think steam punk rodents might be less realistic.
8:44 PM +Pat: fair
8:45 PM +Pat: the fantasy aspects are mostly the rings having atmospheer and gravity. no magic
8:45 PM +Electromancer: But I’m willing to suspend my disbelief so I can play as a steampunk squirrel rifleman.
8:45 PM +Pat: exactly our thought
8:47 PM +Electromancer: I think you hit the right amount of fantasy here. And you accidentally hit the ancient powerful machines of a long gone civilization trope, but made it so unique it feels fresh.
8:47 PM ~Dan: Can the rodents actually reach Saturn itself, and if so, what’s it like?
8:49 PM +Pat: they have not left the F rings yet. it is early in there civilization so they are just beginning to explore their environment. in the scope of the game Saturn is not covered but it may be where the humans left to
8:50 PM +Pat: the F rings are some of the most outter rings (we spent a lot of time on the NASA web site) so they have a long way to go
8:51 PM +Electromancer: I like how little story there is. This feels really cool. Light canon with the ability to make it up as you go. Is it meant to let you go wherever you want with the story?
8:52 PM +Pat: we want to make enough story to make it live without so much to cancel out the exploration. we were not making a combat game so we wanted to lessen the emphasis on that. it is staill a ttrpg so there is a combat element.
8:53 PM ~Dan: Speaking of which, how does combat work?
8:53 PM +Pat: yes have fun with it find a micro wormhole to titan get roughed up by street hoolagans whatever
8:55 PM +Electromancer: This is pretty exciting to think about. Some rpgs can be suffocating in how fleshed out everything is.
8:57 PM +Pat: each combatant has a armor level. roll the dice set by the GM (probably fight and build) and if you roll over the armor level you hit. each hit is one pep. NPCs are created on a dot system the more important they are the more dots they have. so minions only have one dot in pep and are taken out easly. main villans have 3 pep and are much more
8:57 PM +Pat: difficult to take out
8:58 PM +Electromancer: Does the game include death or do you go pokemon style and things just faint?
8:58 PM ~Dan: What effect do weapons have?
8:58 PM +Pat: turn order is by 1d6 highest first. many weapons have special effects that make them diffrent than eachother as they all to the same damage. stun waepons to soul damage instead
8:59 PM +Pat: shot guns and gernades cove areas. riffles can shoot further whups entangel revolvers holg 5 or 6 shots flame thrower are always awesome
9:00 PM +Pat: mm thats some extra bad spelling
9:02 PM ~Dan: Do you have rules for ship-to-ship combat?
9:02 PM +Electromancer: Shotguns* grenades* cover* rifles* whips* entangle* hold* flamethrowers* all fixed
9:02 PM +Pat: perfect thx
9:03 PM +Electromancer: Apologies if I come off as an asshole. I am, but I don’t always mean to be.
9:04 PM +Pat: the origial game did not but the Zine will carry those rules. they just cover overtaking and maneuvers as well as some ideas for weapons and gear a airship may have. and how to modify your airship
9:05 PM +Pat: not to worry you are good
9:06 PM ~Dan: 🙂
9:06 PM ~Dan: Does the game include a bestiary, and if so, how large?
9:06 PM +Pat: correction dose not bother me. i get the you write like a 3rd grader why are you trying to write games. that makes me grumppy
9:06 PM +Pat: it will there are about 20 critters in it
9:07 PM +Pat: mostly its for the naritive as the danger of an individual creature will be based on howmany dots it has in teh NPC scale
9:07 PM +Electromancer: Spellcheck exists to allow creativity not be hindered by spelling, so no worries man.
9:08 PM +Pat: 🙂
9:09 PM +Electromancer: I feel like this is something I could play with my wife. She can do dnd, but a quick fun game where you can play as squirrels sounds like it would be more exciting.
9:11 PM ~Dan: It’s about time for danhunsaker’s favorite question. You there, danhunsaker?
9:11 PM +Pat: that is the nitch we are trying to fill. We will leave the next DND or Rifts to others. we love casual gaming and want to help bring new people in
9:11 PM ~Dan: Guess not. Okay, I’ll ask it:
9:11 PM +Pat: 42
9:12 PM ~Dan: What is your LEAST favorite aspect of Brass Rings?
9:12 PM ~Dan: (lol re: 42)
9:13 PM +Electromancer: They can turn your finger green.
9:13 PM * ~Dan chuckles
9:14 PM +Pat: that the original system didnt work. i loved the idea of using the coins out of your pocket to just play. but the system was just too clunky and the coins rolled around too much and took away from the game too much and when a system takes over naritive we know we are in a bad place
9:14 PM +Pat: the original titale was just Steampunk Rodents btw
9:15 PM +Electromancer: Here’s the make or break question: do you like pho?
9:16 PM +Pat: I specilised in Asian cuizine when i went to cullinary school. I make my stock from beef bones
9:17 PM +Electromancer: Damn. Didn’t see that answer coming. Good answer.
9:17 PM ~Dan: Electromancer: Are you trying to discover if he’s friend or pho?
9:17 PM ~Dan: (Yeeeeees, I know that’s not how it’s pronounced…)
9:18 PM ~Dan: In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
9:18 PM +Electromancer: Well the last time I ate a person I got in trouble but to be fair the McDonald’s was like, 2 exits away
9:19 PM * ~Dan chuckles
9:19 PM +Pat: you probably did both of you a favor (McDonalds fries are the best)
9:24 PM ~Dan: Did you see my question, Pat? 🙂
9:24 PM +Pat: no but now i do
9:25 PM +Pat: we are currently running this game on Kickstarter. (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/530589675/brass-rings-a-game-of-steam-punk-rodents-on-saturns-rings)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/530589675/brass-rings-a-game-of-steam-punk-rodents-on-saturns-rings
9:25 PM +Electromancer: Anyone else keep seeing strange fuzz appearing on the screen? 😛
9:26 PM +Electromancer: Is your artist in house?
9:27 PM +Pat: the next game in line is Rock the Apocalypse it uses the the same system and is perty much Max meets the Blues Brothers
9:27 PM ~Dan: Cool. 🙂
9:27 PM ~Dan: Thanks very much for joining us, Pat! Please know that you’re always welcome to hang out with us here. 🙂
9:28 PM +Pat: we use mostly freelancers for art some of the art is done by Kota or myself the upcoming card game President Dragon is all inhouse art
9:28 PM +Electromancer: Nice. And yes
9:28 PM +Pat: i would love to come by some more thank you
9:28 PM ~Dan: Usual reminder: If you’ve enjoyed this Q&A and would like to treat me to a coffee or two, you can do so at (Link: https://www.ko-fi.com/gmshoe)https://www.ko-fi.com/gmshoe . Anything’s appreciated! 🙂
9:28 PM +Electromancer: This game sounds amazing.
9:28 PM ~Dan: If you’ll give me just a minute, I’ll get the log posted and link you
9:28 PM ~Dan: !
