[20:02] <+Whitt> I’m Mark Whittington, (everyone calls me Whitt) i’m an ancient beardy gamer and I’ve just had my first RPG published.
[20:03] <+Whitt> My game is PROJECT… let me find a link
[20:03] <+Whitt> (Link: http://www.rpgnow.com/product/146321/Project&affiliate_id=50144)http://www.rpgnow.com/product/146321/Project&affiliate_id=50144
[20:03] <+Whitt> here’s the blurb:
[20:03] <+Whitt> PROJECT is a role-playing game about heroic guardians of reality. After a terrible, supernatural disaster the world has been rent asunder and strange things have begun to bleed in all around the edges. Humanity has recovered to an extent and continues to fight these beings and forces from beyond known as ‘Entities’. The group PROJECT is at the forefront of
[20:04] <~Dan> (cut off at “forefront of”)
[20:04] <+Whitt> humanity’s defence, using the strange technologies and abilities of the Entities against them and reasserting reality one bloody fight at a time. In the game you will take the role of one of the heroic agents of PROJECT, modified through barely understood technology and thrown against the strange and deadly beings and events that press in on the Earth from i
[20:04] <+Whitt> s neighbouring dimensions and parallels. In the process you may begin to discover things that you wish you didn’t know and that the battle for reality is not as black and white as you have been indoctrinated to think.
[20:04] <+Whitt> With stunning art by Toby Gregory and a customised version of the Open D6 system, PROJECT is a great game for mission-based play and conspiracy arcs. PROJECT IS SAVIOUR
[20:04] <+Whitt> Phew!
[20:05] <~Dan> (Oh, just give us a “(done)” when you’re ready for questions and as you feel needed after any long responses. 🙂 )
[20:05] <+Whitt> oh, okeydokey – done!
[20:06] <~Dan> Thanks, Whitt! The floor is open to questions!
[20:06] <~Dan> (And just so you don’t think I’ve lost my mind, I’ll likely be asking some questions that we already covered during your informal visit earlier today. 🙂 )
[20:06] <+Whitt> (this is super weird – i’ve not used a chat client like this since online Vampire :))
[20:06] * ~Dan chuckles
[20:07] <~Dan> So the setting is a post-apocalyptic Earth?
[20:07] *** Tallifer_Mailys is now known as Lioness
[20:09] <+Whitt> Yes. There was an event called the Mindquake that effectively destroyed humanities language centres. We lost our ability to communicate, and our history. The game is set after our recovery. We’ve gotten back to a ‘near future’ technology level.
[20:09] <+Whitt> There’s laser and flying cars, cyborgs, etc.
[20:09] <+Whitt> lasers*
[20:09] <~Dan> How long is it past the Mindquake?
[20:10] <+CSFerguson> What was the significance of the mindquake?
[20:10] <+Whitt> The date is 432AE – effectively 432 years after we started the calendar again.

[20:11] <~Dan> (Howdy, jeffszusz!)
[20:12] <~Dan> Did the Entities begin showing up immediately after the Mindquake?
[20:12] <+Whitt> without the ability to read or write, communicate… we reverted to tribalism. it blew us back to the stone age.
[20:12] <+Whitt> Yes. The Mindquake ‘broke’ reality and the entities appeared as what PROJECT calls PME (Psycho Magnetic Energy) flowed into the world.
[20:13] *** thedungeondelver has joined #rpgnet
[20:13] *** ChanServ sets mode +v thedungeondelver
[20:13] <+GrimTheWanderer> so the mindquake was the collective unconscious reaching critical mass?
[20:13] <+Gabriel> What exactly is the organization PROJECT? Is it a secret society, a government, an adventurers guild?
[20:13] <~Dan> How did humanity survive being kicked back to the stone age with the Entities running loose, and how did humanity make it back from the stone age to near-future tech in a mere four centuries?
[20:14] <+Whitt> That’s one theory. its assumed that the upper echelons of PROJECT have an idea of what happened.
[20:14] <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, thedungeondelver!)
[20:14] <+Whitt> PROJECT is savior!
[20:15] <+Whitt> They are an almost corporate organization that enhanced volunteers with technology developed from PME and the enteties themselves. they fight the enteties in return for ‘juristiction’ of entity events.
[20:17] <+Whitt> Getting to your question Dan, we almost didn’t.
[20:18] <+Whitt> newborns weren;t affected by the effects of the Mindquake and a few people who were left on the edges of society. The Mindquake affected the more populous places worst of all.
[20:19] *** jeffszusz has quit IRC: Ping timeout: 483 seconds
[20:20] <+Whitt> done
[20:20] <+Gabriel> So the loss of communication is a Tower of Babel type thing, or something more fundamental?
[20:20] <~Dan> So they were able to piece together the lost society?

[20:22] *** ChanServ sets mode +v Critias
[20:22] <+Critias> Boop.
[20:22] <+Whitt> Babel is a good analogy. those born after weren;t affected. we relearnt a lot of our history a few generations after… one side effect of the entities being around was it was quite hard to determind fact from fiction. A story about faries could be taken as a historical account.
[20:22] <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Critias!)
[20:22] <+Critias> Yo.

[20:24] <~Dan> (No problem! #rpgnet2 is open for general chat, if you prefer. 🙂 )
[20:24] <+Whitt> So in the game the players have one of the enhancements PROJECT has developed to fight the enteties. Each city has a base (so you could be a member of PROJECT London, etc). and you effectivly get missions to fly out and fight monsters.
[20:24] <~Dan> (Here’s what we’re discussing: (Link: http://www.rpgnow.com/product/146321/Project&affiliate_id=50144)http://www.rpgnow.com/product/146321/Project&affiliate_id=50144 )

[20:26] <+Whitt> There are 7 basic ‘classes’
[20:26] <+Whitt> Borgs – quick and stealthy assassins
[20:26] <+Whitt> Grunts – supersoldiers that use special guns and power armour
[20:26] <+Marleycat> Aw, man I missed Critias:(
[20:27] <+Whitt> Psykers – they fly around and blow stuff up with their minds
[20:27] <~Dan> (Marleycat: He’s one of the RPGsite folks, right?)
[20:27] <+Whitt> Empaths – telepaths and ‘sensitives’ (precognitives, etc)
[20:28] <+Marleycat> Hi Dan. What’s the Q & A about?
[20:28] <+Whitt> Golems – giant chaps that hit stuff
[20:29] <~Dan> (Marleycate: (Link: http://www.rpgnow.com/product/146321/Project&affiliate_id=50144)http://www.rpgnow.com/product/146321/Project&affiliate_id=50144 🙂 )
[20:29] <+Whitt> Medusae – artificially intelligent robots with bodies made of metal coils
[20:29] <+Whitt> and Wytches – magic users that can summon and control small entities
[20:29] <+Whitt> done
[20:30] <+Gabriel> I’m not familiar with Open d6. Are these classes handled like Star Wars d6 1e archetypes, D6 Space/Adventure/Fantasy supplemental point build, or something else entirely?
[20:30] <+Marleycat> Both sites he was a writer for SR. He tends to hang out at RPG Site more and more often given the weirdness at RPG Net lately.
[20:31] <+Whitt> They are archatypes with a little customisation dice for skills, etc. and advantages / disadvantages
[20:32] <~Dan> (Marleycat: Gotcha. He’s talking to me now via FB and assures me that he will be back to talk to you again. 🙂 )
[20:32] <+Gabriel> any mixing of archetypes?

[20:34] <+Whitt> someone once described it as CyberGhostBustersPunk
[20:34] <+Gabriel> If you were running a one GM/one player game, what do you think the best archetype for that type of game would be?

[20:35] <+Whitt> PROJECT LOndon was a low-power investigation style game
[20:36] <+Marleycat> A little bit. The one with the open templates and D6 right?
[20:36] <~Dan> (Welcome to #rpgnet, Werekoala!)
[20:36] <+Whitt> PROJECT DC was a more action oriented game
[20:36] <~Dan> Marleycat: Correct. This is based on that system.
[20:36] <+Whitt> and PROJECT tokyo was a balls-out super powered giant robots destroying cities style of thing
[20:36] <+Whitt> (and they all ended up hating each other – who knew?)
[20:37] <+Whitt> Wytches and Psykers would be great for one on one… they have a borad cross section of skills and abilities
[20:38] <+Whitt> broad*
[20:38] <+Marleycat> Ah okay. Well any game with psykers and witches interests me. 🙂
[20:39] <+Whitt> I’ve got a link to a video that features a lot of the art – Toby did a great job… i’ll post it at the end
[20:39] <+Marleycat> Cool.
[20:39] <~Dan> Does the setting actually distinguish between psionics and magic, or are they two manifestations of the same power source?
[20:39] <+maxmahem> so… there are giant robots?
[20:39] <+Whitt> Good question, Dan
[20:39] <~Dan> Heh. I figured that would get maxmahem’s attention. 😀
[20:40] <+Whitt> Psyker implants generate PME energy… they can focus and control is in specific ways (blasts, shields, flying, etc)
[20:40] <+maxmahem> (I have client set to highlght me when mechs or giant robots are mentioned!)
[20:40] <+Whitt> Wytches manipulate the background energy of the world. they can cast spells, summonj entities, heal, etc)
[20:41] <+Whitt> The grunts use power armour – some of it is quite big – as are some of the entities. if you want to trash Tokyo- have at it 😛
[20:42] <+Marleycat> Kind of a twist on how Witchcraft worked. Good deal.
[20:42] <+Gabriel> <– big mecha fan. Could you describe a power armor suit or two?
[20:42] <+Whitt> Dan can i post pictures here?
[20:42] <~Dan> Someone asked me if this is a “supers” setting, Whitt. Any thoughts on the subject?
[20:43] <~Dan> Whitt: Only links to them, if you have them posted.
[20:43] <+Whitt> ah, nuts sorry – check the video at the end
[20:43] <~Dan> Sorry. Limits of the technology. 😦
[20:44] <+Whitt> If you want to fly around and blow stuff up – PROJECT has you covered. The enhancements have something for everyone
[20:45] <+Whitt> the original version i ran for my group used a riff off the TSR Marvel FASERIP system… i loved the scalability… if you want to keep playing and keep powering up your dude… go for it
[20:45] <+Marleycat> so is it set in Tokyo? Or several countries say like Trinity?
[20:45] <+Whitt> all over. I used London, DC and Tokyo as a basis for my home campaign, but there’s aPROJECT base in every major city
[20:46] <+Whitt> I even ran PROJECT Eastbourne (my home town) at a con 😛
[20:47] <+Whitt> ~(done)
[20:47] <~Dan> So on the supers subject, how powerful can PCs get, using, say, well-known Marvel superheroes as benchmarks?
[20:47] <+Marleycat> So a generic setting that can be put anywhere. I’d use Seattle myself.😆
[20:48] <+Whitt> well Golems are lets say the old TV version of The Hulk… and they can go up to the new movie version of the Hulk an beyond.
[20:48] <+Kei_Kenobi> (If I used Seattle I’d include a ton of tongue in cheek reference to Shadowrun)
[20:49] <+Whitt> I love SR 😀
[20:49] <~Dan> Really? That’s pretty impressive.
[20:49] <~Dan> Now, as to the Entities, can you say a bit about their nature? You mentioned fairies, for example.
[20:50] <+Whitt> If yo want to play a super power game just hand out buckets of XP… give the players what they want.
[20:50] <~Dan> (brb — please continue)
[20:51] <+Whitt> PROJECT started out as the game I wanted to run… Anything goes so I put in the stuff I liked. Celtic myth, Dragons, roman catholic demons and angels… cthulhu

[20:52] <+Gabriel> How many sample entities are there?
[20:54] <+Whitt> Ten or so… there’s a broad cross section
[20:55] <+Marleycat> I accidentally booted myself. I’m also a big Shadowrun fan and since Seattle and area is my hometown…..😷
[20:55] <+Whitt> PROJECT uses a colour scale that runs from infared to ultraviolet and beyond… so the PME scanners that are used ‘in game’ tell you how much trouble you are getting into
[20:55] <~Dan> (back)
[20:55] <+Songtress> Infrared color scale?
[20:56] *** Werekoala has quit IRC: Disintegrated: (Link: http://www.mibbit.com)http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client
[20:56] <+Whitt> so an infared level entity would be a negligible threat… red orange, yellow were getting to human level and beyond… green blue indigo violet are the heavy hitters…
[20:57] <+Marleycat> Would witches have a natural ability that mimics that?
[20:57] <+Whitt> there’s rumours it goes beyond ultraviolet to alpha, beta…
[20:57] <+Whitt> The’r summoning is based around the scale, yeah
[20:57] <+Whitt> their*
[20:59] <~Dan> Are all of the Entities supernatural? Is there room for technologically-savvy invaders?

[21:00] <+Whitt> Oh, yes. Some entities are basically just here to eat, others have their own invasion agendas. Some are friendly…

[21:02] <~Dan> You’re a trooper, Whitt. As have been your British game author brethren this week. 🙂
[21:02] <+Whitt> I love roleplaying hooks for my characters, so each ‘class’ has something to roleplay around.
[21:03] <~Dan> You mentioned friendly Entities… Is there the possibility of Entity PCs, now or down the road?
[21:04] <+Whitt> Borgs for example are basically brains put into robot bodies… the brain doesn’t have the same feedback a boy give it, so to stop the Borgs from going completely mad PROJECT developed a psionically imbued mask that controls the borgs mood…
[21:04] <+Whitt> body*
[21:04] <+Marleycat> A “familiar” entity now THAT’S useful. 🙂
[21:04] <+Whitt> And borgs carry multiple masks…
[21:04] <+Whitt> Sorry Dan missed your question…
[21:05] <+Whitt> … that’s classified. PROJECT will be with you shortly 😛
[21:05] * ~Dan chuckles
[21:06] <~Dan> How common are Entities? Are there entire areas inhabited by them?
[21:06] <+Whitt> Its weird. PROJECT has been kicking around in my draws for a LONG time… so there’s campaigns i’ve run that have all sorts of stuff in… that i’ve not even talked about with the publisher.
[21:07] <+MonkofLords> I see
[21:07] <+Whitt> Very common. PROJECT keeps most cities clear as best as they can.. outside of the cities its a wilderness, and extremely dangerous
[21:08] <+Whitt> In england, the wilderness is a no go area… leylines etc opened up causing no end of hassle.
[21:09] <~Dan> Ah… So there’s a very real post-apocalypse vibe to the setting in that respect.
[21:09] <~Dan> I was wondering about the extent to which civilization had rebuilt.
[21:09] <+Whitt> In America things are a bit safer until you go deep in the desert, or the mountains. But some people think the government is infected with entities that have formed treaties…
[21:09] *** RandBrittain has quit IRC: Disintegrated: Leaving
[21:10] <+Whitt> You can still go down the street and buy a starbucks… buy an ipad. That guy sellng drugs in the alley might have horns though…
[21:10] <~Dan> Are there any reality-warping effects that seep through along with the Entities? Zombie uprisings, for example? High-magic zones? No-tech zones?
[21:12] <+Whitt> Definitely. New york is a no go area after PROJECT Denver went in to stop a particularly nasty incursion. the walls of reality have different thicknesses.
[21:12] <+Whitt> I like putting the power in the hands of the GM… it’s like a toolkit. if you want Rio to be full of cyber zombies… go get ’em
[21:13] <~Dan> So in some cases, the realities have flowed in along with the invaders?
[21:13] <~Dan> Kind of a TORG thing?
[21:15] <+Whitt> Some entities want to change the world into little bits of home. There’s also the opportunity later on to go on ODD (Other Dimensional Duty) and fight the entities on their home turf.
[21:15] <~Dan> When you say “later on”, do you mean in future supplements?
[21:16] <+Whitt> The base rulebook is mainly about PROJECT and what it’s like being an employee… basic breakdown of the world. Enteties and generation rules fo rthe GM…
[21:17] <+Whitt> if it sells OK, there’s a load of stuff to come…
[21:17] <+maxmahem> you mentioned a video?
