<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> ok so hi everybody
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> i am Mattia Arnaudo, one of the author of Vulcania RPG
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> a project that is currently running on kickstarter
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> Hi, I’m Simone, the other author.
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> sorry if i am a bit slow to answer but i live in Switzerland and here it’s 2 am in the morning 😛
<~Dan> You’re a trooper. The second we’ve had in as many days. 🙂 No worries!
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> We both partecipete, so we can support each other in this night mission!
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> So speaking about the game Vulcania is a tabletop roleplaying game full of action, conspiracies and investigation, set in the smoky atmospheres of the industrial revolution of a Fantasy – Steampunk world.
<~Dan> (Howdy, Captain_Groove!)
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> The game uses an original d12 system created by us
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> we’ve been working very hard on the project for the past four years.
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> and now we are near to our goal
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> the kickstarter campaign is running and we are at 76%
<~Dan> (Just a reminder to give us a (done) when you’re ready for questions. 🙂 )
<~Dan> Thanks, guys! The floor is open to questions!
<~Dan> Can you say a bit more about the setting? Does it take place on an alternate Earth, or on its own world?
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> The game is set in a fantasy world about the year after the end of devastating world
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> +war sorry
<~Dan> No problem. What was the war fought over?
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> on vulcania civilization was born and raised on six volcanic archipelagos that have always fought among themselves for supremacy
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> the industrial revolution conumed most of the resources, so when an unkown land was discovered the race for colonization began
<~Dan> What is the tech level of the setting?
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> the war involved all the isle-nations and ended when the Mostucaal dropped the z-bomb in the main volcano of Abrabazem
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> Ant that’s where steampunk comes in!
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> The technological level is that of the industrial revolution based on steam
<~Dan> Are all of the island chains equal in that regard?
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> The steam power comes from the energy accumulated in the Vulcanus batteries
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> the discovery of this technology has triggered the industrial revolution
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> Each isle-nation is different and has its own characteristics.
<~Dan> Can you give some examples of the technology that’s available in various areas; e.g., transportation, medicine, military, etc.?
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> There are airhips and steam powered cars
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> pistols firing lightning genereted by electrolytic reactions
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> alchemical stimulants
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> jackets with metal wings
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> these are some examples
<~Dan> Are there artificial limbs?
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> Yes, is it possible to replace an arm or a leg following an accident
<~Dan> Is there magic in this setting?
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> but it’s not socially acceptable to replace healthy limbs to increase one’s power
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> No, everything supernatural has a scientific explanation
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> science obviously has different parameters than our world
<~Dan> (Howdy, JoeTheGM!)
<+JoeTheGM> Hello everyone!
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> hi joe
<~Dan> (JoetheGM: (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1059671560/vulcania-role-playing-game?ref=project_link&fbclid=IwAR2qBPVF6FL3CMouwzRDTHWz9erZ2il9X8Y8mf4QoWqpDK92us_lijfq96A)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1059671560/vulcania-role-playing-game?ref=project_link&fbclid=IwAR2qBPVF6FL3CMouwzRDTHWz9erZ2il9X8Y8mf4QoWqpDK92us_lijfq96A )
<+JoeTheGM> Thank you!
<~Dan> You mentioned the archipelagos all being different. Can you give us an overview of them?
<~Dan> (You’re welcome!)
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> Nuugard is a lethal and wild territory tempered by the ice and the fire of a thousand battles.
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> its population is very brutal but at the same time very attached to nature
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> Ketnive is a isle nation ruled by an imperial distanction that has ruled for more than a thousand years.
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> the whole population is at the same level below the emperor.
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> imperial bureaucrats decide all aspects of citizens’ lives
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> culture and architecture have an oriental characterization.
<~Dan> (Welcome to #randomworlds, Aramanthus! 🙂 )
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> Balastoc is a backward state, poor and overpopulated
<~Dan> ( Aramanthus, current topic: (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1059671560/vulcania-role-playing-game?ref=project_link&fbclid=IwAR2qBPVF6FL3CMouwzRDTHWz9erZ2il9X8Y8mf4QoWqpDK92us_lijfq96A)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1059671560/vulcania-role-playing-game?ref=project_link&fbclid=IwAR2qBPVF6FL3CMouwzRDTHWz9erZ2il9X8Y8mf4QoWqpDK92us_lijfq96A )
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> is governed by a theocracy that has only accepted technology a few years ago.
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> Hi Aramanthus
<+Aramanthus> Sounds like and interesting discussion.
<~Dan> I’d like to think so, Aramanthus. 😀
<~Dan> If you have any questions for our guests, fire away! 🙂
<+Aramanthus> It’s been a long time since I have been in a chatroom
<~Dan> We get a lot of that. 🙂
<+JoeTheGM> Does each island or realm have a different technology level? How does magic and technology interact?
<+Aramanthus> Are we talking about a scifi world or a fantasy world?
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> The world of Vulcania is a fantasy-steampunk world
<+Aramanthus> It almost sounds like David Weber’s “Offf Armegeddons Reef”
<+Aramanthus> Sounds cool
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> so it’s not a scifi or a classic fantasy
<~Dan> VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo: You mentioned that there’s no real magic… In what sense is it “fantasy”?
<~Dan> (Howdy, BPIJonathan!)
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> magic doesn’t exist on Vulcania all the “extraornidary” powers are based on the mind so we are talking about psionic powers
<~Dan> Ah, I see.
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> the technological level can vary significantly
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> fantasy because there are some fantasy creatures
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> mutated creatures
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> to answer joe: in some countries technology is less traditionally used
<~Dan> What was the source of the mutations? That z-bomb you mentioned?
<~Dan> (Welcome to #randomworlds, Guest60!)
<~Dan> (Guest60: You can set your name with the /nick command; e.g., /nick Dan 🙂 )
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> the z-bomb destroyed the Abrab volcano causing the appearance of toxic clouds that contaminated the ground and the aquifers
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> all creatures that have come into contact with these substances have undergone mutations
<+JoeTheGM> Contaminated with what?
<~Dan> (wb, JoeTheGM!)
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> with a mutagen contained in the gases released by the explosion of the volcano
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> this is a phenomenon that has affected massively only one of the isles-nations: the abarabazem
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> other nations are populated by human beings, and animals can be particularly picturesque beasts
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> but the term fantasy means that it is a different world from our own
<+Aramanthus> So do various cities use the gase to bring light to their nights?
<+Aramanthus> And if they do, does the presence of the gases cause the mutations?
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> all of the technology is connected to volcanoes. Vulcanus batteries accumulate steam energy thanks to magmatic stones and gases are used to fly airships and zeppelins.
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> but the mutagen gas is only in Abrabazem
<~Dan> Do the volcanoes not cause much destruction?
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> no, the volcanoes are considered a resource
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> not a danger
* ~Dan nods
<~Dan> Can you give a few examples of the mutated creatures you mentioned earlier?
<~Dan> (Howdy, RayM!)
<+RayM> (Hidey ho neighborino!)
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> For example abominations, deformed creatures that can take on different aspects and abilities
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> surviving humans have developed mutations such as horns, strange-colored skin, additional limbs and so on
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> changing the subject, one important thing to keep in mind of the setting is the presence of the three monopolies that lead the tech
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> The engineers, that control the secrets of the vulcanus batteries
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> the alchemists that keep the secrets of extremely powerful reactions
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> and the interactions that some substances may have with human physiology
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> and the markonists that can interact with conlio
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> a particular metal capable of transemitting brain waves
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> they can control drones and remotes devicies
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> or interact with people’s minds
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> these corporations have increased their power since the end of the war and now are more influent than governments
<~Dan> (Howdy, WaltSCie!)
<~Dan> (WaltSCie, current topic: (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1059671560/vulcania-role-playing-game?ref=project_link&fbclid=IwAR2qBPVF6FL3CMouwzRDTHWz9erZ2il9X8Y8mf4QoWqpDK92us_lijfq96A)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1059671560/vulcania-role-playing-game?ref=project_link&fbclid=IwAR2qBPVF6FL3CMouwzRDTHWz9erZ2il9X8Y8mf4QoWqpDK92us_lijfq96A )
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> we tried to create a game with a varied setting
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> with fast mechanics that could handle combat moments well
<~Dan> Do you have a character sheet that we can see?
<+VulcaniaRPG-SimoneRaspi> yes of course
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> how can we send a copy of the character sheet here Dan?
<~Dan> If it’s posted somewhere, you can just post the URL here.
<~Dan> (Welcome to #randomworlds, Guest67!)
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> You can find it in our Kickstarer page, under the GearPills section
<~Dan> (wb, WaltSCie)
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> we realized a follow up broadcast where want to analyze the core aspects and mechanics of the d12 System used by Vulcania
<~Dan> Vulcania-SimoneRapsi: Got it. Can you describe the core mechanic?
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> they are also on our YouTube channel
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> (Link: https://studio.youtube.com/channel/UCTsE51eI6FR8HHbZS0y66Ww)https://studio.youtube.com/channel/UCTsE51eI6FR8HHbZS0y66Ww
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> In Vulcania every Test is resolved using a d12. On high values, you will unleash your hero’s special powers but you can also use the gears of fate to influence your destiny but be careful! Destiny always pretend something in return!
<~Dan> Heh. 🙂
<~Dan> brb — please continue!
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> To overcome any challenge the world throws at your Character, you need one of the Skill scores to add to the d12 the Narrator asks you to roll.
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> Every Character is given four Attributes, representing their innate physical and mental talents: Stamina, Dexterity, Mind and Magnetism. Each Attribute feeds into four Skills that define how the Character developed their raw talent during their life.
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> the most characteristic Aspects are the Opportunities and the Gears of Fate
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> An Opportunity allows you not just to pass a Test, but also shape the course of events.
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> how does an Opportunity manifest? Mostly, it is either of two ways
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> when a Test is called, a result on the d12, before adding any modifier, of 11 or 12 triggers an Opportunity.
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> The second, however, is spending a Gear of Fate to upgrade a simple Success to a Success with Opportunity
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> At the beginning of every game, each of you at the table has 3 Gears of Fate that can use to shift the balance of fate
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> They can be used to trigger Opportunity after a succesful Test
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> Alternatively, you can spend Gears to roll again Tests, hoping for a better result!
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> Beware, though! The Narrator collects any spent Gears, using them to make your life slightly more miserable!
<~Dan> How so?
<~Dan> (Welcome to #randomworlds, Guest01!)
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> He can give them to the players to make something unespected happen
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> or to activate special abilities of the enemies
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> Combat Arts the Characters know add special actions that can be activated by spending an Opportunity on them. In the same way the narrator can make enemies more dangerous
<~Dan> Speaking of which, how does combat work in this game?
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> The game mechanics of Vulcania provide that it is always the player to make the dice rolls against fixed scores of enemies, threats and events. In this way the narrator is totally free to weave the narrative without constraints or interruptions.
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> At the beginning of combat, you roll an Initiative Test to establish who gets to act when. When it is your turn, your Character can take a Maneuver and an Action. As a rule of thumb, for now, consider a Maneuver anything that does not require a Test to happen. The most common Maneuver is moving. When a Test is necessary to resolve it, instead, it take
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> quite classic
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> the particular aspect is that non player characters do not roll anything, it is up to players to see if the attack hits or misses with a dodge (melee) or elude (ranged) Tests
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> Each weapon is assigned its own damage progression bar, assigning a damage value to the d12 roll to hit.
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> So with only one dice roll you can see if your attack hits and how many damages it inflicts
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> I hope that we have been able to give some information useful to understand the game mechanics and the setting
<~Dan> Does strength affect melee damage?
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> it’s hard to explain without some visual support
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> no, damage is only influenced by weapons, character abilities or tactical aspects (like numerical superiority)
<+Vulcania-SimoneRapsi> Now Dan we are vey sorry but in less than 3 hours we have to wake up
<~Dan> Need to wrap things up?
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> yes but we’d be happy to answer any other questions you’d like to ask us tomorrow.
<~Dan> Okay! Thanks very much for joining us! If you can hang on just a minute more, I’ll get the log posted and link you. 🙂
<+VulcaniaRPG-MattiaArnaudo> ok np
