[19:47] <+JeffStormer> Hi everyone! I’m Jeff Stormer. I’m a tabletop podcaster (I host Party Of One, an Actual Play about 2-player games, and All My Fantasy Children, about RPG character creation), game designer, and the unofficial LARPwright of the Olive Garden restaurant.
[19:48] <+JeffStormer> For the purposes of our discussion, though, I designed Mission: Accomplished!, an RPG of Super-Spies and Office Meetings. You’ve saved the world, and now you have to sit down with HR and hash out who gets the promotion.
[19:48] <+JeffStormer> (end)
[19:48] <~Dan> Thanks, JeffStormer! The floor is open to questions!
[19:49] <~Dan> So the game doesn’t deal with the mission at all?
[19:52] <+JeffStormer> Yes and no. The game starts with the mission… Well, accomplished. You’re back at HQ in a cramped little meeting room. And over the course of the game you fill in the stuff that happened, by way of throwing people under the bus and sucking up to management.
[19:53] <~Dan> Does this game have a GM?
[19:53] <+JeffStormer> If you’ve ever played Paranoia!, the game is “Paranoia! post-mission briefing: The RPG.”
[19:54] <+JeffStormer> It DOES have a GM. Mission Control is there to be a terrible boss, and arbitrarily assign pluses and minuses as the game goes on.
[19:55] <~Dan> Is there a character sheet, and if so, can we see it?
[19:56] <+JeffStormer> There is not a character sheet per say. Each character has five parts, all made up on the fly:
[19:56] <+JeffStormer> 1. A spy name
[19:56] <+JeffStormer> 2. Pronouns
[19:57] <+JeffStormer> 3. Your role on the team (hacker, explosives expert, intern, PR rep, etc.)
[19:57] <+JeffStormer> 4. How you accomplished the primary objective of the assignment, your Big Hero Moment
[19:58] <+JeffStormer> 5. A fun fact, because we’re more of a family here at the office
[19:58] <+JeffStormer> (done)
[19:58] <~Dan> How does the game work?
[20:00] <+JeffStormer> First, players receive the Mission Dossier. It has all the faces and places important to the mission, as well as the Primary Objective, which you accomplished.
[20:01] <+JeffStormer> Then, each player (including MC) names one thing that went TERRIBLY wrong, that you’ll figure out who is responsible for in play.
[20:01] <+JeffStormer> Next, each player anonymously rats out two of the other players at the table, ways in which they made the mission a disaster.
[20:01] <~Dan> MC = GM?
[20:02] <+JeffStormer> Yes
[20:02] <+JeffStormer> Then you go one bt one, revealing cards and spinning your collosal mistakes as secret successes.
[20:03] <~Dan> What sorts of cards?
[20:03] <+JeffStormer> Finally, everyone rolls some dice, someone gets burned, someone gets promoted, and someone gets [redacted]
[20:03] <+JeffStormer> You write your anonymous complaints about coworkers on index cards, which are handed face down to MC.
[20:04] <+JeffStormer> (done)
[20:04] <~Dan> What is the card mechanic?
[20:05] <+JeffStormer> MC collects the index cards from players and then reveals them to players, exposing to each agent the myriad ways in which you ****** up.
[20:06] <+JeffStormer> Thats about it. It’s really lightweight and story game-y.
[20:06] <+JeffStormer> (done)
[20:07] <~Dan> What are the cards that get revealed? (Or did you answer that and I misunderstood?)
[20:08] <+JeffStormer> When it comes time to rat out your peers, each Agent writes two complaints on index cards, each about a different coworker.
[20:08] <~Dan> (Whoops! Sorry, lost my connection for a sec there.)
[20:08] <+JeffStormer> Those are then handed to MC, who reveals them to the group during play.
[20:08] <+JeffStormer> (done)
[20:10] <~Dan> How long does the game take to play?
[20:10] <+JeffStormer> 1-2 hours including character creation.
[20:11] <~Dan> What are the roleplaying aspects?
[20:12] <+JeffStormer> Basically you’re playing through the worst office meeting you’ve ever been in.
[20:13] <+JeffStormer> For every card played, you have to explain to MC why it wasn’t your fault, and how you secretly deserve a promotion.
[20:14] <+JeffStormer> All while throwing your coworkers further under the bus.
[20:14] <+JeffStormer> And for MC, it’s just micromanaging, conniving, backstabbing, and “professional development.”
[20:14] <+JeffStormer> It’s a game about dayjobs.
[20:14] <+JeffStormer> (done)
[20:14] <~Dan> (Howdy, Silverlion!)
[20:15] <~Dan> What’s the dice rolling mechanic?
[20:15] <+JeffStormer> Over the game, Agents accrue Commendation dice (good) and Citation dice (bad), at MC’s discretion.
[20:16] <~Dan> So based on their roleplaying?
[20:16] <~Dan> How well they CYA?
[20:16] <+JeffStormer> Yeah
[20:16] <+JeffStormer> At games end, everyone rolls, citation dice cancel out commendation dice, and whoever gets high result gets the promotion. Or, so they think before (spoilers).
[20:17] <+JeffStormer> (done)
[20:20] <~Dan> Is this your first RPG for publication?
[20:21] <+JeffStormer> Yes, I’ve self published a few short PDFs on itch.io but this is my KS release.
[20:21] <~Dan> What games influenced your design, if any?
[20:22] <&Silverlion> (Hi Dan)
[20:22] <+JeffStormer> Paranoia. Fiasco. Baron Munchausen. FATE, to an extent.
[20:25] <~Dan> What’s next for you? Anything on deck?
[20:26] <+JeffStormer> Not really. Feeling out my options. I figure the next game will come to me when it comes.
[20:26] <~Dan> Do you think you’ll stick to non-traditional games like this one?
[20:27] <+JeffStormer> Oh for sure. This is my wheelhouse. It might not be as funny. But it’ll be weird
[20:27] <+JeffStormer> Maybe I’ll make a proper PDF of my Olive Garden LARP.
[20:27] <+JeffStormer> (done)
[20:30] <~Dan> Hmm… I think I’m tapped for questions. Is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[20:31] <+JeffStormer> I don’t think so!
[20:31] <~Dan> Mind if we wrap up early, then?
[20:31] <+JeffStormer> Not at all!
[20:32] <~Dan> Okay! Thanks very much for joining us, JeffStormer!
