[19:00] <+Anthony> My name is Anthony Ford, and my friends and I are making Post Replica
[19:00] <+Anthony> It’s a tabletop RPG where you play as an android hidden among humanity
[19:01] <+Anthony> It takes place in a future dystopia where huamnity rejects technology
[19:01] <+Anthony> *humanity
[19:01] <+Anthony> Players in Post Replica have to contend with their fellow androids who have gone mad and become twisted monsters
[19:02] <+Anthony> And human inquisitors, called Reclaimers, that are trying to expose and ‘retire’ androids
[19:02] <+Anthony> What is really unique about Post Replica is our companion app
[19:02] <+Anthony> It works on tablets, smartphones, and computers, and it connects your group to a shared online world
[19:03] <+Anthony> There will be NPCs, locations to play, and rumors and secrets passed from android to android
[19:03] <+Anthony> The app will give your group story lead ins to play, and you can tell the app what happened in your session
[19:03] <+Anthony> which will change the online world… we hope players will build a really unique story and world using the app
[19:04] <+Anthony> We also will host a marketplace for stories written by fans and guest writers, available as DLC
[19:04] <+Anthony> Thanks you so much for having us on… here’s our link to our kickstarter! (Link: http://kck.st/1FKvLmu)http://kck.st/1FKvLmu
[19:04] <+Anthony> (done)
[19:05] <~Dan> Thanks, Anthony! The floor is open to questions!
[19:05] <+ladle> This sounds very ambitious. I see you kicked your goal’s ass, and I see why.
[19:05] <+Anthony> Thank you!
[19:05] <~Dan> So let’s see here…
[19:06] <~Dan> Do you think it would be more instructive to delve further into the setting first, or the system?
[19:06] <+Anthony> Maybe the setting
[19:06] <~Dan> Okay then.
[19:06] <~Dan> Is this future Earth?
[19:07] <+Anthony> Yes… about 50 years after a big war that pit android armies against each other
[19:07] <~Dan> What year would that be? Or do you say?
[19:07] *** Zralok has left #rpgnet
[19:09] <+Anthony> We keep it vague… I’d estimate 100 years from now or more… but different GMs have wiggle room
[19:09] <~Dan> And you say humanity has rejected technology?
[19:09] <+ladle> ^
[19:09] <+ladle> That was my next question. 😛
[19:10] <+Anthony> Yeah, like in Battlestar Galactica, where some tech is still around, but nobody trusts computers… we return to manual paperwork to track everything
[19:10] <+ladle> So there are still mechanical tools and things?
[19:10] <+ladle> Pulleys etc.
[19:11] <+Anthony> Right, the rural communities have metal tools, some tractors (but gas is in short supply), and the urban areas have concrete buildings and electric lights, after much effort
[19:12] <+ladle> Very interesting.
[19:12] <~Dan> Was much technology destroyed in that last war?
[19:13] <+Anthony> Yeah, a lot of the modern infrastructure… since androids did a lot of the work for people before the war, not many people knew how things worked… so instead of rebuilding they kind of returned to a pre-industrial state
[19:16] <+Anthony> The people who grow and import food end up with a lot of power
[19:16] <+Anthony> As do the people who ‘enforce’ the rejection of technology… it’s pseudo religious, so there’s a mob mentality when an android is exposed
[19:16] <+Anthony> (done0
[19:18] <~Dan> What’s the limit imposed on technology?
[19:20] <+Anthony> As long as people don’t do anything so complicated you would need a computer
[19:20] <+Anthony> One way androids get caught is being too smart, too fast, too strong, etc.
[19:21] <+Anthony> So players have to navigate some new social norms about prefering grit to cleverness, etc. (not that we don’t have that already ;])
[19:21] <+Anthony> (done0
[19:22] <~Dan> Hmm. So how much advanced technology is still lying around?
[19:23] <+Anthony> Not very much… it’s not like humanity invented plasma rifles or anything like that…
[19:23] <+Anthony> The Reclaimers would have confiscated that
[19:23] <+Anthony> if it existed… they’d prefer humanity stick to the 1890s, but they have to let is slide up to 1990s
[19:24] <+Anthony> *it
[19:24] <+Anthony> In cities it’s a little different… there’s more electricity and industry
[19:24] <+Anthony> since they are the hubs of getting food, water, and medicine around to the humans that are left
[19:25] <+Anthony> But it’s still paper records, etc.
[19:25] <+Anthony> (done)
[19:25] <~Dan> I see… So how advanced is weaponry?
[19:26] <+Anthony> The Reclaimers have some EMP type hardware to take on androids, but everyday people have ordinary guns, that don’t present much threat to androids
[19:26] <+Anthony> but they would have to pretend it did
[19:27] <+Anthony> if someone is bullet-proof, it’s kind of a give away…
[19:27] <+Anthony> That’s a big reason why players have to go out and stop the crazy android monsters, because humans just don’t have the means
[19:27] <+Anthony> but they can’t take credit for it
[19:28] <+Anthony> humans look a gift horse in the mouth, and would call the Reclaimers to come in with the artillery
[19:28] <+Anthony> (done)
[19:28] <~Dan> Does this take place in the former U.S.?
[19:29] <+Anthony> We aren’t sure yet, one of the Kickstarter rewards left is to pick which major city the game takes place near
[19:29] * ~Dan nods
[19:29] <~Dan> So the book is still a work in progress?

[19:30] <+Anthony> Yes, we most of the game mechanics done, and are working on stories about anrdoids in the world
[19:30] <+Anthony> we want people to be able to read the core rulebook beginning to end
[19:31] <+Anthony> so we are working on that in parallel, since we are funded now 😀

[19:31] <+GenoFoxx> (hiya Dan, Anthony, everyone)
[19:32] <+Anthony> Hi!
[19:32] <~Dan> Can you describe the androids themselves?
[19:32] <+Anthony> They are like biological replicants… with skin, hair, etc.
[19:33] <+Anthony> but they can use their healing systems to build tools
[19:33] <+Anthony> like blades, grapplers, etc.
[19:33] *** RandBrittain has quit IRC: Disintegrated: Leaving
[19:33] <+Anthony> The more they do it, the more mechanical the new appendages look… so it’s a balancing act to not look too inhuman
[19:34] <+Anthony> their brains are like computers, but a little different
[19:34] <+Anthony> instead of one big AI program in charge, their intelligence is the result of millions of little control programs
[19:35] <+Anthony> which is why there are monsters; the programs don’t always achieve harmoney
[19:35] <+Anthony> *harmony
[19:35] <+Anthony> (done)
[19:36] <+GenoFoxx> I apologize if this has been asked but what are your influences for the setting?
[19:38] <+Anthony> I’m a big fan of movies like Blade Runner and Gattaca, but also anime like Ghost in the Shell
[19:38] <+Anthony> For monster designs, I love John Carpenter’s The Thing
[19:39] <+Anthony> and Akira… that body horror stuff is just so creepy… if an android lost its mind, it becomes a very Cronenburg-ian thing
[19:39] <+Anthony> (done)
[19:39] <+GenoFoxx> so is power armor available?
[19:40] <+Anthony> The Reclaimers, the human inquisitors that root out hidden androids, would have some… but it would be rare
[19:40] <+GenoFoxx> is there a way to bring an android back to rationality or do they have be ‘retired’?
[19:41] <+Anthony> So far, nobody has found a way to bring crazy androids back… players and NPCs are welcome to try to find a way though… it might make a good guest story/DLC!
[19:42] <+GenoFoxx> I would think with crazy androids going all ‘resident evil’ on folks power armor would be a thing almost standard equipment to bring them under control
[19:43] <+Anthony> Reclaimers also have enslaved androids who they deploy to stop them, called Hunters… it’s an available player class for the hunters who shake off the slave programming
[19:44] <~Dan> How do Hunters differ in terms of capabilities?
[19:44] <+Anthony> They are experts at picking the exact right moment to strike… in game mechanic terms their abilities manipulate turn order
[19:47] <+GenoFoxx> can they freeze time?
[19:49] <+Anthony> No, it’s really just about timing… they stalk their prey and anticipate their moves, and know how to get their strike in or bide their time

[19:49] <~Dan> (Howdy, Serah_!)
[19:50] <+Anthony> Not if they don’t want them to be… they can retract the sword or the grappler… there will be the ability to change things like fingerprints or eye color permanently, in order to change cover identities, etc.

[19:51] <~Dan> (e.g., /nick Dan)
[19:52] <+Anthony> Much stronger… they can bend steel or jump a few stories up… a lot of rolls are actually about holding back to appear human
[19:54] <~Dan> Are they all bulletproof?
[19:55] <+Anthony> Yeah, and even if a bullet made it in, they could just heal it out Wolverine-style… but they can pretend to be injured and/or bleed until humans aren’t around

[20:08] <+Anthony> haha
[20:09] <+RPosner> So is there sort of a gambling aspect with re-rolling then?
[20:10] <+Scubagoomba> (Yeah! Just trying to see what’s going on so I don’t ask anything that’s way tangential!)
[20:10] <~Dan> (No worries, Scubagoomba. We are a kind and understanding people.)
[20:10] <+Anthony> Yeah… it’s kind of like Yahtzee, you have to choose if you want to keep what you have or chance something better
[20:11] <+Scubagoomba> What made you decide to go with the dice pool and gambling?
[20:12] <+Anthony> I kind of got frustrated with flat die rolls with bonuses, and wanted to try something more interesting from a probability perspective
[20:12] <+Anthony> There’s a lot of power creep… things having like +35 bonuses ona d20
[20:12] <+Anthony> (done0
[20:12] <+Scubagoomba> How do you quantify leveling up, then? Since there isn’t a static number added
[20:13] <+Anthony> You get to roll and reroll more dice, mostly…
[20:14] <~Dan> In the example sheet, would the player have to roll both dice in Obfuscate? Or can you always choose to roll less?
[20:14] <+Anthony> You can choose not to take your rerolls, or take them one at a time
[20:15] <~Dan> Do you consider the Capabilities to be analagous to skills?
[20:16] <+Anthony> I would say so… but the idea is the player justifies why their task uses each one… you can use Obfuscate lie by being really unclear with your language, or you can use Clarify to lie by just saying a bald faced lie
[20:17] <~Dan> Is that the full list of Capabilities?
[20:17] <+Anthony> You can flip someone with Balance, Bruce Lee style, or with Force, with a kick to the face

[20:22] <+Anthony> Oh! I see it now… yes, it’s just those eight
[20:23] <~Dan> I see… So do you include a lot of example Potential/Capability combinations in the rules to illustrate how different actions are accomplished?
[20:23] <+Cubi> Is it possible to play something less than human? along the lines of a box with guns on it, or does that go against your core theme of the tabletop?
[20:24] <+Anthony> <Dan> Yeah, we want to let players think creatively about how to combine them… and people really pick it up in play tests
[20:25] <+Anthony> <Cubi> afraid not, we are more in the replicants hiding among people vibe… but that idea might be a good expansion later on! (maybe a little Brave Little Toaster?)
[20:25] <+Cubi> Endorsed

[20:28] <+Anthony> That was a really good idea!
[20:28] <+Cubi> Excellent
[20:28] <~Dan> How does combat work?
[20:29] <+Cubi> if future installments are coming down the pipe, what didn’t make it into the first edition of the game that you would want to add as soon as you can(since you hit your stretch goal for extra playstyles)
[20:30] <+Anthony> It’s essentially turn based, each character rolls for Speed, which is both turn order and armor class
[20:30] <+Anthony> And on each turn, characters use tactics based on their positions to each opponent on the Battle Arc
[20:31] <+Anthony> for each attack, they pick whichever weapon they want to use, which does damage agains the foe’s Resolve, which is like HP/exhaustion in one
[20:32] <+Anthony> <Cubi> One thing I really want to do is more about androids replacing humans and assuming their identities
[20:32] <+Anthony> <Cubi> That’s coming down the pike, though 😀
[20:32] <+Anthony> (done)
[20:32] <+Scubagoomba> Is it possible to run games like that with the rules as-is?
[20:33] <~Dan> How does armor work?
[20:35] <+Anthony> <Scubagoomba> We probably could, but some mechanics geared toward that would make it more fun… especially Gattaca style identity police, etc.

[20:35] <+Anthony> <Dan> no armor to speak of, your Speed is the number a hit roll has to overcome, and it’s deducted from the damage you take
[20:36] <+Anthony> <Dan> so the faster you are the less damage you take
[20:36] <+Anthony> (done)

[20:37] *** Teylen has quit IRC: Disintegrated: Leaving
[20:37] <+Anthony> No, they are just basically impervious to ordinary weapons… they really only need to use Speed for combat against other androids
[20:37] <+Scubagoomba> So what would happen if an android and a human get into a fight?
[20:38] <+Anthony> For humans, they would use Potential/Capability rolls for the android to pretend they are in a fair fight… because otherwise the android could just win hands down (but would be exposed)
[20:39] <+Anthony> To “take a punch” e.g. they might roll Insight and Force to swing their head back the right distance
