8:01 PM +DiogoNogueira: Hi everyone. My name is Diogo Nogueira. I am a game creator from Brazil and my latest project on Kickstarter is Lost in the Fantasy World. I am the creator of Old Skull Publishing and have been publishing games for about 4 years.
8:02 PM +DiogoNogueira: Lost in the Fantasy World is a narrative driven game about kid and teens who were transported to a fantasy world and now are trying to get back home with the help of a mysterious Mentor and magical artifacts.
8:03 PM +DiogoNogueira: It’s a gamr about friendship, finding your true home and what it means to be a hero.
8:03 PM +DiogoNogueira: it is also a great game for new players getting into the hobby and for kids. I playtested it with kids of 4 an up.
8:04 PM +DiogoNogueira: And, as usual with my games, the book comes with a extensive toolkit to help generate characters, adventures, monster, and other resources for the game.
8:04 PM +DiogoNogueira: Done.
8:05 PM ~Dan: Thanks, DiogoNogueira! The floor is open to questions!
8:05 PM ~Dan: Can you give us an overview of the setting? And how whimsical is it?
8:06 PM +DiogoNogueira: Well, the setting is really more implied than firmly defined.
8:07 PM +DiogoNogueira: We do have a section that details some areas and give tables with possible adventure hooks. But we wanted to let it be more open ended.
8:08 PM +DiogoNogueira: I’ve played it with a setting based on Super Mario World, Adventure Time and the Classic D&D cartoon.
8:08 PM +DiogoNogueira: But you can make it as whimsical or even dark as you wish.
8:08 PM * ~Dan nods
8:09 PM +DiogoNogueira: Some of the source material is more mature than cartoons. 🙂
8:09 PM ~Dan: What are the “givens” in any setting, if any?
8:10 PM +GenoFoxx: how dangerous is said fantasy world? is as dangerous a Grimgar or RE:Zero or near harmless like Konosuba
8:10 PM +DiogoNogueira: By givens you mean what is established?
8:11 PM ~Dan: Yes. What things are true about any setting used for this game?
8:11 PM +DiogoNogueira: We have 10 locations, like a forest of dream like whispers. Elves, fairy queens. The possibility that dreams manifests in the fantasy land.
8:11 PM +DiogoNogueira: A evil shadow being. The Mentor (who is the GM is a character that guides them).
8:12 PM +DiogoNogueira: And that when they usually find a portal back home, they will also face a situation that will requirw their help.
8:12 PM ~Dan: (Howdy, Eric_E!)
8:12 PM +Eric_E: hiya
8:12 PM +DiogoNogueira: They are the heroes the world needs.
8:12 PM ~Dan: (Topic: (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gallantknightgames/lost-in-the-fantasy-world)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gallantknightgames/lost-in-the-fantasy-world )
8:13 PM ~Dan: So play continues even after the PCs return home?
8:13 PM +DiogoNogueira: As for how dangerous the world is, again that depends. When playing with 4 years old, it’s dangerous but not mortal. But when playing with adults, it can get pretty dark and even flirt with horror.
8:14 PM ~Dan: What is the age range for the PCs?
8:14 PM +DiogoNogueira: The book actually has a chapter that deals with this and talks about violence in the game and how to handle it.
8:15 PM +DiogoNogueira: Well, like the movie Hook, and Narnia, they can return to the Fantasy World. They can be called back.
8:16 PM +DiogoNogueira: Normally, the age is between 5 and 15 I would say. But in a campaign they can get older and keep coming back when needed.
8:16 PM +GenoFoxx: will there be time skips or it depends on the story?
8:17 PM +DiogoNogueira: It depends on the story, yes. But we have plans to release further products about this return and the ‘rediscovery’ of the Fantasy Land by adults for example.
8:17 PM ~Dan: What sorts of unusual abilities do the PCs have to help them survive in the Fantasy Land?
8:18 PM ~Dan: Or are they “just kids”?
8:18 PM +Eric_E: Sorry I’m late. Does it use Tinyd6?
8:18 PM +DiogoNogueira: They are kids from our world, with the amount of knowledge we now have (which is a lot), but they also receive magical artifacts given by the Mentor.
8:19 PM ~Dan: Right from the start?
8:20 PM ~Dan: Like the Dungeon Master in the D&D cartoon?
8:20 PM +DiogoNogueira: These artifacts are created by the players in a narrative way, like FATE. They can be weapons, armor, or other items, like lanterns, capes or even be mundane items that are imbued with power. Like a magic skate board.
8:20 PM +DiogoNogueira: Yes, like the D&D cartoon.
8:20 PM +Eric_E: (disregard my question, found the answer in an update)
8:21 PM +DiogoNogueira: Nope. It doesn’t use TinyD6, although it was an inspiration for the game.
8:21 PM +DiogoNogueira: It’s a minimalistic narrative system, that kinda feels like a minimalistic FATE.
8:22 PM ~Dan: To what degree does the GM, as the Mentor, directly help the PCs?
8:22 PM +DiogoNogueira: Everything has Traits. Each Trait adds 1 to the d6 roll, and you resolve action rolling a d6 versus the Mentor. Adding Traits and bonus for creative ideas.
8:23 PM +DiogoNogueira: Whoever win narrates what happens (so it does have some shared narrative).
8:23 PM +DiogoNogueira: The Mentor is merely a guide. They will impart information. Feed rumors.
8:24 PM +DiogoNogueira: Tell them about the world. The legends and potential locations of portals.
8:24 PM ~Dan: Is the Mentor physically present in the setting, again like the cartoon Dungeon Master?
8:24 PM +DiogoNogueira: It is really based on the DM from the cartoon (it was my favorite show on TV).
8:25 PM +DiogoNogueira: That’s the idea. Yes.
8:25 PM * ~Dan nods
8:25 PM +DiogoNogueira: They are like a link between the kids from the real world and the fantasy world.
8:26 PM ~Dan: The Mentor, you mean?
8:26 PM +DiogoNogueira: Yes.
8:27 PM ~Dan: Can the kids learn magic in the Fantasy Land?
8:28 PM +DiogoNogueira: They are normal kids, so they would need something to use magic with, like a spell book, a wand, a scroll. And that would basically give them a Trait to do so. So yeah.
8:29 PM ~Dan: What (if any) are the limits of magic spells in the setting?
8:29 PM +DiogoNogueira: There are rules to get and change your traits as you play. And Trait creation is really open ended.
8:30 PM +DiogoNogueira: As a minimalistic narrative game, there aren’t real limits. It will be how you write the Trait. And considering each Trait just gives you a +1, to do some really powerful stuff you would have to combine quite a few or get pretty lucky on the dice.
8:31 PM ~Dan: I see… Is there a character sheet that we can see? Or is it just a list of Traits?
8:31 PM +DiogoNogueira: It’s not really a competitive game, and the shared narrative nature of it would mean abuses would not be appropriate. Talking it out would.
8:32 PM +DiogoNogueira: Sure. Let me post it. It’s basically a list.
8:34 PM +DiogoNogueira: Hummm… I am having some trouble pasting images here…
8:35 PM +DiogoNogueira: Uploaded file: (Link: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/0ddf648abed7fba14168de522ac69fce/23E4247E-F8C4-40EC-8E8D-9F8612B78C08.jpeg)https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/0ddf648abed7fba14168de522ac69fce/23E4247E-F8C4-40EC-8E8D-9F8612B78C08.jpeg
8:35 PM +DiogoNogueira: Ok
8:35 PM ~Dan: Let me give that a look…
8:35 PM ~Dan: Heh. Yup, pretty minimalist! 🙂
8:36 PM ~Dan: And you said the Traits are player-created, correct?
8:36 PM +DiogoNogueira: I wanted a game small kids could eventually use to GM theirs first games
8:36 PM ~Dan: Sure! A noble goal, that.
8:36 PM +DiogoNogueira: Which happened too. And is good to play with the family.
8:37 PM +DiogoNogueira: And is a game that really tries to harness the imagination and creativity.
8:37 PM * ~Dan nods
8:40 PM ~Dan: (Did you see my question about the Traits?)
8:40 PM +DiogoNogueira: Saw now!
8:41 PM +DiogoNogueira: Okay. Players create their own Traits freely. But we do have some tables tomhelpmthe, if they lack inspiration or just want tombe surprised.
8:41 PM ~Dan: Surprised? So they can be randomly chosen?
8:41 PM +DiogoNogueira: But Mentors also create Traits for Opponents, locations, hazarda and other things.
8:42 PM +DiogoNogueira: Yes, you can roll on d66 tables to generate them.
8:43 PM ~Dan: Cool.
8:43 PM ~Dan: Hmm… So each Trait adds +1 to a roll, correct?
8:43 PM +DiogoNogueira: Uploaded file: (Link: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/d0276580e1904d9a7aa7d9fe2cdf233e/1B952C7D-9F86-43D9-A216-8B1F1BE6916A.jpeg)https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/d0276580e1904d9a7aa7d9fe2cdf233e/1B952C7D-9F86-43D9-A216-8B1F1BE6916A.jpeg
8:44 PM +DiogoNogueira: Exemple of table
8:44 PM +DiogoNogueira: Yes. Each Trait is a +1 and the game uses d6 to solve tests.
8:46 PM +Eric_E: Ok, neat table. I could easily see getting the Breakfast Club in D&D world
8:46 PM ~Dan: That being the case, how would you reflect someone who has “more” of a Trait than someone else? For example, how would you portray a Giant’s strength?
8:46 PM +DiogoNogueira: He could have more than one Trait that could reflect that “specialty”.
8:47 PM +DiogoNogueira: A giant might have Giant, Strong Arms, Hits Like a Truck
8:47 PM +DiogoNogueira: Or something similar.
8:47 PM ~Dan: I see.
8:47 PM +DiogoNogueira: So it would give him +3 to do something related to that.
8:48 PM ~Dan: (Howdy, tenkar! Welcome to #randomworlds!)
8:49 PM ~Dan: How does combat work?
8:49 PM ~Dan: (wb, Tenkar! 🙂 )
8:50 PM +DiogoNogueira: Using the same system. If you win you can disable a Trait from your enemy.
8:50 PM +Tenkar: Thank you
8:50 PM +DiogoNogueira: That usually has to do with the action that you take.
8:50 PM ~Dan: (Diogo, meet Erik Tenkar, founder of the RPG web page Tenkar’s Tavern. I told him about your game, and he expressed interest in posting about it on his page. 🙂 )
8:51 PM +DiogoNogueira: And if the Mentor wins, he chooses a Trait to temporarily disable from you.
8:51 PM +Tenkar: Diogo does good stuff 🙂
8:51 PM +DiogoNogueira: OMG! I was wondering if he was THE ERIK TENKAR!
8:51 PM ~Dan: Does that mean that all attacks do 1 “point” of damage?
8:51 PM ~Dan: Yup, that’s him. Nice to see that you’ve heard of each other. 🙂
8:52 PM +Tenkar: Heh. Guilty as charged
8:52 PM +DiogoNogueira: Hey!!! I follow your blog for years! Thanks for being interested in my game!
8:52 PM ~Dan: See? You never know who you’ll run into around here. 🙂
8:52 PM +DiogoNogueira: (Whe I went to NYC I wanted to meet him but I am too shy to ask).
8:52 PM +Tenkar: I’ve followed your work as well
8:53 PM +Tenkar: Dude! Ask next time. I’m retired 😉
8:53 PM +DiogoNogueira: So yes. Each attack does 1 damage. Tougher Opponets have more Traits. Weaker less.
8:53 PM ~Dan: (Howdy, Logomachist!)
8:54 PM ~Dan: What effects do weapons and armor have?
8:54 PM +DiogoNogueira: I will. I was kinda embarrassed. I don’t know if you would think I was a stalker fan or something lol
8:55 PM +DiogoNogueira: They will just have an effect if you make them one of your Traits. If you make them into an Artifact they will give you Advantage on your die (roll more dice and keep the best).
8:56 PM +Tenkar: We are all gamers. It is the bond that
8:56 PM +Tenkar: We all share
8:56 PM ~Dan: ^
8:56 PM ~Dan: Well said, sir.
8:57 PM ~Dan: So a weapon, as a Trait, improves your roll by 1… What does armor do as a Trait?
8:57 PM +DiogoNogueira: Indeed. Thank you! I hope there will be a next time! I was going again this year after Gen Con. But that’s not happening any more.
8:58 PM +DiogoNogueira: Improve your roll to avoid attacks by +1? Protect you from hazards with a +1? Or anyhing else you can justify using it to get a +1.
8:59 PM ~Dan: Gotcha.
8:59 PM +DiogoNogueira: It is really up to the players to justify how does that Trait helps them in a particular situation.
8:59 PM ~Dan: Sorry if you already covered this, but how many Traits do beginning characters get?
8:59 PM +DiogoNogueira: They have a Concept, which is a Trait they never lose, plus 4 more.
9:00 PM ~Dan: And they start with one Artifact?
9:00 PM +DiogoNogueira: And we suggest, talents and special skill (things they are good at), relationships with other characters, objects that are important to them, quotes…
9:00 PM +DiogoNogueira: and they also have the Artifact
9:01 PM ~Dan: And do all Artifacts give advantage on relevant rolls?
9:02 PM +DiogoNogueira: Yes. As the Trait, you have to explain what it does. Like a Winged Sword Artifact.
9:02 PM +DiogoNogueira: It would allow you to fly in the fiction. It would give you advantage to attacks.
9:03 PM +DiogoNogueira: If you used it to avoid falling in a chasm, it would give advantages too.
9:03 PM +DiogoNogueira: The players get to create what else they do.
9:04 PM +DiogoNogueira: Artifact have these “Pulpy” names.
9:04 PM +DiogoNogueira: but what they really do is created during the game in accordance to players’ imagination and creativity.
9:04 PM ~Dan: So let’s say hypothetically that a player wanted an Artifact that allows him to teleport anywhere at any time. Would that be acceptable, or would that be something that the Mentor would have to rein in?
9:05 PM ~Dan: (wb, Tenkar!)
9:06 PM +DiogoNogueira: They have to name the artifact. What would the name be?
9:06 PM ~Dan: The Staff of Anywhere.
9:06 PM +DiogoNogueira: And then the player and Mentor would need to agree on how that works.
9:07 PM +DiogoNogueira: they certainly cannot use it to escape the fantasy world
9:07 PM +DiogoNogueira: Or that would make the game pointless.
9:07 PM +DiogoNogueira: They can make tests to teleport with advantage.
9:07 PM +DiogoNogueira: Put as I saif, everything can have Traits.
9:07 PM +DiogoNogueira: Even places .
9:08 PM +DiogoNogueira: So that would be a roll.
9:08 PM +DiogoNogueira: They can get into trouble with that too if they are careless.
9:09 PM ~Dan: I see… So to use your previous example of the winged sword, would the player have to roll (with advantage) to be able to fly?
9:10 PM +DiogoNogueira: If they are trying to achieve something of significant impact, yes. Especially against something with Traits, like a deep chasm.
9:10 PM +DiogoNogueira: Basically to overcome Obstacles.
9:11 PM +DiogoNogueira: To fly from on side of the room to another, probably not. The same way with the teleport.
9:11 PM +DiogoNogueira: Imagine like the Prestos wizard hat.
9:11 PM ~Dan: Hmm… Speaking of a deep chasm, you said that damage only disables one Trait. Does that apply even if the PC falls down such a chasm?
9:14 PM +DiogoNogueira: Yes. It’s an heroic game, mainly inspired by a cartoon. So yes. Lose one Trait. But each failure lose one. They could fall a little, lose one Trait, try again, lose another and keep going.
9:15 PM ~Dan: I see… What happens if a PC runs out of Traits? Are they dead or knocked out? Or does it depend upon the kind of game you’re running?
9:18 PM +DiogoNogueira: Yep, depends on the type. Again, on the Mentor’s part of the book, we talk about this. About character death, how to do it, when not to and so on. I don’t do it with small kids, but I’ve had character deaths with 12 year olds.
9:18 PM * ~Dan nods
9:19 PM ~Dan: Does the game include a bestiary?
9:19 PM +DiogoNogueira: A small one, and tables to create more.
9:20 PM +DiogoNogueira: Opponents are basically made with Traits. So it’s pretty easy to make them.
9:20 PM ~Dan: I would think so, yes.
9:21 PM ~Dan: Who did you say the “Big Bad Guy” is, again?
9:21 PM +DiogoNogueira: Yeah, I like to make games that are easy for the GM to create stuff on the flynifmneeded.
9:23 PM +DiogoNogueira: There are the Shadow Elves, Living Nightmares, Evil in the Shadow
9:23 PM +DiogoNogueira: But it’s not determined a specifi Big Bad
9:24 PM ~Dan: Ah, I must have misunderstood you earlier.
9:24 PM ~Dan: (Welcome to #randomworlds, Kieran_of_the_dark_peaks!)
9:24 PM +Kieran_of_the_dark_peaks: HI Dan, how are you doing?
9:25 PM +Kieran_of_the_dark_peaks: We chatted via e-mail yesterday?
9:25 PM ~Dan: (Good, thanks! Running a Q&A at the moment in here. I’ll open up a side chat with you. 🙂 )
9:27 PM ~Dan: Before I ask the next question, let me see if said question’s creator is paying attention. You there, danhunsaker? 🙂
9:27 PM +danhunsaker: Hardly.
9:27 PM ~Dan: ( Kieran_of_the_dark_peaks, do you see my private message on your end?)
9:27 PM +DiogoNogueira: Lol, okay.
9:27 PM ~Dan: danhunsaker: I know it’s a bit early, but do you want to do the honors? 🙂
9:28 PM +danhunsaker: Ah, early this time, is it? Very well.
9:29 PM +danhunsaker: I like to ask this question because it can really drive conversation by bringing up things that might not otherwise be discussed. What is your LEAST favorite part of LitFW?
9:29 PM +DiogoNogueira: That’s a thinker…
9:30 PM +danhunsaker: That’s the other reason I like it. 🙂
9:30 PM ~Dan: Isn’t it? 🙂
9:31 PM +DiogoNogueira: I think it’s the lack of a Map of the Fantasy World? Like as I always wanted a Map of the D&D cartoon map.
9:31 PM +DiogoNogueira: That’s the first thing that popped in my mind at least.
9:32 PM +danhunsaker: Sounds like a good stretch goal. 😉
9:32 PM ~Dan: It does!
9:32 PM +DiogoNogueira: It’s really one of my newest game so it’s kind in that ‘pure passion’ phase yet lol
9:32 PM +DiogoNogueira: Oh, I am doing Map pamphlets for it!
9:33 PM +DiogoNogueira: So far I made 2!
9:33 PM ~Dan: Excellent. 🙂
9:34 PM ~Dan: (brb)
9:35 PM +DiogoNogueira: Uploaded file: (Link: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/66ea2d9331adf359ed73ec2865910f00/51DCD708-F9BA-4B6F-855E-3F8FC05E37CC.jpeg)https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/66ea2d9331adf359ed73ec2865910f00/51DCD708-F9BA-4B6F-855E-3F8FC05E37CC.jpeg
9:36 PM +danhunsaker: So how much of the setting have you already discussed?

9:36 PM +DiogoNogueira: The map pamphlet
9:36 PM +danhunsaker: I could read back through and find out, but it’d probably take what’s left of the Q&A time. 😀
9:36 PM +danhunsaker: Very nice.
9:37 PM ~Dan: (back)
9:38 PM +DiogoNogueira: The setting is more implied than detailed. We detail 10 locations and provide generators to create more.
9:38 PM ~Dan: danhunsaker: We started late this evening, so you have plenty of time. 🙂
9:39 PM +DiogoNogueira: The idea is that you can play in any Fantasy World. Be it based on super mario, adventure time or narnia.
9:39 PM +danhunsaker: Hard to do a map of an implied world, I’d imagine.
9:40 PM +DiogoNogueira: Well, we could make a map of the detailed locations.
9:40 PM +DiogoNogueira: A small region of the bigger world.
9:41 PM ~Dan: Is this the start of a new game line, do you think, or is it more of a one-off?
9:42 PM +DiogoNogueira: Well, kinda. I am working on Mutant Animals Against Evil with a system that is based on that with just a bit more detail.
9:43 PM +DiogoNogueira: Inspired by a beloved group of ninja shelled reptiles…
9:43 PM ~Dan: Ah, that sounds promising!
9:44 PM ~Dan: What sorts of details do you plan on adding?
9:44 PM +DiogoNogueira: Possibility of more than 1 point of damage.
9:44 PM +danhunsaker: Adolescent Anthropomorphic Aikido Animals?
9:45 PM +DiogoNogueira: more detailed results (yes, yes and, yes but, no, no but, no and…)
9:45 PM ~Dan: I see. Cool.
9:46 PM ~Dan: In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
9:47 PM +danhunsaker: (This 15 minute mark is generally where I’d ask my signature question.)
9:48 PM +DiogoNogueira: Well, we have two nice things going on in the Kickstarter.
9:48 PM +DiogoNogueira: First we have a pledge level with reduced price for anyone who is in a financial hurdle to get the PDF for 5 dollars only.
9:49 PM +DiogoNogueira: And we have a Backer Level that allows you to help us donate print copies of the game to schools, libraries, conventions and other venues.
9:49 PM ~Dan: That’s very kind of you!
9:49 PM ~Dan: On both counts!
9:50 PM +danhunsaker: I love community contribution tiers.
9:50 PM +DiogoNogueira: Allowing people that wouldn’t have access to it to be able to read and play the game.
9:50 PM ~Dan: You know, I know of a fellow who runs a charity that offers RPG opportunities to poor and challenged kids. Maybe I should put you in touch?
9:50 PM +DiogoNogueira: We are donating mire than 100 books already!
9:51 PM +DiogoNogueira: Sure. That would be great!
9:51 PM ~Dan: He basically as a trailer that travels from place to place, providing kids a place to game.
9:51 PM +danhunsaker: That’s because people tend to be awesome when they can afford to.
9:51 PM +danhunsaker: Like a bookmobile.
9:51 PM +DiogoNogueira: The game really helped on public schools here in Brazil. So I wanted to do something like this in the KS.

9:53 PM +DiogoNogueira: Cool, checking it out!
9:54 PM ~Dan: Great! The guy’s really cool.
9:54 PM +DiogoNogueira: Of course!
9:54 PM ~Dan: Also, huge.
9:54 PM ~Dan: Thanks very much for joining us, DiogoNogueira!
9:54 PM +DiogoNogueira: Thank you for having me again Dan!
9:55 PM +DiogoNogueira: It’s always fun!
9:55 PM ~Dan: Certainly! You’re always welcome. 🙂
9:55 PM ~Dan: If you’ll give me just a minute, I’ll get the log posted and link you. 🙂
