[19:12] <&GKG_Alan> Hi! I’m Alan Bahr, the founder and lead designer of Gallant Knight Games! Currently on Kickstarter is the first expansion to Tiny Frontiers Tiny Frontiers: Mecha and Monsters! (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gallantknightgames/tiny-frontiers-mecha-and-monsters)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gallantknightgames/tiny-frontiers-mecha-and-monsters
[19:12] <&GKG_Alan> it’s about robots and kaiju punching each other. Sales pitch over.
[19:13] <&GKG_Alan> (seriously, that’s the end of the pitch)
[19:13] <~Dan> Thanks, GKG_Alan!
[19:13] <~Dan> The floor is open to questions!
[19:13] <&Silverlion> So does this build new mechanics for Tiny Frontiers?
[19:13] <&GKG_Alan> Yes, yes it does.
[19:14] <&GKG_Alan> We add new mechanics (to the game), like variable damage, and damage reduction
[19:15] <&GKG_Alan> We also add a new subset of PC abilities called “Jockey Traits”
[19:15] <+Doctor> So will Mecha and Kaiju look more like the Ships from the original Tiny Frontiers or something else?
[19:15] <+Lassekk> Will you have more of those snazzy microsettings?
[19:16] <&GKG_Alan> Doctor, sort of. You can see the basis for them there, but they’re pretty different now. They have multiple chassis to put systems on, and there’s a lot more variation.
[19:16] <+Abstruse> For those who may not know, what is Tiny Frontiers?
[19:16] <&GKG_Alan> related note: The core Tiny Frontiers book is on DrivethruRPG for $5
[19:16] <&GKG_Alan> (Link: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/188485/Tiny-Frontiers)http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/188485/Tiny-Frontiers
[19:16] <&GKG_Alan> 5$ for 130 pages of minimalist science fiction roleplaying!
[19:16] <&GKG_Alan> Abstruse, Tiny Frontiers is a minimalist, light prep science fiction RPG, designed for one-shots, con play and shorter campaigns.
[19:17] <&GKG_Alan> Easy to learn, you can make a character in under 60 seconds, we use ‘microsettings’ to minimalize GM prep by providing adventures, and little high-level settings for play!
[19:17] <&GKG_Alan> Lassekk, yes. The new book already has 7 unlocked
[19:17] <&GKG_Alan> with more on the way
[19:17] <+Lassekk> Whoa, nice!
[19:17] <&GKG_Alan> for those who don’t know, micro-settings are high level six page settings, that have adventure hooks, brief notes that leave lots of room to play in, and even more!
[19:18] <&GKG_Alan> For TF:M&M, we help a community open call, and we only took people who applied. There’s no asking or hunting down authors, these were people who wanted to share their passion for RPGs and giant robots/monsters
[19:18] <&GKG_Alan> We’re obviously going to vet and put them through editors, but it’s exciting!
[19:19] <+Doctor> Well, I noticed Robert Denton on there… I guess that means he’s a fan 🙂
[19:19] <&GKG_Alan> Robert is a great guy. He contributed to the core TF, and to TF:M&M
[19:20] <&GKG_Alan> Some of you might know Rob Wieland. He’s a contributor this go-around.
[19:20] <&GKG_Alan> Our own DWpearce is contributing this time
[19:20] <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Caceyy!)
[19:21] <&GKG_Alan> I mean, I can blab on…but if folks have questions….
[19:22] <+Doctor> The art looks boss. New artist?
[19:22] <~Dan> What sorts of mecha does the game cover? Just the kaiju-sized ones?
[19:22] <&GKG_Alan> Yes! All our art is from Tan Ho Sim who is amazing. We have a bunch of his work showcased on the Kickstarter.
[19:22] <&GKG_Alan> and Dan, it covers everything from walking tanks to giant city level Mecha
[19:23] <~Dan> Given that, how does the game handle scaling?
[19:23] <&GKG_Alan> We have chassis that cover transforming robots and kaiju, combining robots and kaiju, little robots and kaiju, space robots and kaiju, underwater robots and kiaju, and Big robots and kaiju!
[19:23] <+Caceyy> Hello all
[19:23] <~Dan> (wb, Caceyy, and howdy, Jason!)
[19:23] <&GKG_Alan> We use a mechanic called Colossal-sized
[19:23] <~Dan> (Caceyy: Here for the Q&A? 🙂 )
[19:23] <&GKG_Alan> if something has the Colossal-sized tag, it takes special weapons to deal damage to it. Colossal enemies also deal double damage to non-colossal enimes
[19:23] <&GKG_Alan> *enemies
[19:24] <&GKG_Alan> (I apologize for the typos. Typing too fast)
[19:24] <&GKG_Alan> you could look at it similar to “mega damage” from Rifts, or “Heavy Armor” from Savage Worlds
[19:24] <&GKG_Alan> but with some TF minimalist tweaks to it
[19:24] <~Dan> Is there anything between Colossal and non-Colossal, and where is the cut-off point?
[19:25] <&GKG_Alan> There isn’t. Part of the goal of the game is simple rules in a simple framework, without being stupid. While we could create variations in size categories like that, we felt it was better to have the two different weightclasses and leave it there.
[19:26] <+Doctor> What if I’m a little dude with a big gun?
[19:26] <&GKG_Alan> Well you better hope your weapon has the Anti-Colossal weapon tag, or you’re gonna get squished super fast
[19:26] <&GKG_Alan> the game really focuses on the concept of giant robots and giant monsters
[19:27] <&GKG_Alan> to tell smaller stories than that (in size, not scope) the core Tiny Frontiers rules work a lot better.
[19:29] <+GenoFoxx> so no Armor Hunter Merrowlink?
[19:30] <&GKG_Alan> Well, the game is very flexible. You could easily incorporate something like that. Using these rules you could tell that kind of story
[19:30] <&GKG_Alan> you’d probably want to combine both games for that though
[19:30] <&GKG_Alan> it’d work al ot better
[19:30] <+Doctor> That was my next question; are they designed to work together?
[19:30] <&GKG_Alan> yes. They’re 100% compatible.
[19:31] <&GKG_Alan> Look at it like this: Tiny Frontiers is for the people, TF:M&M is for the mecha and monsters.
[19:32] <~Dan> Does the game cover transforming robots?
[19:32] <+Doctor> It’s almost like it says “Mechas and Monsters” on the cover…
[19:32] <&GKG_Alan> Dan, yes it does!
[19:33] <&GKG_Alan> Those rules are built to allow mecha and kaiju to either transform into smaller less automated vehicles
[19:33] <&GKG_Alan> or into similar sized mecha
[19:33] <~Dan> Transforming kaiju?
[19:33] <+Doctor> Can I go all Voltron?
[19:33] <&GKG_Alan> Dan, why not! Gotta be fair to all giant beasties!
[19:34] <&GKG_Alan> and Doctor, yes! We have a special combiner chassis just for those sorts of stories
[19:34] <+Doctor> super colony kaiju would be scarry
[19:34] <+Doctor> but yeah… got to have 5 Lions
[19:34] <+Doctor> I’ll be the head… >.>
[19:34] <&GKG_Alan> heh.
[19:35] <&GKG_Alan> You could totally play that.
[19:35] <~Dan> I was always more of a fan of Vehicle Voltron, myself. I know I’m a rogue in that respect.
[19:35] <~Dan> (Howdy, MonkofLords)
[19:36] <&Silverlion> There were a lot of vehicles
[19:36] <+GenoFoxx> Transforming Kaiju…..Mothra from the millenium series
[19:36] <+Doctor> Dig it. So what kinds of stories is it built to tell? Predominantly combat? Do you have plans for all-mecha and all-kaiju settings?
[19:37] <&GKG_Alan> There are stories for just kaiju, just mecha, or both
[19:37] <&GKG_Alan> from both sides
[19:37] <+GenoFoxx> or Destroyah from Godzilla vs Destroyah
[19:37] <&Silverlion> Can it with Tiny Frontiers do Sentai?
[19:37] <&GKG_Alan> Silverlion, yes it could.
[19:37] <+GenoFoxx> or Hedora from Godzilla vs the Smog Monster
[19:38] <&GKG_Alan> it’d work better with TF corebook
[19:39] <~Dan> Oh, yeah… I forgot about Hedora.
[19:39] <~Dan> So what sorts of weird powers do you have for kaiju?
[19:40] <&GKG_Alan> Well, Red Atomic Breath and Blue Atomic breath. Parasite Drones, Bio-Organic Discharge. Shooting Spines, multiple armies, lashing tails
[19:40] <&GKG_Alan> we have TONS of weird powers
[19:40] <&GKG_Alan> there’s time displacement, nuclear hide
[19:40] <&GKG_Alan> and more
[19:40] <~Dan> Nuclear hide?
[19:41] <~Dan> (Howdy, BPIJonathan)
[19:41] <+BPIJonathan> (was out with some old friends I hadnt seen in years, sorry I am late)
[19:41] <&GKG_Alan> yeah. They glow and the more damage they take, the more the enemy they are fighting takes when they erupt in kinetic energy
[19:41] <+GenoFoxx> Fire Rodan
[19:42] <+GenoFoxx> or Godzilla when he went critical
[19:42] <&GKG_Alan> exactly
[19:42] <&GKG_Alan> lots of cool powers
[19:42] <+BPIJonathan> Alan: Are you talking about the game last night?
[19:42] <&GKG_Alan> yup!
[19:42] <&GKG_Alan> well, that game that’s on KS
[19:42] <&GKG_Alan> not specifically that game
[19:42] <+Doctor> So, walk us through character creation?
[19:43] <&GKG_Alan> So first, you select a micro-setting to play in.
[19:43] <&GKG_Alan> Then you’ll select a chassis, which will tell you how many systems you can pick
[19:43] <&GKG_Alan> systems fall into catagories
[19:43] <&GKG_Alan> so you select the right number of systems, total up your bonuses (if any) pick a pilot ability and done!
[19:44] <&GKG_Alan> each Chassis has roughly 5 to 6 systems
[19:44] <+BPIJonathan> Do the rules modify depending on the micro setting?
[19:45] <&GKG_Alan> not as sense.
[19:45] <&GKG_Alan> each micro-setting will add an additional rule
[19:45] <&GKG_Alan> but they normally don’t remove any
[19:47] <+BPIJonathan> So the rules would be basically the same regardless of if you are playing a 1938 setting or a 2045 setting, but would have some rule added that would be unique to that setting?
[19:48] <&GKG_Alan> yeah
[19:48] <&GKG_Alan> that’s exactly it!
[19:48] <~Dan> Can you give an example of such an added rule?
[19:48] <&GKG_Alan> I mean, obviously you can reskin the powers and weapons to be visually and narratively different.
[19:48] <&GKG_Alan> sure!
[19:49] <&GKG_Alan> So in one of our unlocked micro-settings, the premise is Alien Shamans merge with Kaiju to defend their planet from giant invading robot angels from space (mecha). One of the rules, allows the Shamans to select “Jockey Traits” and use them in the Kaiju, there-by allowing you to simulate “piloting” a kaiju
[19:51] <+GenoFoxx> so the fourth Digimon show by way of Evangelion?
[19:51] <&GKG_Alan> GenoFoxx in a loose analogy, yes.
[19:52] <&GKG_Alan> never make that show though.
[19:53] <+Doctor> Looks like there are a lot of possibilities. Are there things to punch other than other big robots/monsters?
[19:53] <&GKG_Alan> Well…no
[19:53] <&GKG_Alan> Not really
[19:53] <~Dan> No big spaceships?
[19:53] <&GKG_Alan> Those rules are in the core Tiny Frontiers book 🙂
[19:53] <&GKG_Alan> There are rules for helicopters, dinosaurs, and buildings as objects and targets in battle
[19:53] <~Dan> Ah. 🙂
[19:53] <+Doctor> What about like tanks to stomp
[19:53] <+Doctor> ah
[19:54] <&GKG_Alan> We call them “outriders”
[19:54] <&GKG_Alan> and they’re used to enrich and provide a sort of environmental feel to the fights in the game
[19:54] <~Dan> You have special rules for dinosaurs as distinct from kaiju?
[19:54] <&GKG_Alan> Yes!
[19:54] <~Dan> How so?
[19:55] <&GKG_Alan> Well they’re a little smaller and less stompy 😉
[19:55] <&GKG_Alan> but sometimes you gotta strap a laser on a T-Rex and shoot a robot. So we have rules for that
[19:55] <+Doctor> Dino-Wars
[19:55] <+Doctor> *swoon*
[19:55] <&GKG_Alan> Dino-Riders!\
[19:56] <+Doctor> yes indeed
[19:56] <+Doctor> I’ll be needing 3 lasers for my triceritops
[19:56] <~Dan> Could you see using the rules for American 1950s atomic horror?
[19:56] <&GKG_Alan> Dan, in TF as a whole, the game is pretty minimalist. Basically they have less HP, less damage, and die faster.
[19:56] <&GKG_Alan> Dan, you totally could. BPIJonathan’s setting is actually alternate history, and could easily be adapted to that with out much effort.
[19:57] <+Doctor> So are all the mecha characteristics weapons or are there other abilities in there?
[19:57] <&GKG_Alan> So they various systems are: Perception, Weapons, Defense, and Movement
[19:58] <&GKG_Alan> so there are special systems related to all of those
[19:59] <~Dan> Can you make cyber-kaiju with mecha characteristics?
[20:00] <&GKG_Alan> Dan, totally. There’s a special chassis that would let you do a cyberkaiju, or a biomecha
[20:00] <~Dan> Awesome.
[20:01] <+Doctor> Mecha-Godzilla…
[20:01] <+GenoFoxx> Mecha-KingGhidora
[20:02] <&GKG_Alan> yup!
[20:02] <+BPIJonathan> Dang, you outed me
[20:02] <+Doctor> Bio-Mecha… “There are fields, Hiro, endless fields… where mecha are no longer built… they are grown…”
[20:04] <&GKG_Alan> yup!
[20:05] <~Dan> Can you go over the currently unlocked micro-settings?
[20:06] <&GKG_Alan> Sure! It’s a lot of text, but I’ll try to summarize.
[20:06] <&GKG_Alan> So first, Robert Denton: Martian Resistance Fighters form the frontline of the neverending war against Space Kaiju, in a dystopian military fiction future
[20:07] <&GKG_Alan> Elizabeth Chaipraditkul brings you Aquatic Strike Force! Sub-sea adventurers who battle the dreaded sea monsters to keep the coasts safe!
[20:07] <~Dan> (Howdy, AmyL)
[20:07] <~Dan> That lady is a total Witch.
[20:07] <&GKG_Alan> Marie Brennan brings you a setting about battling biology clubs and robotics teams duking it out in giant sized interschool competitions.
[20:08] <+Doctor> Cause that could never go wrong and end the world
[20:08] <&GKG_Alan> BPIJonathan brings you alternate history pulp science fiction! Atomic Robots defend New York against the invading Iron Menace!
[20:08] <&GKG_Alan> Dianna Gunn presents a lost space meat locker! What does it feed? Where does it roost? Why is it empty!? What are those sounds?
[20:09] <&GKG_Alan> Joseph Batts brings you Deus Ex Monstrum, a setting about alien shamans defending their world by merging with the giant beasts that live there!
[20:09] <&GKG_Alan> whew
[20:09] <&GKG_Alan> that was hard!
[20:09] <+BPIJonathan> The vile, evil Dr. Tutankhamun trying to take over the world.
[20:11] <+GenoFoxx> Mr. Tut…that’s ‘Doctor’ Tut to you
[20:11] <~Dan> You touched on this earlier, but can you say a bit more about the tweaks to the TF core rules?
[20:11] <&GKG_Alan> Sure! So core TF has no variable damage, no damage reduction and no way to scale damage
[20:11] <&GKG_Alan> Mecha and Monsters presents all of those things
[20:12] <&GKG_Alan> there are weapons that deal variable damage, and ways to reduce damage without defending
[20:13] <&GKG_Alan> additionally we have the new pilot traits
[20:13] <&GKG_Alan> which are exclusive to micro-settings that allow for mecha / kaiju
[20:13] <~Dan> So you have rules for armor?
[20:14] <&GKG_Alan> yup!
[20:14] <&GKG_Alan> it’s just simple damage reduction
[20:14] <&GKG_Alan> but it’s there
[20:15] <~Dan> Can it be applied to non-Colossal entities?
[20:15] <&GKG_Alan> yes it can!
[20:15] <&GKG_Alan> and it would reduce damage from colossals
[20:17] <~Dan> What’s the range on random damage?
[20:18] <&GKG_Alan> melee or ranged
[20:18] <&GKG_Alan> we don;t get more granular than that.
[20:19] <&GKG_Alan> oh sorry
[20:19] <~Dan> 🙂
[20:19] <&GKG_Alan> answered the wrong question
[20:19] <&GKG_Alan> static to up to 1d6 per attack
[20:20] <&GKG_Alan> we have 1, 2, 1d3, and 1d6
[20:21] <~Dan> And that works with the regular TF rules as well?
[20:21] <&GKG_Alan> It does!
[20:22] <&GKG_Alan> So you could add these things into core TF and it sort of takes it into an “Advanced Tiny Frontiers” mode
[20:22] <~Dan> Do you plan on including these rules in future TF games?
[20:22] <&GKG_Alan> In a wholesale sense no
[20:22] <&GKG_Alan> but if something fits a later book, we will gladly use it
[20:23] <+Doctor> What is the future of TF?
[20:23] <&GKG_Alan> our third book is writen!
[20:23] <+Doctor> Oh wow
[20:23] <&GKG_Alan> and yes Dan it does have reduction adn variable damage, and even more new rules
[20:23] <&GKG_Alan> *written
[20:23] <&GKG_Alan> with less typos than this chat
[20:23] <&GKG_Alan> sigh
[20:23] <~Dan> What’s the third book?
[20:23] <+Doctor> >.> fewer…
[20:23] <&GKG_Alan> DOCTOR STOP IT
[20:23] <&GKG_Alan> 😦
[20:24] <&GKG_Alan> Dan, it’s called: Tiny Frontiers: “Time”-tanium Star!
[20:24] <&GKG_Alan> it’s a time travel scifi western.
[20:24] <&GKG_Alan> working title.
[20:24] <~Dan> Sounds like fun. 🙂
[20:24] <&GKG_Alan> a pun, just for the people here. o.O
[20:25] <~Dan> 😀
[20:25] <&GKG_Alan> 🙂
[20:25] <~Dan> (Howdy, Jezibel1)
[20:26] <+Jezibel1> Hi.
[20:26] <~Dan> Do you offer ready-made mecha and kaiju?
[20:26] <&GKG_Alan> we do. There are pregens for each chassis (mecha and kaiju)
[20:26] <&GKG_Alan> 1 for each
[20:26] <&GKG_Alan> we’re letting backers pay to do them if they want
[20:26] <&GKG_Alan> or we’ll just do them
[20:29] <~Dan> How do you handle the challenge of playing kaiju?
[20:29] <&GKG_Alan> honestly, I just trust the GMs and players to handle that if that’s teh story they want to tell
[20:29] <&GKG_Alan> I can’t make my minimalist game do everything for every group, and I didn’t try. We wanted to give enough tools, but we have to acknowledge that soem of that onus relies on the individual groups
[20:29] <&GKG_Alan> that being said
[20:30] <&GKG_Alan> I ran a 5 session Kaiju game where they had to recover their eggs and spawn from the dastardly humans
[20:30] <&GKG_Alan> of course said eggs were in Tokyo downtown
[20:30] <&GKG_Alan> but, it really was just watching the players gleefully wreck metropolis and agonize over their missing spawn
[20:30] <&GKG_Alan> and that was ok, cuz that’s what was fun for that group
[20:32] <~Dan> How did you handle communication?
[20:32] <&GKG_Alan> we ruled all the monstesr could communicate nonverbally
[20:32] <&GKG_Alan> or through roars
[20:32] <&GKG_Alan> it just mystified the humans
[20:32] <&GKG_Alan> very handwavey
[20:32] <+GenoFoxx> so Gorgo…the family adventure?
[20:33] <&GKG_Alan> basically yes
[20:33] <~Dan> Sounds like fun. 🙂
[20:33] <&GKG_Alan> it was.
[20:33] <&GKG_Alan> but that’s the kind of game it is
[20:34] <~Dan> I’m a bit tapped for questions, to be honest. Is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[20:34] <+GenoFoxx> is there a leveling system
[20:34] <&GKG_Alan> there isnt’ GenoFoxx
[20:35] <+GenoFoxx> a way to progress the characters and mecha?
[20:35] <&GKG_Alan> nope. You’d have to homebrew that
[20:35] <&GKG_Alan> it’s for shorter games
[20:35] <&GKG_Alan> we jettisoned that part
[20:35] <&GKG_Alan> if everyone is out of questions, that’s honestly ok 🙂
[20:35] <&GKG_Alan> it’s a minimalist game
[20:35] <&GKG_Alan> minimalist questions are ok!
[20:35] <+BPIJonathan> Could they be put out as optional rules?
[20:36] * +GenoFoxx puts on his cybersuit; exits the airlock and searches for the leveling rules
[20:36] <&GKG_Alan> BPIJonathan, likely yes. We wrote some back for Core TF and we still have them. We simply haven’t elected to pursue them further.
[20:36] <+GenoFoxx> can I vote for them?
[20:37] <&GKG_Alan> GenoFoxx I will certainly consider that!
[20:38] <&GKG_Alan> Nope, I think I’m good! I hope we see everyone.
[20:38] <&GKG_Alan> On the kickstarter. I feel it’s pretty affordable! (35$ gets you book, dice, gm screen adn PDF)
[20:39] <+Doctor> The dice look sweeeet
[20:39] <~Dan> Thanks very much for joining us, GKG_Alan!
[20:39] <&GKG_Alan> it was my pleasure! I’m sure I’ll be around again!
[20:39] <+BPIJonathan> If you like the game folks, dont applaud, just throw money 😀
[20:41] <+GenoFoxx> and GKG_Alan was never seen again; having been swallowed during a battle with a rogue Squidzadora
[20:41] <~Dan> Speaking of money, my tip jar, for those so inclined: (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/ 🙂
[20:41] <~Dan> Give me just a moment, and I’ll get you a link to the log, GKG_Alan!
