[19:33] <+AllenSaulnier> Well hello everyone. As you can read, I’m Allen Saulnier. I was invited a couple of weeks back when I posted on Kickstarter that I am creating my latest custom universe for RPG.
[19:33] <+AllenSaulnier> I am a filmmaker by trade, but I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons for 35 years now.
[19:34] <+AllenSaulnier> When I set out to create this new universe one of my players saw my first draft of the world map and suggested that others might want to play in it as well. So I decided to give Kickstarter a shot
[19:35] <+AllenSaulnier> So I am 30 days into the campaign and I am creating the first continent for players and gms alike to utilize with their rpgs
[19:36] <+AllenSaulnier> I am designing it to be used with whatever version of D&D and other rpgs as well. I am creating a fully mapped realm. Land, Cities, Dungeons you name it. I will be including details about the continent, world, and all the places along with the quests and campaigns.
[19:37] <+AllenSaulnier> However if you are a gm in need of a world and want to scrap all the quests and create your own, of course that is up to you. Really I wanted to give busy gms a resource to use however they wanted.
[19:37] <+AllenSaulnier> That’s pretty much it. If anyone wanted to ask questions or wants to know about specifics, fire away!
[19:38] <~Dan> Thanks, AllenSaulnier! The floor is open to questions!
[19:38] <~Dan> So a bit of confusion on my part: Is the product called Hiraeth Module or the Realm of Sonder?
[19:39] <+AllenSaulnier> Hiraeth Module. The continent of Hiraeth is the first module for the Realm of Sonder. I do have plans to do more modules for each continent on the world, but wanted to get a feel if anyone was really interested.
[19:39] <+AllenSaulnier> Plus it allowed me to produce something that I could get out to people in a shorter time frame. Not have to wait a year.
[19:40] <+AllenSaulnier> Hiraeth is a land mass roughly one third the size of Australia. So it is a big place to explore
[19:40] * ~Dan nods
[19:40] <+AllenSaulnier> Plus I will be including the underworld in the maps aswell.
[19:40] <~Dan> Sounds pretty ambitious!
[19:40] <+AllenSaulnier> My obsession with world building came from the first module I bought
[19:41] <+AllenSaulnier> Forgotten Realms
[19:41] <+AllenSaulnier> I loved it and wanted to remake the world history and quests for me and my little bro to play in.
[19:41] <+AllenSaulnier> It grew from there.
[19:41] <+AllenSaulnier> As a indy filmmaker I always seem to take on ambitious projects..
[19:41] <+AllenSaulnier> So this is pretty comfortable for me
[19:41] <~Dan> Heh. That does make sense, yes.
[19:42] <+SavAce> Is the module strictly system agnostic, or does it address any specific RPGs that may be used to play in it?
[19:43] <+AllenSaulnier> I want to make this as adaptable as possible. Plus I always hated when you bought a module and it wasn’t suited for characters of high or low levels. I will be setting the campaigns and quests with flexible villains, enemy levels.. Geographical challenges
[19:44] <+AllenSaulnier> I’m a storyteller by nature so really the story will be the part I add. The story and the setting and the GMs will have the freedom and capability to change what they need to, to make it work for their players
[19:45] <~Dan> So you’re including campaigns as well as a detailed setting in the book?
[19:46] <+AllenSaulnier> Hiraeth is a newly discovered region. Kind of like North America was. Only in a fantasy realm. The explorers were sent by contract of the realms most powerful Guild.
[19:46] <+AllenSaulnier> Yes Dan.
[19:46] <+AllenSaulnier> I want to give GMs all they need to start playing right away.
[19:46] <+AllenSaulnier> Get the kit. Add players and heat!
[19:46] <~Dan> 🙂
[19:46] <+AllenSaulnier> I have started on the nearly 100 city maps.
[19:47] <+AllenSaulnier> 150 plus landmarks
[19:47] <~Dan> Aside from completeness, what makes Hiraeth special?
[19:47] <+AllenSaulnier> The story and characters are filling in as I go!
[19:47] <+AllenSaulnier> Well, what I think makes it special is the story and history.
[19:48] <+AllenSaulnier> I have complexity added if you like that, but it can be just about exploring too. It’s really flexible to the group playing. Myself. I love GOT and the details hidden away for those who go looking
[19:49] <~Dan> Game of Thrones?
[19:49] <+AllenSaulnier> Find out the politics behind the guild war, the smuggling and how it was stopped. The strange disasters being concealed by the ruling class..
[19:49] <+AllenSaulnier> Yes sorry. Game of Thrones
[19:49] <~Dan> No worries. Just making sure I got that right. 🙂
[19:50] <+AllenSaulnier> I want the realm to be interesting for characters of all alignments. There will be opportunity for the most noble heroes and the delicious badguys!
[19:50] <+AllenSaulnier> save or exploit
[19:50] <+AllenSaulnier> I also will include timed events for GMs to add to any campaign.
[19:50] <+AllenSaulnier> On July 3rd an earthquake
[19:51] <+AllenSaulnier> September 14th a trade dispute
[19:51] * ~Dan nods
[19:51] <+AllenSaulnier> This will allow gms to add a backdrop to the quests they are running
[19:52] <+AllenSaulnier> Players can get involved or ignore. If your gms are anything like me, you’re used to players chasing anything that sparkles. So if that happens. Let it ride!
[19:52] <~Dan> Indeed!
[19:52] <~Dan> What percent of the continent has been colonized?
[19:52] <+SavAce> Is the setting parallel to North America in any other ways, as in… are the new explorers coming in coming from a place of technological or possibly military superiority, or is the dynamic something different?
[19:53] <~Dan> Oh, good question, SavAce!
[19:53] <+AllenSaulnier> The guild that contracted the explorers that discovered Hiraeth are the Skystone Guild.
[19:53] <+AllenSaulnier> Skystone is more useful than steel
[19:53] <+AllenSaulnier> more valuable than gold and a fundamental aspect of my world.
[19:54] <+AllenSaulnier> Skystone is floats.
[19:54] <+AllenSaulnier> Like the rocks in the movie Avatar( I actually added it to my world before the movie)
[19:55] <+AllenSaulnier> These stones are mined to allow for larger buildings, more elaborate buildings
[19:55] <+AllenSaulnier> It is used in armor to lighten and strengthen it
[19:55] <+AllenSaulnier> Not to mention the ability to make transporting anything all the easier.
[19:55] <+AllenSaulnier> But the most exciting is the sky ships that use the stone to sail in the air
[19:56] <+AllenSaulnier> When the skystone was mined to depletion the guild needed to fuel the demand and thus Hiraeth was discovered. They financed entire pilgrimages
[19:56] <+AllenSaulnier> Thousands of people looking for a new life, new opportunity and new wealth went
[19:57] <+AllenSaulnier> The nation is in the northern hemisphere but has a variety of landscapes unlike anything in North America
[19:58] <+AllenSaulnier> Obviously the Skystone is a key characteristic, but so are the regions now void of the mineral.
[19:58] <+AllenSaulnier> Carved sections scarred forever.
[19:58] <~Dan> (wb, Catseye!)
[19:58] <+AllenSaulnier> The realm was void of humans for over a thousand years and only the ruins of a forgotten civilization remains.
[19:59] <+AllenSaulnier> Which is also a key in discovering many of the strange occurrences on the continent!
[19:59] <~Dan> So are there any natives?
[20:00] <+AllenSaulnier> There are. Only they aren’t human. I have 3 new races in my world. Custom to my realm and they aren’t comfortable sharing.
[20:01] <~Dan> What are they?
[20:01] <+AllenSaulnier> Well without giving too much away. One will be a goblinoid race. Familiar in most of the world. A race of insect like creatures and the third will have to remain a complete mystery for now.
[20:02] <~Dan> Are they playable?
[20:02] <+AllenSaulnier> Of course.
[20:03] <~Dan> Are the other races of Sonder the fantasy standards?
[20:03] <+AllenSaulnier> The one thing I always strive for in my campaigns is allowing players to try anything. The “don’t say no! Ask how…” rule applies.
[20:04] <+AllenSaulnier> So if they want to play the secret race the tables are turned and they have the foreign people to defend or negotiate with.
[20:05] <+AllenSaulnier> As I develop the stories and work on the realm I am coming to the conclusion that there will be a series of novels that come from this.
[20:05] <+AllenSaulnier> I have toyed around with writing fantasy novels for years and I think this is a good place to start.
[20:05] <~Dan> Certainly sounds like it.
[20:06] <+AllenSaulnier> What is fun for those looking to support the campaign is that certain perks allow for their character names to be included in the realm. So a city or mountain will be named after them.
[20:06] <+AllenSaulnier> It will become part of the history.
[20:06] <~Dan> Nice touch.
[20:07] <+AllenSaulnier> I think so.
[20:07] <+AllenSaulnier> Maybe make it in the novel too.
[20:07] * ~Dan nods
[20:07] <~Dan> Did you see my earlier question about races?
[20:08] <+AllenSaulnier> which one?
[20:08] <~Dan> [20:03] <~Dan> Are the other races of Sonder the fantasy standards?
[20:08] <+AllenSaulnier> just did.
[20:08] <+AllenSaulnier> yes. I want to include the norms. Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes, etc.
[20:08] <+AllenSaulnier> You name it they’ll be in there.
[20:09] <+AllenSaulnier> My group still uses them and I just keep adding.
[20:09] <+AllenSaulnier> At one point I added Jedi’s to my realm
[20:09] <+AllenSaulnier> a mix of martial artists with psionics.
[20:10] <+AllenSaulnier> So if there is a gm that doesn’t want to use my new race or include one of their own, they can easily substitute one for the other.
[20:11] <~Dan> Do you include any interesting twist to the standard races?
[20:12] <+AllenSaulnier> As it stands I will be creating a new pantheon of Gods and Goddesses.
[20:12] <+AllenSaulnier> That will influence a lot.
[20:12] <+AllenSaulnier> I will also for my own campaign be changing the races limitations and bonuses.
[20:12] <+AllenSaulnier> I want the races to feel different
[20:13] <+AllenSaulnier> but that really will be up to the gm and players who get the kit.
[20:13] <+AllenSaulnier> Eventually if everything goes well with the kickstarter campaign I plan on making a custom game of my own. New rules lists of skills, spells, etc.
[20:13] <+AllenSaulnier> that’s down the road.
[20:14] <+AllenSaulnier> Currently we play 2nd Eddition modified vastly from the original books. We have pages and pages of rewrites for old rules.
[20:15] <+AllenSaulnier> I will be taking what I have learned that works over the years and adapting to a custom set. But that isn’t mandatory for Hiraeth.
[20:15] <+AllenSaulnier> can I include the link to the campain on kickstarter with the video here? Might spark some more questions
[20:16] <~Dan> Sure!
[20:16] <~Dan> Just post the URL.
[20:16] <+AllenSaulnier> (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2004211550/hiraeth-module-tabletop-gaming-fantasy-rpg?ref=creator_nav)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2004211550/hiraeth-module-tabletop-gaming-fantasy-rpg?ref=creator_nav
[20:17] <+AllenSaulnier> I always asked questions like. Why hasn’t electricity been invented yet? So I came up with a reason for the lack of technology in my realms.
[20:17] <~Dan> What are some of the more interesting environments on Hiraeth?
[20:18] <+AllenSaulnier> A stream of matter encircles the entire solar system and this matter emits an electro-magnetic pulse that prevents electricity from being sustained.
[20:19] <+AllenSaulnier> It keeps technology at bay and allows magic and divine magic to fill in the gaps.
[20:19] <+AllenSaulnier> But if you’re playing star wars or some other game system, just remove that from the realm and you’re golden
[20:21] <~Dan> What are some of the more interesting environments on Hiraeth?
[20:23] <+AllenSaulnier> The skystones are my favourite. However there are a number of ancient cities deep within the stone forest that are packed with ancient treasures, curses and access to vast underworld dungeons and highways.
[20:24] <+AllenSaulnier> I have a variety of unique stone formations, new plant life and animals and monsters for players to discover.
[20:24] <+AllenSaulnier> You wont find them in any monster manual so players wont know weaknesses or behaviors.
[20:24] <~Dan> How extensive is your bestiary?
[20:25] <+AllenSaulnier> Well for the first module I will include about 50 new species.
[20:25] <+AllenSaulnier> Being a fan of Witcher 3
[20:25] <+AllenSaulnier> I built in the weaknesses and tricks to fighting these monsters.
[20:25] <+AllenSaulnier> Yes you can kill certain creatures with might and magic, but if you have this herb or make this potion it will be far easier
[20:26] * ~Dan nods
[20:26] <+AllenSaulnier> I will steal lots of great stuff from my fav games and movies too
[20:26] <~Dan> Oh? Like what? 🙂
[20:26] <+AllenSaulnier> I don’t have to reinvent the wheel on everything. After all I am a fan and a creator.
[20:27] <~Dan> Sure.
[20:27] <+AllenSaulnier> I guess I should include my influences. So I have mentioned Game of Thrones and Witcher, but I loved Skyrim, Lord of the Rings
[20:27] <+AllenSaulnier> Drangonlance
[20:27] <+AllenSaulnier> Willow!
[20:27] <~Dan> (Howdy, KJ2!)
[20:27] <+AllenSaulnier> The Dark Crystal, Krull
[20:28] <+AllenSaulnier> Whether I am borrowing a piece of a monster in Skyrim and mashing it with a creature in Witcher 3 I will not out right copy and paste.
[20:29] <+AllenSaulnier> I know the community is a vast one and I am always searching for fan art, or custom monsters online. I will be utilizing aspects of what I find to make a colourful and interesting tapestry for the players to explore
[20:31] <~Dan> How do you stat out creatures in a way that will be usable in multiple systems?
[20:33] <+AllenSaulnier> That’s the tricky part. Fundamentally I am trying a few methods and working out a model that will be flexible. It might come down to gms having to massage monsters into their game of choice but I’ll figure it out. Indy filmmakers are adept at problem solving afterall.
[20:34] <+AllenSaulnier> I’m also open to feedback. I want to hear peoples thoughts.. so if people are liking one thing and not interested in others I would love to hear it.
[20:34] * ~Dan nods
[20:35] <~Dan> wb!
[20:36] <+AllenSaulnier> Sorry I popped offline for a second
[20:36] <~Dan> No problem!
[20:36] <+AllenSaulnier> Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts about what I’m doing?
[20:37] <~Dan> Does your setting include gunpowder?
[20:37] <+AllenSaulnier> Traditionally my worlds don’t. Historically gunpowder was a massive game changer. But again the gm can change anything she/he wants.
[20:38] * ~Dan nods
[20:38] <+AllenSaulnier> I really spend a lot of time thinking about impact throughout my worlds.
[20:39] <~Dan> It certainly sounds that way.
[20:39] <+AllenSaulnier> wars, famine, disease, religion. I always remind players how impactful religion would be on the masses. Imagine churches could cure disease. That’s a massive boon to the people. So churches would be so powerful.
[20:40] <~Dan> A very good point.
[20:41] <~Dan> Do you include any new classes?
[20:42] <+AllenSaulnier> I mentioned the Jedi, but for legal reasons I can’t actually include them in my game system. Or at least call them jedi. But I like the idea of a jedi like class. I have always been a fan of star wars.
[20:43] * ~Dan nods
[20:43] <+AllenSaulnier> I think as I develop the new rules system later I might think more about the classes but as it stands I have my hands full with maps, history and details.
[20:44] <~Dan> Oh, you’re developing a new rules system?
[20:44] <~Dan> (Howdy, Viktyr!)
[20:45] <~Dan> wb!
[20:45] <+AllenSaulnier> happened again. Sorry. I’m back
[20:45] <~Dan> No problem!
[20:45] <~Dan> So you mentioned a new rules system?
[20:45] <+AllenSaulnier> yes. I want to create a rule system that allows from constant growth and development of characters.
[20:45] <~Dan> Is that a separate project, or part of this one?
[20:46] <+AllenSaulnier> An easy system for advancement and progression in every category. A percentage based system, but that’s not for this project. That’s a few years down the line
[20:46] <+AllenSaulnier> I will be doing it for my group any way, just like Hiraeth. I just decided to share with the world. lol
[20:46] <~Dan> Gotcha.
[20:48] <~Dan> Does any one race have a monopoly on airships?
[20:49] <+AllenSaulnier> No. I looked back in history and quickly discovered that technology seems to reflect onto other nations rapidly.
[20:49] <+AllenSaulnier> cannon balls on pirate ships for example
[20:49] <+AllenSaulnier> when they got bigger and badder a year later all ships had them
[20:49] <~Dan> (Welcome to #randomworlds, Talus88!)
[20:49] <+AllenSaulnier> So I tried to do the same in my world with tech and designs there.
[20:50] <~Dan> Makes sense.
[20:50] <+AllenSaulnier> the maps and docs will be pdf
[20:51] <+AllenSaulnier> so you can use your laptop computer, ipad or even phone to run campaigns
[20:51] <~Dan> (wb, Talus88)
[20:51] <~Dan> That’s handy.
[20:51] <+AllenSaulnier> I love technology and I figured make it as easy for people as possible.
[20:52] <~Dan> Sure.
[20:52] <+AllenSaulnier> Also I may even make it so the world updates
[20:52] <+AllenSaulnier> So I will put out time stamped updates as my world evolves.
[20:53] <+AllenSaulnier> people can read current events, political changes etc. even have nations warring so outcomes to massive battles will change the world landscape
[20:53] <~Dan> Definitely ambitious. I admire that. 🙂
[20:54] <+AllenSaulnier> I know a lot of gms play in their own custom worlds, but as an answer to that I would say, how often have your characters traveled to different planes.
[20:54] * ~Dan nods
[20:54] <+AllenSaulnier> Imagine they need lore or to consult a sage on a different planet. Well Hiraeth could be that backup world
[20:54] <+AllenSaulnier> I know that most gms don’t have time to map out realms and dungeons and cities. So I hope people like the accessibility of this realm
[20:59] <+AllenSaulnier> So what do you all think? Is this something you would like. Or is there something I should rethink? I’m curious because I have never offered my world before.
[21:00] <~Dan> Hmm. Well, that’s hard for me to answer, because I’m not quite in the target market.
[21:00] <~Dan> That said…
[21:01] <~Dan> …it certainly sounds like it would be extraordinarily useful to a time-pressed GM who’d like to run a detailed world.
[21:02] <+AllenSaulnier> I thought so. Either way I am making the realm so if the campaign on Kickstarter doesn’t reach goal I will most likely find a way to offer it to people once it is done. I may not offer it in the same time frame that the kickstarter campaign will allow.
[21:03] <~Dan> (Howdy, Silverlion!)
[21:03] <+Viktyr> (I am regretting missing this one.)
[21:03] * ~Dan nods
[21:03] <+AllenSaulnier> Welcome Viktyr
[21:04] <~Dan> I’m a bit tapped out on questions at the moment… In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[21:05] <+AllenSaulnier> well. I think I’ve covered the module for the most part. I love Dungeons and Dragons. Have my whole life. My brother and I have been playing certain campaigns for years. one ran 10 years. Epic quests with world changing events.
[21:05] <+AllenSaulnier> I think that’s pretty common
[21:05] <~Dan> Sure.
[21:05] <+AllenSaulnier> being a fan has made this module so much fun
[21:06] <~Dan> Fun’s important. 🙂
[21:06] <+AllenSaulnier> Plus the fact that I plan on making it accessible I suddenly have to worry about every detail and make it great.
[21:06] * ~Dan nods
[21:07] <+AllenSaulnier> Every sentence, grammar etc. So that I think is the part that is new to me. My notes before were short and without punctuation occasionally. lol
[21:07] <~Dan> (Welcome to #randomworlds, Guest96!)
[21:07] <+AllenSaulnier> Suddenly spelling counts!!!
[21:07] <~Dan> Heh. 🙂
[21:07] <+Guest96> Hello chatters
[21:07] <~Dan> (Guest96: You can set your name with the /nick command; e.g., /nick Dan 🙂 )
[21:08] <~Dan> Well, thanks very much for joining us, AllenSaulnier!
[21:08] <+Guest96> What is this Skystone Guild about?
[21:08] <+AllenSaulnier> It was my pleasure. Thank you so much for having me.
[21:09] <~Dan> You’re very welcome. And don’t feel like you need to run off, either. You’re welcome to hang with us. 🙂
[21:09] <+AllenSaulnier> The Skystone guild is the most powerful guild in my realm.
[21:09] <~Dan> Standard reminder: Gratuities are welcome at (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/ 🙂
[21:09] <+Guest96> Is there alot of guilds?
[21:09] <+AllenSaulnier> It mines skystone which floats like the rocks on Avatar. It is put into buildings to make them larger, more extravagant.
[21:10] <~Dan> Now, if you’ll give me just a minute, I’ll get the log posted and link you. 🙂
[21:10] <+AllenSaulnier> It is also in armor and skyships.
