[19:50] <+JohnPrescott> Hi All, I’m John Prescott, the head guy at Whispering Tree Press. We are a restart company that will be relaunching our rpg, The Chronicles of Ramlar RPG
[19:53] <+JohnPrescott> We are also adding in 3D printable miniatures with out line as well. (done)
[19:53] <~Dan> Thanks, JohnPrescott! The floor is open to questions!
[19:53] <~Dan> So the minis are specifically for Ramlar?
[19:55] <+JohnPrescott> yes, and no, all can really be used for any fantasy game. We will have stats for a bunch of different rpg games for our monsters…the player characters are pretty generic and can be used with any system.
[19:55] <+JohnPrescott> over 70% of our monsters are unique to our setting.
[19:56] <+JohnPrescott> done
[19:57] <~Dan> You’re printing the minis yourselves?
[19:59] <+JohnPrescott> no, our backers and in the future you can purchase the STL files to print them yourselves. We are looking at offering them up as prints, but that is a little way down the line. SLA printers are coming into the market place hard and heavy now and we wanted to be at the forefront with it. Just to be clear SLA is not like the filament printers you see everywhere
[19:59] <+JohnPrescott> these days, SLA uses resin so the detail will just blow your mind. They can print down to the width of human hair now.
[19:59] <+JohnPrescott> done
[20:00] <~Dan> That’s pretty impressive.
[20:01] <+JohnPrescott> yeah, it’s really neat to see how far tech has come with 3d printing now
[20:01] <~Dan> Can they print in color?
[20:01] <+JohnPrescott> you can choose a color yes, but not multicolored yet.
[20:02] <~Dan> Ah, I see.
[20:02] <+JohnPrescott> they have all different kinds of resins as well. castable resin, flexible resin, it’s crazy.
[20:03] <+JohnPrescott> you can see some samples of our mini’s on our Kickstarter we have going on atm. The mini’s pictured were printed off of a 3D STL that was done in the Zbrush program.
[20:03] <~Dan> Will you allow for customization?
[20:03] <+JohnPrescott> possibly in the future.
[20:04] <+JohnPrescott> technically yes, you have the STL file, if you know of a Zbrush artist he could theoretically alter the file to your choosing.
[20:04] * ~Dan nods
[20:05] <~Dan> What does STL stand for?
[20:05] <+JohnPrescott> HeroForge has the best customization out there atm…
[20:05] <+JohnPrescott> if you haven’t seen that site.
[20:05] <+JohnPrescott> it’s just a file extension for 3D files
[20:06] <~Dan> Ah, I see.
[20:06] <+JohnPrescott> I really don’t get too technical..i just make things look nice. =)
[20:06] <~Dan> 🙂
[20:07] <+JohnPrescott> Hero Forge will let you buy just the STL file when you design your mini and you print it yourself.
[20:07] <+JohnPrescott> or take it to a print service to get it printed for you.
[20:08] <+JohnPrescott> done
[20:08] <~Dan> So you’ll either sell the minis or the STLs?
[20:08] <+JohnPrescott> yes
[20:08] <~Dan> Gotcha. Sorry if I’m a bit slow this evening. Long day. 😉
[20:09] <+JohnPrescott> I hear ya, no worries there.
[20:11] <+JohnPrescott> I think everyone has had a rough day. =)
[20:11] * ~Dan chuckles
[20:12] <~Dan> Do you think offering 3D printed minis along with a game is the wave of the future in RPGs?
[20:12] <~Dan> (Howdy, DLB_Chuck!)
[20:12] <+DLB_Chuck> Howdy
[20:13] <+JohnPrescott> it might be, tabletop games are REALLY big atm…
[20:13] <+JohnPrescott> Hi there,
[20:13] <~Dan> (JohnPrescott, meet DLB_Chuck, author of the horror game Don’t Look Back.)
[20:13] <+JohnPrescott> although, ZBrush artists aren’t that cheap.
[20:13] <+DLB_Chuck> Sorry I’m late. Hope the Q&A is going well.
[20:13] <+JohnPrescott> hi! Nice to meet ya
[20:13] <+DLB_Chuck> Hi JohnPrescott
[20:13] <+JohnPrescott> We’re chugging on along…
[20:13] <+DLB_Chuck> Is there a link to your project?
[20:13] <+JohnPrescott> sure
[20:13] <+JohnPrescott> (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1206128347/whispering-tree-press-3d-printable-fantasy-miniatu?ref=creator_nav)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1206128347/whispering-tree-press-3d-printable-fantasy-miniatu?ref=creator_nav
[20:15] <~Dan> Does 3D printing make minis more affordable?
[20:15] <+JohnPrescott> it def does in the long run
[20:15] <~Dan> (Howdy, HigherGrounds!)
[20:16] <+HigherGrounds> (Hiya!)
[20:16] <+JohnPrescott> and it willl in the future prices will come down as with everything
[20:16] <~Dan> (JohnPrescott, DLB_Chuck, meet HigherGrounds, author of the RPG Warsong, among others.)
[20:16] <+DLB_Chuck> Hi HigherGrounds
[20:16] <+JohnPrescott> as a comparison, as of right now, the big baddy in our KS page…the Rocar cost (actual cost) 1.50 to print.
[20:17] <+HigherGrounds> (Howdy JohnPrescott! Hello DLB_Chuck as well!)
[20:17] <+JohnPrescott> Hi There! Nice to meet you!
[20:17] <+JohnPrescott> The dwarf about .75 cents
[20:17] <+DLB_Chuck> JohnPrescott: , did anyone ask what’s the difference between your minis and the kinds you can make with the plugin for DAZ 3D?
[20:17] <+JohnPrescott> no not yet.
[20:17] <~Dan> (HigherGrounds, DLB_Chuck is author of the horror game Don’t Look Back, and JohnPrescott is the author of the fantasy game Chronicles of Ramlar.)
[20:18] <+JohnPrescott> not sure what a DAZ 3D is..is it a filament printer?
[20:18] <+DLB_Chuck> I know yours are custom designs
[20:18] <+HigherGrounds> (I love horror games! And I love Fantasy games, too!)
[20:18] <+DLB_Chuck> It’s a 3D rendering program. Kind of paperdolls for making 3d images.
[20:18] <+JohnPrescott> horror writer here as well.
[20:19] <+JohnPrescott> oh, our’s are very high rez done in Zbrush
[20:19] <+JohnPrescott> you can print those though
[20:19] <+DLB_Chuck> They released a plug-in recently that works with a number of 3d printers. DAZ works interactively with Z brush. Many of the models (maybe most of the HD ones) are designed there
[20:19] <+HigherGrounds> I don’t know if it’s been asked, but how would one go about going from “I need a mini” to “I have a miniature in my hand!”?
[20:20] <+JohnPrescott> from an existing one or having one made as in designed
[20:20] <+JohnPrescott> and then printed?
[20:21] <+JohnPrescott> sorry, DLB, not really familiar with DAZ…
[20:23] <+DLB_Chuck> DAZ is similar to Poser
[20:23] <+JohnPrescott> oh, OK
[20:23] <+JohnPrescott> Dan, need a quick afk..need some water.
[20:23] <~Dan> No problem!
[20:24] <~Dan> Q&As are thirsty work! 🙂
[20:25] <~Dan> HigherGrounds: Were you talking about designing a mini from scratch?
[20:26] <+HigherGrounds> YesFrom design to finished product..
[20:28] <+HigherGrounds> I’m interested in figuring out how you even get a model designed, costs involved and then how that moves into “production.”
[20:29] <+JohnPrescott> k, back
[20:29] <+JohnPrescott> sorry for that..coughing fit
[20:29] <~Dan> wb!
[20:29] <+JohnPrescott> Thanks!
[20:30] <+JohnPrescott> you need to find a 3D artist first, they aren’t cheap first of all.
[20:30] <+JohnPrescott> you would not believe some of the prices I’ve gotten from people.
[20:31] <+JohnPrescott> you give them a design they work on it till you are happy. with it, then you go to service to get it printed or you print it yourself if you have a printer or if the 3D artist has a printer he prints it.
[20:32] <+HigherGrounds> What’s the average pricing you’ve seen from 3D artist for a model?
[20:32] <+JohnPrescott> if you looked at my KS link with the art that will be used as a guide, those cost anywhere from 350-500 a piece to get done.
[20:33] <+JohnPrescott> some high profile hollywood artists can charge as much as 4K a day! BUT that is Hollywood prices..the GOOD thing is that ZBrush is becoming very popular now with 3D printing so the prices will come down. it’s basically just aboutthe same as getting a mini down the traditional way, except no molds
[20:34] <+JohnPrescott> have to be made you send it to the printer and depending on the complexity of the model within hours you have a prototype in your hands.
[20:34] <+DLB_Chuck> Are there any issues with paint sticking to the printed minis?
[20:35] <+HigherGrounds> Awesome information, thanks.
[20:35] <+JohnPrescott> you know, I was worried about that, but man, the resin takes paint better than any plastic or metal I’ve ever painted on.
[20:35] <+JohnPrescott> anytime!
[20:37] <+DLB_Chuck> Have you tested them with many different STL printers? Any issues?
[20:37] <+JohnPrescott> now, with filament printers it’s REALLY taken off in the miniature gaming market….there have been a plethora of 3d printable terrain pieces done…
[20:37] <+JohnPrescott> none so far, we’ve printed ona form labs, kudo’s titan, Moai’s sla printer and wanahoo(sp) and no problems at all.
[20:38] <+DLB_Chuck> what’s the average print time like?
[20:38] <+JohnPrescott> and the Kudo3D Bean is being done this week, it’s the Titan’s younger brother.
[20:39] <+JohnPrescott> (Link: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bean-the-ultimate-consumer-sla-3d-printer#/)https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bean-the-ultimate-consumer-sla-3d-printer#/
[20:39] <+JohnPrescott> the bean is still on Indigogo…go there and look at some of the stuff it’s done…I’ve got 3 ordered. =)
[20:39] <+JohnPrescott> depends on the model…complexity…
[20:39] <+JohnPrescott> the dwarf took 2 hours to print.
[20:40] <~Dan> Really? Wow. O.o
[20:40] <+JohnPrescott> the rocar is in 3 pieces. and took 4 hours total.
[20:40] <+JohnPrescott> that can be altered as well …you can slow or speed up print time.
[20:41] <+JohnPrescott> this is relatively quick compared to a filament printer…
[20:41] <+JohnPrescott> some pieces on there can take up to 18 hours to print…
[20:41] <~Dan> Yeah, my ignorance is likely showing there. I have no idea how long these things take. 🙂
[20:41] <+JohnPrescott> or more.
[20:41] <+DLB_Chuck> how long has your kickstarter been up?
[20:42] <+JohnPrescott> it went live this Saturday.
[20:42] <+JohnPrescott> big ad push is coming this week.
[20:42] <+JohnPrescott> on all fronts.
[20:42] <+DLB_Chuck> where are you doing ads?
[20:43] <+JohnPrescott> everywhere i can
[20:43] <+JohnPrescott> lol
[20:43] <+DLB_Chuck> have you used ads before?
[20:43] <+JohnPrescott> Kudo3D is helping a lot, I’ve worked with them from the start on this.
[20:43] <+JohnPrescott> they will be helping advertise as well
[20:44] <+DLB_Chuck> cool
[20:44] <+JohnPrescott> this has been in process since oh lordy….last May
[20:44] <+JohnPrescott> some ads…FB really don’t work that well…
[20:45] <+DLB_Chuck> i’ve heard that from other people
[20:45] <+JohnPrescott> there are a plethora of KS ad service people out there with some stelllar records…as publicists…and surge gettes so they so call themselves…
[20:45] <+JohnPrescott> I may try one of them as well…
[20:45] <+DLB_Chuck> i haven’t heard anything positive from anyone who’s used any of them so far
[20:46] <+JohnPrescott> we are also going to be doing two figs during the KS as well..from design to printed. so youcan see the process.
[20:47] <+JohnPrescott> I got really lucky and found a Zbrush artist who fell in love with our game art and world…
[20:47] <+DLB_Chuck> that’s great
[20:47] <~Dan> You guys do feature some awesome artwork.
[20:47] <+DLB_Chuck> dan I agree
[20:47] <+JohnPrescott> we are also offering a ton of stuff other than the 3D mini’s. I tried to offer something for everyone.
[20:47] <+JohnPrescott> Thanks!
[20:48] <+JohnPrescott> We tried our best to get the best bang for the buck with our art.
[20:48] * ~Dan nods
[20:49] <+JohnPrescott> the great thing is that game art is now mainstream and a ton of people are doing it. therefore driving the prices down somewhat.
[20:49] <~Dan> Really? That’s interesting.
[20:50] <+JohnPrescott> oh yeah, just go to the artstation website and have a look around
[20:51] <~Dan> JohnPrescott: While you’re here, would you like to say a bit about Chronicles of Ramlar?
[20:51] <+JohnPrescott> (Link: https://www.artstation.com/)https://www.artstation.com/
[20:51] <+DLB_Chuck> you can get art for less but i think sometimes it comes with a compromise of quality
[20:52] <+FreeGamer> I have Chronicles of Ramlar!
[20:53] <+FreeGamer> I. Am. Not. Kidding.
[20:53] <+JohnPrescott> sure, well first it’s a fantasy RPG. =) I still think it’s one of the best systems out there..it give you total control of your character and their destiny, i.e. our Demeanor Theme cirlces…xp is thrown away so no more crunching numbers., and some of Tony Lee’s game mechanics are really neat and new to the table.
[20:53] <+JohnPrescott> Awesome!
[20:53] <+JohnPrescott> Thanks for getting it!
[20:54] <~Dan> So this is a new edition in the works?
[20:54] <+FreeGamer> Dude named Alva Hopkins turned me onto it. I got to play in a one shot he ran.
[20:54] <+JohnPrescott> the new re-launch will have over 150 new locales, a new playable race, more monsters, more professions, some new game mechanics, and some fine tuning to some of the old one.
[20:55] <+JohnPrescott> ah, in Atlanta at DragonCon?
[20:55] <+FreeGamer> Nah, dude lives one town over. We used to chill.
[20:55] <+JohnPrescott> ah ok, roger that.
[20:56] <+JohnPrescott> he ran our demo’s at DragonCon as well
[20:56] <~Dan> Will you be Kickstarting this edition?
[20:56] <+FreeGamer> I am not surprised. I feel secondhand famous now.
[20:57] <+JohnPrescott> yes, it’s in the present Kickstarter. =)
[20:57] <~Dan> Oh! I didn’t realize it was part of this Kickstarter!
[20:57] <+FreeGamer> A ks going on now? Link please.
[20:57] <~Dan> Like I said, long day…
[20:57] <+JohnPrescott> the KS is dubbing as a relaunch tool as well
[20:57] <+JohnPrescott> (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1206128347/whispering-tree-press-3d-printable-fantasy-miniatu?ref=creator_nav)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1206128347/whispering-tree-press-3d-printable-fantasy-miniatu?ref=creator_nav
[20:58] <~Dan> (Howdy, Vorthon!)
[20:58] <+JohnPrescott> you can even submit a monster for 1.00 and have it considered for publication, which mean, illustrated and added into the Ramlar canon.
[20:59] <+JohnPrescott> you also get 32 PAWNS for the dollar as well.
[20:59] <+JohnPrescott> =)
[20:59] <~Dan> (Howdy, WineDarkSea!)
[20:59] <+JohnPrescott> if we reach funding those 32 turn into 64, we are going ot offer the 3d art as PAWNS as well.
[21:00] <+JohnPrescott> and we have some awesome stretch goals in store as well…
[21:00] <~Dan> What makes the Chronicles of Ramlar setting stand out?
[21:02] <+JohnPrescott> it’s back history and pantheon..we have our God’s book waiting in the wings and man it is stellar…don’t mean to sound over the top, but it’s truly one of the best pantheons I’ve ever read…we had a few people help with it…there literally is WAR in the heavens…I can’t wait for people to see it.
[21:03] <+JohnPrescott> and our locales…some are just very unique and awe inspiring..that sense of wonder is just there when you go there…
[21:03] <~Dan> Example?
[21:05] <+JohnPrescott> one is the Valley of the rings…which is made by our Spirinari race….they can make this material and shape it to however they want….i.e. for armor, weapons, even their city is wholly made of it….and in this Valley there are hundres if not thousands of tall arches that they’ve made for the world…each one is different and each vary in size, but all are
[21:06] <+JohnPrescott> immense..imagine hundreds of St. Louis arches all with art sculpted on them….and then imagine hear voices as you go past them…..whispering tales and things of the past and possibly the future as you walk through them…
[21:06] <~Dan> Oh, very nice.
[21:06] <+JohnPrescott> =)
[21:06] <~Dan> That’s… dare I say it…
[21:07] <~Dan> …fiercely beautiful.
[21:07] <+JohnPrescott> I wish I could post a pic…the pic we have or their city is jaw dropping.
[21:08] <~Dan> You could post a link to a pic.
[21:08] <+JohnPrescott> here is a link to our FB page, I just posted a picture in the feed , it’s at the top.
[21:08] <+JohnPrescott> (Link: https://www.facebook.com/RamlarRPG/)https://www.facebook.com/RamlarRPG/
[21:09] <~Dan> You guys gave me a print of that at Gen Con back in the day!
[21:09] <+JohnPrescott> =)
[21:09] <~Dan> An Elven city, isn’t it?
[21:10] <+JohnPrescott> it’s still one of my favorite.
[21:10] <+JohnPrescott> no, the Spirinari city, Selani
[21:10] <+JohnPrescott> our race we made up for the world.
[21:10] <~Dan> What are the Spirinari like?
[21:11] <+FreeGamer> Man, this is getting me all nostalgic.
[21:11] <+JohnPrescott> hehe…
[21:12] <+JohnPrescott> they are very reserved at first…very honorable, but once they get to know you they open up and are really a great friend to have, Ramlar is their charge and they thrive to protect with all they can
[21:12] <+JohnPrescott> brb, water refill
[21:14] <+FreeGamer> Alva is also the one who introduced me to The Guild. And the IT Crowd. And The Whitest People You Know. Good times.
[21:19] <+JohnPrescott> back, probably the biggest thing in the relaunch is we are opening up Isidiria the forbidden elven land, two of our dark gods and lone Fetharn elf broke down the wards and no everyone is alerted on Eranon and it’s been a race to the new old world…one of our god’s is a HUGE worm thatjust devours everything and was loosed upon the land and wrecked major havoc
[21:19] <+JohnPrescott> along with the god of beasts…
[21:20] <+JohnPrescott> so it’s plenty of bounty to be had but danger, REAL danger is lurking everywhere there now.
[21:20] <~Dan> Hmm… JohnPrescott, would you like to set up another Q&A to cover Ramlar?
[21:21] <+JohnPrescott> sure! Just let me know when! Would love too!
[21:21] <~Dan> I know we did one in the past for the Pathfinder edition, but this is its own system, right?
[21:21] <+JohnPrescott> yes
[21:21] <+JohnPrescott> our A/B system
[21:21] * ~Dan nods
[21:21] <+JohnPrescott> plus we are adding in with our new playable race, a Shaman type magic. =)
[21:22] <+JohnPrescott> Wand to do it next Monday or what is best for you Dan?
[21:23] <~Dan> We can do next Monday, although I’m open this Wednesday and Thursday as well.
[21:23] <+JohnPrescott> hmm, Thursday sounds good.
[21:23] <~Dan> Any of those days would work for me.
[21:23] <~Dan> Thursday? Sure… I’ll get you on the schedule now while I’m thinking about it. 🙂
[21:24] <+JohnPrescott> k, let’s do Thursday then.
[21:24] <+JohnPrescott> wow, it’s 9:30 already, =)
[21:24] <+JohnPrescott> time flies when you’re having fun!
[21:25] <~Dan> Indeed!
[21:25] <~Dan> Think your partner will be able to make it on Thursday?
[21:25] <~Dan> Tony Lee?
[21:25] <+JohnPrescott> I can see…I will try my best,
[21:26] * ~Dan nods
[21:26] <+JohnPrescott> he’s very busy atm with a language translation job.
[21:26] <~Dan> Well, it’s an open invitation.
[21:27] <~Dan> And more generally, don’t be a stranger! You’re always welcome ot hang out with us here. 🙂
[21:27] <+JohnPrescott> roger that!
[21:27] <+JohnPrescott> Thanks again for the time tonight, it’s much appreciated!
[21:28] <~Dan> Standard reminder: Those wishing to contribute to my efforts can do so at (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/
[21:28] <~Dan> You’re very welcome, John!
[21:28] <~Dan> If you’ll give me just a minute here, I’ll get the log posted and link you!
[21:28] <+JohnPrescott> roger that! See you soon!
