[19:31] <+Jay-FeralGames> I’m Jay from FeralGames and I created the Zombie Squad
[19:32] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Hi all. I’m Ian Liddle. Owner at Applied Vectors ((Link: http://www.appliedvectors.com)www.appliedvectors.com) – I am responsible for creating the Savage Worlds version of Zombie Squad
[19:33] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> The Zombie Squad is a Sci-Fi RPG where you play as Ex Military Criminal Black Op Units, called Penal Squadrons, that are sent out on missions either too dangerous or too dirty for Earth’s Military forces. You are deniable and expendable and expected to accomplish your mission whatever it takes. With the skills and abilities to operate behind enemy lines
[19:34] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> or undercover on the many planets available to visit in the game. If you have ever wanted a game that mixes Star Wars, Aliens and Firefly and throws in a pinch of the Dirty Dozen and Inglorious Basterds then The Zombie Squad is the game you have been waiting for.
[19:35] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> (done)
[19:36] <~Dan> Thanks, guys! The floor is open to questions!
[19:36] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Forgot to say the Kickstarter link is: (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/applied-vectors/savage-worlds-zombie-squad)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/applied-vectors/savage-worlds-zombie-squad
[19:36] <~Dan> Ah, thank you!
[19:36] <~Dan> How would you describe the tech level of the game? Could you compare it to any well-known scifi movies, for example?
[19:37] <+Jay-FeralGames> Aliens/Star Wars/Firefly/Cyberpunk/
[19:38] <~Dan> That’s a pretty broad range. 🙂
[19:38] <+Jay-FeralGames> its Sci-Fi, that’s the beauty of it
[19:38] <~Dan> What’s the standard hand weapon? Energy or slugthrower?
[19:39] <+Jay-FeralGames> pulse rifles are a thing which are hard projectiles wrapped in energy, but their are cinder attachments etc which also add abilities to bullets
[19:40] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> For me Savage Worlds Science Fiction Companion (which we use in the game) feels quite Star Wars-ish – so I think thats the default for the Savage Worlds version, although some worlds will be lower (or even higher) tech
[19:41] <~Dan> I’m assuming there’s FTL?
[19:41] <+Jay-FeralGames> Not sure if Ian is using it but in the original some guns have AI at various levels
[19:41] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah, and hyperspace and jumpgates/wormholes
[19:42] <+FASATodd> How do people get around? Standard FTL? Also, how do ships figure into the game, is there a space combat component or is it more like Aliens, a way to get from action to action 🙂
[19:42] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Yes FTL and there are Robots/AI from sentient weapons and drones to large battlefield machines
[19:42] <&Silverlion> I like space battles wherever they get everyone involved.
[19:42] <+Jay-FeralGames> its more like aliens, action to action without all the boring technical bits
[19:43] <~Dan> I know GenoFoxx over there will ask if I don’t, so are there mecha?
[19:43] <+Jay-FeralGames> space battles will be a thing
[19:43] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah their are mecha
[19:43] <&Silverlion> yeah, giant robots?
[19:44] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> We do use the Savage Worlds Science Fiction Companion so there are pretty much all of the content from it rattling around in the Zombie Squad universe.
[19:44] <&Silverlion> Are these Prisoner brigades able to buy or earn their freedom?
[19:44] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah, their will be, maybe not in the core but in vehicles
[19:44] <+Jay-FeralGames> not really, they are officially dead
[19:45] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> There is no freedom or forgiveness in the Zombie Squad! You’re DEAD soldier! 🙂
[19:45] <~Dan> Are the PCs all human?
[19:46] <+Jay-FeralGames> they are in the core
[19:46] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> They are in the core book. The Aliens book will have rules for creating alien characters.
[19:46] <+Jay-FeralGames> but we just unlocked the aliens book so that has rules for aliens
[19:46] <~Dan> So there are aliens in the same penal system?
[19:46] <+Jay-FeralGames> no
[19:47] <~Dan> So how would they wind up on the Zombie Squad?
[19:47] <+Jay-FeralGames> these will be pirates etc more traditional sci fi careers
[19:47] <+Jay-FeralGames> they won’t, but they exist in the same universe
[19:48] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Zombie Squads can be required to work with Aliens like say to protect an ambassador or to help a pirate break into a facility for some reason beneficial to the human military
[19:49] <~Dan> I see…
[19:49] <~Dan> Are there NPC aliens in the core book?
[19:49] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> There will be yes
[19:49] <+Jay-FeralGames> plus during R&R the squads can do what they like regarding side jobs
[19:50] <~Dan> Really? What keeps them from just running off, then?
[19:53] <+Jay-FeralGames> well thats either upto the players or they have a a cyber implant that causes issues if they don’t report in
[19:54] <~Dan> (Howdy, Indi!)
[19:54] <+Jay-FeralGames> but the human race is a minority and unliked, their are not many places to hide
[19:54] <+GenoFoxx> So the Suicide Squad by way of Starship t
[19:54] <+GenoFoxx> roopers
[19:54] * +Indi waves
[19:54] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah or u could say escape from new york by way of aliens
[19:55] <~Dan> Humans are the minority? That’s interesting. What’s the majority?
[19:55] <+Jay-FeralGames> aliens
[19:55] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> These can range from cranial bombs, and explosive collars to a timer chip that stops their heart if they dont finish a mission in time etc several options will be presented in the core book
[19:55] <~Dan> Any aliens in particular?
[19:56] <+Jay-FeralGames> there are a number of races each control different systems, the Vrak C are like the UN so they probably dominate the most
[19:57] <+Jay-FeralGames> some races are outwardly hostile towards humans others tolerate them for business purposes
[19:57] <~Dan> Are humans at open war with any of them?
[19:58] <+Jay-FeralGames> they have been but now the Vrak C moderate, so wars break out but are monitored.
[19:58] <+Jay-FeralGames> the humans are basically refugees, they have their corner of space
[19:59] <~Dan> So humans aren’t on Earth anymore?
[19:59] <+Jay-FeralGames> no
[19:59] <+Jay-FeralGames> they all exist on a floating rock called the Hub
[19:59] <+Jay-FeralGames> and a few colonies and flotilla’s
[20:00] <~Dan> A floating rock? So… and asteroid? Or something else?
[20:00] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah a mined out asteroid, its like a vast floating city
[20:00] <~Dan> Ah, cool.
[20:01] <~Dan> What happened to Earth?
[20:01] <+Jay-FeralGames> no one remembers
[20:01] <+Jay-FeralGames> to some its a myth like the garden of eden
[20:02] <~Dan> So is there a year for the setting?
[20:02] <+Jay-FeralGames> not really, does it need one?
[20:02] <~Dan> Not particularly. Just curious. 🙂
[20:03] <+Jay-FeralGames> a date would mean nothing, without context and as earth dating is no longer used
[20:03] * ~Dan nods
[20:04] <~Dan> How well-supplied are the Zombie Squads?
[20:04] <+Jay-FeralGames> not very well at all
[20:05] <+Jay-FeralGames> but they can attempt to gain better gear or get it from black markets
[20:05] <~Dan> Are they allowed to loot their fallen foes?
[20:05] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> of course, individual teams perform side jobs which can net them enough cash to be very well equipped
[20:05] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah totally, and even if they weren’t they would, their criminals
[20:06] <~Dan> Well, I was just wondering what would happen if they returned to based with an alien Blasto 2000(TM) ray gun, for example.
[20:07] <+Jay-FeralGames> nothing really, as long as they don’t make it obvious. what ever gets the job done
[20:07] <~Dan> Gotcha.
[20:07] <+FASATodd> so what makes these folks criminals? are they pirates that got caught? political prisoners? space bikers?
[20:08] <~Dan> I vote space bikers.
[20:08] <+Jay-FeralGames> military prisoners
[20:08] <+FASATodd> cool 🙂
[20:08] <+FASATodd> well, not cool for them I guess
[20:08] <+Jay-FeralGames> well its better than a bullet in the head
[20:09] <+FASATodd> good point
[20:09] <+Jay-FeralGames> players can choose or roll for their crimes
[20:09] <~Dan> Do they roll for whether or not they actually did it? 🙂
[20:09] <+Jay-FeralGames> and either share it with the others or not
[20:09] <+Jay-FeralGames> thats upto the player
[20:10] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> .Humanity lives under martial law so anything can wind you up in military prison. Its up to you if they are actually guilty – but we all know prisons are full of the innocent :p
[20:11] <~Dan> Has martial law been the way of things for as long as anyone can remember?
[20:11] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah the council is made up of military and corporations
[20:12] <~Dan> (Howdy, Tsyklon!)
[20:13] <~Dan> Are the corporations all based on the asteroid?
[20:13] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah
[20:13] <+Jay-FeralGames> but they control the colonies, but the colonies want independence, so that’s a thing
[20:14] <~Dan> So does the Zombie Squad get to put the kibosh on any uppity would-be George Washingtons, then?
[20:15] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah totally
[20:15] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> or maybe aid someone to get rid of such a person
[20:15] <~Dan> (Howdy, NiTe!)
[20:15] <~Dan> Wow. Sounds potentially pretty dark.
[20:16] <+Jay-FeralGames> it has that potential if thats how you wanna play it
[20:16] <+Jay-FeralGames> one of the stretch goals was Cthulhu Vs The Zombie Squad so that’s pretty dark lol
[20:16] <~Dan> Oh? Have you met that one?
[20:17] <+Jay-FeralGames> yes
[20:17] <~Dan> Nice.
[20:17] <+Jay-FeralGames> nuke it from orbit 🙂
[20:17] * ~Dan chuckles
[20:17] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> I have a feeling that most games will start dark and serious like alien and wind up more like Guardians of the Galaxy (or the goonies in space knowiing some of the groups I have gamed with) 🙂
[20:17] <+GenoFoxx> If you stat it the players will find some way to kill it
[20:18] <+Jay-FeralGames> may even be a gaint mech that they can use to battle cthulhu
[20:18] <+GenoFoxx> or at least banish it for another millennium or ten
[20:18] <+Jay-FeralGames> giant mecha
[20:19] <+Jay-FeralGames> be like pacific rim in space
[20:19] <~Dan> It’s my understanding that Savage Worlds is known for slam-bang action. Is that the style of Zombie Squad, or do you tweak the rules to be any more or less gritty?
[20:20] <~Dan> (Howdy, jeffszusz!)
[20:22] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Fast, Furious Fun! is the way of it – there are some setting rules, including Blood and Guts, a variation of Gritty Damage and Jokers Wild.
[20:22] <~Dan> What’s the latter?
[20:24] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Jokers Wild? +2 actions to the player who draws a Joker and everyone gets a Benny
[20:24] <~Dan> Gotcha.
[20:25] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> We are of course open to suggestions, so why not pop over to (Link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheZombieSquadRPG/)https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheZombieSquadRPG/ join up and make your suggestions 🙂
[20:25] <~Dan> Cool. 🙂
[20:26] <~Dan> Do you include a bestiary of alien nasties?
[20:27] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah theirs a bestiary in the core and the dark space book is also filled with critters
[20:27] <~Dan> Is the Zombie Squad more likely to go up against sapient or non-sapient foes?
[20:28] <~Dan> How often do they go on “another bug hunt”, so to speak.
[20:28] <+Jay-FeralGames> both really, depends on the adventure
[20:28] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> I guess that depends on your Gamesmaster
[20:28] <+Jay-FeralGames> ^
[20:28] * ~Dan nods
[20:29] <~Dan> How large is the bestiary in the core?
[20:29] <+GenoFoxx> In the grim, dark future….there are only corporations
[20:29] <+Jay-FeralGames> not sure at the moment waiting to see how much the artist creates
[20:30] * ~Dan nods
[20:30] <+Jay-FeralGames> GenoFoxx seems very likely in reality
[20:30] <~Dan> (Howdy, LW!)
[20:31] <~Dan> How badass are the PCs, relatively speaking?
[20:32] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Very 🙂
[20:32] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah
[20:32] <~Dan> Are they more beefed up than the standard starting Savage Worlds character?
[20:34] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Characters have a couple of base attributes, four skills and one edgs based on their chosen career option. After that they choose their Zombie Squad character type which uses a ‘Heroes Journey’ kind of method to create extra stuff for them, then they get to preform regular savage worlds character creation.
[20:34] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> so yeah. beefy
[20:35] <~Dan> Wow… All that stuff before standard character creation even begins? That IS pretty impressive.
[20:36] <+Tsyklon> Are the characters exceptionally good at crime or can they have super heroic powers?
[20:36] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> apologies for my spelling 🙂 yes it willmake them larger than life characters, but then you need to be impressive to be worth saving from the firing squad
[20:36] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> There are no super powers.
[20:37] <~Dan> No psionics?
[20:37] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> There are Powers as in the Savage Worlds Arcane Backgrounds – Giga Voodoo which is a psionic control over quantum energy to create some pretty wild things
[20:39] <~Dan> But not psionics in the official Zombie Squad setting?
[20:40] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> No
[20:40] * ~Dan nods
[20:40] <+GenoFoxx> Cyber-Witches and Techno-sorcerors?
[20:41] <+Jay-FeralGames> something like that
[20:41] <~Dan> Speaking of cyber, are there cybernetics?
[20:41] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Yep
[20:41] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Yes.
[20:41] <~Dan> How common?
[20:41] <+Jay-FeralGames> and biotech and alien tech
[20:42] <+Jay-FeralGames> pretty common
[20:42] <+Jay-FeralGames> at low levels
[20:42] <~Dan> At low levels?
[20:42] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Generally speaking, if its in the Science Fiction Companion – its in Zombie Squad. If it isnt in that book (like biotech) it’ll be added in one of the zombie squad books.
[20:42] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah
[20:44] <~Dan> I’m not sure I follow you… How is it more common at low levels?
[20:44] <+Jay-FeralGames> because they are cheaper and at high levels they become illegal
[20:45] <+Jay-FeralGames> levels of tech not character
[20:45] <~Dan> Oh! Okay, gotcha.
[20:45] <~Dan> How advanced is the biotech?
[20:46] <+Jay-FeralGames> quite advanced
[20:46] <+Jay-FeralGames> but again illegal at certain levels
[20:47] <~Dan> How transhuman are we talking?
[20:48] <+Jay-FeralGames> it will be all available its up to the player to use it or not
[20:49] <~Dan> How “sufficiently advanced” does the alien tech get?
[20:49] <+Jay-FeralGames> more advanced than the human stuff and stranger
[20:50] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> How transhuman? not as advanced as say Mindjammer – but they can add to a character (similar to cybernetics in the science fiction companion)
[20:51] <~Dan> I’m sorry — did you say earlier that space combat is a thing in the game?
[20:51] <~Dan> (Howdy, jeffszusz!)
[20:52] <+Jay-FeralGames> yeah
[20:52] <~Dan> How cinematic is it?
[20:54] <+Jay-FeralGames> not sure how it works with SW to be honest, but it will be pretty cool in the original
[20:55] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> The space combat will be as cinematic as Savage Worlds normally is – i.e. pretty, deadly and fast
[20:55] <~Dan> Well, I mean, does it feature swooping dogfights, or is it more like space subs launching nukes at each other from beyond sight?
[20:55] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> both 🙂
[20:55] <~Dan> Ah. 🙂
[20:55] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> but for me, more like the former.(as thats FFF)
[20:56] <~Dan> What sort of ship does the typical Zombie Squad get issued?
[20:56] <+Jay-FeralGames> very basic but you can add to it
[20:57] <~Dan> How would such a ship be armed?
[20:58] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Medium to Large hull size. The adventure in the core book will give an example ship, but in general the players and/or GM can create the ship with the science fiction companion.
[21:00] <~Dan> What other rules systems have been used for Zombie Squad?
[21:01] <+Jay-FeralGames> we have a D20 coming out and a Powered by the Apocalypse version
[21:02] <~Dan> What challenges have those two systems presented?
[21:03] <+Jay-FeralGames> well the game was already D20, but the PbtA version is a bit of a challenge but loads of fun
[21:03] <+Jay-FeralGames> to make
[21:04] <~Dan> (wb, Tsyklon)
[21:05] <~Dan> What would you say Zombie Squad offers that other scifi RPGs do not?
[21:08] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Larger than life kick-ass criminals toting huge guns and weird powers charging around the galaxy doing other people’s dirty work for them?
[21:08] <~Dan> Nice. 🙂
[21:08] <~Dan> What weird powers, though?
[21:09] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Giga Voodoo. psionic control over quantum energy (mentioned earlier)
[21:10] <~Dan> Oh! I’m sorry — I thought you were saying that was something you could add from the scifi supplement.
[21:10] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> It, in conjunction with cybernetic implants and an ‘amp’ allow you to use the Powers from Savage Worlds
[21:10] <~Dan> And that you said there weren’t psionics.
[21:11] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> sorry that should be ‘specific cybernetic implants’ – there arent psionics in the conventional science fiction sense – this is manipulating the raw energy of creation
[21:12] <~Dan> I see… How rare is that ability?
[21:13] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Well, its one of the six character choices for Zombie Squad character types, but in the world outside of that i’d have to get Jay to explain
[21:13] <~Dan> (Howdy, BPIJonathan!)
[21:15] <+Jay-FeralGames> its rare because its dangerous, but Ian’s using it differently to fit the SW mechanic
[21:15] <~Dan> What sorts of things can it accomplish?
[21:16] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> id say off the top of my head relatively rare – as unprotected use of giga-voodoo without the cyber implant(s) and the amp can cause ‘dissolution’ – as to what it can do …
[21:17] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Pretty much any of the Powers in savage worlds. There are some that arent usable like say shapechange etc but other than that its pretty open
[21:17] <~Dan> Hmm…. So when you said that there aren’t any superpowers, you were speaking in only the most literal sense?
[21:17] <~Dan> Because these sound like superpowers. 🙂
[21:18] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Thats right. No caped crusaders.
[21:18] <~Dan> Well, you can have superpowers without superheroes. 🙂
[21:19] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> true enough 🙂
[21:19] <~Dan> In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to mention?
[21:21] <~Dan> (Howdy, Doctor!)
[21:21] <&Doctor> (Q&A?)
[21:21] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> I guess I’d say that its shaping up to be an immense setting for Savage Worlds and we have a lot planned for it going into the future beyond the stretch goals we have met.
[21:21] <~Dan> (Yup. Tail end.)

[21:22] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> and we have a group on facebook for discussion of the game which is also where you can suggest the things you’d like to see (Link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheZombieSquadRPG/)https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheZombieSquadRPG/
[21:22] <~Dan> Thanks for joining us, guys! Especially at what’s an unholy hour for you, Ian! 🙂
[21:23] <&Doctor> Gah! I missed it.
[21:23] <~Dan> My tip jar, for those so inclined: (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/
[21:23] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Not a problem – its been a pleasure (and i can hear my bed calling as its approaching 3.30a am)
[21:23] <&Doctor> Love the art. Finger on the pledge button. Sell me on this in the 45 seconds you have left….
[21:23] <~Dan> If you can hang for just a moment, I’ll get the log posted and link you. 🙂
[21:24] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> If you have ever wanted a game that mixes Star Wars, Aliens and Firefly and throws in a pinch of the Dirty Dozen and Inglorious Basterds then The Zombie Squad is the game you have been waiting for.
[21:24] <+Ian-AppliedVectors> Larger than life kick-ass criminals toting huge guns and weird powers charging around the galaxy doing other people’s dirty work for them
