[19:02] <+NoYJim> Hi Guys! I’m Jim and that’s Chip. We’re the guys behind Nights of Yore: Tabletop Role Playing streamlined on your Smartphone and TV.
[19:02] <+chip> Hi
[19:02] <+NoYJim> done
[19:03] <~Dan> Thanks, guys!
[19:03] <~Dan> The floor is open to questions!
[19:04] <~Dan> Is this a platform for any RPG, like roll20, or is this its own game?
[19:04] <+chip> It is its own standalone game.
[19:05] <~Dan> What’s the setting?
[19:05] <+NoYJim> We wanted to make a streamlined system to help move the game forward but still use d20 as a reference
[19:05] <+NoYJim> The setting is standard fantasy but we would eventually like to expand
[19:06] <+NoYJim> Down the road we intend for users to be able to create their own adventures, monsters, areas, etc. But that’s a ways out
[19:06] <+NoYJim> done
[19:06] <~Dan> So you include own adventures for now?
[19:07] <+NoYJim> A big part of NoY is that it creates a new game every time
[19:07] <+NoYJim> Chip?
[19:08] <+chip> The world is built dynamically, so it’s new everytime you play. We wanted to create a world that, whenever you play, it’s like experiencing something new, but with familiar mechanics
[19:09] <+chip> done
[19:09] <~Dan> Can you give a hypothetical example of how that might play out for a given player?
[19:11] <+NoYJim> So at the begining of the game the Storyteller (DM/GM) will answer a questionnaire about how long they want to play, how many players, etc. The game will then generate a timeline of ares and dungeon you will travel to. The Storyteller can then go in to each area and dungeon and add traps, treasures, NPC’s, Monsters, and even build battles ahead of timand edit
[19:12] <+NoYJim> (Link: http://gph.is/2aQFNri)http://gph.is/2aQFNri
[19:12] <+NoYJim> done
[19:13] <+NoYJim> That’s a GIF of the Dungeon generator creating new Dungeons on the fly
[19:13] <+NoYJim> Done
[19:13] <~Dan> (Oh, you guys don’t have to say “done” after everything you say — just after extended answers or whenever you think it’s not clear that you’re done. 🙂 )
[19:14] <~Dan> (Howdy, scya!)
[19:14] <+NoYJim> cool haha
[19:14] <~Dan> So the Storyteller sets up the confrontations and “turns loose” his creations?
[19:15] <+chip> basically, yeah
[19:15] <+chip> he can form his story around the world, or change the world to fit his story
[19:16] <+chip> then everyone else gets to dive in and play
[19:16] <+xyphoid> is the assumption it’ll be a dungeon crawl?
[19:16] <+NoYJim> The idea is you can create a story inspired by the timeline that is generated
[19:17] <+NoYJim> Should play out like a typical role playing game. Storyline areas, Dungeons etc. Battles will play out like a JRPG . Think Final Fantasy. This keeps things moving but maintains typical Tabletop Role playing storytelling
[19:17] <+NoYJim> I should clarify
[19:18] <+NoYJim> This is basically like a typical D&D or Pathfinder game
[19:18] <+NoYJim> DM uses a laptop
[19:18] <+NoYJim> Players use a phone or tablet
[19:18] <+NoYJim> TV is the tabletop
[19:18] <+NoYJim> Games play to completion in one sitting though
[19:19] <+NoYJim> And it’s easy enough for newbies to join in
[19:20] <+xyphoid> so the app has a full combat system built in?
[19:21] <+NoYJim> The Players app is essentially their Character sheet when held in upright then displays the tabletop when turned to landscape
[19:22] <+NoYJim> In landscape the can control their characters actions on their turn
[19:22] <+NoYJim> All tabletop actions play out on the tv but each player has control of their charater from their device
[19:23] <+chip> when in battle, they determine what their character’s action is, the target and the animation plays when their time is up
[19:23] <+NoYJim> yep! Like a Final Fantasy battle but each player controls their respective character
[19:24] <~Dan> Does the game allow for the GM to interact with the players, or is the GM’s involvement mostly setting up traps and combats?
[19:25] <+NoYJim> Just Like D&D or Pathfinder, etc. The DM runs the game
[19:25] <+NoYJim> We intend everyone to be in the same room, being guided, DM doing NPC voices, skill checks, etc
[19:26] <~Dan> Oh, I see.
[19:26] <+chip> flickering the light switches
[19:26] <~Dan> Heh. 🙂
[19:26] <+NoYJim> Later we will make it available online but for now LAN only
[19:26] <+NoYJim> LAN PARTY!
[19:26] <~Dan> Gotcha. I wasn’t clear on that point.
[19:27] <~Dan> Do you have a character sheet posted that we can see?
[19:27] <+chip> one thing we’ve been experimenting with is having the players connect directly to the hosts laptop, rather than the wifi network
[19:28] <+chip> oh, yeah, wait one… jim?
[19:29] <+NoYJim> Here’s a mock up of what we used at Gen-Con. The last page is the tabletop view you get when you turn your phone sideways.
[19:29] <+NoYJim> (Link: https://goo.gl/photos/cHghMTjoJ4RKMSgNA)https://goo.gl/photos/cHghMTjoJ4RKMSgNA
[19:29] <~Dan> Let’s see here…
[19:30] <+chip> don’t mind the art…
[19:30] <~Dan> (Howdy, KJ|Laptop!)
[19:30] <+NoYJim> Haha yes! All Art is just place holder
[19:31] <~Dan> What is the (virtual) die mechanic?
[19:31] <+NoYJim> We have an artist we have recently started working with though
[19:31] <+NoYJim> Ah yes
[19:31] <+NoYJim> So all math is based off of “rolling a d20”
[19:32] <+NoYJim> We will have the option of it showing on screen or just doing the math to keep things fast.
[19:32] <+NoYJim> Here’s a BIG thing we’re working on too…
[19:33] <+NoYJim> Chip and I are designing a d20 that will connect to your device so you can actually roll a real die. We plan on it being available for other games that wish to adopt it as well
[19:34] <~Dan> You can roll a real die and have the device read it?
[19:36] <~Dan> (wb, NoY, Ch3ip)
[19:36] <+NoY> Sorry guys, something… happened. but we’re back
[19:36] <+Ch3ip> Apparently, I had to log in again
[19:36] <+NoY> haha ok, np
[19:36] <~Dan> Did you see my question about the real die?
[19:36] <+NoY> yep, and yep
[19:36] <~Dan> Huh. I’m having a hard time visualizing that, but it sounds really cool.
[19:36] <+NoY> well
[19:36] <+NoY> it looks exactly like a d20
[19:37] <+xyphoid> do you have a skill system / task resolution mechanic?
[19:37] <+NoY> skill checks, yes. One moment
[19:38] <+NoY> (Link: http://gph.is/2cUHsvy)http://gph.is/2cUHsvy
[19:39] <+NoY> All stats will be available for checks
[19:40] <~Dan> So are there actual skills, or are skill rolls just based off of the attributes?
[19:41] <+NoY> For now just based of attributes. We want to keep it simple for anybody to play. All things streamlined
[19:42] * ~Dan nods
[19:43] <~Dan> Is it a roll-under or roll-and-add system?
[19:43] <+NoY> Roll and add
[19:44] <+NoY> DM’s may have to adjust their checks for our system
[19:44] <+NoY> We don’t plan on any leveling up and many upgrades to stats since the game is designed to complete in a night
[19:45] <~Dan> Does combat use the same task resolution system?
[19:46] <+NoY> Yep!
[19:46] <+NoY> I wanted to make a game where you only need a d20, another level of streamlining.
[19:46] <~Dan> Good man.
[19:47] <+NoY> haha excellent
[19:47] <~Dan> 🙂
[19:47] <+NoY> I dread the responses to that statement
[19:47] <~Dan> Why’s that? Have you gotten negative feedback on that?
[19:47] <+Ch3ip> die hard players
[19:47] <+NoY> Different strokes for different folks
[19:47] <+Ch3ip> pun intended
[19:48] <+NoY> bah Chip 1 up!
[19:48] <+NoY> well
[19:48] <+NoY> a lot of players seem frustrated that it’s not D&D or Pathfinder directly
[19:48] <+NoY> It’s not
[19:49] <+NoY> It’s a game your kid can play
[19:49] <+NoY> or you hardcore D&D friends
[19:49] <~Dan> Ah… Yeah, I can see that being a problem for some people.
[19:49] <+NoY> or your grandma
[19:49] <+NoY> It’s a one night game
[19:49] <+NoY> It can played anytime with whoever is available
[19:49] <+NoY> so it needs to be easy to pick up and just play
[19:50] <+NoY> Lots of dice is crazy for new players, scary even
[19:50] <+NoY> math is scary
[19:50] <+NoY> pencils can be scary
[19:50] <~Dan> Pencils are stabby.
[19:50] <+NoY> they’ve lead to many a mishap
[19:50] <+NoY> lead…
[19:50] * ~Dan nods sagely
[19:51] <+Ch3ip> agreed
[19:51] <+NoY> See
[19:51] <+NoY> I love role playing games
[19:51] <+NoY> I want everyone to play
[19:51] <~Dan> A noble goal.
[19:52] <+NoY> in this age of tech I really thought I could cut the fat
[19:52] <+NoY> make it accessible
[19:52] <+NoY> So anybody can see why we love it so much
[19:53] <+NoY> No body should quite their regular game for NoY
[19:53] <+NoY> But it’s perfect when your tank flakes
[19:53] <~Dan> Have you considered offering NoY as a regular game?
[19:53] <+NoY> regular?
[19:53] <+NoY> Nope, only awesome
[19:54] <+NoY> haha, sorry confused
[19:55] <~Dan> Heh. Well, I mean a pen-and-paper version using the NoY system.
[19:55] <+NoY> Oh yes for sure
[19:55] <+NoY> And maybe something a little more advanced
[19:55] <+NoY> We have lots of crazy ideas
[19:55] <+NoY> That is definitely in the works though
[19:56] <~Dan> Is this a class/level system?
[19:58] <+NoY> There are 8 races, 8 Classes, and 5 Alignments currently.
[19:58] <+NoY> No leveling, just better equipment
[19:59] <+NoY> there will be a single equipment slot and a single accessory slot.
[19:59] <~Dan> What are the races and classes?
[20:00] <+xyphoid> alignments? why?
[20:00] <+Ch3ip> races: dragoon, dwarf, belter-elf, elf, twally-elf, halflin, human, cambion
[20:01] <+Ch3ip> classes: fighter, wizard, warlock, rogue, hunter, knight, templar, bannerman
[20:02] <+Ch3ip> bear in mind these are working title. We do not want to step on anyones legal process
[20:02] <+NoY> The color of the armor will dictate their alignment.
[20:02] <+NoY> We want players to have to stick to correct role playing for their character
[20:02] <+NoY> That’s a fun part of it that DM’s can run how they like
[20:03] <~Dan> Does alignment have any mechanical effect?
[20:03] <+NoY> We’ll also have male and female of every character, no stat change though
[20:04] <+xyphoid> ‘correct role playing’? this game has required behaviour for alignments?
[20:04] <+NoY> no mechanical affect but we have considered adding static skill bonuses or abilities.
[20:04] <+xyphoid> what are the alignments?
[20:05] <+NoY> Correct role playing is up to the DM. I think it’s fun to punish a good character for doing something bad. Up to the DM though
[20:06] <+Ch3ip> lawful-good, good, unaligned, evil, chaotic-evil
[20:06] <+xyphoid> what kind of punishments? out-of-character or in-character?
[20:06] <+Ch3ip> you, as a player, have the choice to play your character however you like, but the alignment can give you room to play
[20:06] <+NoY> Bonus a chaotic player is great too
[20:07] <+NoY> Ch3ip smaked a weasel! # coins fell out
[20:07] <~Dan> Do you consider lawful-good and chaotic-evil as “extra” good/”extra” evil?
[20:07] <+Ch3ip> yay! coins!
[20:07] <+NoY> in this case yes~ish. Different I guess as oppsed to pure
[20:08] <+Ch3ip> xyphoid, again, the punishment is up to the dm
[20:08] <+NoY> or reward
[20:09] <~Dan> I’m assuming that halflins are halflings/hobbits… What are belter-elves and twally-elves?
[20:09] <+NoY> Belter is gaelic for better, twally is lesser. High-elves and Half-elves
[20:10] <+NoY> We went all Scotish on our naming theme.
[20:10] <+NoY> Also, don’t want to get sued. A lot of names may change
[20:10] <+NoY> to protect the innocent
[20:10] <+Ch3ip> or guilty
[20:10] <~Dan> Are cambions half-demons?
[20:11] <+NoY> BING!
[20:11] <~Dan> 🙂
[20:11] <+NoY> (Link: http://unnaturalworld.wikia.com/wiki/Cambions)http://unnaturalworld.wikia.com/wiki/Cambions
[20:12] <+NoY> We actually have put a lot of thought in to the world
[20:13] <~Dan> How do you distinguish between wizard and warlock?
[20:13] <+NoY> Wizard is straight magigy controller
[20:13] <+NoY> Warlock is your resident alchemist
[20:13] <+NoY> Warlocks get a bonus to Item usage too
[20:14] <+NoY> Potion might be 1.25x effective, etc.
[20:15] <+NoY> Hunters get a bonus to being snuck up on and rogues get a bonus to sneaking up on. Great for blasting through a dungeon
[20:16] <+Ch3ip> brb
[20:16] <+NoY> I’m still here
[20:17] <~Dan> Wait… It’s easier to sneak up on hunters?
[20:17] <+NoY> not opposite
[20:18] <+NoY> may have said that weird
[20:18] <+NoY> harder to sneak up on a hunter i.e. get back attacked or ambushed
[20:18] <~Dan> Ah, gotcha.
[20:18] <+NoY> If you have a rogue in your party it’s easier to back attack or ambush monsters
[20:19] <~Dan> What are knights in this context?
[20:19] <+NoY> Heavy armor tanks, not healy like a Paladin though
[20:19] <+NoY> Templars are your clericy dudes
[20:20] <+NoY> Bannerman are warlords, hypemen
[20:20] <~Dan> Hypemen?
[20:20] <~Dan> (Howdy, Zaleramancer!)
[20:20] <+Zaleramancer> (Hello!)
[20:20] <+NoY> Haste, Strength/Dex bonuses, row change
[20:21] <+NoY> Turn order is worth mentioning.
[20:21] <+NoY> Each player has a speed stat
[20:22] <+NoY> a player with a higher speed stat will go more often, may lap other players
[20:22] <+NoY> all indicated by a turn order bar at the top of the tabletop screen
[20:22] <+NoY> Center is who’s up now and next is to the right. Player who just went is to the left.
[20:23] <+NoY> After your turn bar slides left.
[20:23] <+NoY> DM can decide if this is visible or not
[20:23] <~Dan> (Howdy, Dirian!)
[20:23] <+NoY> And if you can see enemies on it or not
[20:26] <~Dan> How developed is the game’s setting?
[20:26] <+NoY> As in the world?
[20:28] * ~Dan nods
[20:28] <+NoY> OK here we go
[20:28] <+NoY> So
[20:28] <+NoY> imagine a world…
[20:28] <+Ch3ip> so, the dungeon generator will build random dungeons for you, and you can replace them as you go, as a DM
[20:29] <+NoY> ignore Chip
[20:29] <+Ch3ip> ignore ch3ip
[20:29] <+NoY> the world is turned on it’s axis
[20:29] <+NoY> what would be be the north pole is now facing the sun
[20:30] <+NoY> the south pole is facing away from the sun
[20:30] <+NoY> the world still rotates on the equator though, the area between the two poles.
[20:31] <+NoY> the pole facing the sun is always hot, it is called the Sun side
[20:31] <+NoY> the pole facing away is always cold and called the Star side.
[20:31] <+NoY> The equator is temperate and is called the Green.
[20:32] <+NoY> the Green rotates and is at a slight tilt so it fluctuates between day and night
[20:32] <+NoY> all elves and men live in the green
[20:33] <+NoY> Halflins live on the border of the Green on the Star side.
[20:33] <+NoY> Dwarves live in an ice castle on the far Star side
[20:33] <+NoY> Dragoons live on the border of the Green on the Sun side and Cambions in a glass castle on the far Sun side
[20:34] <+NoY> Traveling out of the Green is trecherous and may require special equipment or spells to protect the frail
[20:34] <~Dan> All the Dwarves and Cambions live in one castle for each race?
[20:34] <+NoY> Home base
[20:34] <+NoY> They branch out
[20:35] <+NoY> but this is a very clicky world
[20:35] <+NoY> Dwarves and Cambions are Ice and Fire resistant and Fire and Ice vulnerable respectively
[20:36] <+NoY> Halflins and Dragoons less so, but still
[20:36] <~Dan> Interesting… So Dwarves aren’t the experts at the forge in this setting?
[20:36] <+NoY> They’re still mechanically minded but cold as hell
[20:36] <+NoY> Very pale, gingers
[20:37] <+NoY> no souls
[20:37] <+NoY> I kid
[20:37] <+Ch3ip> they would still need massive fires, so there could be potential for forges
[20:37] <+Ch3ip> forgery
[20:37] <+Ch3ip> no, forges
[20:38] <+NoY> The Cambion and Dwarven castles both go under ground too, more moderate temps there
[20:38] <+NoY> The Dragoons and Halflins tend to be cave dwellers.
[20:39] <+NoY> Halflins are kind of like wildlings on GoT
[20:39] <~Dan> (Howdy, BlasterKyubey210!)
[20:40] <+NoY> Cambions and Dragoons have wings too. They can fly short distances
[20:40] <~Dan> Are there any big bad guys in the world?
[20:40] <+NoY> Diversity
[20:41] <+Ch3ip> like giant snow worms?
[20:41] <+NoY> Constantly at ends with the other races. Peace but fragile
[20:42] <+NoY> Cambions, Dragoons, and Belter Elves are all descendants of more ethereal beings.
[20:42] <+NoY> Humans most likely came from space a long time ago and watered down the races
[20:43] <+NoY> Leaves room for ancient tech too 😉
[20:44] <+NoY> The Moon is a Dragon egg. There’s a whole story of how it got there and why the world is turned the way it is
[20:44] <+NoY> The moon represents Chaos, it’s why the Green fluctuates
[20:44] <~Dan> Wow. Dragons must be pretty large.
[20:45] <+Ch3ip> space dragons
[20:45] <+NoY> Yep, space dragons
[20:46] <+NoY> ok so here’s the story
[20:46] <+NoY> A Space Dragon chose this world for it’s nest.
[20:46] <+NoY> At that time the world’s orbit was similar to ours
[20:47] <+NoY> then one day a human space ship came in to the wrong neighborhood of space
[20:47] <+NoY> the Space dragon was caught off guard and freaked out
[20:47] <+NoY> It pushed off the planet to fight the human ship
[20:48] <+NoY> in doing so it messed up the orbit and it’s egg departed in to a moon like orbit around the planet
[20:48] <+NoY> the Dragon and humans fought
[20:48] <+NoY> The Dragon was killed and drifted in to the sun
[20:48] <+NoY> But the humans crashed on to the planet and were never rescued
[20:48] <~Dan> Sheesh. Must have been a darned big space ship.
[20:49] <+NoY> More powerful than large, an ark of sorts though
[20:49] <+Ch3ip> or had really big guns
[20:50] <+NoY> The Cambions, Belter-Elves, and Dragoons were already there.
[20:50] <+NoY> When Humans arrived the Belter-Elves befriended them.
[20:50] <+NoY> Races mixed creating the other elves
[20:51] <+NoY> Halflins and Dwarves were mutations that evolved over time from living in the colder climates
[20:51] <+NoY> You guys had enough? haha
[20:52] * ~Dan chuckles
[20:52] <~Dan> How large of a bestiary does NoY have?
[20:52] <+xyphoid> so where’s all this setting mateiral – is there world desc info in the apps?
[20:52] <+Ch3ip> still working on the bestiary
[20:53] <+Ch3ip> it will be in the apps
[20:53] <+NoY> We plan on about 150 unique enemies
[20:53] <~Dan> In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[20:54] <+NoY> Also color variations
[20:54] <+NoY> An animated intro will likely tell the world story
[20:55] <+Ch3ip> we have a compendium that has all the reference material, including the bestiary and info about the world
[20:55] <+NoY> The game is still under developement and will be a while before we can unleash it on the world. But we’re doing our best to chip away at it. Pun intended
[20:55] <+Ch3ip> ha
[20:55] <~Dan> Heh. 🙂
[20:55] <+Ch3ip> ha
[20:55] <+Ch3ip> ha
[20:56] <+NoY> We plan on making the battle system next and releasing it as a stand alone game
[20:56] <+NoY> Arena is the working name
[20:56] <~Dan> Make sure you keep Chip happy.
[20:56] <+NoY> it will be for Android most likely and only as a beta
[20:56] <+NoY> Oh yes
[20:56] <~Dan> Things are tough when the Chips are down.
[20:56] <+NoY> hahaha
[20:56] <+Ch3ip> this will never end
[20:57] <+NoY> Arena will be online
[20:57] <+NoY> Form a party and battle other parties online
[20:57] <+NoY> I always wanted to do that in Final Fantasy.
[20:57] <~Dan> As always, my tip jar is here if anyone is feeling generous: (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/ 🙂
[20:57] <+NoY> 🙂
[20:58] <+Ch3ip> thanks for having us on
[20:58] <+NoY> Yes, thanks a ton!
[20:58] <~Dan> Thank you for joining us!
[20:58] <~Dan> I hope you’ll feel free to come by any time you like.
[20:58] <+NoY> We can answer any last questions if anybody has any
[20:58] <+NoY> For sure!
[20:58] <~Dan> If you’ll give me just a moment, I’ll get the log posted and get you the link.
