[19:31] <+AnkurRPG> Hi everybody, I’m Chris Miller of Chris Miller Games (CMG)
[19:31] <+AnkurRPG> Last year I kickstarted a table top rpg called ANKUR
[19:32] <+AnkurRPG> it has been published by Ingram and is available at Drivethru, B&N and Amazon
[19:32] <+AnkurRPG> it has been nominated for a GAMA award for best RPG of 2017
[19:33] <+AnkurRPG> Now I’m creating a new suppliment for the core game that will focus on an ancient African setting
[19:33] <+AnkurRPG> (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1191819023/ankur-land-of-the-first-people-africa-setting-expa?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=ankur)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1191819023/ankur-land-of-the-first-people-africa-setting-expa?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=ankur
[19:34] <+AnkurRPG> the core game focused mainly on ancient Sumerian myth, and the new book will focus on African myth
[19:35] <+AnkurRPG> any questions?
[19:36] <~Dan> Thanks, AnkurRPG! The floor is open to questions!
[19:36] <~Dan> Can you give us an overview of the supplement’s contents?
[19:36] <+AnkurRPG> sure thing
[19:38] <+AnkurRPG> basically it will detail the 3 main city-states of ancient Mundwazi (Africa): Kumat (Egypt), Meluha (Ethiopia) and Zimbabwe (South Africa)
[19:38] <+AnkurRPG> inside there will be new character races, classes, weapons and skills
[19:39] <+AnkurRPG> new creatures like the grootslang, tokoloshe, nandi bear and popobawa etc
[19:40] <+AnkurRPG> you’ll be able to explore ancient mythological kingdoms like Punt & Ophir
[19:41] <+AnkurRPG> I want to mesh myth with real world culture and traditions to give an element of plausability
[19:42] * ~Dan nods
[19:42] <+AnkurRPG> because the game deals heavily with the ancient alien theory, Africa in this game will have a very Wakanda feel to it without actually ripping off any major elements of the marvel film etc
[19:43] <+AnkurRPG> many African myths (Egypt especially) are pretty wild on their own without further embelishment
[19:44] <+AnkurRPG> Characters from this source book will fit right in with the core ANKUR game but still feel very unique
[19:45] <+AnkurRPG> next?
[19:45] <~Dan> Are the same aliens from the main game the influences in Africa?
[19:46] <+AnkurRPG> yes, basically
[19:46] <+AnkurRPG> there are 6 alien races in the core game
[19:47] <+AnkurRPG> they run the gambit from albinos to dark-skinned asiatic gods, to giants, to greys, and even horned devils
[19:48] <+AnkurRPG> they will fit within the African mythologies pretty easily, as nearly every culture has some myth/lore of one or more of the alien breeds as gods or demons etc
[19:49] <+AnkurRPG> plus, the Sumerian kings list and that of Egypt are very similar and both point to god kings that rules tens or even hundreds of thousands of years ago
[19:50] <+AnkurRPG> The Sumerians say in their own creation myths that man was created and first inhabited south Africa…..not Sumeria
[19:50] <+AnkurRPG> so, there are common links that I can use to bridge the two regions
[19:51] <~Dan> Huh. That’s interesting.
[19:52] <+AnkurRPG> yeh, there are even quite a few language similarities between Sumerian and several African tongues
[19:52] <~Dan> You really did do your homework!
[19:52] <+AnkurRPG> I was recently researching Nguni stick fighting
[19:52] <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Mattcor!)
[19:53] <+AnkurRPG> the name for the fighting sticks in south African is “d’lala”, and in Sumerian a fighting stick is called: “Dalalah”
[19:53] <+Mattcor> Hi everyone. Just coming to hang out for a bit.
[19:54] <+AnkurRPG> hello
[19:54] <+AnkurRPG> 😀
[19:54] <~Dan> Cool, Mattcor! Pull up a virtual chair! Q&A in progress with AnkurRPG here. Want to post the link to your Kickstarter again, AnkurRPG?
[19:55] <+AnkurRPG> Do you like to play role-playing games Mattcor?
[19:55] <+Mattcor> I am both an avid player of rpg’s and also a designer of same.
[19:55] <+AnkurRPG> Cool
[19:55] <+AnkurRPG> :O
[19:56] <~Dan> Mattcor: Oh? You may want to set up a Q&A of your own, then! 🙂
[19:56] <+Mattcor> I believe I am slated for the Q&A tomorrow.
[19:56] <+AnkurRPG> lol
[19:57] <+Mattcor> So I just thought I would come and check out someone else’s before I am in the hotseat. 🙂
[19:57] <~Dan> Oh, hey, Matthew! Sorry, that didn’t click in my work-addled brain. 🙂
[19:57] <+Mattcor> No worries. My schedule has been pretty hectic lately too.
[19:57] <+AnkurRPG> I’ll have to check out yours tomorrow then
[19:58] <+AnkurRPG> so what’s next Dan?
[19:58] <+AnkurRPG> I know you got a list over there…..fire away
[19:58] <~Dan> Mattcor: Tonight’s Q&A: (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1191819023/ankur-land-of-the-first-people-africa-setting-expa?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=ankur)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1191819023/ankur-land-of-the-first-people-africa-setting-expa?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=ankur
[19:58] <~Dan> Does the tech level differ in Africa from that in Sumeria?
[19:59] <+AnkurRPG> Not really,
[20:00] <+AnkurRPG> like most of the game world there are places with relatively high tech and places with low tech
[20:00] <+AnkurRPG> Ku-Mat for example (Egypt) will have the highest tech level on the continent
[20:01] <+AnkurRPG> but Zimbabwe will also have its fair share of gold mining facilities and airships etc
[20:01] <+AnkurRPG> Meluha will be basically a large primal trading post and river port for transporting goods up/down the nile
[20:02] <+AnkurRPG> the average citizens will live in a bronze-age society but the big cities with lots of Nibru-ene residents will enjoy more tech
[20:03] <+AnkurRPG> there will be pyramids that produce free wifi electricity, airships, radios, laser guns etc
[20:03] * ~Dan nods
[20:04] <+AnkurRPG> those barbarians who live outside the cities and shun the gods, will use flint tools & weapons
[20:05] <~Dan> What keeps the barbarians from being completely overrun by the high tech folk?
[20:07] <+AnkurRPG> the high-tech folk don’t want to leave the cities for the most part. The aliens (gods) created the cities, supply the population with amenities like toilets and electricity (which only works inside the city walls)
[20:07] <+AnkurRPG> the wilderness is full of creatures and restless natives
[20:08] <+AnkurRPG> The aliens still run the show on most of the planet and aren’t interested in further colonization….yet
[20:08] <+AnkurRPG> they just want to make sure the spice flows …so to speak
[20:08] * ~Dan nods
[20:09] <~Dan> What are the new classes that you mentioned?
[20:09] <+AnkurRPG> well, I’m still developing them……
[20:11] <+AnkurRPG> I’m thinking of a type of traveling lawman…..and a variation of the ANKUR Irhandi class
[20:11] <+AnkurRPG> sorry, I was looking through notes to try to find the name of the African Irhandi
[20:12] <+AnkurRPG> no luck
[20:12] <~Dan> No worries.
[20:13] <+AnkurRPG> anyway, there is a traditional medicine woman who uses her powers to control the weather, and they commit ritual suicide at age 60 in order to become protection spirits
[20:13] <+AnkurRPG> i thought that sounded pretty damn cool and will be trying to incorporate it
[20:14] <~Dan> That does sound cool. Psionics in the game can do that sort of thing?
[20:15] <+AnkurRPG> well, the game already allows the control of clouds
[20:15] <+AnkurRPG> also characters can play ghosts in this game…..which get much better psionic powers
[20:17] <+AnkurRPG> You know, Sumerian mystics and Tibetan monks also had a practice of ritual suicide to become Shedu or spirit guardians
[20:18] <+AnkurRPG> this game has a very paranormal atmosphere to it
[20:18] <~Dan> Huh… Is this a long-time topic of study for you?
[20:18] <~Dan> (Howdy, Catseye!)
[20:19] <+AnkurRPG> Hello Cat
[20:19] <+AnkurRPG> yes, it is
[20:19] <~Dan> Very cool.
[20:20] <+AnkurRPG> I was an ancient history major in college, but I have been fascinated by the paranormal and occult all my life
[20:20] <+AnkurRPG> I lived in India for a while during my 20’s
[20:20] <+AnkurRPG> and used to be into “spiritualism”
[20:21] <+AnkurRPG> I was at one time a practicing Hindu and a budhist
[20:21] <~Dan> Both?
[20:21] <+AnkurRPG> I also formed a paranormal investigation group called S.E.T. a few years ago
[20:22] <+AnkurRPG> Society of Esoteric Teachings
[20:22] <+AnkurRPG> it fell apart after a few ghost hunts
[20:22] <~Dan> Did you have any luck?
[20:22] <+AnkurRPG> oh….both?….not at same time
[20:23] <+AnkurRPG> not really
[20:23] <+AnkurRPG> although I did have several undocumented encounters before I formed the group
[20:23] <+Catseye> It’s interesting. because I have done some work on a similar ancient mythological background. It hews close to some of my own writing.
[20:23] <~Dan> You’ve seen a UFO as well, IIRC?
[20:25] <+AnkurRPG> I saw a UFO close up….say 50 feet for about 3 minutes back in 1984…..afterwards, 4 black helicopters flew over and several military jeeps drove past me
[20:25] <+AnkurRPG> it was amazing and changed my whole world view
[20:25] <~Dan> I’d imagine so!
[20:26] <+AnkurRPG> I’ve also seen and interacted with several ghosts…..mostly as a child
[20:26] <+AnkurRPG> I was able to talk to them and get a non-verbal response
[20:27] <+Catseye> Well I find your RPG and setting interesting
[20:27] <+AnkurRPG> the house I lived in was very haunted…..old plantation house. One of my aunts was murdered in that house too. Her boyfriend cut her head off!
[20:28] <+AnkurRPG> we moved ofcourse
[20:28] <~Dan> Yikes. O.o
[20:29] <+AnkurRPG> yeh, still gives me chills…..I was 5 yrs old
[20:29] <+AnkurRPG> next?
[20:30] <~Dan> For those unfamiliar with Ankur, can you give us a refresher on the system?
[20:31] <+AnkurRPG> yeh, its core mechanic uses a single D12
[20:32] <+AnkurRPG> a player adds together their character’s skill number and stat number to form an “action potential number” or APN
[20:32] <+AnkurRPG> the idea is to roll this APN or less on a D12 to succeed
[20:32] <+AnkurRPG> a 12 is always a crit fail
[20:32] <+AnkurRPG> a 1 is always a success…but NEVER a crit success
[20:33] <+AnkurRPG> to score a crit, you have to roll your exact APN
[20:33] <+AnkurRPG> another popular aspect of the game is Karma points
[20:33] <+AnkurRPG> each player starts the game with 3 good karma points
[20:34] <+AnkurRPG> if you roll a failure….you can spend 1 good karma point to re-roll
[20:34] <+AnkurRPG> 2 good karma pts to auto succeed
[20:34] <+AnkurRPG> 3 good karma to auto crit
[20:34] <+AnkurRPG> However!
[20:35] <+AnkurRPG> for each good karma pt you spend, the GM gets 1 bad karma pt they can use to make you re-roll successes
[20:35] <+AnkurRPG> And…. if you die in this game, you can choose to continue playing as a ghost
[20:36] <+AnkurRPG> you get new abilities like: walk through walls, possession etc
[20:36] <+AnkurRPG> at low probability of success ofcourse….until you train
[20:37] <+AnkurRPG> that’s about it for the basics
[20:38] <~Dan> (Howdy, KJ2!)
[20:39] <+AnkurRPG> Hello KJ2
[20:39] <~Dan> How are adventures different in the Africa supplement?
[20:40] <~Dan> (brb — please continue)
[20:41] <+AnkurRPG> well, mostly the cosmetics of it all to be honest….but I think that can be said for any game really. I mean regardless of whether it’s D&D, Pathfinder, StarWars etc. most adventure plots revolve around very similar premises.
[20:42] <+AnkurRPG> That being said, there will be new creatures, new locales with new maps
[20:42] <+Mattcor> Are there any themes unique to the setting that may not be prevalent in the base game setting?
[20:43] <+Mattcor> For example does the spiritualism take a greater in the adventures?
[20:43] <+AnkurRPG> hmmm….it would be interesting to push myself in that direction a bit.
[20:44] <+AnkurRPG> the alien/gods of Egypt, much like those of Sumeria are at time very petty and argumentative, there are power struggles, but that isn’t really new
[20:44] <+Doctor> (I missed it didn’t I)
[20:45] <+Doctor> (oh, maybe not)
[20:45] <+AnkurRPG> some of the culture and new creatures may feel strange or unique to a player who is used to the same monsters all the time (goblins, orcs, dragons etc)
[20:45] <~Dan> (back, sorry)
[20:45] <~Dan> (Howdy, Doctor!)
[20:46] <+AnkurRPG> I think really that my main goal is to flesh out a continent and set of cultures that have rarely been fleshed out in rpgs
[20:48] <+AnkurRPG> I want to give players of African descent the ability to play a game where the heroes are relatable and represent their vision
[20:48] <~Dan> (Howdy, Le_Squide!)
[20:48] * ~Dan nods
[20:48] <+AnkurRPG> I have several players of color in my group and they are typically forced to play in a European setting
[20:49] <~Dan> Right.
[20:49] <+AnkurRPG> I want to give them a setting they can play in where they aren’t slaves or primitives
[20:50] <&Le_Squide> (Hey!)
[20:51] <+AnkurRPG> so, even though the basic plots or adventure scenarios might not change drastically from the norm, it will still be in a sense new to many people
[20:51] * ~Dan nods
[20:51] <+Mattcor> Do you think that there are pitfalls to using the real world and real cultures as the basis for your setting? How much poetic licence can you get away with in your opinion?
[20:52] <+AnkurRPG> that’s not to say that I want this game suppliment to be exclusively for black players…..quite the opposite, I want it to be “inclusive”
[20:52] <+AnkurRPG> oh, sorry….
[20:53] <+AnkurRPG> that’s a good question and one I’ve pondered
[20:53] <+Mattcor> Disclaimer: I ask because we have done similar things with our Dark Stars setting and I sometimes worry about liberties we have taken.
[20:54] <+AnkurRPG> I think it mattered less with the first book because practically no one practices ancient Sumerian religion or even is able to speak the language, so there is no one to offend….
[20:55] <+AnkurRPG> admittedly, I feel I have to be more careful with this African suppliment because there are people who still believe in these gods and demons
[20:55] <+AnkurRPG> I have tried to stay respectful and true to the supposed mythologies
[20:56] <+Doctor> I mean, there are aliens, yes?
[20:56] <+AnkurRPG> yes….the “gods” are all aliens with high tech or psionics that are mistaken as magic
[20:56] <+Doctor> Right, so, poetic license is pretty free
[20:57] <+AnkurRPG> but most African tribes believe their “gods” came from distant stars in boats that sailed the heavens
[20:58] <+Doctor> Right, so, you’re going to feature the Dogon, right?
[20:58] <+Doctor> And Sirius B?
[20:58] <+AnkurRPG> The Egyptian gods were also known as star travelers and had equipment and weapons that read like a starwars movie
[20:58] <+AnkurRPG> oh, yeh….it’s already mentioned in the first book
[20:59] <+AnkurRPG> All I do is write the mythologies as if they were true…..they already fit with my ancient alien concept
[21:00] <+Doctor> I am going to let you get through the Q&A before I hijack this into an ancient astronaut theory discussion 🙂
[21:01] <+Mattcor> I might stick around for that discussion. 🙂
[21:01] <+AnkurRPG> hahaha
[21:02] <~Dan> Do you include the Mokele-Mobembe (sp?)?
[21:03] <+AnkurRPG> yes, actually it is in the core rules book
[21:04] <+AnkurRPG> well, actually that’s called a Yarraba and is based on a plesiasuar ….so the mokele-mobembe would be a brontosaurus
[21:04] * ~Dan nods
[21:05] <+AnkurRPG> sure, I’ll include a specific creature for that.
[21:05] <~Dan> Oh, good! 🙂
[21:06] <~Dan> How does combat work in this system?
[21:06] <+AnkurRPG> I will also have skin-walkers, bat people, cat and/or hyena people, and a slew of other creatures
[21:06] <+Doctor> So… South African gold mines?
[21:06] <+Doctor> Dan’s q is more important
[21:07] <+AnkurRPG> similar to most rpgs there is an ambush/surprise phase, followed by initiative, and an individuals actions
[21:07] <+AnkurRPG> movement is not seperated
[21:08] <+AnkurRPG> you get a number of actions equal to your speed stat
[21:08] <+AnkurRPG> you can move 30 feet per move action or do one attack per action….in any combo
[21:09] <+AnkurRPG> conflict resolution is handled by the method further up the Q&A …..by rolling under your APN on a D12
[21:10] <+AnkurRPG> a target has 1 passive defense rating (PDR) per piece of armor worn
[21:11] <+AnkurRPG> if your attack roll was successful, and beats the opponent’s PDR, then you bypass their armor and do full damage to them
[21:12] <+AnkurRPG> if their PDR is higher than your to hit roll, then your weapon hits their armor and they subtract the armor’s soak
[21:13] <+AnkurRPG> there are lots of other rules and manuebvers etc like charges, reach, using stamina to get extra attacks etc.
[21:13] <~Dan> How is damage determined?
[21:14] <+Doctor> Also, what is the disincentive to just wear all the armor you can scrounge
[21:15] <+AnkurRPG> each weapon has a toughness number determined by several factors (material, length, weight) and that toughness number is subtracted as damage
[21:15] <~Dan> Do you use hit points? Wound levels?
[21:16] <+AnkurRPG> armor: you can wear a max of 11 pieces of armor total
[21:16] <+AnkurRPG> also, certain types of metallic armor subtract stamina points if you wear more than 5 pieces
[21:17] <+AnkurRPG> a character has a certain amount of stamina and wounds ….determined by their stats
[21:18] <+AnkurRPG> stamina is typically used for hand to hand damage, stressful situations, physical exertion etc.
[21:18] <+AnkurRPG> wounds are for serious damage like sword thrusts etc.
[21:19] <~Dan> In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[21:21] <+AnkurRPG> hmmm…..not really
[21:21] <+AnkurRPG> I think we pretty much covered everything
[21:21] <~Dan> Alrighty then!
[21:21] <+Doctor> On a scale of Zecharia Sitchin to “Knowledge of the Forever Time”, where do you place the ‘crankery’ level of the game?
[21:22] <~Dan> Gratuities are welcome at (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/ for those so inclined!
[21:22] <+AnkurRPG> the kickstarter for the new Africa setting suppliment to ANKUR the rpg is in its second week
[21:22] <+AnkurRPG> oh…wait…what? lol
[21:22] <+AnkurRPG> “crankery”
[21:23] <+Mattcor> I note that on your Kickstarter page you have art by Jason Juta. Having looked at his work on Deviantart I notice that his hand drawn maps are very nice. Are you getting him to do all your maps?
[21:23] <+AnkurRPG> it is very Sitchin ….maybe a little stargate…..a little John Carter from Mars
[21:23] <+Doctor> You know… ancient astronaut theory goes from “well that’s kind of plausible…” to “The Plieadians want to eat who?!?”
[21:24] <+AnkurRPG> hahaha
[21:24] <+Doctor> youve got the ancient astronaut theosophists, the ancient alien atlanteans..,
[21:25] <+AnkurRPG> yeh the ancient aliens show can be a bit too far out crazy at times…..no, my game keeps it serious, plausable and a little creepy
[21:25] <+Doctor> Anyway, as you can tell 1) I will be backing your project in about 30 seconds and 2) I’m up for collaborating any time 🙂
[21:25] <+AnkurRPG> about Jason Juta: yes he is brilliant, I have another “Map Guy” however, I may have Jason do everything….we’ll see
[21:26] <+AnkurRPG> Thanks Doc !!
[21:26] <+Doctor> Oh I was going way past the show… Youtube man… youtube is where the crankery is at
[21:26] <+Doctor> I need to finish my obligations to Savage Mojo and Nocturnal/Hardboiled/Gallant Knight, then I’d love to do the annunaki of mesoamerica… 🙂
[21:27] <+AnkurRPG> haha….I believe a lot of wierd stuff, but some of the crap they have on youtube makes me feel normal
[21:27] <+Doctor> Check out “Knowledge of the Forever Time”…it’s… yeah, Coast to Coast sounds like NPR compared to that
[21:28] <+Mattcor> Aren’t we all creatives and gamers here? We all believe weird stuff!
[21:28] <+Doctor> but it’s so well done… amazing production value.
[21:28] <+AnkurRPG> Actually, I plan on doing a Meso-America suppliment soon…..
[21:28] <~Dan> Oh, nice!
[21:28] <~Dan> Thanks very much for joining us, AnkurRPG!
[21:29] <+AnkurRPG> I want to do Meso-America, East-Asia, Thule (hollow earth) and India…..and ofcourse the Moon & Mars
[21:29] <+AnkurRPG> (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1191819023/ankur-land-of-the-first-people-africa-setting-expa?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=ankur)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1191819023/ankur-land-of-the-first-people-africa-setting-expa?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=ankur
[21:29] <+AnkurRPG> THANK YOU !
[21:30] <~Dan> If you’ll give me just a minute here, I’ll get the log posted and link you. 🙂
[21:30] <+Doctor> Vril in the lava tubes of Mars…
[21:30] <+AnkurRPG> there are Vril, yes
