[19:05] <+James> Hi I’m James Gantry and I’m here with The Zombie Squuad
[19:05] <+James> Squad even
[19:07] <+James> The Zombie Squad is a Sci-Fi RPG where you play ex military prisoners dragged off death row to deal with suicide missions and basically all the worse jobs in the universe
[19:08] <+James> It is a Penal Battalion where every member is officially dead, and deniable
[19:08] <+James> hence The Zombie Squad0-
[19:09] <~Dan> (Just a reminder to give us a (done) when you’re ready for questions. 🙂 )0-
[19:09] <+James> yeah sorry
[19:09] <+James> done
[19:10] <~Dan> Thanks, James! The floor is open to questions!
[19:10] <~Dan> What system does the game use?
[19:11] <+James> At the moment it uses two system in two separate editions, the Directors Cut uses the original D20 and the Death Row Edition uses the Apocalypse Engine, we are adding to this the Savage Worlds system in the new year
[19:12] <~Dan> Is that D20 as in 3.x D&D, or is it your own system?
[19:12] <+JGray> So, zombie is not literal?
[19:12] <+JGray> More like a SF suicide squad/dirty dozen.
[19:12] <+James> its more like the old versionwhere you roll under
[19:13] <+James> no they are called the Zombie Squad because they are the walking dad
[19:13] <+James> dead
[19:13] <+James> so yeah yeah a Sci-Fi dirty dozen is a good description
[19:14] <~Dan> How high-tech is the setting?
[19:14] <+James> or Aliens mixed with Firefly
[19:14] <+James> the setting is pretty high tech with Cybernetics and Bio-tech
[19:14] <~Dan> (Howdy, Harrowed!)
[19:14] <+Harrowed> Evening folks
[19:15] <+James> we are also gonna be throwing in lliving ships, alien tech etc
[19:15] <~Dan> I was going to ask about aliens. I take it they exist in the setting?
[19:15] <+James> oh yeah
[19:15] <~Dan> (Harrowed: You’ve been here before, right?)
[19:16] <+James> in fact the £100 pledge allows the backer to create an alien race for the game
[19:16] <+Harrowed> Back in the day I spent a fair amount of time here
[19:16] <~Dan> (Thought so. Welcome back! I’ll PM you what’s going on at the moment.)
[19:16] <~Dan> Can the PCs be aliens?
[19:17] <+James> not in the main game, but we are planning on releasing a source bok where that will be possible
[19:18] <~Dan> How many alien races exist currently?
[19:18] <+James> at the moment their are 7
[19:19] <~Dan> Can you give us a quick overview of them?
[19:20] <~Dan> (Still there, Harrowed?)
[19:21] <+James> Well they range from races that are actively against humanity, to those that are indifferent, like the Vri-Cul, the Aliens are in a weird diplomatic time where one race overseas the others and makes sure they abide by the rules of conduct, so its a bit of a mess
[19:22] <+James> its hard to just overview them as they each have a rich background, but you get the less advanced and the more advanced, the war like and the business minded.
[19:22] <+James> done
[19:23] <~Dan> Do you have a character sheet we can see for the D20 version?
[19:24] <+James> well the original game is free to download off DTRPG, but we do not have a separate sheet
[19:25] <~Dan> No problem.
[19:25] <+James> we made the original when we first started making games and it wasn’t very well done to be honest, we were still learning at the time, which is why we want to re-release it
[19:25] * ~Dan nods
[19:26] <~Dan> Is it an attribute+skill system?
[19:26] <+James> yeah, it also has perks which the player earns as they go up levels, these perks gives them special skills, like fast reload or fast draw etc
[19:27] <~Dan> What are the attributes, and how broad are the skills?
[19:27] <+GenoFoxx> is there psionics?
[19:27] <+James> the original has had great reviews and we have had thousands of downloads for it, its worth checking out before we remove it
[19:28] <+James> we are considering psionics, but we do have giga-voodoo
[19:28] <~Dan> Giga-voodoo?
[19:28] <+GenoFoxx> giga-voodoo?
[19:28] <+GenoFoxx> jinx
[19:28] <~Dan> ^5
[19:28] <+James> (Link: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/172676/The-Zombie-Squad-Rpg?hot60=1&src=hgrs)http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/172676/The-Zombie-Squad-Rpg?hot60=1&src=hgrs
[19:29] <+James> yeah giga-voodoo is a cyber magic that allows the Witch the ability to control electronics and Cybernetics
[19:29] <+James> so they can enter camera’s or overload cyber implants etc
[19:30] <+GenoFoxx> ah technopathy
[19:30] <+James> re-code your cyberwear, even see through cyber eyes of others
[19:30] <+James> yeah basically
[19:31] <~Dan> (Howdy, Drew!)
[19:31] <+Drew> (Howdt, Dan!)
[19:31] <~Dan> (Howdy, jeffszusz!)
[19:31] <+GenoFoxx> or as Ghost in shell puts ……ghost hacking
[19:32] <+James> yeah ghost hacking would fit with the undead metaphor of the game
[19:32] <~Dan> What are the attributes in the d20 version?
[19:34] <~Dan> (Howdy, MonkofLords!)
[19:34] <+James> do you mean stats
[19:34] <~Dan> Yup.
[19:34] <+James> Body, Dexterity, Mind, Move and will
[19:35] <~Dan> “Body” being strength and constitution?
[19:35] <+James> yeah basically
[19:35] <~Dan> And how broad are the skills?
[19:36] <+James> actually the game uses the statistics as hitpoints, so if you are hit in the body, body is effected, hit in the head, mind is effected
[19:37] <~Dan> Interesting approach.
[19:37] <+James> The skills are pretty standard for a Sci-Fi game to be honest
[19:39] <+James> Each skill has a number of perks which shows how advanced you are with the skill
[19:39] <~Dan> Can you give an example?
[19:40] <+James> Yeah so Medical for example will have 3 specialisations First Aid, Psychology and Pharmacy, as you go up in rank in these specialisations you gain perks, so with First Aid you go from revive all the way up to surgery
[19:41] <+Longspeak> Time to slip into a phone booth and change.
[19:41] <+James> its a nifty system really
[19:41] <+James> people have described the game as pretty crunchy
[19:42] <+James> mainly because we based character creation on Traveller
[19:42] <+Teller> Can your character die before you finish rolling him up?
[19:43] <+James> no we didn’t go that far
[19:43] <+James> its simler in a sense that you roll for careers, events and promotions
[19:44] <~Dan> Is it a class system?
[19:44] <+James> also origin, this is something we have kind of done also for the character creation in the apocalypse engine version of the game
[19:44] <+James> I guess so, as your profession dictates skills to a degree
[19:45] <~Dan> How many professions are there?
[19:46] <+James> that depends which version, in the D20 its 4 in the PbtA its 6
[19:46] <~Dan> What are they?
[19:46] <+James> the Savage Worlds version will also have 6
[19:47] <+James> in the D20 they are Gunslinger, Booster, Fixer and Witch, in PbtA its Gunslinger, Booster, Fixer, Witch, Ronin and Cyborg
[19:47] <~Dan> What is a Booster?
[19:48] <+James> Its the Scout, Thief type character
[19:48] <~Dan> Gotcha. And the Ronin?
[19:48] <+James> they are Martial artists/melee experts
[19:49] <~Dan> Do you have to be a Cyborg to have cybernetics?
[19:49] <+James> no anyone can have cybernetics, just the cyborg has more
[19:50] <+James> plus during character creation you build the cyborg rather than have it go through origins and careers
[19:51] <+James> so basically we hope that players can build all kinds of cyborgs, which would be really cool
[19:52] <+James> and even choose their moves from other professions as well
[19:52] <+James> done
[19:52] <+Teller> As game creators in addition to setting and content creators, how are you approaching the very different design philosophies of d20 and Apocalypse Engine to create experiences appropriate to each system?
[19:53] <~Dan> Do you have any plans to incorporate the Cyborg and the Ronin into the d20 version?
[19:53] <+James> no not really, I mean we could I guess
[19:53] <~Dan> (Howdy, Lin_Chong!)
[19:54] <+James> we kinda want to keep the D20 as the original
[19:54] * ~Dan nods
[19:55] <~Dan> What appeals to you about the Apocalypse Engine?
[19:56] <+James> how versatile it is, the story telling part
[19:56] * ~Dan nods
[19:57] <+James> I just think it has a lot of potential and can be anything you want it to be
[19:57] <+James> plus it forces players to roleplay not just roll play
[19:57] * ~Dan nods
[19:58] <+xyphoid> which *world games are you basing this off
[19:59] <~Dan> Mechanically, what makes Zombie Squad stand out from any other scifi game?
[20:00] <+James> We have looked at a lot of ‘World games like Masks, Apocalypse World, Dungeon World, Uncharted Worlds, Legacy and City of Mists among others and we have taken a bit from each and added our own stuff
[20:01] <+James> The Zombie Squad is meant to be both horrifying and togue in cheek, anything is possible and characters should be allowed to play the game how they like
[20:02] <+James> we are planning on hit locations, for things like called shots and sniping, which is a bit different
[20:03] <+xyphoid> what harm mechanic are you using for the *world part? there’s a huge difference across those games and it affects the tone a lot
[20:04] <+James> yeah we are using a system very similar to uncharted worlds, we have armour which reduces the damage and then wounds are applied
[20:05] <+James> we have brace for impact which can cancel out wounds and medic for healing
[20:06] <+James> we also have a fear mechanic which works similar to the harm one
[20:07] <~Dan> What are Void Stalkers?
[20:08] <+James> well that’s the question, no ones knows who they are
[20:08] <+James> they hand out justice to those they feel have broken some code or other
[20:09] <+GenoFoxx> are you allowing for the inclusion of power armor or mecha?
[20:10] <+James> we are planning a vehicle book which will include mechs
[20:12] <+James> the beauty of the game is that we can add anything really
[20:12] <~Dan> Does the main rulebook include space combat?
[20:12] <+James> maybe, we haven’t decided yet
[20:13] <+James> we want to do them well so possibly not
[20:13] <+James> the vehicle book will have combat rules in it
[20:14] <~Dan> (Howdy, rpgresearch!)
[20:15] <+GenoFoxx> including the zombie squads fighting alt reality versions of themselves in order to determine which universe survives the World’s End in which reality is tearing itself apart unless on universe becomes prime?
[20:16] <+James> not sure where u are getting that from
[20:17] <~Dan> GenoFoxx is… different.
[20:17] <+James> ok
[20:17] <+GenoFoxx> Marvel, DC
[20:17] <+GenoFoxx> various anime
[20:18] <~Dan> Do you feature a bestiary of alien creatures?
[20:18] <+James> we do
[20:18] <~Dan> How many?
[20:20] <+James> in the D20 version their were only a few, but in the new edition we are hoping to include maybe a dozen
[20:22] <+James> it would be cool to add some monster maker in the game so maybe we could also do that
[20:23] <+James> done
[20:23] <~Dan> What’s standard for firearms? Slugthrowers or energy weapons?
[20:24] <+James> we have mainly slugthrowers, but there are a few energy type weapons like pulse rifles
[20:26] <+James> and some guns have both energy and projectile ability
[20:26] <+James> and some guns have various levels of AI
[20:27] <~Dan> AI guns?
[20:28] <+James> yeah
[20:28] <~Dan> How does that work?
[20:30] <+James> AI on guns go from low level grade 1 types, which will change clips for you if the weapon carries a spare, upto scanning rooms for threats, suggesting ammo types, overcharging energy rounds, disrupting security and other AI etc
[20:30] <+James> at grade 3 the gun has a personaility
[20:31] <+James> and have neen known to sulk if not used as they feel they should be
[20:31] <~Dan> wb, Silverlion
[20:33] <+GenoFoxx> behold the mighty gunsaber….Gram!!!
[20:33] <+James> the AI is a pretty cool addons
[20:34] <~Dan> You said the Ronin is a martial artist type, correct?
[20:34] <+GenoFoxx> and then Gram goes to berate you for your sloppy handling and technique
[20:34] <+James> Yeah Ronin are
[20:34] <~Dan> How effective is HTH combat?
[20:35] <+James> pretty effective, as they utilise the Damage Bonus
[20:35] <+James> where projectile weapons don’t
[20:36] <~Dan> Are there high-tech melee weapons?
[20:36] <+GenoFoxx> beam shurikens?
[20:36] <+James> plus the moves are pretty cool, I know Kung Fu! and Bladedancer are base moves that other moves link to
[20:38] <+James> yeah we will do high tech blades, we have the las knife, but we will add nanotech blades etc
[20:39] <+James> beam shurikens sound interesting
[20:40] <+James> done
[20:41] <~Dan> How cinematic is the game?
[20:41] <+James> not sure really, its not something we are actively trying to do
[20:42] <~Dan> Going more for gritty?
[20:42] <+James> yeah gritty would be better
[20:44] <~Dan> (wb, sendoshin!)
[20:45] <~Dan> Corporations are the government?
[20:46] <+James> yeah basically, kind of like today lol
[20:46] * ~Dan chuckles
[20:47] <~Dan> In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[20:49] <+James> The game is going to be awesome and if you want a Sci-Fi game where the missions will be insane on weird alien planets then The Zombie Squad will be the game to grab, it does not take itself to seriously and we are planning on expanding it to include everything you can imagine or want from a science fiction game
[20:50] <+xyphoid> what’s your GM toolkit like in tems of ‘how do i run this game and build missions’
[20:50] <+James> we listen to the community and we have even chatted to D.Vincent Baker on some of the things we are doing and he has fully endorsed each one, so its gonna be cool
[20:51] <+James> Its gonna be pretty standard, with emphasis on the fun aspect of the game
[20:52] <+James> we have studied a lot of the various PbtA games out there and we have learnt from them
[20:56] <~Dan> Thanks very much for joining us, James!
[20:57] <+James> no probs great to bbe here again
[20:57] <~Dan> As a reminder, my tip jar is here for those so inclined: (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/
[20:57] <~Dan> If you’ll give me just a moment, I’ll get the log posted and link you. 🙂
