[19:36] <+Liz> Hi everyone! My name is Liz and I am the owner of Angry Hamster Publishing. I’ve done freelance work for a bunch fo companies – John Wick Presents, Magpie games, Third Eye Games, and Gallant Knight Games just to name a few. I was on RPGNet Chat a few years ago to talk about my game WITCH: Fated Souls and now I am back to talk about Familiars of Terra!
[19:37] <+Liz> The elevator pitch: Familiars of Terra is a tabletop roleplay game set in Terra, a fantasy world in which every person has an animal familiar. As a heroic Seeker you travel the lands with your familiar healing the devastation of a war which left nations scarred and people scattered. (done)
[19:38] <~Dan> Thanks, Liz! The floor is open to questions!
[19:38] <~Dan> What sorts of creatures are available as familiars?
[19:40] <+Liz> So we use the suffix -kin in the game to identify a normal animal as a familiar. You can have any type of animalkin you want as a familiar. Certain animals are more popular with certain nations, but there are always exceptions to the rule. Oh! And dinosaurs still exist in our setting so you can also have a dinokin 😀
[19:42] <~Dan> So you can have a T-rex familiar?
[19:42] <+Liz> Yup!
[19:42] <~Dan> Wow…
[19:42] <+Liz> You can even have a flying t-rexkin familiar if you wanted
[19:43] <~Dan> What sorts of special abilities can familiars have (aside from flight)?
[19:46] <+Liz> Oh so many things! We have 30+ Traits in the book and you can also make up your own. We’ve created anything from different colours (which link to special abilities) to familiars being able to walk in dreams, to throwing lightning bolts, having removable limbs…
[19:46] <+Liz> We wanted to make sure there were enough weird and fun options that everyone could get the familiar they want
[19:47] <+Liz> Admitedly one of my first familiars was basically just a unicorn/Pegasus 😛
[19:47] <~Dan> 🙂
[19:47] <~Dan> Are the PCs all human?
[19:48] <+Liz> Well you play two character actually human and familiar! But we don’t have any typical fantasy creatures (like elves in our game). Terra is kind of our world, but just slightly more fantastic!
[19:49] <&Silverlion> Do the charavcters have other magic abilities?
[19:51] <+Liz> Seekers (our word for human heroes) get things called Titles and Trophies – Titles bequeath Wisdom, which let people perform sometimes super human tasks like succeed where someone else would fail etc. Trophies are basically weird magic items that have spiritual power. But humans don’t have any direct magical powers
[19:52] <+Liz> If you want magical-like powers you’d have to look to familiars who can do things like heal and shoot lightening, but people in Terra consider this nature not magic.
[19:54] <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, GamingBallistic!)
[19:54] <~Dan> (Howdy, Viktyr!)
[19:54] <+Liz> Welcome 😀
[19:55] <+GamingBallistic> Hah! Didn’t realize it was your night, Liz!
[19:55] <+Liz> It is 😀

[19:56] <+GamingBallistic> this is where Liz graciously allowed me to interview her about Familiars of Terra
[19:56] <~Dan> Oh? Very cool!
[19:56] <+GamingBallistic> Video, MP3, and text transcript
[19:57] <+Liz> Yes, it was awesome! Thanks again for having me on Doug!
[19:57] <+GamingBallistic> Always a pleasure to talk gaming and Kickstarter
[19:57] <~Dan> Who (or what) is the opposition?
[19:59] <+Liz> In Familiars of Terra opposition can come from a lot of places. We have a shadowy nation called Plinth who lost the war and are really sore about it. Terra also has large swaths of land called the Badlands which were bombed in the war and then transformed into really terrible places – a lot of opposition comes from there as well. Finally, we have other (cont.
[20:00] <+Liz> villains through out Terra who are more mundane, but no less terrible like animal smugglers etc. A lot of opposition in FoT comes from your Seeker having to make tough calls and triumph over being faced with impossible situations. It’s a heroes story 🙂
[20:01] <~Dan> Hmm…. You said “bombed”. What’s the tech level of Terra?
[20:03] <+Liz> Terra has real world modern-day level technology, which is slightly better than what we have now. We took some fantasy allowances with things like mobiles etc. but other than that things are pretty much as they are here. I wanted a world that was familiar (harhar) for people to make the game easy to jump into.
[20:04] <~Dan> Can you give an example of how tech is slightly better?
[20:06] <+Liz> For example, almost every person in Terra has an item called a MD (Mobile Device) it’s a mix between a pokedex and pipboy. It allows the person to call, check email, etc. but also to scan animal and figure out if they’re animal or animalkin, track their familiar, and other cool things.
[20:07] <&Silverlion> Hrms. Interesting.
[20:07] <&Silverlion> Do people use kin to “duel” like -mon style shows?
[20:09] <+Liz> So, if there is a fight in Terra familiars fight rather than humans, because familiars are very protective over their humans and humans are pretty weak compared to familiars and all their abilities. But we don’t have things like gyms or other things like that, people don’t just randomly duel. As a Seeker you’ll find enough adventure I’m pretty sure on (cont.
[20:10] <+Liz> your downtime you won’t be looking for a fight (done).
[20:10] <&Silverlion> Cool.
[20:10] <~Dan> How intelligent are familiars?
[20:11] <~Dan> (Howdy, MonkofLords!)
[20:12] <+Liz> Very! They can’t talk how humans can, but animalkin and humans have a special bond they understand one another and animalkin grow far beyond what a normal member of their species would. Just like normally short lived animals (like a mouse) end up living the entire lifespan of their human companion.
[20:15] <~Dan> How do people form a bond with a familiar?
[20:17] <+Liz> Each person has a coming of age ceremony where they announce their gender to the world and also form a spiritual bond with their familiar. How spiritual your bonding is with your familiars depends on what nation you’re from. For example, most people in the nation Endrill believe when you meet your familiar you meet the other half of your soul so their bonding
[20:18] <&Silverlion> Does that include agender/gender fluidity possibilities?
[20:18] <+Liz> is very spiritual. Other nations like Inther, believe that your familiar is just a (very special) companion and therefore the bonding is more a celebration of a child becoming an adult rather than a spiritual affair. (don)
[20:18] <+Liz> (argh sorry for all the typos it is very early here)
[20:18] <~Dan> I take it that it’s not possible to have more than one familiar?
[20:21] <+Liz> Re: Gender – Yup, people decide whatever they want to be whether that’s male, female, gender neutral, or gender fluid. If someone wants to change they do. Gender isn’t an issue in Terra just like it isn’t for animal kingdom.
[20:22] <+Liz> Re: More than one familiar – Nope! You only get one. Nothing is stopping you from getting a bunch of other animalkin pets though!
[20:23] <~Dan> (Howdy, Catseye, and welcome to #rpgnet, Guest43!)
[20:23] <+Catseye> hi
[20:23] <+Guest43> How are you all
[20:24] <+Liz> Great, thank you!
[20:24] <~Dan> (Guest43: You can set your name with the /nick command; e.g. “/nick Dan” 🙂 )
[20:24] <~Dan> (Howdy, Monochrome_Tide!)
[20:26] <~Dan> Are there evil creatures in this setting?
[20:26] <~Dan> (Thanks, kelley!)
[20:26] <+kelley> Nice chat roon
[20:27] <+kelley> Always like all things gaming
[20:27] <~Dan> Awesome. I’m glad you like it.
[20:27] <~Dan> 🙂
[20:27] <~Dan> Right now we’re chatting with Liz here, author of Familiars of Terra: (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1568822309/familiars-of-terra-a-tabletop-roleplaying-game)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1568822309/familiars-of-terra-a-tabletop-roleplaying-game
[20:27] <+kelley> Always looking for people to join my FB group for online role playing
[20:28] <+kelley> Need a few players for my Monday night game
[20:28] <~Dan> Oh? Well, you can always find eager gamers here. 🙂
[20:28] <+kelley> Very good
[20:29] <+Liz> Yes, so we have creatures called hybrids and the vast majority are not nice creatures. They were formerly human/animal experiments during the war which went horribly wrong and they don’t like humans very much for obvious reasons. Also, one thing that is considered real in the setting are spirits – so we also have a version of evil spirits knows a ‘lesions’.
[20:32] <~Dan> (wb, Kelley!)
[20:33] <~Dan> What are lesions capable of?
[20:33] <+Liz> Can I ask a question (open to everyone) ? I’m always curious if you could have a familiar – what would it be and why? 😀
[20:34] <~Dan> Hmmm…
[20:34] <~Dan> I’m always terrible at questions like this. I’m horribly indecisive.
[20:34] <+Liz> Lesions are evil ghosts, they can terrorize people, attack them, haunt them, turn incorporeal – typical evil ghost things to be honest
[20:35] <~Dan> Maybe a winged grizzly. Because I have a soft spot for World of Synnibarr. 🙂
[20:35] <+Liz> That would be so cute O_O
[20:35] <+Liz> I mean technically you get two more Traits after wings so you can pick more!
[20:36] <+Liz> Like make it pink ^_^ or grow cool flowers out of its fur
[20:36] <~Dan> Well, in World of Synnibarr, winged grizzlies have laserbeam eyes, so…
[20:36] <+Liz> XD you could totally flavour one of your Combat Powers with that. We have a Power called ‘Burn’
[20:37] <~Dan> Well, there you go, then. 🙂
[20:38] <+Liz> It’s like a flying bear can either go the super adorable or super terrifying route
[20:38] <+Liz> I think with the laser beams it is probably terrifying 😛
[20:39] <~Dan> (Link: https://newtonrocha.wordpress.com/2008/10/27/posters-de-rpg-11-monstros-do-dd-1%C2%AA-edicao-tio-nitro-humor-nerd/)https://newtonrocha.wordpress.com/2008/10/27/posters-de-rpg-11-monstros-do-dd-1%C2%AA-edicao-tio-nitro-humor-nerd/
[20:39] <+Liz> O_O yup terrifying!
[20:40] <~Dan> Or: (Link: http://www.neatorama.com/2011/10/24/keep-alaska-weird/)http://www.neatorama.com/2011/10/24/keep-alaska-weird/
[20:40] <+Liz> Haha the second one is very Bob Ross paints Familiars of Terra ❤
[20:41] <~Dan> Ha! 😀
[20:41] <~Dan> “…And maybe right here we’ll paint a happy little FLYING GRIZZLY WITH LASERBEAM EYES…”
[20:42] <~Dan> But I digress, sorry…
[20:42] <+Liz> “I’m just gonna add another laser right there… and you use whatever colour you want… you decide that colour based on what feels right… and there you go”
[20:42] * ~Dan laughs
[20:42] <+Liz> Haha me too 😛
[20:43] <~Dan> So were familiars on the front lines of the war?
[20:44] <+Liz> They were along with their humans, humans went into the war too, they were familiar support! Just like a familiar wouldn’t let their human fight a human would never let their familiar go alone!
[20:45] <~Dan> (Howdy, DLB_Chuck!)
[20:45] <+DLB_Chuck> Howdy
[20:45] <~Dan> ( Liz, meet DLB_Chuck, author of horror/conspiracy game Don’t Look Back. 🙂 )
[20:46] <+Liz> (Hello :D)
[20:47] <~Dan> Were people chosen to fight on the front lines based upon the capabilities of their familiars?
[20:47] <+DLB_Chuck> hi Liz
[20:49] <+Liz> Hm, that’s a good question I haven’t really thought about that to be honest as it isn’t a big focus of the game, but if I had to spitball it I would say if there was a draft it would be done by familiar rather than human!
[20:50] <+Liz> That’s kinda a cool thought, never considered it 😀
[20:50] * ~Dan beams
[20:50] <~Dan> I mean, I can see spies being hired for their small, sneaky familiars, for example…
[20:51] <&Akyla> but at the same time spies are those that fit in so anyone with a very generic familiar
[20:51] <~Dan> So… a familiar familiar?
[20:51] <+Liz> Hahaha
[20:51] * &Akyla groans
[20:51] <~Dan> \o/
[20:52] <~Dan> Do you have a character sheet that we can see?
[20:53] <+Liz> There is an example in the quickstart: (Link: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/234696/Familiars-of-Terra-Quickstart)http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/234696/Familiars-of-Terra-Quickstart
[20:53] <+Liz> But I promised to reveal the pretty version tomorrow on the live character creation session I am doing on Kickstart Live sorry XD
[20:54] <~Dan> Let’s see here… Downloading…
[20:55] <~Dan> So there are five attributes?
[20:55] <~Dan> Agility, Awareness, Charm, Might, and Wit?
[20:56] <+Liz> Yes! Also – for anyone who doesn’t know I should say – Familiars of Terra uses cards instead of dice
[20:57] <~Dan> Can you describe the task resolution mechanic?
[20:58] <+Liz> For non-combat checks you draw a card from your deck and if it is equal to or lower than your Attribute it is a success
[20:58] <&Silverlion> Everyone has a deck of cards?
[20:58] <+Liz> For combat you and your opponent draw a card and whoever has the higher cards wins
[20:58] <+Liz> Yes!
[20:58] <&Silverlion> Hrms. Not my kind of mechanic. Alas.
[20:59] <+Liz> All checks are modified by different things like Traits, Titles, Trophies, and Powers. But the basic mechanics are as stated above
[20:59] <~Dan> So you add the attribute to the card in combat?
[20:59] <+Liz> Silverlion – That’s okay!
[21:00] <+Liz> Dan – No it’s just the cards plus any Powers you have. In Familiars of Terra we decided all familiars are created equal so even a tiny familiar has a chance of beating the bearkin with laser eyes
[21:01] <~Dan> Heh. 🙂
[21:01] <+Liz> Powers define the type of fighting style your familiar has – whether you’re a defensive player or offensive etc.
[21:03] <~Dan> Can you give an example?
[21:03] <~Dan> (And brb — please continue)
[21:04] <+Liz> Sure, for example you have powers that allow your familiar to discard cards, dig through your discard pile, etc. This would be a different build that someone who picks out Powers that allow them just to dealing as much damage as possible as quickly as possible by doubling card numbers etc.
[21:05] <+Liz> The idea is that Seekers can support one another in combat and set up their allies for success
[21:06] <&Silverlion> That’s at least an interesting perk in a card system.
[21:07] <+Liz> Yeah we wanted to get the more tactical feeling of card games you have like in MtG or Pokemon
[21:07] <+Liz> That’s part of the fun of playing with cards compared to dice
[21:08] <&Silverlion> Indeed. One of the reasons I like cards to be used as something other as straight dice replacements.
[21:08] <&Akyla> so it’s a mix between playing War and a deck building game
[21:08] <&Silverlion> You can put more information on a card for example.
[21:09] <+Liz> Akyla – Yup! Haha I was on a podcast a week ago and the host said the same thing ^_^ it’s very true
[21:10] <&Akyla> Interesting, i’m always up for trying a new mechanism
[21:11] <~Dan> What is the scope of the game’s bestiary?
[21:11] <+Liz> Akyla – Yeah! It’s a pretty simple system, but you add a lot of nuance through the different powers you choose and the fun in combat comes from playing tactical with your friends to win
[21:13] <+Liz> Dan – We have a NPC section with a few stat blocks and also a section on the animal kingdom. We don’t have a bestiary in the book, because it is so easy to stat up NPCs for FoT GMs can use one of the statblocks we’ve created and re-flavour it or just make their own in a jiffy
[21:13] * ~Dan nods
[21:14] <~Dan> In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[21:15] <+Liz> I think you’ve done pretty well asking questions actually 😀
[21:15] <+Liz> Thank you for having me here!
[21:16] <~Dan> You’re very welcome! Thanks for joining us at such a horrid hour for you!
[21:16] <+Liz> Hehe well doing this once a year isn’t so bad! Plus chatting is fun!
[21:17] <~Dan> Well, come by any time you like! We’re always open. 🙂
[21:17] <~Dan> Usual reminder: Gratuities are welcome at (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/ , for those so inclined. 🙂
[21:18] <~Dan> Now, if you’ll give me just a minute more, I’ll get the log posted and link you!
