7:01 PM <+Kosta_FL> Hi everybody! This is Kosta and Nils form Fria Ligan. Where here to tell you and hopefully answer some questions about Coriolis.
7:03 PM <+Kosta_FL> So what is Coriolis – The Third Horizon? The short answer is: Firefly meets Arabian Nights in this unique sci-fi RPG. Crew a starship and explore the ancient mysteries of The Third Horizon!
7:05 PM <+Nils_FL> We are Fria Ligan (Free League), a Swedish game studio most known internationally for Mutant Year Zero
7:05 PM <+Nils_FL> The brief answer of what you do is something like this:
7:05 PM <+Nils_FL> You will crew a space ship and travel the Horizon. You will explore the ancient ruins of the Portal Builders, undertake missions for the powerful factions and partake in the game of political intrigue on Coriolis station – the centre of power in the Third Horizon. You might even encounter strange beings from the dark between the stars.
7:06 PM <+Nils_FL> I think we are open for questions now
7:06 PM <+Kosta_FL> (done) in other words
7:06 PM <+dormouse> what is meant by ‘third horizon’
7:07 PM <~Dan> Thanks, guys!
7:07 PM <~Dan> Okay, NOW the floor is open to questions. 🙂
7:07 PM <+Nils_FL> The Third Horizon is a cluster of star systems (36 of them) linked together by ancient star portals.
7:08 PM <+JohnK> Kosta_FL, Nils_FL… Since I have no familiarity with Mutant Year Zero, other than what I’ve heard of the game, can you tell us something about the game rules used in Coriolis?
7:08 PM <+Nils_FL> Since the devastating Portal War a hundred years ago it has been isolated from the First and Second Horizons (first settled by humanity).
7:08 PM <+dormouse> why are they called ‘horizons’ though?
7:08 PM <~Dan> (Question pause after JohnK’s question.)
7:08 PM <+Nils_FL> So basically it’s the setting 🙂
7:09 PM <+Nils_FL> The core mechanic is the same: To make a skill roll, you simply grab a number of dice for your attribute score, skill level and gear, and roll them all together. You need at least one six to succeed, and extra sixes can give crits and other bonus effects.
7:09 PM <+Nils_FL> (normal six sided dice)
7:09 PM <+Nils_FL> Regarding the name, to be completely honest, because it sounds good 🙂
7:10 PM <+JohnK> Nils_FL, are there any dice mechanics that can enhance the dice rolls or things like Drama/Style/Story Points, that sort of thing?
7:10 PM <+Nils_FL> Coriolis is not a game where everything is grounded in a very detailed history connected to our earth, the settings “pre”history is intentionally left a bit vague
7:12 PM <+Nils_FL> Sure there is! The belief in the nine Icons are a powerful force in the Horizon, when you fail a roll you can pray to an Icon and reroll all of your dice. However, the GM then gets a Darkness point that can be used as sort of a fate point for GMs.
7:12 PM <+Nils_FL> This is similar (but different) to the push mechanic in Mutant Year Zero
7:13 PM <~Dan> What are the Icons?
7:13 PM <+Nils_FL> I’ll let Kosta answer that one
7:14 PM <+JohnK> Umm, Nils_FL, do the Darkness points you mentioned have anything to do with the Dark Between the Stars that was mentioned in the description of the game earlier?
7:14 PM <+Kosta_FL> The Icons are the gods the people of the Third Horizon believe in. The are worshipped in almost the same form everywhere in the Horizon.
7:15 PM <+SirGene> I probably missed it but can we get links to Kickstarter, or where ever and Character Record Sheets?
7:15 PM <+Nils_FL> @JohnK: They do. The Dark between the Stars has a similiar role to the concept of the Devil in christianity.
7:15 PM <~Dan> (wb, fnord)
7:16 PM <~Dan> SirGene: (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1192053011/coriolis-a-sci-fi-rpg-from-the-makers-of-mutant-ye)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1192053011/coriolis-a-sci-fi-rpg-from-the-makers-of-mutant-ye
7:16 PM <+Nils_FL> The important thing here is: to the people of the Third Horizon, this is real. Religion is real. Myth matters.
7:16 PM <~Dan> But yes, do you have a character sheet we can see?
7:16 PM <+JohnK> @Nils_FL: I really liked the basic write-up on the Icons that you folks provided in one of the recent updates on the KS. How detailed are the Icon writeups in the book itself?
7:16 PM <+Kosta_FL> The Dark between the Stars is real an can manifest as bad luck or creatures from the void, and many more things.
7:16 PM <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, jlhlinnell!)
7:17 PM <+Nils_FL> We don’t have any sheets in English yet but we do have both a character and a ship sheet in Swedish 🙂 (the translated version vill be done sone though)
7:17 PM <+JohnK> Kosta_FL: Thanks for that info! I assume the GM can use the Darkness points to “bring them” into the game?
7:18 PM <+Kosta_FL> Yes JohnK and also power artifacts and talent that these creatures or djinni possess.
7:19 PM <~Dan> So is the supernatural “real” in this setting?
7:19 PM <+JohnK> As a fan of the Arabian Nights, what sort of other influences does the game have as inspiration sources? (And what else can you say at this point about djinni?) 🙂
7:19 PM <+Nils_FL> If you want to practise your Swedish you can have a sneek peak at the character sheet here: (Link: http://frialigan.se/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/rollformular_4F.pdf)http://frialigan.se/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/rollformular_4F.pdf
7:19 PM <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Guest15!)
7:20 PM <+Kosta_FL> Regarding the Icons, there is much more text about them in the rules. More about how they are worshipped and what offerings you make to them.
7:20 PM <+Nils_FL> @Dan: It’s real in a sense, but this being science fiction there can be more than one answer.
7:20 PM * ~Dan nods
7:21 PM <+JohnK> How active are the Icons in the game, in terms of actually interacting with the people (and presumably the player characters)?
7:21 PM <+Guest15> thanks. good to be here. you had me at firefly.
7:22 PM <~Dan> Guest15: You can set your name with the /nick command. 🙂
7:22 PM <~Dan> (Howdy, MonkofLords!)
7:22 PM <+Kosta_FL> The main interaction in the game is thru the pray to the icon mechanism. But there are stories about how the Icons have chosen avatars to walk among the people of the Horizon.
7:23 PM <+JohnK> Ooh, that sounds almost ominous and creepy to me, Kosta_FL. I like! 🙂
7:23 PM <+Kosta_FL> Future adventures might shed a light on this 🙂
7:24 PM <+JohnK> Or do you mean Darkness, Kosta_FL? 😉
7:24 PM <~Dan> (wb, Guest15)
7:24 PM <+Kosta_FL> There are also a lot of stories of efreets and other djinni that take the form of humans to interact with the folks of the Horizon.
7:25 PM <+Kosta_FL> Yeah Darkness indeed JohnK!
7:25 PM <~Dan> (Howdy, Silverlion!)
7:25 PM <+Kosta_FL> There was a Q about Arabian Nights also.
7:26 PM <+Kosta_FL> Paraphrased from our KS:
7:26 PM <+JohnK> Yep, Kosta_FL, that was me! <waves>
7:27 PM <+Kosta_FL> Ah, Nils_FL told me the Q was about Other influences
7:28 PM <+JohnK> Well, it was about that, too, Kosta_FL!
7:28 PM <+Kosta_FL> So, we’ve been influenced a lot by modern sci fi but also
7:28 PM <&Silverlion> (Allo Dan)
7:29 PM <+Kosta_FL> the Byzantine empire, Ottoman empire and some russian tales among other things
7:29 PM <+Nils_FL> in regards to scifi writers: Alastair Reynolds, Michael Flynn, Iain M. Banks
7:29 PM <+JohnK> Russian tales? Does that mean Baba Yaga might be out there somewhere? <g>
7:29 PM <+Nils_FL> Ian McDonald
7:30 PM <+Nils_FL> Heh, not exactly 🙂
7:30 PM <+Jigglypuff> Is there a way to make genlab alpha characters work in Coriolis?
7:30 PM <~Dan> Are there aliens in this setting, or is it all humans?
7:30 PM <+Nils_FL> It’s more loose inspiration than reproduction of old tales
7:31 PM <+JohnK> Ooh, an answer that isn’t an answer, but intrigues. Thanks, Nils_FL! 🙂
7:31 PM <+Nils_FL> Regarding Genlab Alpha characters, well it could certanly be done as the systems are similar (though have a lot of differences as well). Setting wise it would be a bit more difficult though,
7:32 PM <+JohnK> Dan, there are 72 (!!) people here on the forum tonight, and nobody but three folks have questions? Sheesh! 😦
7:32 PM <+Nils_FL> The Earth is a distant memory in Coriolis, the stuff of myths and old tales
7:32 PM <~Dan> JohnK: We have a whole lot of lurkers often, sadly.
7:32 PM <+JohnK> First Horizon, Nils_FL, or before them?
7:32 PM <+Nils_FL> it’s not the same universe of Mutant Year Zero really
7:33 PM <+Nils_FL> First Horizon is the one closest to Earth correct
7:33 PM <+Nils_FL> but it’s cutoff from the Third Horizone
7:33 PM <+GenoFoxx> is there mecha or power armor?
7:33 PM <+JohnK> Nils_FL: By at least the Second Horizon, yes? 🙂
7:34 PM <+JohnK> That’s definitely a shame, Dan. *sigh*
7:34 PM <+Nils_FL> Regarding aliens: there are a few semi-intelligent species like the nekatra and the ekilbri, however they are more regarded as smart animals than anything else.
7:34 PM <+Kosta_FL> Regarding aliens, there are only the long gone ones in Coriolis, the Portal Builders or Progenitors, but you can actually play more than basic humans.
7:34 PM <~Dan> Oh? Like what?
7:35 PM <+JohnK> Sounds like there’s not a lot of demand for xeno-archaeologists, folks.
7:35 PM <+Nils_FL> Also some strange stuff has happened in the Horizon lately, strange beings calling themselves Emissaries have rosen from the depths of the gas giant Xene and stirred things up.
7:36 PM <&Silverlion> Besides portals what kind of space travel is there?
7:36 PM <+Kosta_FL> Indeed JohnK – that’s actually what I’d play as a PC 🙂
7:36 PM <+JohnK> Same here, Kosta_FL. I love xeno-archaeologists, and in this setting they really appeal to me!
7:37 PM <~Dan> wb, Silverlion
7:37 PM <&Silverlion> Thanks.
7:37 PM <+Nils_FL> There’s a lot of ruins and artefacts if you dig in the right places: from the Portal Builders to the high cultures of the Firstcome
7:37 PM <+Kosta_FL> What I meant is there actually is room for xeno-archeology – there are a lot of ruins and mysterious artifacts left
7:38 PM <~Dan> Did you guys see GenoFoxx’s question about mecha and power armor?
7:38 PM <+Kosta_FL> I’ll answer that:
7:38 PM <+Nils_FL> Missed that one, theres no mechas in the Horizon, but there are certanly high tech armours
7:38 PM <+JohnK> Okay, Kosta_FL, Nils_FL, I’m in gamer heaven now. Shame I’ll be running the game, not playing in it! (Except perhaps at a GenCon or some such, I hope.)
7:39 PM <+Kosta_FL> There are no mechas in Coriolis all though there are the usual rumors about huge power armors used in the conflict on the moons of Uharu by the Consortium
7:40 PM <+JohnK> Since no one has asked this question, I will. Kosta_FL, Nils_FL: what is the combat system like in the game? How deadly is it?
7:41 PM <+Nils_FL> Let me clarify what the Firstcome are. A long, long time mankind sent two giant arkships towards the star Aldebaran. They travelled the stars for centuries, most in sleep, but the crew lived their lives onboard. When they finally arrived at the star, they found that it had already been colonized by humanity, several hundred years before.
7:42 PM <+Nils_FL> So really, there are two cultures in the Third Horizon, the Firstcome (who have lived here for hundreds of years, fought wars, prospered and died) and the newly arrived Zenithians
7:42 PM <+Nils_FL> This is one of the central themes of the game: the conflict between new and old, technology and myth
7:42 PM <+Nils_FL> Regarding the combat system
7:42 PM <+Kosta_FL> About combat, it’s not as deadly as in MYZ but you can certainly die from a critical injury even if your close to a trauma lab.
7:43 PM <+Nils_FL> It’s based on the one in MYZ but a bit more tactical
7:43 PM <+GenoFoxx> so how did the firstcome get there first?
7:43 PM <+JohnK> Bear in mind, guys, I have no experience with MYZ at all.
7:43 PM <+Nils_FL> you get more options here, but without overloading the players with options
7:44 PM <+Kosta_FL> GenoFoxx: Through the portals that were discovered after the two ark ships left Earth.
7:44 PM <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Guest59! You can set your name with the /nick command. 🙂 )
7:45 PM <+Nils_FL> Basically: you attack with a Strength (for close combat) or Cool (for guns etc) + skill rating + bonus for weapon
7:45 PM <+Nils_FL> A six is a hit, every additional six gets you either more damage or special results (a bit like the stunt system in Dragon Age)
7:46 PM <+Nils_FL> You got critical hit ratings for all weapons, roll equal or more sixes and you get to roll on the crit table (dangerous)
7:46 PM <+Nils_FL> Armour has a rating of 1-8 or so, you roll for that, every six cancels a hit
7:47 PM <+Kosta_FL> You actually have to assign sixes to crits, so it’s a choice
7:47 PM <+JohnK> Kosta_FL: What does that mean, exactly?
7:47 PM <+Nils_FL> It’s a quick and easy combat systems. Fights are brief but dangerous (but you won’t die by being hit by a bat like in MYZ)
7:47 PM <+Kosta_FL> So the system is skewed towards weapons being more powerful than armor.
7:48 PM <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, MidnightBlue!)
7:48 PM <+JohnK> Hey, @MidnightBlue, how you doing? 🙂
7:48 PM <+Nils_FL> Hey, Midnight!
7:48 PM <+JohnK> Thanks for the combat explanation, Nils_FL, Kosta_FL, much appreciated! 🙂
7:48 PM <+MidnightBlue> Great, John, Nils (and all)! Can’t stay long, but had to see what craziness you all are up to.
7:49 PM <~Dan> So I have a question about the damage mechanic.
7:49 PM <+JohnK> Going back to something mentioned earlier: When we talk here of djnni and efreet here, are we talking in a science fiction sense, or more in a fantasy sense?
7:49 PM <+Nils_FL> Sure, fire away
7:49 PM <+SirGene> Just wanted to pop up and say I like your back story. I am still here. I have often thought about sleeper ships and cultural shock complications and such. Portals are a good way to handle stellar travel too.
7:49 PM <+Kosta_FL> JohnK: So if you roll 4 sixes you use one of them to hit and get the base damage for your weapon. The weapon might have a crit value of 2. So you can either assign two sixes to get a crit roll or use them for additional damage or to push the defendant etc.
7:50 PM <~Dan> It seems that this is a system that conflates weapon damage with weapon accuracy. This would seem to make big, powerful weapons more accurate as a result.
7:50 PM <~Dan> As in, it would make sense to shoot at a fly with a bazooka.
7:50 PM <~Dan> Am I missing something?
7:50 PM <+JohnK> Ooh, that’s excellent, Kosta_FL! Definitely dangerous, under the right conditions.
7:51 PM <+Nils_FL> Well, actually every weapon as a bonus (0-3) and a damage rating (1-5 or thereabouts)
7:51 PM <+Nils_FL> and a crit rating
7:51 PM <+Kosta_FL> between 1-4
7:51 PM <~Dan> Ah, I see.
7:51 PM <+Nils_FL> damage is applied after the success roll
7:52 PM <~Dan> Okay, that makes sense.
7:52 PM <+Nils_FL> so if you hit with two sixes and have a damage of 3, you get 4 in damage
7:52 PM <+Kosta_FL> but before armor roll
7:52 PM <+Nils_FL> (the first one is to hit, the extra one can be used to increase damage or choose a stunt)
7:53 PM * ~Dan nods
7:53 PM <+Kosta_FL> JohnK: About efreet and djinni – they are believed to be spirits by the folks of the Horizon but can affect machinery as well as humans.
7:54 PM <+Nils_FL> For all effects they are real. What they come frome is something you can explore in the game.
7:54 PM <~Dan> (Howdy, Velociengineer_Bill!)
7:54 PM <+Kosta_FL> The Beast and djinni chapter in the rules are actually only fpr the GM, so players wont know more than rumors about them
7:55 PM <+MidnightBlue> I’d say my biggest question left right now is to find out more about the Factions. But that might be better for a KS update. So I’ll just ask if the player characters are assumed to be a part of a specific faction as the default?
7:55 PM <+JohnK> Thanks, Kosta_FL for the combat explanation and both of you for the business with efreet/djinni. And I like that, though a lot of players will try to look at that part of the book! 🙂
7:55 PM <+Kosta_FL> They are not part of a Faction by default
7:55 PM <+Nils_FL> The Factions are the movers and shakers of the Horizon
7:56 PM <+Nils_FL> you can work for them, or against them
7:56 PM <+JohnK> Nils_FL, Kosta_FL: The combat system looks like one I can work with, to be sure. If the GM Screen has all the tables and charts necessary (assuming the KS hits the Stretch Goal), I’ll be happy.
7:56 PM <+MidnightBlue> So no players are in the Rebellion fighting the Empire setup…for example?
7:56 PM <+Kosta_FL> Silverlion: about space travel – spaceships jump through portals between systems but use fusion powered graviton projectors to travel flat space.
7:56 PM <+Nils_FL> not exactly no, there are no dedicated bad guys here
7:57 PM <+Nils_FL> there’s no Empire really
7:57 PM <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Guest12!)
7:57 PM <+MidnightBlue> Just what I wanted to hear Nils. =) A nice murky playground. =)
7:57 PM <+Kosta_FL> But each group can choose to have a nemesis when they create their group.
7:58 PM <+Kosta_FL> But there is the Consortium 😉
7:58 PM <+Nils_FL> the dominating faction is the Consortium, but they have a lot of enemies
7:58 PM <+MidnightBlue> Nemesis as in a Faction or an individual?
7:58 PM <+Kosta_FL> Individual
7:58 PM <+JohnK> Btw, folks… what time is it in Sweden right now? 🙂
7:58 PM <+Kosta_FL> 0258 am
7:58 PM <+MidnightBlue> I choose Bob as my nemesis…always Bob…
7:58 PM <~Dan> (Welcome, Guest15!)
7:59 PM <+Seiryuu202> morning~
7:59 PM <~Dan> Kosta_FL: You guys are troopers. 🙂
7:59 PM <+JohnK> Eeek, you guys need to get some sleep! Then back to work on the game, right? 😉
7:59 PM <~Dan> (Howdy, Seiryuu202!)
7:59 PM <+Kosta_FL> Vacation you know!
7:59 PM <+Seiryuu202> hi Dan
7:59 PM <+MidnightBlue> Yeah…nice of you to stay up so late for us…or get up so early. 🙂
7:59 PM <+Kosta_FL> Kids asleep 🙂
7:59 PM <+JohnK> I have no idea what this word “vacation” you are using means! Haven’t had one in ages.
7:59 PM <+Kosta_FL> Hehe
8:00 PM <~Dan> How would you describe spacecraft combat in the game? Is it cinematic dogfights, for example?
8:00 PM <+Kosta_FL> No, more like subs
8:01 PM <+Kosta_FL> You have to find your enemy with your sensors.
8:01 PM <~Dan> What sorts of weapons are used?
8:01 PM <+Kosta_FL> Lock on the target and then you can fire your torpedoes, accelerator guns or EMP-pulses
8:01 PM <+Kosta_FL> Among other things
8:02 PM <+MidnightBlue> Oh…here’s one. MYZ focused a lot on the need to gather resources (Food, Water, etc.). Is there anything like that in Coriolis? Is getting the next job important to get credits to keep the ship fueled in a book-keeping sense, or just a story sense?
8:02 PM <+Nils_FL1> I lost the connection here
8:02 PM <+Kosta_FL> There are also vulcan guns that fire rocket propelled bullets
8:02 PM <~Dan> No energy weapons?
8:03 PM <+Kosta_FL> Regarding the ship you will need money: birr to service your ship. But theres no food or water mechanic in Coriolis, it’s not that kind of game 🙂
8:04 PM <+MidnightBlue> Perfectly fine with that Kosta. 🙂
8:04 PM <+Kosta_FL> There are thermal guns that fire superheated plasma
8:04 PM <+Nils_FL1> but no lasers
8:04 PM <+Kosta_FL> So the three basic weapons tech are vulcan, accelerator and thermal
8:04 PM <~Dan> What was your thinking about that, re: no lasers?
8:04 PM <+Nils_FL1> also torpedoes are a thing
8:05 PM <+Kosta_FL> bullets, railgun and “blasters”
8:05 PM <+Nils_FL1> It’s not really a grand space opera game in the vein of Star Wars
8:05 PM <+Nils_FL1> so the tech is a bit more down to earth
8:06 PM <+Kosta_FL> The thermal has some of the features of lasers with long range etc
8:06 PM <+Kosta_FL> but ist plasma not light
8:06 PM * ~Dan nods
8:06 PM <+Nils_FL1> It’s less dogfights in space and more submarines where sensors are important and every volley can be very dangerous
8:07 PM * ~Dan nods
8:07 PM <+Nils_FL1> more 2300AD than Star Wars
8:07 PM <~Dan> What’s state of the art for personal weaponry?
8:07 PM <+Nils_FL1> a question for Kosta i believe
8:08 PM <+JohnK> Something I’ve been meaning to ask: What role does Religion play in this game, and how does it manifest? Do player characters have to be or act religiously?
8:08 PM <+Kosta_FL> In Coriolis we try to avoid modern wording or tech, so there are no lasers, no tablets, no AIs and no DNA. Instead you have thermal tech, tabulas (you can write on but not much more), intelligences that are more like expert systems with personalit and the biocode.
8:09 PM <+Nils_FL1> Regarding religion, you are considered strange if you do not belive in the Icons
8:09 PM <+Nils_FL1> the default state is one of belief
8:09 PM <+Kosta_FL> Persona weaponry is based around the same tech as space weapons
8:09 PM <~Dan> Sort of an… Iconoclast?
8:10 PM <+MidnightBlue> Is there anything in MYZ and Genlab Alpha that can be easily converted to Coriolis for added resources? Do any of the Talents transfer for example? It’s always nice to get extra mileage out of my books. 🙂
8:10 PM <+JohnK> LOL, Dan, that was funny! 🙂
8:10 PM * ~Dan bows 🙂
8:10 PM <+Nils_FL1> hehe
8:10 PM <+Kosta_FL> For close combat you also have duraweapons, powerblades and mercurium weapons
8:10 PM <+JohnK> Does religion extend beyond the Icons at all, or is it predominantly focused on them?
8:10 PM <+Nils_FL1> There’s probably a lot that can be reused with not a lot of work at all
8:10 PM <~Dan> Mercurium?
8:11 PM <+Kosta_FL> Mercurium is a sort of liquid metal that needs energy to manifest or extend from the hilt
8:12 PM <~Dan> Cool. 🙂
8:12 PM <+Kosta_FL> I think you can use a lot of talents from MYZ in Coriolis, but certainly not all 🙂
8:12 PM <+Nils_FL1> It’s certanly focused on the Icons
8:12 PM <+Nils_FL1> but there are a lot of variations across the Horizon
8:12 PM <~Dan> To what extent does the game cover alien fauna?
8:13 PM <+JohnK> That sounds intriguing, Nils_FL… what sort of variation are we taking about here?
8:13 PM <+Kosta_FL> There are beliefs and worshipping of ancestors, animal spirits and even the Dark between the Stars, but most believe in the nine Icons
8:13 PM <+Kosta_FL> Dan: I just love monsters so there are a lot of them 🙂
8:14 PM <~Dan> Oh? How many? 🙂
8:14 PM <+Kosta_FL> From beast to djinni and darkmorphs as well as technological artifacts
8:15 PM <+Nils_FL1> There are local gods that have come to be seen as an aspect of an Icon (but originates from something else)
8:15 PM <+Kosta_FL> Don’t know the number exactly, but more than the usual sci-fi game I’ve read (Core rules)
8:15 PM <~Dan> Cool. I love monsters, too. 🙂
8:16 PM <+JohnK> Thanks for the information on religious, oh Swedish gurus! 🙂 Much appreciated.
8:16 PM <+Kosta_FL> 🙂
8:16 PM <+Kosta_FL> Have we missed any Qs?
8:17 PM <~Dan> I think you’re caught up. 🙂
8:17 PM <~Dan> Are there cybernetics in the setting?
8:17 PM <+Nils_FL1> For example, some tribes of nomads on Dabaran worship a strange apelike giant statue
8:17 PM <+Kosta_FL> Yes there is, as talents
8:18 PM <+Kosta_FL> Cybernetics and bionics are handled as talents
8:18 PM <+Nils_FL1> which they believe is a spirit
8:18 PM <+GenoFoxx> so King Kong is an Icon?
8:18 PM <+Nils_FL1> haha no
8:18 PM <~Dan> King Ikong
8:18 PM <+Nils_FL1> there are no known giant apes I’m afraid
8:18 PM <~Dan> Awwww…
8:19 PM <+Kosta_FL> But King Macaque is an Icon on Mira
8:19 PM <~Dan> How do you distinguish between cybernetics and bionics?
8:19 PM <+Nils_FL1> but there is certanly a bit of a pulp element to parts of the setting
8:19 PM <+Kosta_FL> So what is the Jade Ape Idol? Nils_FL?
8:20 PM <+MidnightBlue> I do love Pulp.
8:20 PM <+Kosta_FL> Bionics you wont be able to see normaly, a PC being fast, smarter or something else
8:20 PM <+JohnK> You do realise that I’m going to go ape for this game, don’t you folks. (Puns aside.) 🙂
8:21 PM <+Kosta_FL> Some nomads in teh outer systems might have weirder morphs with tails and extra hearts but thats not the normal thing
8:21 PM <+Nils_FL1> I meant living giant apes 🙂
8:22 PM <+Kosta_FL> But it’s important to know that Coriolis is not cyberpunk, its not that everybody has cybernetic enhancements
8:22 PM <+MidnightBlue> So have we already talked about aliens/sub-humans yet? I believe it was stated that there wouldn’t be aliens, but there were some playable options that weren’t exactly human either.
8:23 PM <+Kosta_FL> There are semi-intelligences
8:23 PM <+Kosta_FL> and humanites
8:23 PM <+MidnightBlue> Thank you, I forgot the terms. How do they differ?
8:23 PM <+Nils_FL1> true, you can play a nekatra, skavara or an ekilibri
8:23 PM <~Dan> What are those species like?
8:23 PM <+Nils_FL1> but that’s not the default, they are looked at as smart animals in most cultures
8:23 PM <+Kosta_FL> Humanites are bioengineered humans with the trait transferable to their offspring, basically a new human race
8:24 PM <+Kosta_FL> The Nekatar for example must be owned by a human to be allowed in certain spacestations etc
8:24 PM <~Dan> Like Bladerunner Replicants that can reproduce?
8:24 PM <+MidnightBlue> Smart animals…so like playing one of the apes in the Planet of the Apes prequels…before they took over.
8:25 PM <+Kosta_FL> Skavara are like small badgers but can’t really articulate like humans and communicate by growling and signs
8:25 PM <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Guest85!)
8:25 PM <+Nils_FL1> The Nekatra are fearsome beasts
8:25 PM <+Kosta_FL> Yes Dan – that would be humanites
8:26 PM <+Nils_FL1> but it’s important to know that the default is humans
8:27 PM <+Nils_FL1> it’s a humancentric setting
8:27 PM <+Kosta_FL> The ekilibri are small lemur-like creatures and finally the desdemodu that are huge, a pup would be like a small elephant – a telepatic elephant, or so some xenologist believe
8:27 PM <+Nils_FL1> while some claim that the Emissaries could be true intelligent aliens
8:27 PM <+MidnightBlue> What are you taking about Nils? I’m porting over mutant animals from Genlab Alpha! 🙂 Shoot…so much for not staying on long. That’s my deadline. Sorry to go, but I’ll catch you all back on the KS tomorrow! Thanks for doing this!
8:28 PM <~Dan> Bye, MidnightBlue!
8:28 PM <+Kosta_FL> So the game does not encourage you to play semi-intelligenceses
8:28 PM <~Dan> Come by any time!
8:28 PM <~Dan> What else could the Emissaries be if not aliens?
8:28 PM <+Nils_FL1> hehe, go ahead, we do love monkeys in Coriolis, and there’s a lot of animals for sure
8:28 PM <+Kosta_FL> But you have the option.
8:28 PM <+Kosta_FL> Monkey-emissary
8:29 PM <+Kosta_FL> Just kiddin 🙂
8:29 PM <+JohnK> Time for me to get to other things this evening here in Ottawa. (I can’t take the puns no more, no more… Just kidding!)
8:29 PM <~Dan> Take care, JohnK!
8:29 PM <~Dan> Come back soon!
8:30 PM <+JohnK> Thanks to Nils_FL1 and Kosta_FL for doing this chat tonight, and for answering all my questions on the game! 🙂 You guys rock! 🙂
8:30 PM <+Nils_FL1> Hehe, it’s getting a bit late here as well (in the middle of the night here in dark cold Sweden).
8:30 PM <+Nils_FL1> Thanks John!
8:30 PM <+JohnK> Good night, all! 🙂
8:30 PM <+Jigglypuff> Thanks for the Q&A
8:30 PM <+Nils_FL1> Hope you’ll enjoy the game
8:30 PM <~Dan> Would you guys like to wrap things up, then?
8:30 PM <+JohnK> (And I’ll see some of you back on the KS tomorrow!)
8:30 PM <+JohnK> Bye.
8:30 PM <+Kosta_FL> Thanks folks, but we still have half an hour right?
8:31 PM <~Dan> You do, but we can call it an early night if you guys are wearing down. 🙂
8:31 PM <+Nils_FL1> Ah, sure we can do more questions
8:31 PM <~Dan> Okay!
8:31 PM <+Nils_FL1> No that’s fine 🙂
8:31 PM <+Kosta_FL> I’m cool
8:31 PM <~Dan> (Howdy, Lin_Chong!)
8:32 PM <~Dan> What games influenced your setting?
8:32 PM <~Dan> (If any.)
8:32 PM <+Nils_FL1> Good question, a bunch
8:32 PM <+Nils_FL1> RPGs: Blue Planet, Fading Suns, Traveller, 2300AD, Transhuman Space
8:33 PM <+Kosta_FL> Eclipse phase
8:33 PM <~Dan> An interesting mix!
8:33 PM <~Dan> (Welcome, Guest29!)
8:33 PM <+Nils_FL1> Bulldogs!, SWN
8:33 PM <+Jigglypuff> Are there ship building rules? or just the ships we get in the book and the unlocked goals one?
8:33 PM <+Kosta_FL> There are rules to build ships
8:33 PM <+Jigglypuff> cool
8:33 PM <+Nils_FL1> The Homeworld series
8:34 PM <+Kosta_FL> And to modify in the game
8:34 PM <~Dan> What are the attributes, and how broad are the skills?
8:34 PM <+Kosta_FL> But a lot of setting is influenced by literature – scifi of course
8:34 PM <+Nils_FL1> We’re big scifi fans so we love a whole bunch of games
8:36 PM <+Kosta_FL> The attributes are strength, wits, agility and empathy
8:37 PM <+Nils_FL1> Theres four attributes: Strength, Cool, Empathy and Wits
8:37 PM <+Nils_FL1> sorry agility is the correct translation
8:38 PM <+Nils_FL1> There are 16 skills
8:39 PM <+Nils_FL1> The general ones are: Dexterity, Force, Infiltration, Manipulate, Melee Combat, Observation, Ranged Combat, Survival
8:40 PM <+Nils_FL1> The advanced ones are: Command, Culture, Data Djinn, Medicurgy, Mystic Powers, Pilot, Science, Technology
8:40 PM <+Nils_FL1> So they are pretty broad
8:40 PM <~Dan> Mystic Powers?
8:40 PM <+Kosta_FL> Yep, connected to specific talents
8:41 PM <~Dan> Can you say a bit more about those?
8:41 PM <+Kosta_FL> Some actually think it’s a disease
8:41 PM <+Nils_FL1> Correct. Mystics are a new thing in the Horizon. They started turning up at the same time as the Emissaries rose from the depths of Xene.
8:41 PM <+Nils_FL1> They are shunned and feared
8:42 PM <+Nils_FL1> Some call it the Taint
8:43 PM <+Nils_FL1> although some claim to be blessed by the Icons
8:43 PM <+Kosta_FL> There are of course rumors that some fakirs and yogis have had mystic power before the Emissaries but who knows.
8:45 PM <~Dan> What can these powers accomplish?
8:46 PM <+Kosta_FL> Telepathy, telekinesis and understandign xeno-artifacts
8:47 PM <+Kosta_FL> And more of course. But you have to have a specific talent to use your Mystic Power
8:48 PM <~Dan> In the time remaining, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to bring up?
8:48 PM <+Jigglypuff> any draw back to using mystic talents? Like say in Dark Heresy you have downsides to using powers?
8:49 PM <+Nils_FL1> Yes, they generate Darkness points
8:49 PM <+Kosta_FL> You generate Darkness points
8:51 PM <~Dan> Oh, quick aside: For anyone feeling generous, my virtual tip jar is here: (Link: https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/)https://gmshoe.wordpress.com/the-gmshoes-tip-jar/ 🙂
8:51 PM <+Kosta_FL> Well, we’re planing more stuff when the game is released, a campaing
8:51 PM <~Dan> Oh? That sounds promising.
8:52 PM <~Dan> Do you have anything else planned for the game line?
8:52 PM <+Kosta_FL> It’s called Mercy of the Icons and will let the PCs engage with the powers of the Horizon and also discover some of the mysteries of the setting.
8:53 PM <~Dan> (Howdy, Ettin!)
8:53 PM <+Nils_FL1> The grand campaign, Mercy of the Icons is the big one. But we also have a slew of smaller books up our sleeve
8:54 PM <~Dan> Cool. 🙂
8:55 PM <~Dan> Thanks very much for staying up at such an unholy hour to chat with us, guys!
8:55 PM <+Kosta_FL> There will be an Atlas compendium, as part of the KS, that wll describe some systems in the Horizon and also some scenario locations.
8:55 PM <+Kosta_FL> No worries, it’s been a pleasure 🙂
8:55 PM <+Nils_FL1> Thanks for having us!
8:55 PM <~Dan> If you’ll give me just a moment, I’ll get the log posted and get you the link. 🙂
8:56 PM <+Jigglypuff> yup you got my pledge since Genlab Alpha was really high quality. =)
8:56 PM <+Kosta_FL> 🙂
8:56 PM <+Kosta_FL> Excellent Dan!
8:56 PM <+Nils_FL1> Thanks, hope you’ll like Coriolis too!
