[19:02] <+JMThompson> Hello all and good evening. I am Jonathan M. Thompson, the head of Battlefield Press and the chief designer on the new Ninja High School the Anime and Manga Role Playing Game. Ninja High School was developed by Ben Dunn 30 years ago, and has been a steady seller ever since.
[19:03] <+JMThompson> It was considered to be one of the first truly American entries into the manga genre
[19:04] <+JMThompson> We have secured a license to develop the property into the first ever RPG for it, to help celebrate its 30 year run.
[19:04] <+JMThompson> (done)
[19:04] <~Dan> Thanks, JMThompson!
[19:04] <~Dan> The floor is open to questions!
[19:04] <~Dan> Can you tell us a bit about the premise of the setting?
[19:05] <+JAZilla> NJHS is something of a manga melting pot. Lots of diverse backgrounds and powers. How will the game handle that?
[19:06] <+GenoFoxx> How is it different than ‘Teenagers from Outer Space’?
[19:06] <+JMThompson> It is set in a small Midwestern town known as Quagmire. The local high school has several interesting characters, that get into all kinds of trouble. The primary characters are a regular student, the heir to a ninja clan and a reluctant alien princess. It is a place where everything is happening.
[19:06] <~Dan> (Question pause after GenoFoxx’s question.)
[19:07] <+JMThompson> GF: I dont really know, I am not familiar with TFOS except by name and reputation.

[19:08] <+GenoFoxx> can you actually do stun damage to an opponent (and your allies) with a pun?
[19:08] <+GenoFoxx> oops
[19:09] <+JMThompson> No, not seen any evidence of that in the source material.

[19:10] <~Dan> Did you see JAZilla’s question, JMThompson?
[19:10] <~Dan> (Howdy, Blazing_Phoenix!)
[19:10] <+JMThompson> No I didnt, but I see it now.
[19:11] <+JMThompson> JAZilla: The game has a series of advantages (we call them Perks) that are designed to emulate that ability. You can buy perks to fly, gained enhanced attributes, etc.
[19:12] <+JAZilla> How will you handle the scaling of Mechs?
[19:13] <+JMThompson> There are no mecha in the core book. That will be handled in future supplements.
[19:13] <~Dan> Is there a character sheet we can see?
[19:14] <+JMThompson> There is no official sheet yet, but after the kickstarter is done we will have one designed by Ben Dunn.
[19:14] <+JAZilla> What else will we see in future books? And will those be part of the stretch goals?
[19:15] <+xyphoid> what style of RPG is it? story-based or more simulation-y?
[19:15] <+JMThompson> But basically the characters have six core attributes that control everything Strength: An estimation of physical power and ability to resist damage. Agility: An indication of balance, limberness, quickness, and full body motor abilities. Charm: A gauge of emotional strength, physical attractiveness, and personality.
[19:15] <+JMThompson> Intellect: A measure of strength of memory and ability to learn. Moxie: Your character’s mental quickness, creativity, and attention to detail. Magic: An estimation of your character’s ability to use Magic
[19:15] <+JMThompson> Skills are linked to the attributes.
[19:16] <+GDjo> what chance is there of fred perry’s gold digger getting it’s own supplement or even compatible game?
[19:17] <+JMThompson> Future books will cover the Zetramen and probably Dimension X
[19:17] <+JMThompson> The chance of having a GD compatible sourcebook is probably 50/50 at this point. We are still trying to work things out with Fred. Its one of the things on my list for supplemental material, along with a Warrior Nun expansion
[19:18] <~Dan> What is the core mechanic?
[19:19] <+JMThompson> We are using a variant of the D6 system mechanic.
[19:20] <+Doctor> Okay, so, I am looking at this as someone who knows nothing of NHS. Based on the art and what I have been able to glean about the comic, it seems a little “twee” (which isn’t necessarily bad). I am a fan of Big Eyes, Small Mouth and other anime/manga influenced games. My question is: If I am not a fan of the comic, what doe this game bring to the table?
[19:20] <+GDjo> if present, how do the healing and death mechanic’s work?
[19:21] <+JMThompson> Its an anime game, which could be played without the setting. The rules while designed with the setting in mind are not totally linked to it.

[19:25] <+JAZilla> I remember R. Talsorian had been talking about a NJHS game back in the 90’s. Were you connected in any way?
[19:26] <+JMThompson> I was not connected in anyway, my connection to RTal is just as a consumer and a brief meeting with Mike Pondsmith in about 2005
[19:26] <+Doctor> I noticed your KS offers Savage Worlds and (hopefully) Fate versions of the game. How well do you think the rules carry the spirit of the game into these systems?
[19:27] <+JMThompson> I believe that Savage Worlds will do it well, and in theory FATE should do the same. I wont actually be working on the mechanics of the FATE version.
[19:28] <+Doctor> Anything stand out as translating really well?
[19:28] <~Dan> You mentioned the core rules being a variant of D6. What are some of the differences?
[19:29] <+JMThompson> So far I have built a couple of the main characters using just the core SW rules, and they are looking very nice. Savage Worlds is a bit more complex than the core D6 version, but is one of my favorite systems.
[19:30] <+JMThompson> We are using a variant of the Legend D6 system, the one they built for super heroes. We have scaled it back a bit to try to get a nice happy medium between between Star Wars D6 and DC Heroes (Legend D6)
[19:31] <~Dan> I know there’s something different about the core mechanic of Legend D6 but can’t recall what it is.
[19:32] <+JMThompson> It had used a point buy system, we eliminated it in order to use a Dice Pool like from the original Star Wars RPG. Characters have roughly 30 D6 to build their own characters, these are split between Attributes, Skills and Perks.

[19:33] <+Doctor> (Q&A Monk)
[19:33] <+GDjo> in every RPG based from a series(doctor who, DBZ usagi yojimbo ghostbusters etc.) i have, they give detailed info on the series setting/event’s and full character sheet’s or entry’s on the mojor and supporting characters. this way the players can interact with the world and it’s cast, will the NHS RPG have the same world and character data?
[19:35] <+JMThompson> Yes, We have done a couple of things. 1) we developed a series of pre generated character archetypes. So that people can play with a ready made character (which is customizable if you want) and we have about a half dozen characters from the comic itself. So not only can you interact with them, you could play them if you and your GM agree.
[19:36] <+JMThompson> My idea was this.. if you are a fan of the comic, but were not a gamer, I wanted you to be able to pick up the game, grab a few friends and then start playing within 30 to 45 mins at most. Something you could buy at a con and yall grab a table and just start up.
[19:36] <~Dan> How powerful are starting characters?
[19:37] <+JMThompson> It is a D6 system because frankly, I dont know of anywhere you cant buy a D6 now days (or can even borrow them from most traditional board games)
[19:37] <+JMThompson> Dan, please rephrase the question. Archetypes or built characters?

[19:37] <~Dan> Built characters.
[19:37] <~Dan> (wb, DebraHP)
[19:38] <~Dan> Like, could you compare them in power level to popular superheroes?
[19:38] <+DebraHP> (thnks, Dan)
[19:39] <+JMThompson> The built characters are probably about 80% of the level of the starting characters in the first issue. Enough to take them on if need be but not so overpowering you cant have fun.
[19:39] <+JMThompson> If you were strong enough you could uproot a full grown elm, which is done by one of the characters. but she also bends a steel beam. Anything is possible.
[19:40] <~Dan> Sounds like upper-end street-level heroes, then, like Spider-man or Luke Cage.
[19:41] <~Dan> Or does it get more powerful than that?
[19:41] <+GenoFoxx> comic wise yes
[19:41] <+JMThompson> It can get more powerful than that, experience is the key.

[19:42] <+JAZilla> Humor and a bit of silliness are common in the comics. How will the rules support that, or is that just a function of play style?
[19:42] <~Dan> Good question!

[19:43] <~Dan> (brb)
[19:43] <+JMThompson> Its more of a play style, not everyone is able to play humor in RPGs. I run a lot of Slayers for example, and I have one guy that cant do it and he plays the straight man the whole time.
[19:44] <+JMThompson> Yes, if WN and GD are secured I will announce it on the current KS in its updates.
[19:44] <+JAZilla> If you’re referring to the anime Slayers – I worked on that.
[19:45] <+JMThompson> The RPG, or the anime?
[19:45] <+JMThompson> And yes I was referring to that.
[19:45] <+JAZilla> The anime series.
[19:46] <+JMThompson> While a bit off topic, I am a huge fan of the series. What was it you did on it?
[19:47] <+JAZilla> Marketing and production. I also worked on Utena, Toshinden, Patlabor, Lodoss and more than I can remember.
[19:47] <+GDjo> I’ve watched all of those at one point or another.
[19:48] <+JAZilla> While I was there, I worked with Benn Dunn. He was going to make an A-Ko figure.
[19:48] <+JMThompson> Lodoss is another favorite of mine, running a game now that was inspired by it (and yes I know the story of how it came to be).
[19:49] <+JAZilla> I wanted CPM to license and translate the Lodoss game, but I couldn’t convince the boss.
[19:50] <+GDjo> I’m no longer allowed to customize mecha without authorization and supervision in rpg’s.
[19:50] <~Dan> I take it that the game has a broad power system?
[19:51] <+JMThompson> It does. Its trying to be as friendly as possible in the outset
[19:51] <~Dan> Is it more of an effect-based or cafeteria system?
[19:52] <+GDjo> cafeteria?
[19:52] <~Dan> I think that’s the term. I’m referring there to systems in which you pick from a list of pre-designed powers, like “Weather Control,” for example.
[19:52] <~Dan> As opposed to building powers based upon the desired effects.

[19:54] <+JMThompson> Since I have designed it with the non gamer in mind, there is a power list with descriptive text.
[19:55] <~Dan> How do you distinquish between powers and magic?
[19:55] <+JAZilla> Question from a friend of mine: How well will it stand alone as a fan guide to NJHS?
[19:57] <+JMThompson> Powers are perks, the most complicated thing in the book is Magic, but thats just because anime magic is funny and we cant possibly account for everything so we tried to make it a little free form as it were.
[19:58] <~Dan> Can you give an example of how magic works?
[19:58] <+JMThompson> It has write ups of the powers, the city and the high school. Plus a map of Quagmire and the high school
[19:59] <+JMThompson> Magic spells have a target number that you have to roll against to cast them. There are a few premade spells in the book, but then there is a set of charts so you can build your own spell. You pick the Magic skill it derives from and then build it based on effect, damage, range, duration. Then you would roll against that target number. If it works you can
[19:59] <+JMThompson> add it to your “spellbook” if your GM allows.
[20:00] <+GDjo> is there a specific issue number you use’d as a cut-off point? in other words did you just use everything up to issue XX for the game, and if so what issue did you stop at?

[20:02] <+JMThompson> Not really, but the “wilder” the result the more difficult it would be to actually cast the spell.

[20:11] <+JMThompson> Even our graphic designer is a fan of NHS and was so excited when he found out that he would be able to raid Ben’s personal storage space for art.
[20:12] <~Dan> How dangerous is combat? Are PCs in actual danger of dying?
[20:13] <+JMThompson> In theory, yes, you could lose a character. That was Ben’s suggestion. He was of the opinion that character loss should be a viable option, even if it doesnt happen.
[20:14] <~Dan> Does combat work any differently from standard D6?
[20:14] <+GDjo> I’ve actually had to house rule death system’s into game’s a few time’s, otherwise combat has less tension.
[20:14] <+JMThompson> Not really, its still Dice roll vs Target Number

[20:36] <+JMThompson> No, while that is the majority of the characters. They can be the guy down the street that tinkers with the devices, can be a teacher, could be an inventor. Sometimes things will overlap, so if I wanted to play a ninja, I could either be from somewhere else, or I could be a student at the high school.
[20:37] <~Dan> What do the PCs do? What opportunities for adventure exist?
[20:37] <+ChaosSun> so what exactly a Pip and extra die? or extra point?
[20:39] <+JMThompson> Pips are a more advanced rule, 3 pips equals a whole die, and you can divide up your die pool in creation by doing things like 4d +1 and 3d+2 for total of 8d.
[20:40] <+JMThompson> Adventures are also a kind of a catch all. You could be plagued by bad luck and find out a demon is responsible for causing it, and you now try to figure out how to get rid of it.
