[19:03] <+smif> My name is Dan Smith, aka SMIF. I was a major illustration force in the RPG indusrty in the 1990’s. During that time, I created my first game, Battle of the Bands, which I am rebooting now on Kickstarter.
[19:03] <+smif> I also dance really good.
[19:04] <+smif> I will be be green
[19:04] <+smif> The game is about you starting your own rock band and kicking everyone else’s band off the stage.
[19:04] <+smif> With your awesomeness. And weirdness.
[19:05] <+smif> If you haven’t been to the campaign site, (Link: http://tinyurl.com/j575n5j)http://tinyurl.com/j575n5j
[19:09] <+smif> I’m drawing a chimp for the game as I speak.
[19:09] <+GenoFoxx> you’re more an aquamarine
[19:10] <+smif> indeed
[19:10] <~Dan> (Just a reminder to give us a (done) when you’re ready for questions. 🙂 )
[19:13] <+smif> No questions? What’s my shoe size? Favorite ice cream flavor?
[19:13] <+smif> DONE!!!!
[19:13] <+smif> 😉
[19:13] <+smif> (done)
[19:13] <~Dan> Thanks, smif! The floor is open to questions!
[19:14] <+smif> whew
[19:14] <~Dan> So first of all, bear with me, as I’m not used to doing these for card games. 🙂
[19:14] <~Dan> That said, can you describe game play?
[19:14] <+smif> Yes, each person has a me card that represents them in their band.
[19:15] <+smif> As the game progresses, they aquire other band members into their band.
[19:16] <+smif> the band members, instrument cards and reputation cards comprise their band strength, called hip points.
[19:16] <+smif> these are used when they battle the other bands at gigs.
[19:17] <+smif> when a gig round is called, modifier cards called monkey wrenches are played on bands/band members to augment/diminish their power(s) during the gig.
[19:18] <+smif> after all the cards have been played, each player rolls an audience die (their reaction to your band) and that is added to their hip points. highet wins the gig and it’s star point value.
[19:18] <+smif> Star points win the game.
[19:19] <~Dan> How many gig rounds in a game?
[19:19] <+smif> That is the basic idea. There are other cards and ways that cards are played to create a completely bizarre game experience.
[19:19] <+smif> (done)
[19:21] <+smif> Gig rounds occur when a player plays a gig card from their hand. Gigs are worth 1-3 star poijts.
[19:21] <+smif> Hit Singles also are worth star points
[19:21] <~Dan> How do you get those?
[19:24] <+smif> and some of them help during gigs with added hip points
[19:24] <+smif> some band members are worth star points when in your band
[19:24] <+smif> (done)
[19:24] <+smif> There are 2 decks you can draw from on your turn
[19:25] <+smif> (you draw up to 7 cards in your hand)
[19:25] <+smif> the red deck are band members/instruments/reputations/websites….resources for your band.
[19:25] <+smif> the blue deck are gigs/monkey wrenches/hit singles, contracts (for playing higher powered hit singles), and music biz cards. This is the event deck
[19:25] <+smif> On your turn you can do the one of the following:
[19:25] <+smif> Play a band member into your band.
[19:25] <+smif> Play an instrument on a band member in your band
[19:25] <+smif> Play a band member and instrument together into your band.
[19:25] <+smif> Play a contract card on your band
[19:25] <+smif> Play a hit single on your band
[19:25] <+smif> Play a music biz card, which can target whomever the card says you can target
[19:26] <+smif> Play a gig card-starting a gig round.
[19:26] <+smif> Or discard up to 4 cards from your hand.
[19:26] <+smif> (done)
[19:27] <~Dan> You mentioned weirdness. Can you give some examples of that?
[19:28] <+smif> Some of the combinations of band members/instruments/reputations are crazy.
[19:29] <+smif> You can have Rob, the zombie, playing the Air Guitar with a reputation of Androgyny( which changes his gender to F from M)
[19:29] <+smif> You can have Mom, playing the chocolate syrup with the negative reputation of Goofy dancer
[19:30] <~Dan> (Howdy, CSBarnhart!)
[19:31] <+CSBarnhart> Hello.
[19:31] <~Dan> That’s pretty awesome, smif. 🙂
[19:31] <~Dan> How long does a typical game take?
[19:32] <+smif> You can have Sant playing the two turntables with the reputation of teen idol
[19:32] <+smif> Santa
[19:32] <+smif> The basic game has 200 cards
[19:32] <+smif> The 4 expansion total 200 more cards
[19:33] <+smif> and KS specials total to about 60 more cards.
[19:33] <+smif> The possibilities are endless
[19:33] <+smif> You determine the star point total to achieve.
[19:33] <+smif> A 6 point game will take 15 minutes.
[19:33] <+smif> A 12 star point game will be about an hour
[19:33] <+smif> A career game, playing until one deck has been depleted, could take all night… but those games aren’t about winning
[19:33] <+smif> they’re about havinbg a good time
[19:33] <+smif> (done)
[19:34] <~Dan> (Howdy, MonkofLords!)
[19:34] <+smif> Hey!
[19:35] <~Dan> Sorry if you already mentioned this, but how many can play at once?
[19:35] <+smif> It’s an all ages game, the Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll expansion is where the “real” dirty rock cards are found. Or objectionable ones, anyway.
[19:35] <+smif> Basic set can handle 2-6 players
[19:35] <+smif> Each expansion allows for 2 more players.
[19:36] <+smif> Basically once you get abouve 7 players, teams are a better way to ply.
[19:36] <+smif> (done)
[19:37] <~Dan> Hmm…
[19:37] <~Dan> I’m going to need your help here, smif. What’s something else we should know about the game?
[19:38] <+smif> It’s a game where you roleplay being the leader of your band.
[19:38] <+smif> When cards are played against you, you take it personally.
[19:38] <+smif> When someone steals your mom from your band, that stinks!
[19:38] * ~Dan chuckles
[19:38] <~Dan> Yeah, I suppose it would. 🙂
[19:39] <+smif> When they make her a diseased sex machine….
[19:39] <+smif> It’s hilarious
[19:39] <+smif> People stop when they hear a game being played and are instantly hooked
[19:39] <+smif> I mean, everyone wans to be in a band, right?
[19:39] <+smif> And the diversity or band members
[19:40] <+smif> from the dude down the street, to the prince of darkness (ozzy)
[19:41] <~Dan> I saw mention of a puppet?
[19:42] <+smif> The instruments are as wacky
[19:42] <+smif> Candy box (you blow thru it… it used to be a thing when I was a kid, to a haunted player piano which is both a band member and instrument!
[19:42] <+smif> (done)
[19:43] <~Dan> How did you come up with the game?
[19:43] <+smif> Yes, one band member is called Angry Puppet-Animal from The Muppet show
[19:43] <+smif> Every card has a historical music reference.
[19:43] <+smif> We have Jughead.
[19:43] <+smif> We havePrince
[19:43] <+smif> We have Jiminy Hendryx… Jiminy cricket as Jimi Hendryx
[19:43] <+smif> I was working at a computer game company by day and on INWO by night
[19:44] <~Dan> INWO?
[19:44] <+smif> I was driving how, saddened by the state of card games-always about destroying and gloating over your opponent
[19:44] <+smif> Illuminati :New World Order by Steve Jackson Games
[19:44] <~Dan> Ah! Right.
[19:45] <+smif> And listening to the radio-back in black, I realized that everyone wants to be in a band
[19:45] <+smif> So, I made notes on scraps of paper while driving
[19:45] <+smif> Got home, went to the computer
[19:45] <+smif> And in 2 hours, 60% of the game was finished.
[19:46] <+smif> 1 year of playtesting everyday at lunch, it was finished
[19:47] <~Dan> What’s more difficult for you: RPGs or card games?
[19:47] <+smif> I printed it out at Kinkos and sold it online for $5 in ziplock bags
[19:48] <~Dan> (Howdy, Ettin, KJ!)
[19:50] <~Dan> (brb – please continue)
[19:55] <+Geek2theRight> (I see that a Q&A is in progress, but nobody’s talking.)
[19:55] <~Dan> Howdy, Geek2theRight, Le_Squide!
[19:55] <~Dan> wb, smif!
[19:56] <+smif> Arrrghhh!
[19:56] <&Silverlion> We lost the talker 😀
[19:56] <&Silverlion> He’s back now
[19:56] <+smif> Hey all! Just got bumped but I’m back…
[19:56] <+smif> (done)
[19:56] <~Dan> [19:47] <~Dan> What’s more difficult for you: RPGs or card games?
[19:57] <+smif> rd games are more difficult because of the limitations of cards.
[19:58] <~Dan> Hmm… Interesting point.
[19:58] <+smif> 121 pages in a book allows for anything
[19:58] * ~Dan nods
[19:58] <+smif> 2 sides of a card is all you have in card games
[19:59] <+smif> But I prefer card games BECAUSE of the limitation
[19:59] <+smif> It forces the designer to be concentrated in their efforts to be clear and true to their genre/concept
[20:00] <~Dan> (Howdy, Will!)
[20:00] <+smif> if you can’t get the feeling of being in a rock band in your card game, you aren’t doing it right
[20:00] <+smif> And I have seen many not get it right.
[20:00] <+smif> I have been in a band, so I do have experience in that arena
[20:01] <+smif> Always create from what you know
[20:01] <~Dan> Indeed.
[20:01] <+smif> (done)
[20:02] <~Dan> So I’ll be honest here: I don’t think I’ve got another hour’s worth of questions. Is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
[20:02] <+smif> If anyone is interested in my illustration years in RPGS…
[20:02] <+Geek2theRight> I have one since I wasn’t here at the beginning: is this an RPG, a card game, or are you doing both?
[20:03] <+smif> It’s a card game that you kinda roleplay-ish. You play it like it’s personal.
[20:04] <+smif> (Link: http://tinyurl.com/j575n5j)http://tinyurl.com/j575n5j has all the info
[20:04] <+Geek2theRight> Ah, okay.
[20:04] <+smif> (done)
[20:05] <~Dan> What are some games that you illustrated?
[20:06] <+smif> I was the out of house artist for Steve Jackson Games for about 4 years. I saw a lot of art directors come and go and was the defacto art director of my stuff for most of that time.
[20:06] <+smif> I did work for FASA
[20:06] <+smif> White Wolf
[20:06] <+smif> I.C.E.
[20:06] <+smif> BTRC
[20:07] <+smif> Xxxenophile card game
[20:08] <~Dan> O.o
[20:08] <~Dan> There was a Xxxenophile card game?
[20:08] <+smif> and tons of others.
[20:08] <+smif> Yes, it was dirty
[20:08] <~Dan> I would imagine so!
[20:08] <+smif> I did 13 cards for that
[20:09] <+xyphoid> haha I remember that game
[20:09] <+smif> I worked on Shadowrun, Mage, Vampire, Werewolf, The Mage Tarot deck, Battletech
[20:09] <+xyphoid> I think my ex still has our cards
[20:09] <+smif> Gurps, Illuminati, Car Wars,
[20:09] <+smif> I did so much work, I burnt out and didn’t draw for quite a few years after
[20:10] <+Will> Nice
[20:10] <+smif> (Link: http://smifink.deviantart.com/gallery/)http://smifink.deviantart.com/gallery/ sample of my recent stuff from card games/ conventions to older work from the 1990s
[20:11] <+smif> I did a few of my own comic books as well.
[20:11] <+smif> (done)
[20:12] <+smif> If that’s a wrap, I’m good. 😉
[20:13] <~Dan> All righty, then! Thanks very much for joining us, smif!
[20:13] <~Dan> If you’ll give me just a moment, I’ll get the log posted and get you the link.
[20:13] <~Dan> And just a reminder for my readers: My tip jar is here: (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/ 🙂
