[13:29] <+VengerSatanis> I’m Venger As’Nas Satanis. I usually go by Venger Satanis or VS for short.
[13:29] <+VengerSatanis> I’ve written quite a few RPG books over the last few years.
[13:30] <+VengerSatanis> From Liberation of the Demon Slayer to The Islands of Purple-Haunted Putrescence to Crimson Dragon Slayer and my latest, Alpha Blue, will be released sometime in January.
[13:30] <+VengerSatanis> Most of it is OSR / O5R / or neo-old school stuff of my own design.
[13:31] <+VengerSatanis> Science fantasy and gonzo are my main jams.
[13:32] <+VengerSatanis> Just turned 41 a couple weeks ago. Live in WI. Wife and 3 daughters. I guess that’s it…
[13:33] <+Naeddyr> what is your favourite pasta
[13:33] <+VengerSatanis> Fettuccine Alfredo. And I can make the alfredo sauce myself.
[13:33] <~Dan> The floor is open to questions. (Obviously. 🙂 )
[13:34] <~Dan> Now, did I read that “Islands” is the sequel to “Liberation”?
[13:35] <+VengerSatanis> Not really, they take place on the same fictional world, Razira, but aren’t that linked, except for tone, genre, etc. Both are science fantasy, OSR type books.
[13:35] <+VengerSatanis> The Cthulhu Mythos features in both, but then Lovecraft’s stuff is present in pretty much everything I write.
[13:36] <~Dan> How would you describe “science fantasy” in this context?
[13:36] <+VengerSatanis> A combination of sword & sorcery type fantasy and typical sci-fi like spaceships, lasers, robots, and stuff like that.
[13:37] <+GenoFoxx> robots…? as in mecha?
[13:37] <+GenoFoxx> or just robots?
[13:37] *** Sam has quit IRC: Disintegrated: I regret nothing!
[13:37] <+VengerSatanis> More like the Terminator or Lost in Space kind of robots.
[13:38] <+GenoFoxx> 😦
[13:38] <~Dan> What (if any) is the rationale for the blend of science and technology?
[13:38] <+VengerSatanis> On a surface level, it’s that peanut butter and chocolate taste better combined than separately.
[13:39] <+VengerSatanis> But there’s more to it than that.
[13:39] <+VengerSatanis> More possibilities for stories, it opens up all kinds of stories, and begs the question – how did both fantasy and sci-fi come to be in the same world?
[13:39] *** Cassiemouse has quit IRC: Disintegrated: Leaving

[13:41] <~Dan> Is magic standard D&D magic, or do you have your own take on the subject?
[13:42] <+VengerSatanis> I prefer when magic has a chance to go off the deep end, like the possibility for supernatural side effects. I love DCC’s mercurial magic system.
[13:43] <+VengerSatanis> D&D magic is great, but sometimes I just want something else or something new.
[13:43] <+VengerSatanis> And sword & sorcery type magic is slightly different – darker with more of a downside, like human sacrifice for magic to work.
[13:43] <~Dan> For those unfamiliar, can you say a bit abou thow DCC’s mercurial magic works?
[13:44] <+VengerSatanis> When you cast a spell, you roll a d100. More often than not, something good, bad, or weird happens when your character casts that particular spell.
[13:45] <+VengerSatanis> It adds another dimension to magic use. I like a lot of things going on at once, even if some are happening in the background or only have the potential to occur, become noteworthy, blow up the sun, etc.
[13:45] <~Dan> Does that apply to all forms of magic?
[13:46] <+VengerSatanis> For DCC or my personally?
[13:46] <+VengerSatanis> me personally.
[13:46] <~Dan> For your setting.
[13:47] <+VengerSatanis> It depends on the book. With Crimson Dragon Slayer, there’s a risk of upsetting a demon lord if you critically fail when casting a spell. For Purple, there’s a table to roll on (like DCC) when casting a spell on the islands.
[13:48] *** Naeddyr has quit IRC: Client exited
[13:48] <+VengerSatanis> There’s usually a 1 or 2 in 6 chance of this or that happening whenever a character does something cool, unusual, or just routine. It depends.
[13:49] <+VengerSatanis> You can keep going with the questions.
[13:50] <~Dan> So in Purple, the issue with magic is related directly to the islands?
[13:50] <+VengerSatanis> Yes, the islands are a special place where really weird stuff can happen. My original inspiration was the island from Lost, but done in a science fantasy kind of way.
[13:51] * ~Dan nods
[13:51] <~Dan> Is there a Lost-like reason for the PCs to arrive there?
[13:52] <+VengerSatanis> I provided quite a few possible reasons for PCs to arrive.
[13:52] <+VengerSatanis> One I’ve used a couple times is that all the PCs are prisoners on a ship going to the purple islands.
[13:53] <+VengerSatanis> Some reasons are more personal or esoteric, like being drawn to the islands because of a dream or vision.
[13:54] * ~Dan nods
[13:55] <~Dan> Is there any force that actively prevents escape from the Islands?
[13:55] <+VengerSatanis> Should I send out a g+ thing asking people to swing by and ask questions, if they want?
[13:55] <~Dan> Certainly!

[13:56] <+TrevorKrontz_Soluna> Thanks Dan
[13:56] <~Dan> More specifically, who/what is the opposition?
[13:57] <+VengerSatanis> Ok, just sent an email out.
[13:58] <+VengerSatanis> The purple islands themselves have a will of their own. It’s a random table, but GMs can pick and choose as well.
[13:58] <+VengerSatanis> Also, there’s the Purple Putrescence itself. Basically, a gigantic godlike monster that drifts over the islands, harassing PCs and stuff.
[13:59] <~Dan> I assume that’s the purple thing on the cover?
[13:59] <+VengerSatanis> Yes, to the left of the woman’s butt.
[13:59] <+Vorthon> Well, that’s a phrase I never thought I’d see in here.
[13:59] <~Dan> Heh. “Things I didn’t expect to read today…”
[13:59] * ~Dan high-fives Vorthon
[14:00] <+TrevorKrontz_Soluna> Sorry if you already went over this how does one build a PC. By that I mean what are the characters abilities and how do they use them
[14:00] <+VengerSatanis> In Purple or another book?
[14:00] <+TrevorKrontz_Soluna> In Purple
[14:01] <~Dan> Actually, that’s a good question. You mentioned that it’s OSR prior to Trevor’s arrival, so I’m assuming it’s old-school D&D for the most part, but do you have your own races and/or classes?
[14:01] <+VengerSatanis> It’s O5R (OSR and 5e) compatible. So, it assumes you’ll be using some other RPG or core rules, system, etc.

[14:01] <~Dan> Huh. O5R. I haven’t heard that term before.
[14:02] <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Winter!)
[14:02] <+VengerSatanis> Purple contains, I think, just one class. It’s a sort of monk – though one reviewer likened him more to a cultist… which is pretty accurate.
[14:02] * +Winter sits on Dan.
[14:02] <~Dan> Oh, yes… The Winter formerly known as Corvus…?
[14:02] <+Winter> Si.
[14:02] <+Maelthra> o/
[14:02] * +Winter waves to Venger.
[14:02] <~Dan> Good to see you again. 🙂
[14:02] <+VengerSatanis> I think I invented it, but as soon as I wrote it out, a day later I saw one or two other people using it. So, might have been a coincidence.
[14:03] <+VengerSatanis> Hey!
[14:03] <+TrevorKrontz_Soluna> Oh okay. So what can the cultist do that makes him different from monks
[14:03] <+Winter> You know me from G+, Venger, Audrey Winter.
[14:03] <+VengerSatanis> I’ve heard of people using Mutant Future (post apocalyptic OSR) with Purple and it worked well.
[14:03] <+VengerSatanis> Have you ever seen the movie Scanners?
[14:04] <+TrevorKrontz_Soluna> yes
[14:04] <+VengerSatanis> Well, you can do that head explode-y thing to people.
[14:04] <+TrevorKrontz_Soluna> okay that’s coold
[14:05] <+VengerSatanis> In a nutshell, that kind of explains Purple. It’s awesomeness I saw somewhere and I borrowed it and changed it a little and then gave it some mechanics.
[14:05] <~Dan> Nothing wrong with that, IMHO.
[14:05] <~Dan> Is the scifi aspect something unique to the Islands, or is that something that exists in the world at large?
[14:05] <+VengerSatanis> Also, the monk can persuade people to do stuff, like a trusted adviser whispering in his master’s ear. Where the adviser actually becomes more powerful and has more influence. That was the intention.
[14:06] <+TrevorKrontz_Soluna> So the advisor is more dangerous than the master
[14:06] <+VengerSatanis> Well, Liberation has sci-fi stuff in it – like a big spaceship. They both take place on Razira. But in Purple, I don’t talk about the “mainland” much.
[14:07] <+VengerSatanis> He could be if he gets to a high enough level.
[14:07] <+VengerSatanis> Usually, when I run Purple these days it’s at a convention. That means I leave out the nuance and just get to the laser swords and cyber-dinosaurs.
[14:08] <~Dan> Cyber-dinosaurs, you say?
[14:08] <+Winter> Cyber-dinosaurs… with laser swords.
[14:08] <+VengerSatanis> Yeah, there’s a lot of weird monsters on the islands. I’m certain that with the right rolling on a table, PCs can encounter a cyber dinosaur and equally weird stuff.

[14:09] <+TrevorKrontz_Soluna> what would you say is the strangest creature on the island
[14:09] <+VengerSatanis> Besides the Purple Putrescence? Give me a minute…
[14:10] <+VengerSatanis> There’s a being made of weird light with some alien and unknowable desires. That might be the strangest.
[14:11] <~Dan> Sounds like Yog-Sothoth.
[14:11] <+VengerSatanis> And since my stuff is generally O5R science fantasy, it should all be compatible with each other. So, you could run Purple or Liberation with Crimson Dragon Slayer, for instance.
[14:11] <+VengerSatanis> Sort of. I don’t think this creature is that powerful, but every once in awhile I like to go cosmic and really out there. Something that the PCs just can’t even begin to relate to.
[14:12] <~Dan> Now, what is Crimson Dragon Slayer? Is that its own system?
[14:12] <+VengerSatanis> Occasionally, I write in a sort of trance state. So, unless I read something mentioned in a review, there’s a chance I don’t even recall what the hell I wrote a year or two ago.
[14:13] <+VengerSatanis> Yes, that is its own system. OSR, but with a d6 dice pool and meant to be humorous gonzo science fantasy.
[14:14] <+VengerSatanis> Sometimes, I’ll pick up a book that I wrote 6 months ago and will laugh at something I read because I forgot that I wrote it.
[14:14] <~Dan> I see… Can you go into a bit more detail on CDS’s core mechanic?
[14:16] <+VengerSatanis> Sure. You roll a certain amount of d6 based on the likelihood of your success. Whatever the highest number in the pool is – that lets you know how well you did. 1 = crit fail, 6 = crit success, and 2 – 5 range in the middle.
[14:16] <+VengerSatanis> It’s a bit like the old West End Games d6 RPGs from the 80s and 90s, except no adding! I’m not fond of math.

[14:18] <~Dan> Cool. Does it use OSR stats?
[14:18] <+VengerSatanis> I included its own system, which is a lighter form of CDS. But yeah, it’s O5R compatible.
[14:19] <+TrevorKrontz_Soluna> Now what is the Aplha Blue setting
[14:19] <+VengerSatanis> It’s a brothel in space, for those who didn’t know. Sorry to get off topic.

[14:21] <~Dan> No, the show’s yours, Venger. Discuss what you like. 🙂
[14:21] <+VengerSatanis> Yeah, and it’s meant to be humorous, a parody, spoof, etc. But it’s also a cool campaign setting with some killer artwork and maps.
[14:21] <+VengerSatanis> Sure, but I didn’t mean to squash and discussion of previously mentioned items. So, we can always go back.
[14:21] <+VengerSatanis> any
[14:22] <+TrevorKrontz_Soluna> How does that system work if i may ask
[14:23] <+VengerSatanis> It’s limited to 1d6, 2d6, or 3d6. 1d6 is for stuff you don’t have much chance at doing, 2d6 is average, and 3d6 is for stuff you have a better than average chance at doing.
[14:24] <+VengerSatanis> If you roll high enough, then you get to roll a set amount of damage dice.
[14:25] <+VengerSatanis> Alpha Blue is meant for action adventure in space. I’m most proud of the “what are you wearing” tables. Those really amuse me.
[14:25] <+TrevorKrontz_Soluna> what are you wearing tabel?

[15:01] <+VengerSatanis> Favorite OSR game (that’s not my own, I assume)?
[15:02] <+SavageGM> Yeah
[15:02] <~Dan> i.e., swords-and-sorcery meets super-technology?

[15:02] *** ChanServ sets mode +v Monochrome_Tide
[15:02] <+VengerSatanis> Maybe early D&D or 5e or DCC.
[15:03] <+VengerSatanis> I’m not sure what to tackle next. Maybe another investigative horror adventure to follow The Outer Presence.
[15:03] *** Monochrome_Tide has quit IRC: Client exited
[15:04] <+VengerSatanis> I don’t discriminate that much with science fantasy. I like mostly sci-fi with a little bit of fantasy (Star Wars), fantasy with a little bit of sci-fi (Krull), and everything in between.
[15:04] *** Silver-sleep has quit IRC: Ping timeout: 484 seconds
[15:04] <+VengerSatanis> Definitely. Thundarr the Barbarian is a perfect blend.
[15:05] <+VengerSatanis> A world of savagery, super-science, and sorcery!
[15:05] <~Dan> Well, let me clarify a bit: Is there any technology between the extremes in Purple? For example, are there modern-day slugthrowers as well as lazer guns, or just the latter?
[15:05] <~Dan> (And yes, Thundarr is awesome.)
[15:05] <+VengerSatanis> There are a few modern-day weapons thrown in, but it’s mostly either magic or lasers.
[15:05] <+SavageGM> Obviously I’m a big post-apoc fan with the mutant epoch, ever thought about dipping into those waters?
[15:06] <+VengerSatanis> I’ve run The Mutant Epoch a few times. It’s a good system, though too much math for me.
[15:06] <+Fasckira> A Venger take on a Mad Max/Fallout set up would be fairly interesting to say the least
[15:06] <+VengerSatanis> The next CDS adventure will be post-apoc.
[15:06] <+SavageGM> Great
[15:07] <+VengerSatanis> Once that’s done, I’ll combine Candy Crypts, No Escape, and the new one together.
[15:07] <+VengerSatanis> Print on demand.
[15:08] <~Dan> If CDS is primarily science fantasy, why the high fantasy-ish name?
[15:09] <+VengerSatanis> I already have the post-apoc artwork in my computer. Just need to write it. Will have to take a couple weeks off now that Alpha Blue is written.
[15:09] <+Fasckira> Classic 80’s game title, Dan
[15:09] <~Dan> Ah, fair enough. 🙂
[15:09] <+VengerSatanis> CDS, focuses more on the fantasy. So, it’s more like Krull.
[15:10] <~Dan> Gotcha.
[15:10] <+VengerSatanis> I’m not sure why I gravitated towards that name, actually.
[15:10] <+VengerSatanis> Or that artwork. Sure, it’s cool. But it doesn’t bash you over the head that it’s supposed to be funny.
[15:11] <+Fasckira> I can easily see it printed on a batch of 8 1.2 inch disks
[15:11] <~Dan> What sort of humor would you compare it to?
[15:11] <+VengerSatanis> I work organically a lot of the time. So, I’ll start a project and not really know where it’ll end up until I’ve finished with it.
[15:11] <~Dan> Fasckira: Heh. Yeah. 🙂
[15:11] <+SavageGM> Go to run fun talk!
[15:11] <+VengerSatanis> That’s a good question. Why type of humor would I compare it to?
[15:11] <~Dan> Bye, SavageGM! Come by any time!
[15:11] <+SavageGM> Thanks
[15:11] <+VengerSatanis> Later.

[15:12] <~Dan> I mean, are you going for “zany”, like Tales from the Floating Vagabond?
[15:12] <+VengerSatanis> Intentionally bad, cheesy 80’s, trying too hard…
[15:13] <+VengerSatanis> Yes, at times. Other times more subtle. I recently tried to buy Tales on ebay, but the company selling it informed me after my purchase that it was just… gone.
[15:13] <+VengerSatanis> I only remember the ads and artwork in Dragon Magazine in the 90s.
[15:13] <~Dan> That sucks. 😦 Well, hang in there. A new edition is on the way.
[15:14] <~Dan> Delayed by health issues, but still on the way. I played it at GenCon last year.
[15:14] <+VengerSatanis> Cool. I’ll probably keep trying. My wife lets me know that my book and DVD buying keeps getting out of control.
[15:14] <+VengerSatanis> I hope they keep some of that old school vibe.
[15:15] <~Dan> They are, but adding some new Shticks as well.
[15:15] <+VengerSatanis> Nice.
[15:15] <~Dan> Like the Bay Effect: An explosion can’t hurt you if you walk away from it slowly and don’t look back.
[15:15] <+VengerSatanis> Cool. Haha.
[15:16] <~Dan> Hmm. Are you familiar with the video Knights of Cydonia?
[15:16] <+VengerSatanis> Let me see…
[15:16] <~Dan> (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3Yc3HhSl1Q)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3Yc3HhSl1Q
[15:16] <~Dan> I ask because that sounds like the kind of humor you’re talking about.
[15:18] <+VengerSatanis> I’m watching it now. Awesome and hilarious!
[15:18] <~Dan> Isn’t it? 🙂
[15:18] <+VengerSatanis> Yeah, that’s it.
[15:18] <~Dan> Go me! 🙂
[15:20] <~Dan> So FYI, VengerSatanis, you’re always welcome to hang out with us and to discuss your work any time you like, so please feel free to stay as long as you like.
[15:20] <~Dan> That said, in what remains of scheduled time, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to mention?
[15:20] <+VengerSatanis> Dumb stuff on purpose is yet another layer or dimension to an RPG. So, I try to include that – especially since I can’t compete with a huge budget full color glossy 300 page book that’s super well known. So, I use humor where I can.
[15:21] <+VengerSatanis> Umm…
[15:21] <+VengerSatanis> Nothing is coming to mind.
[15:22] <~Dan> No problem! We can stick with questions, then.
[15:22] <~Dan> For example…
[15:22] <+VengerSatanis> Ok.
[15:22] <~Dan> …are you generally a fan of dinosaurs in fantasy settings?
[15:23] *** consleepium has quit IRC: Ping timeout: 182 seconds
[15:23] <+VengerSatanis> Generally, I think dinosaurs are a plus. Not for every fantasy setting, but here and there they can add a lot.
[15:23] <~Dan> Agreed.
[15:23] <~Dan> There’s something very swords-and-sorcery about dinosaurs.
[15:23] <+VengerSatanis> Pretty much everything I thought was awesome when I was 10, I still consider awesome to this day.
[15:24] <+VengerSatanis> Yeah, swords & sorcery with dinosaurs would be a great movie, TV show, or RPG.
[15:24] <+Fasckira> Hmm, I want to see purple robed monkeys riding raptors, armed with electric spears and holowhips, chasing down renegade humans.
[15:24] <+VengerSatanis> I’m a huge fan of the original Land of the Lost show.
[15:25] * ~Dan nods
[15:25] <+VengerSatanis> Yeah, that would fit in well with Purple. 🙂
[15:25] <~Dan> Of course, I’m a huge pulp fan, so I’m biased towards dinosaurs anyway.
[15:26] <~Dan> Well, thanks very much for joining us today, Venger!
[15:27] <+VengerSatanis> My pleasure. Thanks for having me. I’ll stop by again soon.
[15:27] <~Dan> Please do! You’re always welcome.
