[20:37] <+Eloy-3EG> The setting is a fictional world inspired by several martial arts films, like The Sorcerer and the White Snake or Journey to the West, as well as some anime, like Naruto: Shippuden or Avatar: The Last Airbender
[20:38] <+Eloy-3EG> In the setting, ninja have existed for thousands of years, living alongside normal people, but in the last decade of so, the Emperor has called the Ninja Crusade, sending his armors to destroy the ninja. This has created an immense war between the two sides and both are going all out
[20:38] <+Eloy-3EG> In the game, there are 10 major clans in the Empire, all of which are available as playable characters, as well as minor clans that have been released in sourcebooks.

[20:43] <+Eloy-3EG> Are Executioners a thing? Yes. They are one of the Empire’s trump cards, since they have the ability to cancel out jutsu used around them. A ninja without jutsu is severely hampered, and that’s their job.
[20:44] <+shadowdragon> ya i was allways wondering why there was not a clan or a aspect of a clan dedicatted for kicking oni back to the deep pits of the nether they came from
[20:45] <+Eloy-3EG> We are planning on discussing Oni more in the book, but only to an extent. The corebook needs to focus on the ninja, not the fringe elements of the setting. However, we have a Stretch Goal set up to write up a whole expansion to give more info on Oni, possibly playing as a half-demon (Inuyasha anyone?) and probably clans that specialize in demon wrangling.

[20:47] <+Eloy-3EG> Why is there not a clan dedicated to vanquishing Oni? Because, Oni are a fairly rare occurrence to be honest. They come up every once in a blue moon, so it would mean the clan was next to useless the rest of the time. lol. That said, I already have ideas for such a clan.

[20:59] <+Eloy-3EG> yes, the new system is called the Chakra System. The core mechanic uses d10 pools, composed of Skill combos. For instance, fixing a wagon would be a Crafts (skill for fixing things) + Travel (skill for vehicles and whatnot), so you’d roll as many dice as you have levels in those two skills.
[20:59] <+shadowdragon> will there be some actual covrage of down time activities when a ninja as not out on a mission training or making the local smithy made for messing with his gear ftrying to fix there own gear

[21:00] <+Eloy-3EG> The system also uses what are called Gifts and Triggers. Gifts give your character a bonus die when using skills for particular purposes, while your Trigger is a way that their gift can also be a curse.

[21:01] <+Eloy-3EG> for instance, a character with the Soldier Profession gets the Gift of +1 bonus to resist pain. They also get the Trigger of owing allegiance to someone else and always having to make a choice between their duty to clan vs their duty to their army

[21:05] <+Eloy-3EG> The setting for The Ninja Crusade 2nd Edition hasn’t changed, except that 1st Edition was very much about surviving against the empire, whereas 2nd Edition is a decade into a war that has taken its toll on the land, the army and the ninja. there have been a few decisive blows on either side, but no one has won. Most have just gotten used to there being a war.

[21:06] <+Eloy-3EG> Downtime activities, right now, don’t have a mechanic for them right now either. Downtime is exactly that, its a time when the characters aren’t necessarily doing anything all that exciting.

Yes, you could technically fight with the Holistics skill if you have a a justification for it. That’s a discussion the group has together and it should fit the scene.

[21:16] <+Eloy-3EG> Like, you won’t be using Holistics instead of fighting to throw a punch. But if you are taking your time to use medical knowledge to land a blow, you may be able to use Holistics as a secondary skill to Fighting in that combo.

But every character displays said magic in different ways. are snake-styled jutsu from the Way of Great Serpents different from of magic from performance jutsu from the Way of the Immaculate Show, yes, in many many ways, but they are still magic.
[21:19] <~Dan> Well, let me rephrase, then: Is everyone using magic/jutsu a ninja by definition?
[21:20] <+Eloy-3EG> Lost and forbidden jutsu will be further detailed in clan books and land books, including those which are being converted. We’ve given the rules for Basic, Moderate and Advanced jutsu in the corebook, but will have Master Jutsu and Forbidden jutsu in sourcebooks.
[21:20] <+shadowdragon> ya svletlania used holistic to percision stryke a a koppa in the last game i just treatted it is a bonus to the attack but seems like there is a better way to do so in 2e
[21:21] <+Eloy-3EG> if you use jutsu, you are a ninja, yes. If you’re not a ninja, then you’re not using jutsu. You’ll have some other awesome way to beat a ninja. even with jutsu, ninja are not unstoppable. the Silver Blades are the samurai of the setting and they can’t be matched with a sword.
[21:21] <+fluffykins0> What constitutes a forbidden jutsu? Recoiling serpents already have some fairly unsavory ones, as do several other clans
[21:21] <+Eloy-3EG> the Executioners have the ability to negate jutsu used around them.
[21:21] <+Drewbe> Can you learn powers from said Oni? This is in line with the forbidden magic question
[21:21] <+Eloy-3EG> The Golden Lions are the Empire’s ninja and use jutsu agains the ninja, stealing the ninjas’ secrets with every win.
[21:22] <+Eloy-3EG> Forbidden Jutsu are rarely because they aren’t nice. It’s usually because they erode one’s soul or affect the very nature of ki in the environment.
[21:23] <+Eloy-3EG> the Oni material hasn’t been written yet, so it could be just about anything.

[21:27] <+Eloy-3EG> The system, as of right now, is exactly where I want it to be. I’m in a completely different headspace from when I designed 1st Edition, and I couldn’t be happier with the changes taking place and the work the design team as put into this.

[21:28] <+Eloy-3EG> as for the Setting, I would love to release books that detail the whole world and eventually come out with a book of possible endings to the Ninja Crusade and then a book about what comes next. We are also working on organizing a Living Ninja Crusade campaign that will let players help out with the direction that goes in.

Monsters, there aren’t a lot of those, at least not in the corebook. this is the struggle of designing a corebook. There is a lot of awesome stuff you’d love to put in there, but you also don’t want to kitchen sink the book and make it 400 pages with no actual focus on anything.
[21:31] <+Eloy-3EG> The Ninja Crusade 2nd Edition is about ninja vs. the empire, ninja vs. ninja and ninja vs. the world. It is about ninja. expanding on enemies and monsters and oni only comes after laying the ground work on what it is to be a ninja. that’s the approach we’re taking with this.
[21:32] <+shadowdragon> so then some point there may be rules for playing the crusade from the empire pov then
[21:32] <+Eloy-3EG> those other mystical elements, like demons and spirits, are there, but not the focus. That’s why expansion material is so important to a game like this.

[21:32] <+Eloy-3EG> the general sourcebooks don’t really do anything to advance the story. They give you a snapshot of what it’s like to be in a clan at this stage of the world.

[21:39] <+Eloy-3EG> it;’s hard to talk about what will come in the future, when we’re still so hard at work with the current project.
[21:39] <+shadowdragon> so then sinister is still just a fandom project for the moment or is it the way the kids think that sinister is the future of ninja crusades timeline
[21:40] <+Eloy-3EG> so, yes, in Battles everyone gets an Initiative order based on their rating. that dictates when it’s your turn.
[21:40] <+Eloy-3EG> then you go through the steps when it’s your turn.
[21:40] <+Eloy-3EG> Step 1 – Figure out your Action: What is it that you want to do? This ranges from simple attacks to battle feints to using a Jutsu and many others.
[21:40] <+Eloy-3EG> Step 2 – How is the defender responding: If the target has a chance to defend, they choose how they want to do it. This can be blocking/parrying, dodging, ducking, bracing for impact, etc.
[21:41] <+Eloy-3EG> Step 3 – Determine Dicepools: Like we stated in the previous Update, the skill combos are very flexible. Attacking can take a number of difference forms, such as using the Fighting still to throw a punch, Fighting + Athletics for a tackle, or the Crafts skill if you are activating a trap or a Yang + Marksman roll to activate a Jutsu.
[21:41] <+Eloy-3EG> Likewise, a Speed + Survival check may be used to find cover in the woods or an Athletics check to dodge out of the way of an incoming attack. It is this step that both players (the attacker and defender) make a case for what Skills are important for this check.
[21:41] <+Eloy-3EG> Step 4 – Resolve Effects/Damage: Once you know who the winner is (the one with more successes), then you can resolve the effects. If the Defender wins, this usually means they are safe from the effects, but there are times (like with certain poisons) where a success means the effects are simply reduced.
[21:41] <+Eloy-3EG> In the case of the attacker winning, the effects usually involve either physical damage or mental damage. Damage is calculated by adding the number of successes, any Boost damage, any Dynamic Action damage, any additions from Jutsu, and anything their weapon they are using adds.

So, if I rolled 5 successes to hit you and you rolled 2 successes to evade, that means I hit you for 4 damage (3 net successes + 1 from boost)

[21:49] <+Eloy-3EG> The plan is for it to be about 240 pages or so. We’re getting first drafts in this week, so we’ll be able to give a better idea of exact page count once we have that. Right now, though, we’ve allotted a higher word count than 1st ed, and that book was 220 pages.
