<+Shawn> Greetings all. I’m Shawn. I’m a gamer, writer, dabbler in arts, and software tester. I wanted let you know about one of the kickstarters I am doing as part of Zine Quest 2, Akmei’s Spellbook https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/spconlin/akmeis-spellbook?ref=Randomworlds. The zine will be a collection of spells for D&D 5e based on the antics of
<+Shawn> classic cartoon characters. If you have ever wanted to allow a character to create a doorway through which your enemies can’t follow you or to walk across a gap between cliffs so long as they don’t look down then this is the spellbook you’ve been waiting for.
<+danhunsaker> Thanks, Shawn! The floor is now open to questions!
<+danhunsaker> Where’d you get the idea for this?
<+Shawn> It came out of one my regular games. I had a party making their way through Chult the was rather silly in their approach. They were dubbed the Misfits of Distraction by the third session. As the campaign continued they started getting more cartoonish and I jokingly commented that one of them held up a sign before falling off a cliff after being hit
<+Shawn> with the Thunderwave.
<+danhunsaker> I take it they just sorta rolled with that from then out?
<+Shawn> After that we cited a need for some light-hearted, yet useful spells and the Archmage Akmei (ACME) was born to invent them
<+danhunsaker> Do we get any of Akmei’s backstory in the zine? Or is this just a spellbook?
<+Shawn> Pretty much. The idea has been brewing for about 6 months or so and when I learned about Zine Quest 2 I decided the spellbook would be a good option for a zine.
<+Shawn> I was originally planning just the spells but I started piecing together a bit more story for the mage when I created the Kickstarter. I’m currently thinking there will be at least a short backstory for him in the finished product.
<+danhunsaker> I always like those small touches. 🙂
<+danhunsaker> Are the spells tied to specific classes?
<+Shawn> I like to have a little more story available to help things blend. Currently, I have created them specifically with wizard’s in mind, but there will likely be some that are appropriate for other classes as well. One of the stretch goals on the Zine is the creation of new Warlock Patron with Pacts.
<+Shawn> The patron being The Illustrati (a race of powerful two dimensional beings from another plane)
<+danhunsaker> What can you tell us about the spells themselves?
<+Shawn> I am making an effort to keep them balanced per level and potential use which is a challenge given the source material, but I want them to be more than just a gag. An example of a spell I have completed is Cantankerous Ally which is a 3rd level illusion. It allows the caster to create an illusionary Dwarf with a bushy mustache and a foul mouth
<+Shawn> that distracts all enemies within 15 ft. allow companions to gain advantage on attacks and prevent reactions from the effected enemies.
<+danhunsaker> (wb, Dan!)
<+Shawn> A similar spell is Summon Rooster, only this one actually causes a giant talking chicken to come and fight beside the party while it insults the enemies and repeats itself.
<+danhunsaker> “Now what, I say, what do you think you’re doing here?”
<+Shawn> 🙂 “That’s no way to attack, son. Here let me show you…”
<~Dan> (Give me just a couple of minutes to get caught up.
<+GenoFoxx> wb Dan
<+Shawn> WB Dna
<+Shawn> A spell that I’m still formulating that might be good for an Arcane Trickster is Clever Counting, an enchantment that makes the effected think counting “One for you and one for me. Two for you and one, two for me.” seem perfectly reasonable.
<~Dan> (danhunsaker: Do you mind keeping point on this one, I’m kind of dealing with some stuff on my end at the moment.)
<~Dan> (I appreciate it!)
<+danhunsaker> So is it just you writing these, then?
<+danhunsaker> The KS page implies coauthors.
<+Shawn> Yes, I am currently the only author on the Zine, but I am bouncing ideas with some of players and friends.
<~Dan> (brb — need to restart)
<+danhunsaker> One of the rewards is a 3D printed token?
<+Shawn> I don’t like taking all of the credit for work even if I do most of the writing since I wouldn’t be able to do it without the input I get from others.
<&Beelzework> jeebus..finally going home.
<+Shawn> I was trying to think of unique rewards for those that might want to chip in at higher levels and decided it might be nice to put my printer to work. My first idea is a small spellbook token that has a small compartment in the pages.
<+Shawn> I’ve also considered small potion bottles and other wizard themed items and I’m planning to have a poll to see what the supporters at those levels would like most. Since I am going to be printing them myself, I have some flexibility.
<+danhunsaker> And the first stretch goal involves creating 5 of these. Is that 5 more designs, or 5 total?
<+Shawn> Actually, the first stretch goal is aimed at creation artifacts to be described in the Zine for game use but turning those into physical tokens isn’t a bad idea.
<+danhunsaker> *facepalms* I knew that. Misread it the second pass.
<+danhunsaker> I just glanced at the project FAQs. Is that an actual frequent question? 😀
<+Shawn> To be honest, I haven’t gotten any questions but I thought that one might come up. It’s entirely possible that I’ve headed off a number of emails by posting it early.
<+danhunsaker> Well, it got a chuckle out of me, at least. 🙂
<+Shawn> That was my hope. It seemed to help set the tone for the project
<+danhunsaker> OK, so I have to ask. What’s your least favorite thing about Akmei’s Spellbook?
<+Shawn> My least favorite thing about this project is is having to be ready for backlash from those who take things a little too serious. I can appreciate wanting to have a gritty game but I believe there is a place for pure fun as well. It’s just depressing to be accused of “ruining” or “disrespecting” the game because of a fun project.
<+Shawn> I am pleased to say, however, that those responses have been minimal so far.
<+danhunsaker> It’s always frustrating facing folks who have a “one true way” mentality about hobbies.
<+danhunsaker> (wb again, Dan!)
<+danhunsaker> What’s next for you, Shawn?
<+Shawn> I have a few projects on my plate right now. In addition to Akmei’s Spellbook, I am also contributing to The Necronomizine kickstarter. Once both of these are complete, I’m planning to get back to work on some modules I’ve had in the works for about a year.
<+Shawn> Those are mostly one-shots that will be available on DMs Guild once their done.
<+danhunsaker> Anything else you want to bring up in the time we have left?
<+Shawn> I’d like to thank you again for having me here to talk about the project and thank everyone who was here or reads the transcript. Please consider sponsoring this zine or if it isn’t your thing please share the link with someone who might be interested. We have 7 days left to fund and we are getting quite close.

<+danhunsaker> Thanks for joining us, Shawn!
<+danhunsaker> As always, tips are welcome at https://www.ko-fi.com/gmshoe – anything’s appreciated! 🙂
<+Shawn> It was my pleasure.
<+danhunsaker> Now I’ll just get this log copied and sent to Dan so he can post it and get you the link!
