[19:31] <+Zoltan> Well, hello. my name is Zoltan Lečei and I’m a part of The Games Collective, a small game design team from Croatia
[19:33] <+Zoltan> In 2015 we successfully Kickstarted a game called Awaken – a dark fantasy rpg game with Slavic and Mediterranean influences
[19:34] <+Zoltan> In the meantime the game has been translated to Italian, and it’s in a process of preparation for other languages too
[19:34] <+Zoltan> Now we’re back on Kickstarter with a sourcebook called Awaken: The Blood of Salvora – it’s kind of a campaign setting sourcebook for the Awaken
[19:36] <+Zoltan> In the new book, we’re exploring the cities in their details, various nations, new character options, new antagonists, items, various new powers etc.
[19:36] <+Zoltan> And now I’m here to present the game and talk a little more about the game and our work
[19:36] <+Zoltan> (done)
[19:37] <~Dan> (Howdy, BenjWilliams!)
[19:37] <+Zoltan> Hello 🙂
[19:37] <+BenjWilliams> (Hey, folks)
[19:39] <+BenjWilliams> Oh, is there not a q&a tonight?
[19:39] <~Dan> (There is. I’m being distracted by IRL issues. 🙂 )
[19:40] <+Zoltan> It is, it’s only that I’ve just finished with the intro 🙂
[19:40] <~Dan> (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2084336794/awaken-the-blood-of-salvora-roleplaying-game)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2084336794/awaken-the-blood-of-salvora-roleplaying-game
[19:40] <+Zoltan> yup, that’s the game 🙂
[19:40] <~Dan> So can you recap what the game is about?
[19:42] <+Zoltan> Yes, well, Awaken is a dark fantasy RPG set on a continent of Salvora where eleven City States are united in a loose political Alliance
[19:43] <+Zoltan> In this world, some people are starting to change, gain new powers and abilities. This process of transformation is called the Awakening, while the people are called Vasalli
[19:44] <+Zoltan> The Alliance is a pretty unstable last couple of decades and perhaps the only thing currently holding it together is the return of the ancient enemy – Vargans
[19:45] <+Zoltan> The current Kickstarter aims to develop the setting futher and add more various items, character options, descriptions of these cities, npcs, powers and all the things these kind of sourcebooks contain
[19:46] <+Zoltan> (done)
[19:47] <+BenjWilliams> Thanks for recapping 🙂 what is the die system like? (If there is one?)
[19:48] <+Zoltan> No problem 🙂 we use d6 system of our own – characters have skills and abilities which expand the dice pool
[19:49] <+Zoltan> contests are made by rolling the dice from the dice pool and counting fives and sixes as points of success
[19:50] <+Zoltan> threshold is pretty low, with one or two points being enough for most of the actions
[19:50] <+Zoltan> but, ones deduct those points, so it’s not that easy as it sounds
[19:51] <+Zoltan> combat is a contested roll between the combat dice pools of the characters
[19:52] <+Zoltan> while players can decide how many dice from the pool will they assign to defense and how many to attack action
[19:54] <+Zoltan> characters calculate their final points, put them against the other character’s points – attack points are put against the defense points and every extra attack point is a hit point damage
[19:56] * ~Dan nods
[19:56] <+Zoltan> one round in combat consists of 5 phases where players decide upon their course of action and that’s about it regarding the system mechanic
[19:58] <+Zoltan> not much action this evening? 😀
[19:59] <+BenjWilliams> Who or what arw the Vagrans?
[19:59] <~Dan> What sorts of abilities do the Vasalli have, and what new abilities do you introduce in this supplement?
[19:59] <~Dan> (Sorry if I’m a little slow on the draw this evening. I’m feeling a little out of it.)
[20:01] <+Zoltan> the Vargans are creatures which plagued Salvora (the continent where it all happens) in the past after the discovery of a new mineral called “the Resin” – they are tall and skinny humanoids living in the subterranean network of tunnels. People of Salvora already had a full scale war with Vargans once before and it seems that it will happen again
[20:03] <+Zoltan> The Vasalli abilities are called Gifts – they are divided in 4 Gift Trees called Body, Mind, Illusion and Reality. Like the names suggest, every tree contains powers which influence one of those things
[20:03] <+Zoltan> for instance, Body gifts strenghten the body, will Mind gifts influence or manipulate the mind or senses
[20:05] <+Zoltan> In the new supplement we’ll be introducing at least two more trees which will contain forbidden Gifts with the possibility of adding an elemental tree
[20:06] <+Zoltan> while the original book had only Gifts as supernatural powers, we’ll be introducing Rituals, which can be used by both ordinary people and Vasalli.
[20:07] <~Dan> I see… so “fast magic” is the province of the Vasalli?
[20:08] <~Dan> As opposed to presumably slow Rituals?
[20:08] <+Zoltan> Sorry, could we put this on a small 5-7 minute time-out? My dog has to go out, she’s really pesky right now
[20:08] <~Dan> Sure!
[20:09] <+Zoltan> that’s correct, Gifts are fast, while Rituals take time
[20:09] <+Zoltan> ok, I’ll be back as soon as I can
[20:09] <~Dan> No problem!
[20:15] <~Dan> wb, BenjWilliams
[20:16] <+BenjWilliams> Thanks. Sorry my phone is ancient and glitchy. Ill be home ar my laptop soon :p
[20:16] <+BenjWilliams> Zoltan still on puppy break?
[20:16] <~Dan> Yup!
[20:17] <+BenjWilliams> Good. Didnt miss anything 🙂
[20:17] <~Dan> Nope! 🙂
[20:19] <~Dan> wb!
[20:21] <+Zoltan> back!
[20:21] <~Dan> (Howdy, crypto!)
[20:21] <~Dan> wb, Zoltan!
[20:21] <+crypto> (Hey, Dan!)
[20:21] <+Zoltan> thanks, sorry it took this long
[20:21] <~Dan> No problem!
[20:22] <~Dan> So you mentioned “forbidden” Gifts in the supplement… What sorts of Gifts are those?
[20:27] <+Zoltan> well – the Gifts are universally considered to be… well, a gift from the god Azimoth, one of the two gods of the dualism based mythology. These new gifts would be something considered a gift from Zimitra, other god which is kind of antithesis to Azimoth – so we’re talking about necromancy and gifts based on Corruption, a punishing consequence of using Gifts
[20:27] <+Zoltan> too much
[20:28] <~Dan> So generally the province of the Bad Guys?
[20:28] <+BenjWilliams> Are forbidden gifta still broken into 4 trees, like the regular ones?
[20:32] <~Dan> (Howdy, Le_Squide!)
[20:32] <+Zoltan> the main bad guys (Vargans) can’t use Gifts so it pretty much comes down to a choice among Vasalli
[20:33] <+Zoltan> Benji, no, there are only 2 forbidden trees for now, but we’ll see, the book is not complete yet, there are still some things to be written 🙂
[20:34] <~Dan> Given the lack of Gifts, how well do individual Vargans stack up against individual Vasalli?
[20:35] <+BenjWilliams> Can a Vasalli use both regular and forbidden gifts, or is it sort of a choice of picking which god youre gifted by?
[20:37] <+Zoltan> It seems I didn’t do a good job of describing Vargans 😀 They are very strong and dangerous, think something of a slender man meets Man Bat of batman comics 😀
[20:37] <+Zoltan> well, Vasalli slowly discover their potential after the Awakening, and some of them discover a potential for these forbidden Gifts -Gifts can be learned but most of the Vasalli have one tree they naturally excell at.
[20:38] <+Zoltan> It comes down to a choice which Gift tree will a Vasall pursue
[20:40] <+BenjWilliams> So is the danger of the Vargans mostly based in their larger die pools, then? Or do they also bring unoque abilities to the table?
[20:40] <+Zoltan> For instance, after Awakening a Vasall can suddenly hear other people’s thoughts, and they discover they can move things as well
[20:40] <+Zoltan> It comes down to pursuing one or both paths – it’s just that if a Vasall concentrates on one tree, they usually do better than if trying to pursue everything they can suddenly do
[20:41] <~Dan> What sorts of things can the Gift of Reality do?
[20:43] <+Zoltan> Mostly because of the larger pools, yes, but in the new book we’ll additionally expand Vargans including some of the new abilities we’ve prepared. The original Vargans are stealthy in addition to being tough. They communicate with high pitched screams which function as a radar in addition to their limited vision
[20:43] <+Zoltan> so they are pretty much dangerous, especially undergrounf
[20:43] <+Zoltan> underground*
[20:47] <~Dan> (Were you responding to my question, Zoltan?)
[20:48] <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Guest39!)
[20:48] <~Dan> (You can set your name with the /nick command; e.g., /nick Dan 🙂 )
[20:48] <+Zoltan> Reality Tree contains Gifts which mostly manipulate matter, so – psychokinesis, short range teleport, matter distorsion, force wave, but there is a Gift which allows attunement to the kind of a paralel world (through which the Vasall actually walks through while “teleporting”)
[20:49] <+Viktyr> Space Lord Mother Mother.
[20:49] <+Zoltan> something happened 😀
[20:49] <~Dan> (Howdy, Viktyr!)
[20:51] <+Zoltan> hmm, when I try the nick command, the chat returns to the choose your nick page?
[20:51] <~Dan> What can you tell us about the additional details of the setting?
[20:51] <~Dan> Really? That’s odd…
[20:55] <+Zoltan> Well, these Great Cities of the Alliance, as these city states are called, control the territories under their domain. Most of the cities rely on trading with other cities, but we have two main trading hubs, a smaller but tough desert city, mining city which has some subterranean districts, two militaristic cities, a city of knowledge etc.
[20:55] <+Zoltan> All of the Cities have at least one thing they are known for
[20:58] <+Zoltan> The territiories to the north of the Alliance are also inhabited, but Alliance has had strenuous relations with the North in the past.
[20:59] <+Zoltan> Couple of wars and frequent raids from the North forced Alliance to stand at ready at the borders and don’t let anyone through
[21:01] <+Zoltan> And there is a mysterious Western Empire (this is actually what the people from the Alliance have been calling them) which sometimes trades with sailors, but mostly keeps away from the continent of Salvora
[21:02] <+Zoltan> In all these wars agains the Northerners and Vargans, a key weapon have been Colossi
[21:03] <+Zoltan> Colossi are special creatures created through “Rites of Colossi” a ritual which makes Vasalli merge together into one big mound of flesh from which a Colossus grows
[21:05] <+Zoltan> These humanoids are from 50-200 feet tall, but the older Colossi have been even taller, 400 feet and more. Their intelligence is limited, but they understand orders and are completely obedient
[21:07] <+Zoltan> There has been only one occurence, so called “Day of the Colossi” when most of the Colossi went mad and began fighting one against other or even trying to eat their own flesh. After the day has passed, most of them ran away or simply lay down and became obedient again
[21:09] <~Dan> How does the game handle differences in scale (like, say, human vs. Colossus)?
[21:10] <+Zoltan> One of the dangers in the nature are so called “wild Colossi”. They come to life through something called wild Rites, where Rites of the Colossi happen on their own, with Vasalli feeling irresistible pull towards the gathering place
[21:11] <+Zoltan> If you mean combat-wise, generally people don’t fight Colossi, since turning a Colossus agains other City is something like using a nuclear weapon. And when a Wild Colossus appears, it’s usually time for running.
[21:13] <+Zoltan> But, in the new book (again with the new options 😀 ) there is a mechanics of controlling the Colossus, a system for Colossus vs. Colossus fight, and for a mass combat against Colossus
[21:16] <+Zoltan> So that’s about it, isn’t it? 😀
[21:17] <+Zoltan> I’d just want to add a special thanks to everybody who was involved in creation of the first book – i.e. the artists
[21:17] <~Dan> Is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up in the time remaining?
[21:19] <+Zoltan> Just this part about the artists – we’ve had a lot of the people complimenting us on the art, and I would like to say that we’re really picky about the illustrations, but the artists were patient, talented and skilled enough to be worthy of a special praise
[21:20] <~Dan> Your art is pretty darned good. 🙂
[21:20] <~Dan> Thanks very much for joining us, Zoltan!
[21:20] <+Zoltan> There are a lot of high quality young freelance artists out there, and I would recommend taking the time to explore it 🙂
[21:21] <+Zoltan> you’re welcome, thank you for giving me this opportunity 🙂
[21:21] <~Dan> Usual reminder to readers: Gratuities are welcome at (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/ 🙂
[21:21] <+Zoltan> Good night everybody!
[21:21] <~Dan> Now, if you’ll give me just a moment, I’ll get the log posted and link you!
