[19:03] <+LindsayArcher> Hey everyone! I’m Lindsay Archer. I’m the co creator of OtherWorld which is a concept for a fantasy series, We trying to put together a proof of concept which is a short movie, like a trailer to present to Networks like HBO and Netflix, to be made into hour long episodes of a series.
[19:04] <+LindsayArcher> I no only helped with much of the concept and plot, but the concept art, storyboards, and play one of the key characters in the series, a half elf named Ilianna.
[19:04] <+LindsayArcher> You can visit the campaign for OtherWorld here (Link: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/otherworld-proof-of-concept/x/10435231)https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/otherworld-proof-of-concept/x/10435231
[19:04] <+LindsayArcher> And you can see more of my art at (Link: http://www.lindsayarcher.com)www.lindsayarcher.com
[19:05] <+LindsayArcher> Where you can see some of the RPGs I’ve illustrated.
[19:05] <+LindsayArcher> (done)
[19:05] <~Dan> Thanks, LindsayArcher! The floor is open to questions. 🙂
[19:05] <+JasonP> (That link just gives me broken PHP :()
[19:06] <~Dan> First off, let me just comment that I can totally see you playing a half-elf. 🙂
[19:06] <+LindsayArcher> the one for my site should redirect.
[19:06] <+LindsayArcher> hehehe, well I did write her for me, and I have one pointy ear. Obviously my elven side.
[19:07] <+LindsayArcher> Try the link like so (Link: http://lindsayarcher.com/wp/)http://lindsayarcher.com/wp/
[19:07] <~Dan> Now that’s what I call half-elf!
[19:07] <+LindsayArcher> 🙂
[19:07] <~Dan> Can you tell us a bit about the premise of the show?
[19:08] <+LindsayArcher> OtherWorld is another name for Fairy Land.
[19:08] <+Vorthon> I’m kind of curious as to how much worldbuilding’s been done, since I’m a sucker for that kind of stuff. (Prefer the Silmarillion to the actual LoTR novels, etc.). Like, what kind of cultures are there? Any particular influences for them?
[19:08] <+LindsayArcher> In the world where the story takes place, 200 years prior, the world of magic split from the mortal world. There are pockets and places that are connected, but magic is rare and feared.
[19:09] <~Dan> (Vorthon’s question is a bit involved, so I’ll call for a question pause after his question.)
[19:10] <+LindsayArcher> I have a map! LOL! We have 3 main Kingdoms, Southern, Northern, and Middle, and it kind of looks like Ireland. There is an island that touches all three kingdoms, which is considered holy ground.
[19:10] <+LindsayArcher> k
[19:11] <~Dan> (Just give us another “(done)” when you’re caught up, and we’ll resume questions, LindsayArcher. 🙂 )
[19:11] <+LindsayArcher> I’m not allowed to share to much, because there’s a lot of spoilers, but the main character is a child of prophecy that helps reintegrate magic into the world.
[19:11] <+LindsayArcher> (done)
[19:12] <+Vorthon> (Also, I just wanna say, it’s nice to see a crowdfunding project that actually shows how the money’s gonna be used in chart form.)
[19:12] <~Dan> So you said you play a half-elf. Are there nonhuman races in most areas, or are they part of the rare magic?
[19:12] <+LindsayArcher> Thanks, we are wanting to do this right and have a great team.

[19:13] <@egyptian> (hi!)
[19:13] <+LindsayArcher> We do the fae like the old school myths. They aren’t Disney Dewdrop Fairies. We have the dark and the light courts, and their politics, all vying to still affect the mortal world.
[19:14] <+LindsayArcher> trolls and goblins, elves and faeries are all considered fae and have a role to play
[19:14] <+LindsayArcher> (done)
[19:14] <+LindsayArcher> Hi egyptian
[19:15] <~Dan> But to clarify, are they limited to the areas linked to the magic realms?
[19:15] <+LindsayArcher> Fairy Land is still split, but they can filter through these pockets. Very few stayed behind.

Not trying to be rude, just trying to figure out what’s going on. >_>)
[19:19] <+LindsayArcher> As for the time setting its Dark Ages/Medieval Fantasy. Only one kingdom has anything in the way of technology and it’s very basic.
[19:19] *** Kzar has left #rpgnet: Leaving
[19:20] <+LindsayArcher> Is that for lindsayarcher.com/wp/?
[19:20] <+Vorthon> Yeah. And the google search preview of just lindsayarcher.com seems to go on about black friday?
[19:21] <+Vorthon> Of course, I’ve had odd experiences with my wii u with regards to security certificates before, so the former’s probably just more oddness. >_>
[19:22] <+LindsayArcher> Yeah, works in Chrome. Sorry for the inconvenience.
[19:22] <~Dan> So obviously, I see loads of appeal here to tabletop roleplaying gamers, else you wouldn’t be here. 😉 Can you say a bit about that, including any gaming inspirations for the series?
[19:23] <+LindsayArcher> I guess I should have put a (done) in at the end of the time period
[19:23] <~Dan> And your own gaming experiences, if any? 🙂
[19:23] <~Dan> (No worries. 🙂 )
[19:24] <+LindsayArcher> D&D 3.5 tabletop mostly. I’ve played the Serenity RPG, which we helped playtest before I did the art for it.
[19:25] <~Dan> Very cool. The MWP folks are good people. 🙂
[19:25] <+LindsayArcher> Also played in the Dragonlance world, before illustrating for it as well.
[19:25] <+LindsayArcher> Yes they are 😀
[19:25] <+LindsayArcher> I’m very honored to have worked with them.
[19:25] <~Dan> Certainly.
[19:25] <+Vorthon> Oooh, just noticed The Princess Bride in the list of influences. Loved that movie, TBH. Kind of curious as to how it’s influenced the ideas for the project.
[19:25] <~Dan> How long have you been into gaming?
[19:27] <+LindsayArcher> Since college… which was 20 years ago. A friend in my dorm sucked me into ElfQuest, and had the RPG. We made our characters and started writing stories as them. Then when I took fencing in college, and joined the local club, one of the other fencers was working on a RPG called Legendmaker and enlisted me to play and do art for it.
[19:28] <+LindsayArcher> We went to Dragon Con in 1998, and I realized this was my tribe!
[19:28] <+LindsayArcher> (done)

[19:29] <+LindsayArcher> Vorthon as for the influence, those are the movies that got us to love the genre, but I think that it has a lot of Willow, 2 of the characters have some Westley/Buttercup going on, and just helped us set the tone for our story.
[19:29] <~Dan> By Howard Scott III?
[19:30] <+LindsayArcher> Yes! You’ve HEARD of it? REALLY?!?!?
[19:30] <~Dan> That was one of the first games I ever reviewed. 😀
[19:30] <+LindsayArcher> REALLY!
[19:30] <~Dan> No foolin’. 🙂

[19:30] <~Dan> 🙂
[19:30] <+LindsayArcher> LOL! I remember that review. The cover artist was mad cause my interior art got a better review
[19:31] <~Dan> It was, I think, my first review copy that I ever received.
[19:31] <+LindsayArcher> Wow! Okay, now trying not to get the Small World song stuck in my head.
[19:31] <~Dan> Yeah, nobody wants that. 🙂
[19:32] <+LindsayArcher> hehe
[19:32] <~Dan> Anyway, sorry for the distraction. That was just a cool side-note. 🙂
[19:32] <+LindsayArcher> hehe 🙂
[19:33] <~Dan> (Ha! I see that line that made the cover artist mad. 😀 )
[19:33] <~Dan> (*ahem* Sorry. Back to business…)
[19:34] <+LindsayArcher> hehe
[19:34] <~Dan> So did any game influences impact your world?
[19:34] <+LindsayArcher> OtherWorld world, or my world?
[19:35] <~Dan> OtherWorld world. 🙂
[19:36] <+LindsayArcher> I think the fact that I basically went “I’m a half-elf healer with skills with bow and sword” … probably mostly with my character.
[19:36] <+LindsayArcher> I’m a history buff, and tend to listen to history documentaries when I’m painting, so I took a lot from that.
[19:37] * ~Dan nods
[19:39] <~Dan> Are there any other aspects to the setting that seem somewhat RPG-ish? 🙂
[19:39] <~Dan> Aside from the fact that we’re talking about a fantasy setting in general, I mean.
[19:41] <+LindsayArcher> There’s going to be some battles along the way. One of the nations has a food shortage, and has been attacking the main character’s kingdom on raids.
[19:42] <+LindsayArcher> There’s actually some magical intrigue as to why that is going on, but it’s sown tension… and there’s a mystery to unravel, which I guess would nod toward more political campaigns or maybe Baldur’s Gate
[19:42] <~Dan> I can see that.

[19:43] <~Dan> Can you say anything about the “rules” of magic in OtherWorld, if there are any?
[19:43] <~Dan> (Howdy, MonkofLords!)
[19:45] <+LindsayArcher> The magic is very tied to these pockets, and strongest closest to them. There’s natural magic though that comes from nature, that’s still pretty strong, like visions, dreams, and other such things that the humans also have. One of the main human characters has this and it drives a lot of the plot.
[19:45] *** GenoFoxx is now known as Tiburon
[19:46] <~Dan> So intrinsic magic?
[19:46] <+LindsayArcher> Yes
[19:46] <~Dan> Are there any other forms? Any learned magic?
[19:48] <+LindsayArcher> There is, and actually as the local elf, I teach some of that, as well as healing. Some of the first glimpses of magic, I get to introduce, but I think too much more and my partner will froth at the mouth for saying too much.
[19:49] <~Dan> Bah. I won’t tell if you won’t. 😉
[19:49] <+LindsayArcher> hehe
[19:49] <~Dan> But nah, I understand. 🙂
[19:49] <+LindsayArcher> It’s a very in depth and awesome story though. I hope that we get to tell all of it.
[19:50] <+Vorthon> I know it’s a bit out of the blue, but are there any cosmic horror elements? Y’know, things older and more… ‘other’ than the fairfolk, and such?
[19:50] <~Dan> As do I!
[19:50] <+LindsayArcher> Well, the oldest thing we have is the dragons, and there’s a few of them that stayed behind to protect the humans and didn’t agree with the split.
[19:51] <+LindsayArcher> They are integral to the story arc for the second season.
[19:52] <+LindsayArcher> We have not planned anything Lovecraftian, no
[19:52] <~Dan> Wow, you already have a second season planned out? How far out do your plans go?
[19:54] <+LindsayArcher> We have an end game in mind, and honestly it just keeps growing to tell the whole story. A lot of why the Fae split from the mortal world takes place in the Middle Kingdom, which because of the name had to have Chinese influence
[19:54] <+Vorthon> Are they all the conventional/contemporary type, or are any inspired by older depictions? (Less ‘majestic creatures’, more ‘scrabbling, skulking beasts’.) Sorry if I’m getting a bit morbid here, but the less shiny side of fantasy holds a bit of a fascination for me.

[19:55] <+SteveRP> Hi Dan.
[19:55] <+LindsayArcher> But there’s a tragic/redemption arc with a character from the Northern Kingdom, loosely based on Vikings, cold rocky, northern territory, rich in metals and ore, so they thrive off making weapons
[19:56] <+LindsayArcher> The fairies won’t be shiny, but I’ve been pulling for some Babba Yaga and nods to some darker fairy tales.
[19:56] <~Dan> Creepy fairies are awesome.
[19:56] <+LindsayArcher> Indeed
[19:56] <+Vorthon> Oooh, nice to see a bit of Slavic stuff. S’fairly underutilized these days.
[19:57] <+LindsayArcher> In just the pilot, 2 kids are taken.

[19:57] <+LindsayArcher> 🙂
[19:57] <+Aeolius> Though I suppose when I am wearing my wings, I would qualify as well.
[19:58] <~Dan> Quick aside, LindsayArcher: My favorite fairies from roleplaying are from a game called Arrowflight. The will-o-the-wisps are wicked little flying sprites who lure people to their doom, then stitch their corpses together to make their hives.
[19:58] <+SteveRP> Dan: That’s unpleasant sounding. Nice.
[19:58] <+Vorthon> …Oooh, grody.

[20:01] <+Aeolius> Gotta love Baba Yaga. The main hag protagonist game was a bit Baba Yaga, a bit Aughra, a bit of the Cailleach, and a bit of me.
[20:01] <+LindsayArcher> Most of the fae remaining are passing for human as best they can. Right now we have 2 trolls as our comic relief.

[20:01] <+LindsayArcher> Yeah, I’m not supposed to say, but yes
[20:01] <~Dan> Sorry. 🙂

[20:07] <+LindsayArcher> Two of our actresses have been on Sleepy Hollow as the 4 who speak as one.
[20:08] <+Aeolius> The reef hags in my setting are immortal… sorta. When a sea hag swims near a reef of incarnum coral she becomes pregnant, later giving parthenogenetic birth to a reef hag. When the reef hag dies, her small coral-like horns fall from her brow and seed a new incarnum reef. Each reef hag is born with the memories of the hag that came before.

[20:15] <+Lin_Chong> Morning.
[20:15] <+LindsayArcher> Carrie Anne and I wrote it together. She and I met through a mutual friend and she modeled for me. Then she was doing a movie and they needed a baby, when Morgan was 3 months old and we bonded on set.

[20:16] <+LindsayArcher> Carrie Anne has many links in the industry. She was just in Magic Mike 2, making all my female friends jealous.

[20:16] <~Dan> Sorry. Long day.
[20:16] <+LindsayArcher> hehe
[20:17] <~Dan> Okay, so… bad example. 🙂
[20:17] <+LindsayArcher> It’s fine, it has been a long day
[20:18] <~Dan> So did you find the other talent in your production through Carrie Anne?
[20:19] <+LindsayArcher> Yes, she’s worked with most of the other actors before, but most still had to audition to choose between a couple of them. I’m really thrilled with the performers playing Jonathan and Gillian. They have great chemistry and are just great people.
[20:19] <+LindsayArcher> They are our romantic arc
[20:20] <+LindsayArcher> Which gets mucked up in the first episode presenting them with some huge challenges
[20:22] <+LindsayArcher> The lady playing Mary performed with Carrie Anne on stage. CA did a lot of Shakespeare. Mary’s character is very integral. We kind of didn’t mean to but we have a maiden, mother, crone motif going on.
[20:22] <~Dan> Huh. You do, at that. 🙂
[20:22] <+LindsayArcher> Although I think being the 200 year old half-elf I think I’m the crone.

[20:23] <~Dan> 😉
[20:24] <~Dan> How “flashy” can magic be in your setting? And on a related note, what’s the extent of the special effects you have planned?
[20:24] <+LindsayArcher> We’re doing as much as we can with practical effects, puppetry, but we will have to do some CGI
[20:25] <+LindsayArcher> Spells look kind of like mist when affecting objects.
[20:25] <+LindsayArcher> Kind of like Scarlet Witch in Age of Ultron
[20:25] * ~Dan nods
[20:26] <~Dan> What about the dragons?
[20:27] <+Vorthon> Oooh, I love puppetry and practical effects. Did some work for a guy who uses that kind of stuff. Learned to appreciate what the guys in the rubber suits in old monster movies went through during one of those stints.
[20:27] <+LindsayArcher> Hopefully by season 2 we will have lots of funding, but they’ve been trying to blend in as best as they can for 200 years, and well, they don’t look quite human. We were talking to Roy Wooley from Face Off about working with us at one point, but we have some other connections with special FX make up, that we are going to call in.
[20:28] <+Aeolius> Vorthon> try swimming in a silicone tail, some time. It definitely takes skill!
[20:29] <~Dan> Ah, I see… So for now, all of the creatures look “mostly” human?
[20:29] <+LindsayArcher> Hehe, we have one huge rubber suit thing to do for the dream sequence, that’s going to be a real challenge, and part of why we are raising money. But practical effects, the lighting… it can really get the creepy vibe better than CGI… kinda of like the Ring Wraiths in LOR, Fellowship of the Ring.
[20:30] <~Dan> Practical effects do have much more impact, IMO.
[20:30] * +Vorthon hopes some of that money goes to a cooling system, because their experience was in a fairly thin suit, but still wound up with them slumping in a chair in front of a fan between takes, trying not to drown on dry land. 😛
[20:31] <+LindsayArcher> LOL! Yeah, I do not envy the people in the suit. But it’s a short scene so I hope that it won’t be too bad.
[20:32] <+Aeolius> You want funky lighting? Look up biofluorescence some time!
[20:33] <+LindsayArcher> 🙂
[20:33] * +Vorthon feels that getting enough glowing mushrooms to serve as stagelights would be hard. 😛
[20:34] <~Dan> LindsayArcher: How would you describe the scale of OtherWorld? Are you aiming for a grand, sweeping epic? A small, personal story? Something else?
[20:35] <+LindsayArcher> Sweeping epic, with multiple little personal stories, like if Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings had a love child that wasn’t incestuous.

[20:37] *** SteveRP has left #rpgnet
[20:37] <+LindsayArcher> This is just for the Proof of Concept. The rest of the story, and the sweeping epic, are for when a Network decides to fund it. The Proof of Concept is how we get the funding for that. We give them a little taste and see if they want to make it happen.
[20:38] <+Aeolius> Dan> you crowdfund! Ever heard of The Underwater Realm? (Link: http://theunderwaterrealm.com)http://theunderwaterrealm.com

[20:40] *** Vorthon has quit IRC: Disintegrated: Leaving
[20:41] <~Dan> So would the story presented in the proof-of-concept generally be re-shot and “upgraded” if you were to get picked up?
[20:41] <~Dan> Or would it become part of the actual series?
[20:43] <+LindsayArcher> The POC would be about 10 minutes long, like a long trailer with jump cuts and such, so it doesn’t tell much of the story. If picked up, we would probably be able to shoot a pilot episode which would be an hour long, or go into production for a season of 10-13 episodes.
[20:43] <~Dan> Ah, I see.
[20:43] <+LindsayArcher> Originally we were going to do a webseries, but it evolved.
[20:44] <~Dan> Do you still consider that an option?
[20:45] <+LindsayArcher> It would still require a heck of a lot of money. So unless we had some solid investors, it’s more likely to happen with a Network. It’s just a matter of convincing them that we are a good investment.
[20:45] <+LindsayArcher> The market is right for it though. Fantasy has become a serious genre, instead of a fringe genre
[20:45] <~Dan> That’s very true.
[20:46] <+LindsayArcher> And Netflix is certainly a possibility now when it wasn’t before.

[20:50] <+LindsayArcher> Do you have a pilot written for them? Often along with a proof of concept, they need a finished pilot, and sort of a synopsis for the next couple episodes.
[20:50] <+LindsayArcher> Finished pilot script, sorry, not filmed
[20:50] <~Dan> That said, in what remains of “regular” time, is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to mention?
[20:51] <+LindsayArcher> Just, thank you for this opportunity to talk about Otherworld 🙂
[20:51] <+Aeolius> Lindsay, the pilot for the TV series is in note form but could easily be fleshed out.
[20:53] <+LindsayArcher> There’s script software out there that can help format it properly for you, and then you have a start for submission. You’ll also need a tagline, like an elevator pitch. Each piece is designed to be interesting in small doses so they want to take the time for a bigger dose.
[20:53] <+Aeolius> as for the movies, well, you know Syfy… it wouldn’t take long. The first in the series, “Globster” would need a dozen bikini-clad models, 300 gallons of Bruce Campbell’s special stage blood mix, and 100 yards of bubblewrap. 😉
[20:53] <~Dan> You’re very welcome, LindsayArcher. Thank you for your patience with what were likely some very ignorant questions on my part. 🙂
[20:54] <+LindsayArcher> They were lovely, and thank you for your patience with me. I hope I wasn’t too boring.
[20:54] <~Dan> Not in the least. 🙂
[20:55] <~Dan> If you’ll give me just a moment, I’ll get the log posted and get you the link. 🙂
[20:55] <+LindsayArcher> Thanks 🙂
