[19:57] <+Phil_SOL> Hi allall
[19:57] <+Phil_SOL> I’m the designer, illustrator, an author of a new rpg called SOL.
[19:58] <+Phil_SOL> I’ve been publishing and designing and illustrating books for 20 years.
[19:58] <+Phil_SOL> Those book are either literary books, or rare books for state library collections, and art galleries.
[19:59] <+Phil_SOL> I played rpgs when i was teenager.
[19:59] <+Phil_SOL> I’m 41 now.
[19:59] <+Phil_SOL> Recently a friend of mine invited me to a game of D&D.
[19:59] <@Silverlion> 0.
[20:00] <+Phil_SOL> I was surprised by how many rules there were, how often they stopped play rather than keeping the game n ply.
[20:00] <+Phil_SOL> play
[20:01] <+Phil_SOL> This encouraged me to revisit an idea for an rpg from my teenage years.
[20:01] *** Randy has left #rpgnet
[20:01] <+Phil_SOL> The rule were written and passed onto my friend who played it with his gamer group.
[20:01] <+Phil_SOL> They were impressed and felt I should publish.
[20:02] <+Phil_SOL> I was originally going to publish a small run here in Australia, but they suggested I should reach a USA audience. Which is why I have a Kickstarter.
[20:03] <+Phil_SOL> SOL is a fantasy game (sword + sorcery).
[20:04] <+BlasterKyubey210> Ah, Sword and Sorcery from Down Under
[20:04] <+Phil_SOL> The world has detailed socio-politcal concept.
[20:04] <+Phil_SOL> This is gives clear background to the characters.
[20:05] <+Phil_SOL> The characters are designed to work as a group.
[20:05] <+Phil_SOL> However, there is a class that is designed to play one on one with the GM.
[20:05] <+Phil_SOL> I suppose I should ask for any questions so far?
[20:06] <+BlasterKyubey210> Nothing so far, but let’s hear some of the classes and the reason why one of htem is designed to be played one on one with the GM
[20:06] <@Silverlion> So how does the system work?
[20:06] <+Phil_SOL> The classes are: Sister, Deem, Galdr, Master Ballistics.
[20:07] <+Phil_SOL> Together they form a palm.
[20:07] <+Phil_SOL> The sister is the leader of the palm.
[20:08] <+Phil_SOL> The deem is the warrior class (so to speak).
[20:08] <+Phil_SOL> The galdr is the magic-user type
[20:08] <+Phil_SOL> The master ballistics speaks for itself.
[20:09] <+Phil_SOL> Guns and explosives.
[20:09] <@Silverlion> So it comes with a prebuilt party?
[20:09] <+Phil_SOL> No. Not really.
[20:09] <+BlasterKyubey210> Yep, nothing sucks more for Politicans then well, taking a Cannon Ball to the face
[20:10] <+BlasterKyubey210> Sorry, so what’s the system structure like
[20:10] <+Phil_SOL> The focus is on how the adjudicator (GM) to construct a world around why the classes would have been assembled.
[20:11] <+Phil_SOL> There is no reason you could have four deems.
[20:11] <+Phil_SOL> The game system uses six sided dice only, and one key chart.
[20:12] <+Phil_SOL> I designed the key chart and have had two games testers with pure mathematics degrees test its probability.
[20:12] <+Phil_SOL> This has allowed teh single chart to determine the outcome of any task.
[20:12] <+Phil_SOL> This chart will be printed on the back of the book for easy access.
[20:13] <+Phil_SOL> There is no leveling as such (D&D style leveling as I remember it.)
[20:13] <~Dan> Do you have the chart posted somewhere?
[20:14] <+Phil_SOL> The chart is on the kckstarter: (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/946041344/sol-tabletop-rpg)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/946041344/sol-tabletop-rpg
[20:15] <~Dan> Is this an attribute + skill system?
[20:15] <+Phil_SOL> YEs, very much so. But not skill so much.
[20:16] <~Dan> Ah, well let’s back up a bit then. What are the attributes?
[20:16] <+Phil_SOL> Players rely on rolling under their attributes to perform whatever task they may wish to do.
[20:16] <+Phil_SOL> Ok. Attributes are: Strength, Cognition, Dexterity, Health.
[20:16] <+Phil_SOL> You roll a 2D6 for each.
[20:17] *** LW has quit IRC: Ping timeout: 186 seconds
[20:17] <+Phil_SOL> The key chart with the adjudicator determines where the player needs to roll on the chart.
[20:17] <+Phil_SOL> SOL really wants to avoid any crunching.
[20:18] <~Dan> Can you give an example of a roll? Say, for jumping over a chasm?
[20:18] <+Phil_SOL> Sure thing.
[20:18] *** Ximni has quit IRC: Disintegrated: Leaving.
[20:18] <+Phil_SOL> How long do you want this chasm to be?
[20:19] * ~Dan thinks
[20:19] <~Dan> 10′?
[20:19] <+Phil_SOL> Okay.
[20:19] *** Ximni has joined #rpgnet
[20:19] *** ChanServ sets mode +v Ximni
[20:20] <+Phil_SOL> Let’s assume you aren’t being chased. It’s not windy, or raining, or dark.
[20:20] * ~Dan nods
[20:20] <+Phil_SOL> The ground is flat and dry.
[20:20] <~Dan> (Howdy, Ximni!)
[20:20] <+Phil_SOL> Your character is not weighed down.
[20:21] <+Phil_SOL> On the chart their are six grades: U A B C D E
[20:21] <+Phil_SOL> U is unchalenging.
[20:21] <+Phil_SOL> I would say that jumping a chasm is unchallengeable.
[20:21] <+Phil_SOL> But it is attainable under these conditions.
[20:21] *** fantomx111 has joined #rpgnet
[20:21] *** ChanServ sets mode +v fantomx111
[20:22] <~Dan> (Howdy, fantomx111!)
[20:22] <+Phil_SOL> Now what you need to do is roll 2D6 with a modifier of -6 to your roll.
[20:22] *** LW has joined #rpgnet
[20:22] *** ChanServ sets mode +v LW
[20:22] <+Phil_SOL> You’ll need get a score that is under your strength.
[20:22] <+Phil_SOL> Let’s assume your strength is 7.
[20:23] <+Phil_SOL> Rolling a seven is a 6.9% chance.
[20:24] <+Phil_SOL> But rolling an 12 is a 11.5%
[20:24] <+Phil_SOL> 10 is 12.5%
[20:24] <+Phil_SOL> So there is a good chance you’ll roll around 10.
[20:25] <+Phil_SOL> The -6 will make it a four.
[20:25] <+Phil_SOL> Which means you’ll cross the chasm.
[20:26] <+Phil_SOL> But if you were being chased the adjudicator may call the task C challenging, which means your receive no modifier. You have to roll equal to or under 7.
[20:27] <~Dan> Hmm… Interesting.
[20:27] *** fantomx11 has quit IRC: Ping timeout: 485 seconds
[20:27] <~Dan> Is degree of success ever a factor?
[20:29] <+Phil_SOL> What do you mean?
[20:29] *** LW has quit IRC: Ping timeout: 188 seconds
[20:29] <~Dan> I mean, does it matter how far under the target number you roll?
[20:29] *** LW has joined #rpgnet
[20:29] *** ChanServ sets mode +v LW
[20:30] <~Dan> To see how well you succeed, rather than just whether you succeed?
[20:30] <+Phil_SOL> Okay. I see what you mean (Kirk explained).
[20:30] <+Phil_SOL> There is a fumble and fluke table.
[20:30] <+Phil_SOL> a raw roll of 18 is always a fail. while a raw roll of 3 is always a success.
[20:31] <+Phil_SOL> Fumbles have added error. And fluke has added sucess.
[20:31] <+Phil_SOL> success
[20:32] <+Phil_SOL> the same is rtue of a 16 and 17. And a 4 and 5.
[20:32] <+Phil_SOL> But the results are not as severe.
[20:32] <+Phil_SOL> or helpful, if that makes sense.
[20:32] *** Tallifer_Mailys is now known as Lioness
[20:33] <~Dan> Now, you mentioned that skills aren’t a factor?
[20:34] <+Phil_SOL> Kind of. Yes.
[20:35] *** Ismellzombies has joined #rpgnet
[20:35] *** ChanServ sets mode +v Ismellzombies
[20:35] <~Dan> (Howdy, Ismellzombies!)
[20:35] <+Phil_SOL> Players won’t need to write down that they have a 60% climbing ability.
[20:35] <+Phil_SOL> Instead they rely on their attribute.
[20:35] <+Phil_SOL> So, going back to our chasm jump.
[20:36] <+Phil_SOL> Having succeeded jumping the chasm, the player now has a chance of bettering their attribute – ameliorating.
[20:37] <+Phil_SOL> Amelioration is the equivalent of leveling or skilling up.
[20:38] <+Phil_SOL> Our chasm jumper now needs to roll OVER his attribute of a 7 with a 3D6.
[20:38] <+Phil_SOL> If teh player succeeds he will gain a 0.5 to his strength.
[20:39] <@Silverlion> a HALF point?
[20:39] <+Ismellzombies> hey dan!
[20:39] <@Silverlion> That’s seems a little odd.
[20:39] <+Phil_SOL> yep.
[20:40] <+Phil_SOL> It’s to make sure players build gradually.
[20:40] <~Dan> Do the half-points have any effect?
[20:41] <+Ismellzombies> *can I get a link to the game in question? I showed up to the party late
[20:41] <~Dan> (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/946041344/sol-tabletop-rpg/description)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/946041344/sol-tabletop-rpg/description
[20:42] <+Ismellzombies> ^thank you
[20:42] <+Phil_SOL> No. Half points are round down.
[20:42] * ~Dan nods
[20:43] <~Dan> Is there any means of specialization beyond attributes?
[20:43] <~Dan> (Ismellzombies is one of your fellow game authors, by the way, Phil, as is Silverlion.)
[20:44] <@Silverlion> Hrms.
[20:44] <+Ismellzombies> hey phil!
[20:44] <+Phil_SOL> Hi
[20:44] <+Phil_SOL> Yes. You can speacialise.
[20:45] <+Phil_SOL> specialize.
[20:45] <~Dan> How does that work?
[20:45] <+Phil_SOL> But specialization occurs in cantations (spells), and soci-political roles.
[20:45] <+Ismellzombies> *stole the words out of my keyboard
[20:45] <+Phil_SOL> But more largely on how you behave (role-play).
[20:46] <+Phil_SOL> Solian society has expectation for its ‘adventuring’ groups. They are posted on deeds that serve society.
[20:47] <+Phil_SOL> Players who choose to ignore or stray from the deed run the risk of becoming ‘renegades’.
[20:48] <+Phil_SOL> This means the you will be expected to answer for your actions.
[20:48] *** LW` has joined #rpgnet
[20:48] *** ChanServ sets mode +v LW`
[20:48] <+BlasterKyubey210> Ah…
[20:48] <+Phil_SOL> There is no alignment in SOL.
[20:49] *** LW has quit IRC: Ping timeout: 182 seconds
[20:49] <+Phil_SOL> Renegades may choose to remain ‘outlaws’ and if so they will be most likely hunted down.
[20:49] <+Ismellzombies> Im also anti-alignment, I feel like solid mechanics and good plot = motivation for the player to act accordingly
[20:49] <+BlasterKyubey210> But Renegade is a state basically, and some are well-intended, nutjobbery aside
[20:50] <+Phil_SOL> Their cadavers will be returned to SOL, and their speacial weapons (contrivance and assay) will also be returned.
[20:51] <~Dan> Actually, that’s a nice segue to the setting. Can you describe it a bit more? You mentioned swords and sorcery, but there is firearms technology?
[20:51] <+Phil_SOL> Sure thing.
[20:52] <+Phil_SOL> Half the planet of SOL face the sun, while the otehr half is always in shadow. The sun side is know is SOL. The dark side know as Umbra.
[20:52] *** LW` is now known as LW
[20:52] <+BlasterKyubey210> Must be a slow rotation
[20:53] <+Phil_SOL> The city of SOL sit on the threshold (the area between the two), sometimes alittle more in the sun, sometimes a little more in the shade.
[20:53] <+Phil_SOL> The sun side is a vast ocean, while the umbra side is earth and ice.
[20:54] <+Phil_SOL> Most adventuring occurs in umbra undergound, a shelter from the cold.
[20:54] <+Phil_SOL> Master Ballistics, the guys with guns and explosives, are a party used to clear caverns and the like.
[20:55] <+Phil_SOL> They can also have a double role known.
[20:55] <+Phil_SOL> If the adjudicator wishes, he/she may ask a a Master Ballistics (MB) to become a Disc.
[20:55] <+Phil_SOL> A disc is a political position.
[20:56] <+Phil_SOL> A position that is kept secret from the other players.
[20:57] <+Ismellzombies> whos your artist? is there a place I can follow his/her work?
[20:57] <+Phil_SOL> The role of the disc is to serve the palm, but the secondary purpose is to spy on the palm should they wander from the deed they are on.
[20:57] <+Phil_SOL> The disc is given executive powers to assassinate the palm if necessary.
[20:58] <+Phil_SOL> Of course such a role requires more detailed discussion regarding the lore of SOL. But you get the idea.
[21:00] <+Phil_SOL> The disc was designed to be primarily a useful npc as a potential threat, becasue they’d never know if their npc Master Ballistics is either a normal MB or a MB disc.
[21:00] * ~Dan nods
[21:00] <+Phil_SOL> I’m the artist.
[21:00] <+Phil_SOL> I’m doing all the illustrations.
[21:01] <+Ismellzombies> sweet
[21:01] <+Ismellzombies> I did all of mine as well
[21:01] <+Ismellzombies> do you have a like page, site or something I can follow?
[21:02] <+Phil_SOL> I do, but it is a long way from this sort of work. I publish literature and make hand made books.
[21:02] <+Phil_SOL> The hand made books are purchased by university libraries, state libraries, and art galleris.
[21:02] <+Ismellzombies> *Im a geek, trust me, Im interested
