[19:31] <+ScottJones> Hi, I’m Scott, one of the writers for Quantum Black. In the Quantum Black setting, you play an employee of Quantum Black, on a secret team out to save the world from the rising tide of unimaginable horrors. Equipped with the best weapons, cutting edge electronics, and a collection of drones, you will board the corporate jet, track the monsters down, and save
[19:31] <+QBRon> Hi Ron from Ithaca NY. co-creator of Quantum Black
[19:31] <+ScottJones> the day. You’re prepared for anything—or so your bosses say. Quantum Black is a cinematic, story-driven game that is powered by the lightning fast rules of Exile Game Studio’s Ubiquity Roleplaying System. You can have hours of fun combatting cosmic horrors and still keep your sanity intact!
[19:31] <+QBRon> Scott is the other co creator.
[19:31] <+ScottJones> We’re currently kickstarting our second book, Dark Designs
[19:32] <+QBRon> We already funded and just passed our first stretch goal well on the way to the second.
[19:33] <+ScottJones> Dark Designs expands the world of Quantum Black, with more information on your parent organization, along with new equipment, character options, and rival organizations
[19:35] <+QBRon> dan?
[19:35] <+ScottJones> Any questions?
[19:36] <~Dan> Sorry, I was waiting for a (done) to give us the all-clear for questions.
[19:36] <~Dan> Forgot to ask if you’d reviewed the Q&A format. My bad!
[19:36] <~Dan> The floor is open to questions!
[19:36] <+QBRon> Sorry.
[19:37] <~Dan> No worries!
[19:37] <~Dan> What sort of info does the new book provide on the organization?
[19:39] <+ScottJones> Quantum Black, the patron, is subsidiary of a larger company called Quantum Black. We provide information on Quantum Black’s relationship with other subsidiaries of the parent corporation. We also provide information on Quantum Black’s various facilities and its various internal divisions
[19:40] <+ScottJones> We also cover how the various internal divisions work, whether gathering evidence, destroying it, performing research, etc.
[19:41] <~Dan> Did you mean to say that Quantum Black is a subsidiary of Quantum Black?
[19:41] <+ScottJones> No. Quantum Black is a subsidiary of a parent company, Quantum Integrated Technologies. Sorry.
[19:41] <~Dan> No problem!
[19:42] <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Walt!)
[19:43] <&Silverlion> (Hi Walt)
[19:43] <~Dan> How high tech is the company compared to the world at large in the setting?
[19:43] <+QBRon> It is several years beyond the average tech of other organizations
[19:44] <+QBRon> We designed it so that that Quantum Black can be placed in its own universe or fit somewhere in your existing universe
[19:45] <~Dan> That’s interesting. Has that been done, to your knowledge, and if so, how?
[19:45] <+QBRon> In playing this at home, Origins , and Gencon. i asked our players how they see the World of Quantum Black . THe answers were fascinating.
[19:46] <+QBRon> They varied from things like I use the Ubiquity setting , update with the rules and tech and organizations in the book .
[19:47] <+Catseye> hi
[19:47] <+ScottJones> Many people have used the rules for their own settings, such as Agents of Shield
[19:47] <+QBRon> They then add in QB (Quantum Black) as a patron in their games.
[19:47] <+ScottJones> Hi!
[19:47] <~Dan> (Howdy, Catseye!)
[19:48] <+ScottJones> One nice thing the game does add rules for modern day equipment to the Ubiquity system. No other games have gone beyond the 1950s
[19:49] <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Guest31!)
[19:49] <+QBRon> Others have latched on to the fact the company is profiting from missions and use Quantum Integrated Technologies as there main Patron… or Foe
[19:50] <+ScottJones> The new book will run approximately 64 pages. Unlike the first book, the new book will be full color
[19:50] <~Dan> Oh? That’s cool.
[19:50] <+QBRon> We are only doing color from now on.
[19:51] <+ScottJones> The Kickstarter edition of the book will be hardcover. The retail edition will only be softcover. So the Kickstarter is a chance to get the limited edition hard cover edition
[19:51] <+ScottJones> Backers of the kickstarter can pay extra to get a copy of the first book (our core rules) at a discounted rate.
[19:51] <+QBRon> Why? The depth and texture added to our artists images is fantastic
[19:51] * ~Dan nods
[19:51] <+QBRon> …in color
[19:52] <~Dan> Any chance of a reprint of the core rules in color?
[19:53] <+ScottJones> We’d like to reprint the core rules in color. One stretch goal in the kickstarter is funding to get the art colorized
[19:54] <~Dan> Cool.
[19:54] <+QBRon> I just checked we are $140 from our next strecth goal!!
[19:54] <+ScottJones> We’d upgrade any PDF copies to color for free if that happens
[19:54] <+QBRon> Our next goal is a well written Horrific scenario created by Alex Thomas called Trouble in Paradise. I had a chance to play it and I was on the edge of my seat in terror through-out . At the end of the night I was amazed that some of us survived. Your Quantum Black Operatives are faced with terrors that will test their spirit as well as their mental and ph
[19:54] <+Walt> Was the art for the first book originally in color, and converted to B&W for printing, or will the artist need to colorize it?
[19:54] <+QBRon> Your Quantum Black Operatives are faced with terrors that will test their spirit as well as their mental and physical prowess against an insidious foe.
[19:55] <+QBRon> The orignal art was in greyscale
[19:55] <+Walt> thanks
[19:56] <+ScottJones> So the art will have to be completely redone. There were over 100 pieces. Getting them redone in color will take a lot of work, and the artist deserves compensated
[19:56] <~Dan> Indeed.
[19:56] <+Walt> Absolutely
[19:56] <+Walt> Hence the stretch goal, I guess.
[19:57] <+Walt> Are you guys up for a fairly crunchy rules question?
[19:58] <+ScottJones> sure
[19:59] <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Guest64!)
[19:59] <+Walt> Cool. How is the Difficulty rating for a ritual used when casting it? I have been subtracting the difficulty of the ritual from the number of successes for each Ritual Magic check but I wasn’t sure if that was the correct method.
[20:00] <+Guest64> Ahoy!!!!! Nikolai here
[20:00] <+ScottJones> Walt, that is correct. It follows the rules for a Sustained Skill Check.
[20:00] <+ScottJones> You can always send rules questions to us on Facebook, or via email. We’re always happy to help
[20:00] <~Dan> (Howdy, Nikolai! You can set your name with the /nick command; e.g., /nick Nikolai 🙂 )
[20:00] <+QBRon> Great!!! Our Artist Nikolai is here! Yea!!! as guest 64
[20:01] <+Nikolai> fanx mate
[20:01] <+Walt> So, caster makes a check, subtracts the difficulty from the successes rolled, the results are added to the accumulated total. If it reaches the target, the ritual is cast, if the subtraction results in 0 successes, the ritual fails?
[20:01] <~Dan> (You’re welcome!)
[20:01] <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, CSPCyberSpine!)
[20:01] <+Nikolai> What time does this go until?
[20:02] <+ScottJones> Yes, Walt. That is exactly how it works. Don’t forget that each roll also takes time.,
[20:02] <~Dan> (Until 9:30 Central, officially.)
[20:02] <+Nikolai> OK
[20:02] <+Walt> Thanks Scott!
[20:03] <+CSPCyberSpine> ( howdy )
[20:03] <~Dan> Speaking of magic, what sorts of magical resources does Quantum Black have?
[20:03] <+Nikolai> Scott, looks like we are clear to launch the Spider team. I have the characters you ran at Origins; are those the ones you need drawn up?
[20:04] <+ScottJones> Quantum Black is still learning how magic works. It does have some researchers and some spell casters. IT also has a few artifacts it has picked up and is experimenting with. It has at least one research center that is exploring how magic works.
[20:07] <+ScottJones> Currently the game features ritual magic, which is fairly slow. Our third book will feature more powerful, faster magic
[20:07] <+QBRon> We focused on ritual Magic in the first book and it is a continually growing field of study.
[20:07] <~Dan> Ah, you anticipated my next question. 🙂
[20:07] <+ScottJones> Good to hear from you Walt
[20:08] <+WaltFromGencon> I’ve been running QB for my home group, and they’ve been loving it. I enjoy writing adventures, but it would be nice to have more than the one pre-written adventure, both to actually run and just as a sample. Any plans to have more adventures available, beyond the ones in the stretch goals?
[20:08] <+ScottJones> With each book, we’re trying to expand the world. Magic, Technology, creatures, organizations, will all advance and become more powerful
[20:09] <+ScottJones> We’re looking for people who want to write adventures. If you are interested, let us know. Also, our friends at Danger Magic are working on some adventures for Quantum Black that they intend to market and sell
[20:10] <+ScottJones> Danger Magnet, not Danger Magic
[20:10] <~Dan> Both are cool names. 🙂
[20:10] <+QBRon> We are looking at a night with Quantum Black . It will be a series of 2-4 hour PDF adventures and also working with Danger MAGNET
[20:12] <+WaltFromGencon> Great news indeed! I’ll touch base with you.
[20:13] <~Dan> Do you introduce new monsters in this book?
[20:13] <+ScottJones> WaltFromGencon, we’re looking forward to hearing from you, Glad to hear you and your friends love the game
[20:14] <+ScottJones> We introduce a few monsters. Each is tied to a new organization.
[20:14] <+QBRon> We are looking at a living beastiery
[20:14] <+QBRon> We are also looking at
[20:15] <~Dan> How are these monsters tied to organizations?
[20:15] <+ScottJones> We introduce servitor races of the organizations. One is a demonic children’s toy. Another is a parasite that burrows into you, mind controls you, and lays eggs in you. They eventually hatch, destroying the host
[20:17] <+WaltFromGencon> That sounds like a fun mission!
[20:17] <~Dan> Oh, so these are enemy organizations.
[20:17] <+QBRon> We try to make it fun and interesting!
[20:17] <+ScottJones> Yes, these are enemy organizations
[20:17] <~Dan> Gotcha.
[20:18] <~Dan> What enemy organizations do you introduce?
[20:18] <+QBRon> could be rivals. could be friends. It depends onhow you run your game.
[20:19] <+QBRon> We try to let you make it your world.
[20:19] <+ScottJones> Two of them are cults. First we have the misguided environmentalist Cthulhu-worshipping Church of the Starry Dawn. To provide a contrast to them we also include the nihilistic Unholy Order of the Infinite Hunger.
[20:19] <+ScottJones> Meanwhile, two new corporations are introduced to battle Quantum Black. Biosafe Technologies, who wish to twist the very DNA of humanity to serve the Elder Gods, and Wynne Intelligent Systems, a dark doppelganger of Quantum Integrated Technologies.
[20:21] <+QBRon> Think of the other organizations as existing side by side with Quantum Black and Quantum Integrated Technologies. Sometimes they clash , sometimes they cooperated to get to their own ends
[20:21] <~Dan> A dark doppelganger in what sense? They serve Mythos entities rather than oppose them?
[20:22] <+QBRon> Speaking of Wynne?
[20:22] <~Dan> Yes.
[20:24] <+ScottJones> Wynne unknowingly serves Nyarlathotep
[20:24] <+ScottJones> They have built what they think is an AI computer, but it actually is possessed by Nyarlathotep
[20:24] <~Dan> That can’t be good.
[20:25] <+QBRon> heheheh
[20:25] <~Dan> What do they think that they’re doing?
[20:25] <+ScottJones> They think they are making money
[20:25] <~Dan> Ah.
[20:26] <+ScottJones> They are a ruthless tech company. They knowingly work with Mi-Go, Elder Things, etc.
[20:26] <+ScottJones> They specialize in AI systems, self driving cars, intelligent agents, etc.
[20:26] <+ScottJones> Search engines
[20:26] <~Dan> So do they tinker with alien technology?
[20:27] <+ScottJones> Some. Also, Nyarlathotep is feeding them ideas, posing as an AI
[20:28] <~Dan> So do they have a tech edge on Quantum Integrated?
[20:28] <+ScottJones> Not necessarily
[20:28] <+ScottJones> Quantum Integrated also seems to come up with pretty innovating ideas
[20:28] <+ScottJones> innovative
[20:29] <+WaltFromGencon> Yeah, from similarly nebulous sources…
[20:29] <~Dan> Nodens?
[20:29] <+WaltFromGencon> And knowingly work with all sorts of Mythos creatures…
[20:29] <+QBRon> Hey Walt. What would you like to see in the Quantum Black Universe?
[20:30] <+ScottJones> Wynne’s motto is “Eliminating human error.”
[20:30] <+WaltFromGencon> More monsters – particularly non-Mythos monsters. Some of my adventures have involved more folklore type things, like the White Howler of Tennessee.
[20:31] <~Dan> What’s that? 🙂
[20:31] <+QBRon> I have the OHio grassmen already written up.
[20:31] <+QBRon> Wendigo is actually native american as well
[20:31] <+WaltFromGencon> That would be an excellent one – it could fill in for any Sasquatch type monster
[20:32] <~Dan> Ohio grassmen… Are those a regional bigfoot?
[20:32] <+WaltFromGencon> True, Wendigo would be good
[20:32] <+QBRon> Yes Ohio bigfoot
[20:32] <+ScottJones> We want to introduce many non-mythos monsters. My con adventures have dealt with the fey, with creatures of Inuit lore, and Lamashtu. They will all get written up and published.
[20:32] <+QBRon> Wendigo is in the first book
[20:33] <+QBRon> Walt we love your ideas. keep them coming.
[20:33] <+WaltFromGencon> The White Howler is also sort of bigfoot-like. Huge, carnivorous, stealthy.
[20:34] <+WaltFromGencon> I also had to write up Serpentfolk (which are mythos-related).
[20:34] <+ScottJones> I also once ran an adventure where they hunted the “Honey Swamp Monster” (an actual creature from folklore). They ended up fighting Deep Ones, but there could be a Honey Swamp Monster
[20:35] <~Dan> Honey Island Swamp Monster, isn’t it?
[20:35] <+ScottJones> Serpentfolk would be cool. I have always been fond of Derro as well
[20:35] <+QBRon> rugaroo ( horribly misspelled)
[20:35] <+ScottJones> Right, Honey Island Swamp Monster. It might be a Bigfoot. Or a Lycanthrope
[20:35] <+WaltFromGencon> Ghosts and vampires would be good too. Lots of folklore about them, and with the increasing power of magic, maybe some of it is coming to life.
[20:36] <+ScottJones> They are on my list.
[20:36] <~Dan> Magic is on the rise in the setting?
[20:36] <+ScottJones> Yes, magic is increasing. For reasons unknown to Quantum Black
[20:36] <+ScottJones> Old spells that didn’t work now work.
[20:37] <~Dan> Do you have a unified supernatural, or is it diversified?
[20:37] <+QBRon> This opens a lot of opportunity to grow the setting
[20:38] <+ScottJones> They are diversified
[20:38] <~Dan> So the Fey have nothing to do with the Mythos, in other words?
[20:38] <+ScottJones> That is largely correct.
[20:38] <+ScottJones> There could be occasional connections, but mostly diverse
[20:38] <+QBRon> We are exploring aspects of horror as well as the Mythos
[20:39] <+ScottJones> Part of our goal is goal is for people who want to run horror with Mythos will be able to do so. You can use the type of horror you want
[20:39] * ~Dan nods
[20:40] <+ScottJones> Our next book will probably focus on a new, more powerful magic system, magical artifacts, and many magical creatures, such as fey, devils, undead, etc.
[20:40] <~Dan> Going back to the organizations for a moment, under what circumstances would Quantum Black work with them? They seem pretty bad on the face of it.
[20:41] <+ScottJones> Some of the Organizations from the first book could be allies. In the second book, they are all pretty bad. Once Quantum Black understands them, they will not want to work with them.
[20:41] <~Dan> Ah, I see.
[20:42] <+WaltFromGencon> Even under the premise that “the enemy of my enemy is my ally”?
[20:42] <+ScottJones> It would be a short term alliance
[20:43] <+ScottJones> With sudden, inevitable, betrayal
[20:43] <+WaltFromGencon> Well, sure, like the USSR in WW2
[20:43] <+QBRon> The new book also has some new tools to help the operatives combat their foes.
[20:43] <~Dan> Can you give some examples of those tools?
[20:43] <+QBRon> Yup.
[20:44] <+QBRon> We introduce the vanquisher , a prototype rail gun
[20:45] <+QBRon> We define a clarify how drone technology can be used in the game.
[20:45] <+WaltFromGencon> Licks chops
[20:46] <+QBRon> We allow players / GM drones of their own as well.
[20:46] <+ScottJones> We also introduce the glitter grenade, which makes it more difficult for stealthy creatures to hide, and might make invisible creatures easier to detect.
[20:46] <+QBRon> okay build drones of their own
[20:46] <+QBRon> we have fun with Sta-PUT, a permeable quick hardening foam
[20:47] <+QBRon> We fully define some of standard utility vehicles used by Quantum black operatives.
[20:48] <+QBRon> THings like types of cages in the vans , how big are the planes and boats.
[20:48] <+ScottJones> We also have rules for gas weapons
[20:48] <+QBRon> We clarify moving target combat .. You know like drones vs drones
[20:49] <~Dan> You mention drones pretty prominently. What sorts of things can Quantum drones do?
[20:49] <+QBRon> We also realize that some players just want gun that does “X” damge at “Y” range. So we intorduce rules for generic weapons too.
[20:49] <+QBRon> THe drone is an extension of its operator.
[20:50] <+QBRon> Anythng the operator can do the drone can emulate to a degree.
[20:50] <+QBRon> YOU can customize them anyway you want
[20:50] <+QBRon> We offer ~10 premade drones for you to use right out of the box
[20:51] <+ScottJones> We introduce a whole system for designing drones. Lots of options. Ariel, aquatic, and ground drones
[20:52] <+WaltFromGencon> Glad to see the custom drone rules. Are any of the premade drones armed?
[20:52] <~Dan> Weaponized drones, I’m assuming?
[20:52] <~Dan> ^5 WaltFromGencon
[20:52] <+QBRon> yup.
[20:53] <+WaltFromGencon> Great minds…
[20:53] <+QBRon> We offer recon drones, utility, assualt as types
[20:53] <~Dan> Indeed!
[20:53] <+ScottJones> We have weapons for drones.
[20:53] <+QBRon> You can do anything you want on a drone… if you can build it
[20:54] <+ScottJones> I think the drone rules also set the stage to let GMs and players add their own customizations. The system is pretty simple and abstract. It is fast and easy to use
[20:54] <+WaltFromGencon> Yeah, weaponized drones could be a huge liability for an organization that’s trying to remain covert.
[20:54] <+ScottJones> We also have rules for jamming and hijacking drones
[20:54] <~Dan> Broadly speaking, how effective are purely technological weapons against the supernatural?
[20:55] <+QBRon> They canbe very effective. It is up to the imagination of the players
[20:55] <+ScottJones> Weaponized drones are generally reserved for assault teams. The main game features field teams that focus on investigations. They do not have weaponized drones. Those are saved for emergencies
[20:56] <+WaltFromGencon> Yeah, that seems best for Spider teams.
[20:56] <~Dan> Spider teams?
[20:56] <+ScottJones> How effective tech is depends on the horror. However, or goal was that against most creatures the players should have a chance to fight them.
[20:56] <+QBRon> We are featuring Drones in “Attack of the Drones” at Gencon
[20:56] <+ScottJones> Spider Teams are the nickname for Elite Assault teams. They are saved for emergencies
[20:57] <~Dan> Ah.
[20:57] <+WaltFromGencon> Will there be guidelines for designing missions for the spider teams in the new book?
[20:58] <+QBRon> Good question… No specific rules. But spider teams are sent in to clean up usually after a failed mission.
[20:59] <+ScottJones> Correction
[20:59] <+QBRon> A good example is in the first book if a party fails the scenario a spider team would be set in.
[20:59] <+QBRon> oops …
[20:59] <+ScottJones> The new book has guidelines for making Spider Team Missions. We also have guidelines for creating Spider Team characters
[20:59] <+QBRon> I mispoke.
[21:00] <+WaltFromGencon> Cool!
[21:00] <+ScottJones> Spider Team missions are very different from regular ones. More action, more combat]
[21:02] <+WaltFromGencon> Yep. “Not Certified for Use With Shoggoth” was my introduction to the game.
[21:02] <~Dan> Is Quantum Black a purely altruistic operation from Quantum Integrated Technologies, or do they actually turn a profit from Quantum Balck somehow?
[21:03] <+QBRon> Hey Walt if you are interested in creating a monster on the kickstarter, there is an External Security Director where you work with us to create a new monster.
[21:03] <+ScottJones> Not certified for use with shoggoth is always a fun game to run at cons. People love it
[21:04] <+WaltFromGencon> Ron, that’s tempting. A bit too rich for my blood, though. I’m merely an operative.
[21:04] <+ScottJones> Quantum Integrated Technologies would like Quantum Black to gather samples in the field of creatures and technologies. They want to research them so they can better fight them. But they also would like to monetize them
[21:04] <+QBRon> Glad to have you either way!
[21:05] <+ScottJones> Fighting horrors in expensive, and Quantum Black will hopefully lead to some profits. Plus, who knows what they might uncover? Perhaps Deep One biology holds a cure for a type of cancer?
[21:06] <+ScottJones> Of course, this sort of research can also lead to a lot of trouble
[21:06] <~Dan> Oh, that’s a creepy prospect. Harvesting Deep Ones to cure cancer.
[21:06] <+ScottJones> Who doesn’t want to cure cancer?
[21:07] <+QBRon> shoggoth… regrow limbs. The possibilities are endless.
[21:07] <~Dan> Heh. True enough.
[21:07] <+ScottJones> Seriously, one real question to the game is that players and their characters should be a bit nervous about Quantum Black. It may not be entirely good
[21:08] <+WaltFromGencon> Which is awesome.
[21:09] <~Dan> How aware is the general public about the supernatural?
[21:09] <+QBRon> we want players to enjoy a creepy evening stopping their favorite baddy. an maybe throw in some moral questions as well.
[21:09] <+QBRon> It depends if they have had an encounter.
[21:10] <+QBRon> Is that a rat or a zoog. Naw its a big rat … that level.
[21:11] <+QBRon> Quantum Black Operatives try to stem the tide of darkness before it rises too high.
[21:12] <~Dan> What about various world governments? How up to speed are they on what’s really going on?
[21:14] <+QBRon> The US Gov’t has a organization like Quantum Black that investigates things, This is defined in the first book.
[21:14] <+ScottJones> However, the US government at large does not believe the supernatural exists. This hamstrings the government agency quite a bit.
[21:14] <+QBRon> Quantum has been actively discouraged spreading into Europe by others ..
[21:15] <+ScottJones> Over time, the agency will evolve. It will eventually get a clue.
[21:15] <+ScottJones> Most other countries do not know the supernatural exists. Few people know, either
[21:17] <~Dan> In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[21:18] <+ScottJones> By the way, our website has a variety of downloads of player aids. This includes a quick reference for Ritual Magic, Character Creation, and Sanity: (Link: http://www.quantumblackgames.com/downloads.html)http://www.quantumblackgames.com/downloads.html
[21:19] <+QBRon> We are continually looking for new ideas and want to make Quantum Black as fun and interesting as possible.
[21:19] <+ScottJones> I’d like to note that the first chapter has a lot of information, including about possible secret projects Quantum Black is working on. It is also written as a “new employee orientation.” We had a lot of fun writing it from that point of view
[21:20] <+ScottJones> Of course, you “Orientation Leader” may not be exactly forthcoming
[21:21] <+ScottJones> Also, we introduce “Internal Security” for the first time. This division monitors employees (including the player characters) to make they are following the rules, not corrupted, possessed, etc. They are always watching and highly dangerous
[21:22] <+ScottJones> Thanks for having us on tonight!
[21:22] <+QBRon> Thanks Dan!
[21:23] <~Dan> You’re very welcome, guys!
[21:23] <+ScottJones> Take care. Hope to see you at Gencon!
[21:23] <+WaltFromGencon> Thanks guys, really enjoyed the chat!
[21:23] <~Dan> Usual reminder: Gratuities are welcome at (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/ 🙂
[21:23] <~Dan> Now, if you’ll give me just a moment, I’ll get the log posted and link you. 🙂
[21:23] <+QBRon> Anytime…..
