<+fzanca> A little about me. I am an award-winning screenwriter, novelist and board game designer living in Los Angeles. I also line produce film and tv projects
<+fzanca> I have been creating the universe of a sci-fi IP called Destiny Aurora for the past 5 years
<+fzanca> 4 years ago, the first novel was released and started working on a board game that would allow players to dogfight in space while their away team was attempting a complete a mission on the planet surface
<+fzanca> it’s done very well and I’m currently working on the expansion.
<+fzanca> I’ve since wrote 2 more novels and just finished the graphic novel
<+fzanca> the 4th novel will be ready for print in a few months
<+fzanca> the fans asked me to do an RPG and after speaking with Paizo, I decided to use their open source and make it part of Starfinder
<+fzanca> the Kickstarter is running right now and we hit our goal on the first day
<+fzanca> Here is the link – (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1169263915/destiny-aurora-starfinder-sci-fi-rpg)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1169263915/destiny-aurora-starfinder-sci-fi-rpg
<+fzanca> The book includes new races, the galaxy of planets and where they lie in relation to the others, a new reputation system, creature, scenarios and more
<+fzanca> okay, now I’m done
<~Dan> Thanks, fzanca! The floor is open to questions!
<~Dan> What makes this setting unique?
<+fzanca> The universe is split into lawful and unlawful space.
<+fzanca> There is a Coalition of Planets where players can choose to be space peacekeepers or be a part of the criminal organization called the Dreggs
<+fzanca> Then there is a third faction that kind of walk the line, called Renegades – but they’re mostly in it for the money
<~Dan> (Howdy, Wyrmling!)
<+fzanca> The books revolve around an ex-Secret Service agent named Jayce Carver, whose Senatorial wife was assassinated while he was tasked with protecting her.
<+fzanca> He went into a downward spiral and lost his job. His friend asked him to work with him as Coalition Inspector and said he could try to find the assassin as part of his duties
<+fzanca> He took a lot of risks and was a bit ruthless, so no crew wanted to be paired with him. So his crew is made up of the undesirables.
<~Dan> (Welcome to #randomworlds, faradius!)
<~Dan> (Here for the Q&A, or just a general visit? 🙂 )
<+fzanca> Which I wanted to do for the RPG and allow people to build their own eclectic crews and have fun bouncing off different personalities
<+faradius> general visit
<~Dan> How would you describe the tech level of the setting?
<+fzanca> Ships are warp capable and shielding. People communicate through holographic images. Vehicles hover. So, the normal tropes
<+fzanca> I created device that goes on the back of gloves, called a Gauntlink, that has a miniature holographic device in it
<~Dan> Is there magic in this setting?
<+fzanca> Not in my setting, though the prince and princess of Visarath have specific elemental capabilities, but since we are joining it with the Starfinder universe, your characters can use magic
<~Dan> So it’s meant to be a region of the Starfinder universe?
<+fzanca> It can be or it can played separately, it’s completely up to the players
<~Dan> I see.
<~Dan> What about psionics?
<+fzanca> Of course the novels don’t include any portion of Starfinder
<~Dan> Do psionics exist?
<+fzanca> Not in the novels at this point, but they exist in the universe
<~Dan> Are there rules for them in the rulebook?
<+fzanca> I don’t have any races that psionic specific
<+fzanca> I believe they are in the core starfinder rule book
<~Dan> Ah, I see.
<~Dan> Speaking of races, what are the ones unique to this setting?
<+fzanca> Reynian (tiger type race), Visarath (gold-skinned), Zurathi (lion type), Ikarrian (nano wings), Caltoran (dwarf type with orc like teeth), Lamberdarian (aquatic)
<+fzanca> and we just added Kraysorian through the stretch goal (scaled skin)
<~Dan> To what degree do these species intermingle?
<+fzanca> We are hoping we reach a stretch goal where you can combine species
<+fzanca> quite a bit
<+fzanca> The Coalition worlds have assemblies
<+fzanca> there’s also Dracaanian, which are harder to trope
<+fzanca> Uploaded file: (Link: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/4f437f7848135be5d9fd69bf0af9b96a/Kunlore%20Thorne%20COLOR-small.jpg)https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/4f437f7848135be5d9fd69bf0af9b96a/Kunlore%20Thorne%20COLOR-small.jpg
<+fzanca> more demon-looking I guess
<~Dan> Indeed so!
<+fzanca> Also I helped produce Star Trek Renegades
<~Dan> What’s their story?
<~Dan> (Howdy, WonderRat!)
<+fzanca> So my ships were designed by Star Trek guys
<+WonderRat> (Hi, Dan)
<~Dan> Oh, that’s cool!
<+fzanca> Dracaanians don’t travel in packs, but tend to take control of other groups. They tend to leave their home planet, make money and then come back to retire
<~Dan> (Howdy, Silver-afk!)
<+fzanca> The assassin that killed Jayce’s wife was Dracaanian
<~Dan> Are they generally the Bad Guys?
<+fzanca> Uploaded file: (Link: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/399511d1fdbea713e8aa77c242906bb3/card%202b%20Rovana_Revision%20eyes%20and%20Hair%202-small.jpg)https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/399511d1fdbea713e8aa77c242906bb3/card%202b%20Rovana_Revision%20eyes%20and%20Hair%202-small.jpg
<+fzanca> Rovanna is a hybrid, a birth defect caused her to be split down the middle
<+fzanca> as far as Dracaanians go, they can be good, but I haven’t seen one yet. LOL. Dracaania isn’t a Coalition planet either
<~Dan> Speaking of Bad Guys, do you have any obvious ones in this setting, or is it not black-and-white enough for that?
<+fzanca> Uploaded file: (Link: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/541b1fb4742a8bdea1f8934fa54b7e40/Renegade%20Cruiser%20-%20Color-smal.jpg)https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/541b1fb4742a8bdea1f8934fa54b7e40/Renegade%20Cruiser%20-%20Color-smal.jpg
<+fzanca> Here’s an example of one of the ships
<+fzanca> Not really, even my bad guys think they’re good guys
<+fzanca> The main bad guy in the second and third book is a tactical genius, so Jayce is always one step behind.
<+fzanca> His name is So’len Frae and he’s a Zurathi who was exiled with his followers after failing in their attack against the Earth
<+fzanca> Uploaded file: (Link: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/81b4074613e3d3f277f877d3ae3bcf5b/Villain%20-%20So’len%20Frae-small.jpg)https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/81b4074613e3d3f277f877d3ae3bcf5b/Villain%20-%20So’len%20Frae-small.jpg
<+fzanca> The head of the Dreggs, – there’s really no redeemable quality to him
<+fzanca> he just likes to cause as much mayhem as possible.
<~Dan> Do you introduce any new classes?
<+fzanca> Yes, I wanted players to be actual crew members, so we added a communications and a medic class
<~Dan> Do you include a bestiary?
<+fzanca> Yep, there’s 10 new creatures, 11 if we hit the next stretch goal
<~Dan> How many different planets does the rulebook cover?
<+fzanca> There’s both animals, like Fen-Griffins and Arachno-Demons and mechanical like Iron Dragons and Sentinels
<+fzanca> 10 new planets
<+fzanca> so quite a bit
<~Dan> Do you use the Star Wars trope of one-environment planets, or are they more diverse?
<+fzanca> to some degree. Renyia is a jungle/forest planet. Kraysor and Lamberdar are 90% water but have islands
<+fzanca> Ikarria and Caltor’s planets were scorched by their suns
<+fzanca> one race went underground while the other went into the air
<~Dan> back, sorry
<~Dan> What is starship combat like in this setting?
<+fzanca> We use the Starfinder rules for starship combat. But there are 5 roles – Commander (could be an Inspector or a Captain), Pilot, Weapons officer, Communications and Engineer
<+fzanca> Uploaded file: (Link: https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/127ca05ce5a909b896aee4fa8e9959c1/bridge01-with%20station%20names.jpg)https://uploads.kiwiirc.com/files/127ca05ce5a909b896aee4fa8e9959c1/bridge01-with%20station%20names.jpg
<+fzanca> sample bridge
<+fzanca> the holographic projector is in the ceiling
<~Dan> Well, let me rephrase: How cinematic is combat? Is it space dog-fighting like Star Wars?
<+fzanca> Yes, but it’s based on a series of turns and each crewmember has turns to complete tasks
<+fzanca> so I guess in that sense it’s more like Star Trek
<~Dan> So more focused around capital ships?
<+fzanca> There are 3 stages of ships – Fighters, Cruisers and Dreadnoughts
<+fzanca> as you grow in level, you can increase the size of your ship
<~Dan> Huh. That’s interesting.
<~Dan> So if everyone’s limited to a fighter at low levels, are PCs unable to travel together in one ship with one of them piloting?
<+fzanca> You start out with a cruiser, you can grow into a dreadnought and add fighters to your ships depending on the space you have available in your hold.
<+fzanca> Just answered that
<+fzanca> So I built 3 ships for each faction
<~Dan> Ah, gotcha.
<+fzanca> so my book comes with 9 ship designs and Starfinder comes with there’s as well
<~Dan> I notice several melee weapons among the characters in your sample art. What part do melee weapons play in combat in this setting?
<+fzanca> In my board game you’re given a cruiser and you build your crew of 5. During each mission you choose your away team and the rest remain on the ship, but your ship only runs as well as the crew you have on it, so if your medic is running weapons, you’re going to miss a lot
<+fzanca> Well, weapons run out charge
<+fzanca> so it’s always good to have a back up
<+fzanca> there are 2 different types of swords, an axe and other blades
<+fzanca> Not to mention if you’re trying to stealth into a building, you probably want to the shooting to a minimum
<~Dan> Makes sense.
<~Dan> Hmm… danhunsaker, are you around?
<~Dan> danhunsaker has a question he always likes to ask. If he doesn’t respond, I’ll ask it for him. 🙂
<~Dan> Okay, looks like he’s not.
<~Dan> The question is: What is your LEAST favorite part of this product?
<+fzanca> I hired writers for the RPG since I don’t play myself. So I wish I knew more, but I’m learning
<~Dan> Really? That’s interesting…
<~Dan> So you had the game built around your setting without being familiar with RPGs yourself?
<+danhunsaker> Literally just got back home. 😀
<+fzanca> I’m familar with RPG’s but not specifically Starfinder
<+fzanca> So I relied on other people
<~Dan> Ah, gotcha.
<+fzanca> I’m a board game designer mostly
<~Dan> Howdy, danhunsaker!
<~Dan> Were there any particular problems in getting your setting to fit the Starfinder mold?
<+fzanca> no, not at all
<+fzanca> I found out what the parameters were before we started
<+fzanca> I knew it would fit
<+fzanca> I knew we would have to make tweaks, like the various crew members needed to run my ships, but that was it
<~Dan> (Howdy, Blarghedy!)
<~Dan> That’s good to hear. I always hate it when a setting has to bend to fit the rules its using.
<~Dan> Is this your first RPG for publication?
<+fzanca> yes, it is
<+fzanca> but i got some good people writing and holding my hand
* ~Dan nods
<+fzanca> blaine bass and kim frandsen specifically
<~Dan> Did anything surprise you about the process?
<+fzanca> It was more building the team
<+fzanca> the first writer I got fell off the face of the earth and Blaine to had fix some things they he’d written
<+fzanca> but once you find your team things fall into place pretty quickly
<+fzanca> I had never gotten a quote on a hardcover before
<~Dan> How did you find the people to put on your team?
<+fzanca> I was surprised about the huge difference in price
<+fzanca> Starfinder groups
<+fzanca> If they’re players as well as writers, it’s even better
<~Dan> Ah, that makes sense.
<+fzanca> I’m glad we hit the stretch goal to make the book a hard cover, that’s what I wanted
<~Dan> That’s always nice.
<+fzanca> I was surprised that Ninja Division completely dropped the ball on the figures
<+fzanca> So in the campaign we doing a lot of figure sales
<~Dan> Figure sales? I’m not sure I follow you there.
<+fzanca> people are purchasing the Destiny Aurora figures to use in their RPG play
<~Dan> Oh! Duh. Sorry. I completely misread what you typed.
<~Dan> I was thinking “figures” as in “numbers”.
<+fzanca> figures as in miniatures lol
<~Dan> Yeah, I’m with you now. 😀
<~Dan> In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
<+fzanca> There’s a destiny horizons group in case anyone has any questions about anything
<+fzanca> (Link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1125282850918455/)https://www.facebook.com/groups/1125282850918455/
<+fzanca> If anyone knows any reviewers, bloggers or article writers let me know. I still have a few media copies left
<+danhunsaker> Dan’s a reviewer!
<~Dan> I am, but I’m not familiar with Starfinder, unfortunately.
<+danhunsaker> Not sure how full his plate is at the moment, though.
<+danhunsaker> That too.
<+fzanca> Also moving into the future I will be staring my foray into the Fantasy genre
<~Dan> Otherwise, I’d be glad to add it to the queue.
<~Dan> Oh? What will that be?
<+fzanca> I’m still working on it, but I’m going to begin my first book after I complete the 4th Aurora book
<+fzanca> then I’ll be adapting that to my board game
<~Dan> What system will it use?
<+fzanca> so instead of ships you’ll have dragon riders, etc
<+fzanca> I’ll be reskinning the Destiny Aurora game
<~Dan> Usual reminder to folks: If you’ve enjoyed this Q&A and would like to treat me to a coffee or two, you can do so at (Link: https://www.ko-fi.com/gmshoe)https://www.ko-fi.com/gmshoe . Anything’s appreciated!
<~Dan> Thanks very much for joining us, fzanca!
<+fzanca> thank you everyone. Have a great night
<~Dan> If you’ll give me just a minute, I’ll get the log posted and link you. 🙂
