<+Polyhedralknight> Well I”m Mickey Barfield. I’m the lead designer at The Polyhedral Knights. We produced Spy, Pathogen Unclassified, Wicked Pacts and currenlty working on Dark Times
<+Polyhedralknight> Our project we are doing now is game related
<+TGI-Dragonfly> Hey! Yes, I’m back. Got distracted by my 11 month old.
<&Silverlion> Wicked Pacts is cool. What is “Unclassified?”
<+Polyhedralknight> I was approached by an actor and producer about IP on Pathogen Unclassified
<+Polyhedralknight> Unclassified is the story of what happened before Pathogen Unclassified. It is what caused the world to go to Hell in a handbasket
<+Polyhedralknight> Since I”m kind of a no body in Hollywood but Kevin and Andre seemed to really like what I did they talked to me about doing a Kickstarter for this. THey were hoping it would help fund the film they want to shoot. I wrote a screen play that they liked a lot
<+Polyhedralknight> Though the KS has been weak at best. I was hoping the other guys would put something in. I know they are busy doing lots of projects in Hollywood. So I’m kind of left on my own to rally this. THe gaming community I”m sure is looking more for gaming stuff.
<+Polyhedralknight> Silverlion thanks for the complement on Wicked Pacts. Glad you like it
<&Silverlion> Sounds like you’ve got a good thing going.
<+Polyhedralknight> We have had a lot of good success with that game
<+Polyhedralknight> Our newest game Dark Times is shaping up to be something awesome also
<+Polyhedralknight> We are even looking at doing a Spy 2.0 along with a supplement
<~Dan> (Oh, ready for questions, Polyhedralknight?)
<+TGI-Dragonfly> Polyhedralknight – I was just looking at your stuff for the first time, and it looks really, really neat! I’m into superhero rpgs. Can you talk a little about the system that you use for Dark Times?
<+TGI-Dragonfly> How does it stand out or differ from other games out there?
<+Polyhedralknight> Dark Times is a Cyberpunk setting where corporations have figured a way to create supers and see them as company property.
<~Dan> TGI-Dragonfly: I’ll just interject that Dark Times will use the same system as Wicked Pacts, which was the favorite game my wife and I played at GenCon two years ago. 🙂
<+Polyhedralknight> It creates an interesting playability with the characters who either are company lap dogs or those wanting their freedom
<+Polyhedralknight> Thanks Dan
<+Polyhedralknight> I have a link to something if you care to look at it.
<~Dan> Link away!
<+TGI-Dragonfly> I can imagine! It’s already funded, correct? When does it hit the “shelves”?
<+Polyhedralknight> This is the KS video for Dark Times
<+Polyhedralknight> (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7LCbj3vWAc&t=1s)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7LCbj3vWAc&t=1s
<+Polyhedralknight> This is the link to the Game basics…
<+Polyhedralknight> (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djWqL4S_iZo&t=32s)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djWqL4S_iZo&t=32s
<+TGI-Dragonfly> I’m watching now. The art is amazing!
<+TGI-Dragonfly> I love the aesthetic
<~Dan> To give us some context for “Unclassified”, can you tell us the premise of Pathogen Unclassified?
<+Polyhedralknight> Thanks, we have tried hard.
<+Polyhedralknight> Pathogen Unclassified takes place 3 years after a global parasitic outbreak. Most of the people turned into mindless flesh eaters. A small % turned into a hive mentality. THey have a ranking of workers, warriors, Queen elite, and even a queen. People see that the Hive seems to have a plan and missions. An even smaller % were infected but the parasite didn’t
<+Polyhedralknight> take over instead turned them into psychics.
<+Polyhedralknight> People play survivors in this post apoc world
<~Dan> So “Unclassifed” takes place before the outbreak? Or at the very start?
<+Polyhedralknight> Now the twist is that this outbreak was designed by aliens who wished to have the parastie turn everyone into the hive and the hive was to prep the world for their alien masters arrival. But Gaia Life solutions a large corporation came across the alien pod that didn’t launch the parasites and they tinkered with it.
<+Polyhedralknight> Yes Unclassified is about what happened when Gaia Life Solutions came across this pod and they wanted to experiment. Our heroes work for the company and realize this is a bad thing and try to detroy it but thing go sideways for everyone
<~Dan> So the Hive is what the pathogen was supposed to create, and the zombies and psychics are a result of the tinkering?
<~Dan> How long will “Unclassified” be?
<+Polyhedralknight> The movie will be a short film. They are looking at 20 to 30 minutes long
<+Polyhedralknight> They intend to shoot it here in Jacksonville, Florida. Which should make it cheaper than Hollywood.
<+TGI-Dragonfly> Do we get to see hive mentalities, zombies, and psychics by the end of Unclassified? Or does it remain relatively grounded in the “real world”?
<+Polyhedralknight> In Unclassified, the scientist who are looking into this see a person infected by accident. They then see that he is intelligent but not the person that used to be and he talks about how he needs to prepare for the masters.
<+Polyhedralknight> the heroes realize this could be a world ender and plot to destory all these parasites.
<+Polyhedralknight> But Gaia Life Solutions is not having that
<~Dan> What is Gaia Life trying to accomplish with the pod?
<+Polyhedralknight> At the end of the film we are left to realize that there are two strains to be and now they are out there.
<+TGI-Dragonfly> Very nice!
<+Polyhedralknight> Gaia LIfe Solutions is the largest GMO food producer and Pharma company
<+Polyhedralknight> They are seeing this life form as something to exploit
<~Dan> But do they have any specific plans in mind? Or do they not get past the experimenting stage?
<+Polyhedralknight> In the movie they are still in the exploring stage. Then when one of the people gets infected that is when things accelerate
<+Polyhedralknight> They know that the parasite has incredible healing quality
<+TGI-Dragonfly> So you went from game design to writing a movie script. How difficult was that transition? Had you done something like that before?
<+Polyhedralknight> Its an odd thing. Kevin is a guy I knew from my days in High School. He went out to Hollywood
<+Polyhedralknight> Have you seen Batman vs Darth Vader on YouTube?
<+Polyhedralknight> He did that
<+Polyhedralknight> He is Batman
<+Polyhedralknight> He does a lot of stuff with Bat in the Sun productions
<+TGI-Dragonfly> Yes! Wow! Very cool!
<+TGI-Dragonfly> So, he’s the lead in Classified?
<+Polyhedralknight> Anyways he was in town a few months ago and looked me up. We talked and he seemed interested in my IP
<+Polyhedralknight> He is one of the leads. He plays a security person the main dr who is looking to detroy this teams up with
<~Dan> And this is meant to be a proof of concept for a full-blown feature, IIRC?
<+Polyhedralknight> Any ways in my younger days I did some amatuer film making
<+Polyhedralknight> Lately I have dusted off my equipment
<+Polyhedralknight> I shoot and edit all our videos for The Polyhedral Knights
<+Polyhedralknight> We found it’s easier to shoot a link about the game and the mechnanics to people
<+Polyhedralknight> We even toyed with a test hype thing for Unclassified. These are NOT the people in the film and it was me directing it. Unclassified will have actual professionals
<+Polyhedralknight> If you want to see the VERY short scene we toyed with I can send it
<+Polyhedralknight> try not to laugh though. lol
<+TGI-Dragonfly> Sure thing!
<+Polyhedralknight> (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy9dcLacwlE)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy9dcLacwlE
<+Polyhedralknight> its short
<+Polyhedralknight> very short
<+TGI-Dragonfly> I won’t laugh. I’m fascinated by the process.
<+Polyhedralknight> We had fun shooting it.
<+TGI-Dragonfly> Very cool! My daughter is attending a high school with a film strand, so they’re working on stuff like that. It’s cool to see a concept at it’s early stages and to think of what it will develop into.
<+Polyhedralknight> I was missing a few pieces of equipment during the shoot. So did what I had to for the shoot
<~Dan> I assume that Kevin is a gamer?
<+Polyhedralknight> Not really. He is a comic book guy
<+Polyhedralknight> obviously since he is linked to a lot of fan film
<+Polyhedralknight> He has been in other movies and shows
<~Dan> How did he learn about Pathogen Unclassified?
<+Polyhedralknight> He was Lazer in Dodge ball
<+Polyhedralknight> When he came to see me we talked about what we had been up to. I showed him Pathogen and he was fascinated by it
<+Polyhedralknight> Asked if I’d be interested in writing up a pitch for a short film
<+Polyhedralknight> So I wrote a 2 page thing up that night
<~Dan> That’s pretty cool that a non-gamer liked it so much.
<+Polyhedralknight> THe next day he asked for a 1 minute pitch . I totally flubbed it but he loved it
<+Polyhedralknight> then asked me to pitch to Andre Gordon (producer) and flubbed that. HE loved it. WTH. lol
<+Polyhedralknight> I asked them, how many bad pitches do you hear?
<+Polyhedralknight> they said “A lot”
* ~Dan chuckles
<+Polyhedralknight> Anyways. I’m not trying to be negative but the fund raising for this is NOT going great. It’s ok though. Lot of different factors that might contribute to why.
<~Dan> If the short gets made and takes off, what are the odds of a feature film?
<+TGI-Dragonfly> Will you address those factors and try again?
<+Polyhedralknight> Odds for a feature are depends on what the BIG producers feel about it. I think good. But again it needs to get launched first.
<+Polyhedralknight> IN regards to trying again… .hmmmm
<+Polyhedralknight> I would say this. ….
<+Polyhedralknight> I would be ok to try again but I think my friends in Hollywood need to rethink their part perhaps. This is a realm they are unfamiliar with and especially the crowdfunding part they are unknown.
<+Polyhedralknight> I really hoped they would have done more hyping before and during it. But they haven’t
<+Polyhedralknight> I have
<~Dan> (Welcome to #randomworlds, Wyrmling!)
<+Wyrmling> Thank you.
<~Dan> (Here for the Q&A, or just a general visit? 🙂 )
<+Wyrmling> (Visiting. Which Q&A do we have? )
<~Dan> (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/529669762/unclassified?ref=project_build&fbclid=IwAR0YgQ3VfGT2522_dQPuEZRbbcBcAdypih4IpXuIK4RBg4JnBKJg4KiG554)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/529669762/unclassified?ref=project_build&fbclid=IwAR0YgQ3VfGT2522_dQPuEZRbbcBcAdypih4IpXuIK4RBg4JnBKJg4KiG554
<+TGI-Dragonfly> Interesting, polyhedral. If I hear you correctly, you’ve got the crowdfunding know-how, but you’re not connected to the communities that need to be leveraged beyond your friends?
<+TGI-Dragonfly> And they don’t have the crowd-funding know-how.
<+Polyhedralknight> I”m less connected to Hollywood
<+Polyhedralknight> I’m a gamer and game designer
<+Polyhedralknight> If they really pressed their fans it would have been funded by now
<~Dan> (Wyrmling: I’ll PM you the scoop about what’s going on at the moment. 🙂 )
<+Polyhedralknight> Bat in the Sun has over 2 million subscribers
<+Polyhedralknight> If a small portion of that even pledged the cheap pledges this would have been funded already
<~Dan> Frustrating. 😦
<+TGI-Dragonfly> Wow! Yeah, it would be cool if you could have those conversations and get those commitments from Bat in the Sun and others and try again. This is really cool and deserves to be made!
<~Dan> (Wyrmling: Did you get my PM?)
<+Polyhedralknight> I tried to but they are set in their ways and that’s ok. I think he is funny about using Bat in sun to showcase this. Since it’s not just him
<~Dan> What sort of system does Pathogen Unclassified use?
<+TGI-Dragonfly> That’s too bad, but you’ve got a good attitude about it. It’s been a pleasure talking, but I’d better go to bed. I’ve got an early day tomorrow and am beat. Best of luck to you going forward!
<+Polyhedralknight> It has it’s own system. ANd yes…. I have a video link for that also. lol
<+Polyhedralknight> (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPYw6_67Mf0&t=1s)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPYw6_67Mf0&t=1s
<+Polyhedralknight> Thanks TGI-Dragonfly
<+Polyhedralknight> Pathogen was written to reflect the world rather than force a world into a rule system
<+Polyhedralknight> I’ve had a lot of newbies to gaming really like this game
<~Dan> Do you have a character sheet that we can see?
<+Polyhedralknight> also it helps fix issues a lot of Post Apoc game have suffered from
<+Polyhedralknight> yes on our web page I’ll send the link
<+Polyhedralknight> (Link: http://nebula.wsimg.com/868d99c65043812fe9c7fbbaca65ec63?AccessKeyId=478C795CA10B8D16CF6E&disposition=0&alloworigin=1)http://nebula.wsimg.com/868d99c65043812fe9c7fbbaca65ec63?AccessKeyId=478C795CA10B8D16CF6E&disposition=0&alloworigin=1
<~Dan> What is the attribute scale?
<+Polyhedralknight> Each player distributes 1d8, 1d10, 1d10, 1d12, 1d12 and 1d20
<+Polyhedralknight> skills run from 0-5
<~Dan> And how do the skills relate to the attributes?
<+Polyhedralknight> If you have lets say Athletics and it falls under Reflex then lets say Reflex is a 1d12 and Athletics is skill of 2
<+Polyhedralknight> The GM issues a difficulty
<+Polyhedralknight> if the difficutly is tough then they need to roll 6 or better on 1d12
<+Polyhedralknight> if they meet or beat it they succeed
<+Polyhedralknight> This isn’t with any modifiers
<+Polyhedralknight> So the better your die type on an attribute is the better your chance
<+Polyhedralknight> Needless to say 1d8 is the weakest
<+Polyhedralknight> There are no throw away attributes
<+Polyhedralknight> Cause when we first created this the test group all made bad ass warriors
<+Polyhedralknight> but they then came across several issues where they needed charisma
<+Polyhedralknight> they all had 1d8 in charisma and they botched everything
<~Dan> In your previous example, what does the Athletics skill of 2 do?
<+Polyhedralknight> if same situation it would be 7 or better
<+Polyhedralknight> BTW don’t know if you know but we also produced NPC cards for each of our games. People seem to like those
<~Dan> That’s cool.
<~Dan> So skill levels reduce the difficulty?
<+Polyhedralknight> yes and situational modifiers
<~Dan> How does combat work?
<+Polyhedralknight> similiar, skills work the same. Hit points and Mental fortitude are all measured in levels. You will see on the sheet
<+Polyhedralknight> Once all points in that section is gone it moves on to the next
<+Polyhedralknight> Combat also if they are fighting large groups of infected they have a group of points that are split among the group. So large combat with infected moves fast
<+Polyhedralknight> Named characters or major npc’s have levels of HP
<+Polyhedralknight> In the game basics it details combat also
<+Polyhedralknight> That is why we do the videos. This way someone can view it and determine if this game is for them or not
* ~Dan nods
<~Dan> How deadly is combat?
<+Polyhedralknight> This system we might use for upcoming (eventually) games of Western and Swashbuckling
<+Polyhedralknight> Combat CAN be deadly but it has a Little cinematic flare.
<~Dan> How so?
<+Polyhedralknight> with Luck points it can be survivable
<+Polyhedralknight> Luck points let you spend to pull fat out of the fryer.
<~Dan> (wb, ChrisLites)
<~Dan> What are the capabilities of the various sorts of infected?
<+Polyhedralknight> Regular infected are just mindless munchers. Not very strong except they have the numbers
<+Polyhedralknight> Hive has workers which are usually the weaker types. they ingest people and turn the matter into something to be vomited up and reshaped to their purpose. ONe of the things they are to do is help Terra form the planet.
<+Polyhedralknight> one fo the things they are doing it changing the forrests
<+Polyhedralknight> they are creating a toxic forest that is spewing bad toxins to us but good to the alien master
<+Polyhedralknight> Next in the Hive is the warriors. they help get people to feed to the workers and protect projects
<+Polyhedralknight> Elites have their own list of abilities and are bad MoFos.
<~Dan> What sorts of abilities?
<~Dan> (Howdy, El_Squido!)
<+Polyhedralknight> Extra limbs, Acid Vomit, Mind control, Arm Spikes, Increased strength, few other fun ones also. More to come in the supplement we are planning
<~Dan> And the Queens?
<+Polyhedralknight> That’s the big secret. It’s only talked about and believed but in the basic book we didn’t put her in there.
<+Polyhedralknight> ONe of those things we plan to develop more in the supplement
<+Polyhedralknight> THey are the biggest cross between the alien masters and the creations that have happened with the parasite and human host
<~Dan> What are the psychics like?
<+Polyhedralknight> They are interesting characters and actually playable
<+Polyhedralknight> With each power they have they have a drawback.
<+Polyhedralknight> Most in the world don’t trust the psychics cause they worry the parasite will awake and take over instead
<+Polyhedralknight> Not to mention psychic powers are hard to see
<+Polyhedralknight> So most pychics hide their abilities if they can.
<~Dan> What sorts of abilities can they have?
<+Polyhedralknight> Telepathy, Telekinesis, Immunity, Heal, Clairvoyance, Emotion Control, Teleportation
<+Polyhedralknight> but with each power they have a drawback and these can be harsh.
<+Polyhedralknight> They can NEVER be infected and turned
<~Dan> What are some example drawbacks?
<~Dan> (Howdy, Crazy-Cabal!)
<+Polyhedralknight> LIke for Immunity it comes with Hemophilia
<+Crazy-Cabal> (Hello there)
<+Polyhedralknight> Telepathy suffers voices in their head
<+Polyhedralknight> Telekinesis- random items move around the psychic
<+Polyhedralknight> Heal suffers grey skin and black veins which is what most infected look like.
<+Polyhedralknight> Clairvoyance suffers getting locked into a trance when using the power
<+Polyhedralknight> Emotion control suffers emotional backlashes
<+Polyhedralknight> Teleportation suffers if stressed out could risk a random teleportation
<~Dan> In the time remainging, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
<+Polyhedralknight> Our games are awesome fun and easy to learn and play? lol
<+Polyhedralknight> We have videos of all our game mechanics you can learn in 10 to 15 minutes
<+Polyhedralknight> (Link: http://www.thepolyhedralknights.com/demos—cons.html)http://www.thepolyhedralknights.com/demos—cons.html
<~Dan> Thanks very much for joining us, Polyhedralknight!
<+Polyhedralknight> THanks for having me Dan. Always a pleasure
<~Dan> Standard reminder: Gratuities are always welcome at (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/ 🙂
<~Dan> Now, give me just a sec while I post the log and link you!
<+Polyhedralknight> I was JUST about to ask about that
