May 16 20:29:17 <+RobertBuckey> Alrighty then. Hey everyone, my name is Robert Buckey. I live in Arizona. I currently work as a licensed broker for a brokerage on the overnight shift, been doing that for a couple of years now. Prior to that, I did private security for about 9 years, and was in the Marine Corps for 8 years before that. Graduated from ASU, studied business and economics.
May 16 20:30:52 <+RobertBuckey> My game is Sagas and Six-Guns, working with Gallant Knight Games. It uses the Savage Worlds system. Sagas and Six-Guns is a mashup of the Old West and the Sagas and legends of the Norse. Viking/Cowboy roleplaying.
May 16 20:31:09 <+RobertBuckey> Done
May 16 20:31:36 <~Dan> Thanks, RobertBuckey! The floor is open to questions!
May 16 20:32:00 <~Dan> Where did you get this very outside-the-box idea? 🙂
May 16 20:34:08 <+RobertBuckey> Well, I was driving to work one day, which is about a 45 minute trip. I was listening to Amon Amarth, which is a Swedish death metal band which themes all of its music off of Norse mythology, and Volbeat’s western themed album, The Outlaw Gentlemen and the Shady ladies (love that title), and the idea just hit me that combining the two would be really cool.
May 16 20:34:27 <~Dan> Fair enough. 🙂
May 16 20:34:36 <~Dan> Oh, before I forget: Thank you for your service!
May 16 20:34:41 <+RobertBuckey> Thanks.
May 16 20:35:00 <~Dan> Can you give us a high-level overview of the setting?
May 16 20:38:09 <+RobertBuckey> Sure. Well, it’s not an “alternate history” setting. It isn’t North America. It’s a different world altogether. The setting focuses on a region simply called “The West”, or “Midgard West”, which is geographically similar to the Western US. Midgard West is home to five kingdoms, plus a lawless frontier region, and a mineral rich mountain region-
May 16 20:39:27 <+RobertBuckey> -controlled by a mining syndicate. The west is filled with everything from mundane threats such as outlaws and cattle rustlers, to beasts from Norse legend, from Jotun to trolls.
May 16 20:39:46 <~Dan> Does it look more Western or more Norse?
May 16 20:41:52 <+RobertBuckey> More western, as technology is on par with mid to late 19th century America. That being said, there is definite Norse influence. Picture a typical old west town, but the signs are all written with the old Runic alphabet. Cowboys sit in the saloon, playing poker, holding poker cards in one hand, and a drinking horn full of mead in the other.
May 16 20:42:12 <~Dan> Heh. Cool. 🙂
May 16 20:42:47 <+GenoFoxx> what’s the mythology?
May 16 20:43:21 <+GenoFoxx> are there other races?
May 16 20:43:45 <+GenoFoxx> take the two and reverse them
May 16 20:44:30 <+RobertBuckey> It matches Norse mythology for the most part. Same gods. Our artist, Alan, did a great picture of the Norse pantheon, depicting the Norse gods posing in period clothing in an old timey photograph.
May 16 20:46:26 <~Dan> (Okay, gotta run. Over to you, GenoFoxx! Thanks again!)
May 16 20:46:34 <+RobertBuckey> The only other playable race are the Sigruni, which are a group of Valkyries who found themselves trapped on Midgard due to the machinations of a mysterious stranger. They start the game as better fighters, and are physically stronger, but they are socially and technologically awkward.
May 16 20:46:43 <+RobertBuckey> Later Dan!
May 16 20:46:55 * Dan has quit (Disintegrated: ~ Trillian Astra – http://www.trillian.im ~)
May 16 20:47:25 <+RobertBuckey> One of the pre generated characters, a Sigruni called Rota the Red Axe, has been a favorite with everyone who has played so far.
May 16 20:48:12 <+GenoFoxx> no inspiration from Red Sonja 😉
May 16 20:48:44 <+RobertBuckey> Lol, I hadn’t even thought of that. The Sigruni were actually my wife’s idea.
May 16 20:50:21 <+RobertBuckey> Any other questions?
May 16 20:50:33 <+GenoFoxx> Since it’s a Savage World joint, what modifications have you made to the system to accomodate your setting?
May 16 20:53:36 <+RobertBuckey> A little. Obviously there are setting specific Hindrances and Edges. There are several Arcane Backgrounds, which were tailored to this system. There are three setting specific rules, one for “pistol holmgangs”, or dueling, representing the classic western gunfight. The second rule is for your Saga, and rules to represent your personal Saga increases, and-
May 16 20:54:44 <+RobertBuckey> -the benefits your increasing Saga has for your character. The third is to represent “ring giving”, the act of gathering warriors to your banner.
May 16 20:56:10 <+GenoFoxx> Is there a central big bad to your setting?
May 16 20:59:48 <+RobertBuckey> Kind of. There is a major railroad company called the Nine Worlds Carrier Corporation, headed by a “Rail Jarl” which can certainly fill that role, and does to a point in the Plot Point Campaign. And being Norse mythology, we have our old friend Loki causing all manner of trouble.
May 16 21:01:06 * Lassek has quit (Broken pipe)
May 16 21:02:11 <+GenoFoxx> going back to the ‘ring giving’ system how does that work?…how do you gather warriors to your banner?
May 16 21:06:01 <+RobertBuckey> Sure. So this is essentially inspired from Beowulf, when King Hrothgar meets Beowulf and his men in his mead hall, and hands out gifts to them. This basically represents your heroes throwing a party in a saloon, handing out gifts to their followers, and inspiring them for the upcoming quest or battle.
May 16 21:06:21 * Kei (~Kei_Kenob@MagicStar-C7A91EB2.hsd1.ca.comcast.net) has joined #randomworlds
May 16 21:06:21 * ChanServ gives voice to Kei
May 16 21:06:55 <+RobertBuckey> Mechanically, it’s a performance roll, with bonuses based on the gifts your handing out.
May 16 21:07:21 <+GenoFoxx> (hiya Kei)
May 16 21:07:28 <+RobertBuckey> Hey Kei!
May 16 21:08:06 <+GenoFoxx> how many followers can a PC get?
May 16 21:10:09 <+RobertBuckey> So there’s no set limit, but ring giving requires an expense of ten rings (the currency in this setting) per person attending the party they’re trying to recruit.
May 16 21:10:40 <+RobertBuckey> They can also spend additional rings to get additional bonuses.
May 16 21:13:01 <+GenoFoxx> What do the followers do for the PC and conversely what does the PC do for the followers?
May 16 21:13:19 <+GenoFoxx> is setting for mass combat?
May 16 21:14:00 <+RobertBuckey> They function as Extras under the PC’s control. Savage Worlds works really well with large numbers of followers.
May 16 21:15:26 <+RobertBuckey> Is it for mass combat? It can certainly handle it.
May 16 21:17:39 <+GenoFoxx> so they act as hero support
May 16 21:18:32 <+GenoFoxx> Other than being a gunslinger what other careers are available for the PC’a
May 16 21:19:11 <+RobertBuckey> Yeah. Different groups will have different play styles when it comes to mass combat, theater of the mind vs miniatures, for examples. That’s what’s great about Savage Worlds.
May 16 21:19:14 <+GenoFoxx> (the floor is open for questions from the viewers)
May 16 21:20:48 <+RobertBuckey> Well, basically anything you can imagine in a western. There are two Arcane backgrounds which focus on various connections to the gods, the Godi, which are priests, and Veleda, which are female seers.
May 16 21:21:45 <+RobertBuckey> Another are the Rune Engineers, which combine modern steam technology with the Runes. You can also be a Skald, or even a Master Skald, which is an Arcane Background that allows you to bring the Sagas alive with the powers of your storytelling.
May 16 21:22:36 <+GenoFoxx> Are there any special weapons, especially guns?
May 16 21:24:01 <+RobertBuckey> Oooh! Great question! So when it comes to “mundane” weapons, there is the ax gun, which is exactly what it sounds like. A gun with an ax where there would be a bayonet. Not super practical for firearms, so you sacrifice a little bit in accuracy, but it’s a gun with an ax.
May 16 21:24:37 <+RobertBuckey> Now, there are also legendary items, which your character can acquire over the course of his adventures.
May 16 21:26:18 <+GenoFoxx> Any that you’d like to reveal or are they a trade secret?
May 16 21:26:33 <+RobertBuckey> So for example there’s the dwarf crafted pistol, which is a beautifully engraved revolver which never jams. There’s also, for example, the Wolf’s Iron, a rifle with a stock allegedly made from a tooth torn from the Fenris Wolf.
May 16 21:26:58 <+GenoFoxx> cool
May 16 21:28:30 <+GenoFoxx> how are the relations with the 8 realms?
May 16 21:28:31 <+RobertBuckey> Yeah, I am a big fan of the Wolf’s Iron. It is a lever action rifle which growls every time it is cocked, howls when it fires, and its bearer can control wolves.
May 16 21:28:49 <+GenoFoxx> double coolness
May 16 21:29:17 <+RobertBuckey> Are you referring to the other eight worlds of Norse myth?
May 16 21:29:25 <+GenoFoxx> Yes?
May 16 21:31:36 <+RobertBuckey> So the focus for now is Midgard, specifically the west. The frontier region is rumored to have an entrance to Muspelheim, due to the large number of Fire Jotun that have been witnessed there.
May 16 21:32:38 <+RobertBuckey> I plan on a later expansion and plot point campaign having more focus on particularly Asgard, as the Sigruni are trying to figure out a way to return to Valhalla.
May 16 21:34:56 <+GenoFoxx> Are there any rules for the players to craft their own special items?
May 16 21:36:19 <+RobertBuckey> No, as the legendary items are otherworldy, created by acts of the Gods or other supernatural creatures like Dwarves.
May 16 21:38:53 <+RobertBuckey> Norse legend has items created by the Dwarves with rather esoteric ingredients, like “the footsteps of a cat”. I feel like that’s kind of out of the abilities of mortals to make.
May 16 21:40:03 <+GenoFoxx> so a quest in of itself to get said items even if you can convince the smith to make it
May 16 21:40:44 <+RobertBuckey> Oh yeah, that’s a great plot hook for GMs to use.
May 16 21:41:06 <+GenoFoxx> how well do mundane weapons work on the more than mortal?
May 16 21:41:37 <+GenoFoxx> can you gun-down Thor?
May 16 21:44:15 <+RobertBuckey> Oh, the Gods themselves? No, there’s no fighting them. They’re plot devices. Thor will turn your character into red paste with Mjolnir. Even the Sigruni are heavily diminished by the incident which saw them trapped on Midguard.
May 16 21:45:43 <+GenoFoxx> what about the lower tier creatures?
May 16 21:46:52 <+RobertBuckey> Trolls and whatnot? They’re killable. Tough, but killable.
May 16 21:57:59 <+GenoFoxx> sorry for the delay the nurse distracted me
May 16 21:58:08 <+RobertBuckey> Hey, no worries.
May 16 21:58:59 <+GenoFoxx> how many towns and cities are there and are they connected by railroads?
May 16 22:01:58 <+RobertBuckey> So there are seven larger towns, and a few minor towns and villages that we cover. Obviously GMs can thrown in others as they see fit. The railroad is still being built, so a few aren’t connected to the railroad yet.
May 16 22:03:10 <+RobertBuckey> There’s one town in particular, Loki’s Ridge, which is your stereotypical lawless boomtown, and is the last town on the line. The conductors are known for calling out to passengers when the train rolls into the station “next stop, Valhalla!”
May 16 22:04:30 <+GenoFoxx> heh
May 16 22:04:47 <+RobertBuckey> Well hey, I work tonight, so do you mind if we go ahead and wrap this up?
May 16 22:05:04 <+GenoFoxx> sure
May 16 22:05:25 <+RobertBuckey> Any last questions?
May 16 22:05:25 <+GenoFoxx> just cut loose on anything that’s on your mind
May 16 22:05:49 <+GenoFoxx> could you provide a link to your fundraiser campaign
May 16 22:06:11 <+GenoFoxx> and if you have a character sheet could you also post the link?
May 16 22:07:09 * Motulev reads the backlogs
May 16 22:07:57 <+RobertBuckey> Okay. Well hey folks, thanks for reading! If you backed the Kickstarter, I wan to tell you how much this means to me. I spent almost two years writing this, during that time I changed job, had to study for two pretty tough licensing exams, and my father passed away. It’s been a long journey, and I’m very excited to share this with you.
May 16 22:08:52 <+RobertBuckey> This is my first project, and there’s plenty of more ideas where this one came from! I’ve already started working on two more plot point campaigns, plus a few other Savage Worlds settings.
May 16 22:10:09 <+GenoFoxx> It’s been a pleasure having you here with us today
May 16 22:10:48 <+GenoFoxx> Please remember you’re welcome to drop on by and hang out with us anytime
May 16 22:10:53 <+RobertBuckey> Serious shout out to Alan from Gallant Knight Games, plus the artists Mike, Alan, and Jeremy who provided the logo and artwork, as well as to Jim and Krystal from Crit Hit, for giving me a platform to run games of this.
May 16 22:11:08 <+RobertBuckey> Thanks Geno!
May 16 22:11:16 <+RobertBuckey> And here’s the link to the Kickstarter, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gallantknightgames/sagas-and-six-guns?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=sagas+%26+six-guns&fbclid=IwAR33p0BreM7OlkyGjISwvkbwF76t7pPttDtbvgUrXCK5dtzCL4yx6k7OjKg
May 16 22:11:31 <+RobertBuckey> Unfortunately, I don’t have a character sheet just yet.
May 16 22:11:58 <+GenoFoxx> No worries
May 16 22:12:02 <+RobertBuckey> Well hey everyone, thanks for reading this, and thanks for the support. Have a wonderful rest of your day. Thanks Geno and Dan!
