<+JeremyMohler> Hello folks! My name is Jeremy Mohler. I’m the artist and publisher for the upcoming Shotguns & Sorcery RPG by Matt Forbeck.
<+JeremyMohler> It’s a fantasy noir series series set in a city surrounded by zombies and ruled by a dragon emperor.
<+JeremyMohler> It’s the first book outside of Monte Cook Games to feature the Cypher System as well.
<+JeremyMohler> It’s currently running on Kickstarter over here – (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1124066364/shotguns-and-sorcery-rpg)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1124066364/shotguns-and-sorcery-rpg
<~Dan> Thanks, JeremyMohler!
<~Dan> The floor is open to questions!
<+JeremyMohler> Yeah, Matt would be here, but he had a conflicting engagement.
<~Dan> So is this a traditional fantasy setting that’s technologically evolved?
<+JeremyMohler> Yeah. There is a good mixture of traditional fantasy and some minor technological advancements. There’s also a nice mixture of magic and tech as well, which is something I thought was fun.
<~Dan> What is the tech level?
<+JeremyMohler> Oh, I’d say early gunpowder, though there’s some room for flexibility in there.
<~Dan> Huh. For some reason, I’d gotten the impression that it was more like the mid-20th century. Maybe just the “noir” aspect.
<+JeremyMohler> I can see that – I think the noir refers more to the private detective and the murder mystery.
* ~Dan nods
<+JeremyMohler> That whole genre.
<+JeremyMohler> It’s really a take on fantasy I haven’t seen much before – not that there isn’t something out there, but it was a lot of fun.
<~Dan> Is the action limited to the city?
<+JeremyMohler> Not at all.
<+JeremyMohler> They head outside the walls several times.
<+JeremyMohler> The experience is sort of like what you see in The Walking Dead.
<~Dan> How does anyone manage that, given the surrounding zombies?
<+JeremyMohler> Very carefully!
<+JeremyMohler> Haha. The main characters are actually retired treasure hunters.

<+technoshaman> hey agian
<~Dan> (Howdy, tech!)
<+JeremyMohler> So the novels set things up where previous to the current storyline, they had spent time out treasure hunting.
<+JeremyMohler> Dodging zombies, searching crypts, etc.
<+JeremyMohler> Fun stuff.
<+JeremyMohler> And they make it outside the walls in the present as well – they have a secret base outside the wall.
<~Dan> I see. Cool.
<~Dan> Is the entire world beyond the city overrun with zombies?
<+JeremyMohler> That’s sort of up in the air. It seems like it could be, but it never really addresses that.
*** Acenoid has quit IRC: Client exited
<~Dan> Are there any threats other than zombies beyond the city?
<+JeremyMohler> That’s a good question! I expect that there might be, but it’s not something we really address in the novels. I actually expect we’ll explore that a bit more with the RPG.
<~Dan> Are there monsters within the city itself?
<+JeremyMohler> Yes, I believe so. You can find many of the traditional fantasy creatures there – goblins, orcs, I think there may have been a troll, dwarves, elves, halflings, and humans, of course.
<+JeremyMohler> It’s fairly open and I suspect there may be a variety of beasties in and around the city that aren’t zombies.
<+JeremyMohler> Oh, and dragons, of course.
<~Dan> More than one dragon?
<~Dan> Must be a pretty big city!
<+JeremyMohler> Yeah. One of the things I need to do with the cover I drew is make the city bigger. It would blot out the sky.
<+JeremyMohler> It’s massive.

<~Dan> (Howdy, Ismellzombies!)
<+Ismellzombies> hey dan!
<~Dan> Did I read that the various races live at different districts of the city, with goblins and their ilk down by the walls?
<+JeremyMohler> Yeah. Seems like Matt mentioned that it sort of works it’s way up from the city wall – goblins, orcs, and on up with the elves at the top of the city and the dragon at the very top.
<+etaoinshrdlu> this book is doing my head in
<+JeremyMohler> Being near the wall is the least desirable place to live.
<~Dan> Sorry if this is a silly question, but are the zombies beyond the walls all undead humans?
<+JeremyMohler> Not at all – and no. All manner of creatures.
<+JeremyMohler> Probably mostly humans.
* ~Dan nods
<+JeremyMohler> But I expect all kinds of creatures, actually.
<~Dan> How traditional are the various fantasy races? Are there any unusual twists involved?
<~Dan> (Quick aside: Ismellzombies here is the author of the zombie game Remain Calm.)
<+Ismellzombies> *thanks for the shout out Dan!
<+Ismellzombies> Im just hear to listen and occasionally ask art related questions
<+JeremyMohler> (Awesome! Nice to meet you!)
<+JeremyMohler> (Sorry, my machine is bugging out a bit – hope I don’t have to restart.)
<+JeremyMohler> Not so much in terms of unusual twists.
<~Dan> (No worries. Thanks for the heads up.)

<+Kimacus> Yes! Spur of the moment really.
<~Dan> So let’s turn to the system for a moment. Can you tell us how the Cypher System has been tweaked to fit this setting?
<~Dan> (Glad to have you here! The floor is open to questions!)
*** technoshaman has quit IRC: Disintegrated:
<+JeremyMohler> Actually, I really can’t yet. We haven’t gotten started too much on the game design just yet. And honestly – Robert Schwalb would be the better one to answer those questions. I’ll do my best, though!
<+Ismellzombies> have you guys already discussed lore?
<+Ismellzombies> Im a story geek
<+JeremyMohler> Though, the Cypher System is a storytelling system, and I think that lines up really well with this setting.
<+JeremyMohler> I like story too! Which is part of the reason to work with Matt so heavily on this. And honestly, we’re just getting started, so there hasn’t been a whole lot of discussion on that just yet.
<+JeremyMohler> I’m really excited to find out more about the world, though. I expect Matt has a lot of pretty interesting stuff up his sleeve.
<+Ismellzombies> ^ya this is def where my interest lies
<+Ismellzombies> whos doing your artwork?
<+Ismellzombies> its great!
<+JeremyMohler> I agree!
<+Kimacus> Ditto on the artwork
<+JeremyMohler> Actually, one of the things I’m excited about adding to the book is some comic material.
* ~Dan snickers
<~Dan> (Jeremy here is the artist. 😉 )
<+JeremyMohler> We may do a comic stretch goal, but even if we don’t, I’m wanting to add some sequential material to help flesh the world out a bit.
<+JeremyMohler> Visually, that is.

<+Sharpe> (Greetings, all. I’ll be quiet. 🙂 )
<+JeremyMohler> I’m hoping we do an intro to the world with some sequential storytelling.
<~Dan> JeremyMohler: Do you know if the game is keeping the fighter/rogue/wizard “class” format from Numenera and The Strange?
<+JeremyMohler> I believe so.
<+JeremyMohler> Though it’ll obviously be tweaked to fit the S&S setting.
* ~Dan nods
<~Dan> Speaking of wizards, I’m very curious to see how magic works in the game. I’ve been playing both The Strange and Numenera, and magic (or magic-like abilities) seem a bit restrictive and not much like spell systems.

<+JeremyMohler> Yeah, I’m curious to see how it works out as well. Because magic is definitely a prevalent force in S&S.
<+Ismellzombies> Id like to know how you manage to balance said shotguns against it
<+JeremyMohler> I expect there’s going to be a bit of tweaking to make magic work.
<~Dan> Can you say a bit about how magic seems to function in the setting based on the books?
<+JeremyMohler> Well, one of the cool things we see is magic bullets that are fired out of the shotguns.
<+JeremyMohler> Just FYI – it’s been over a year since I read the trilogy and short stories, so I’m a little rusty on all the ins-and-outs.
<+JeremyMohler> But, magic is a pretty cool component, I thought. Lot’s of items being imbued with magic (such as a flying carpet).
*** Songtress has quit IRC: Disintegrated: Leaving
<+JeremyMohler> There’s also a sort of alcoholic drink that imbues the caster with magic as well.
<+JeremyMohler> That can be dangerous.
<+JeremyMohler> And there are some drugs as well tied to magic.
<+JeremyMohler> I fear I’m doing a terrible job of explaining this! I’m sorry folks!
* ~Dan chuckles

<~Dan> And we can always drag Matt in here for a follow-up Q&A. 🙂
<~Dan> In any case, we are a kind and patient people here. 😉
<+Kimacus> This may be too far afield to ask, but presuming that this kickstarter and future supplements are a raging success, would there be an appetite to include sourcing of miniatures?
<+GenoFoxx> so magic bullets like caster shells from ‘Outlaw Star’?
<+JeremyMohler> Kimacus – anything is possible! I’d actually love to see some miniatures at some point. Could be a lot of fun.
<+JeremyMohler> I’d love designing them too.
<+Kimacus> yes and yes
<+JeremyMohler> GenoFoxx – I’m not familiar with Outlaw Star! I’m sorry!
<+Ismellzombies> Jeremymohler don’t worry Im not judging you brother! i just like to ask
<+Ismellzombies> I had to leave and come back, so did you mention who did the artwork?

<~Dan> He was too modest, so I did. 🙂
<+JeremyMohler> I appreciate that!
* ~Dan indicates JeremyMohler. 🙂
<~Dan> JeremyMohler: How would you describe the noir aspect of the setting?
<@Silverlion> Was Glen Cook, or Simon Green’s various pulp-fantasy novels an inspiration?
<+Kimacus> (Also, I really hope you guys get to the next stretch goal. Such sweetness)
<+Ismellzombies> is there a place that I can stalk your hand…handy work?>
<~Dan> (Kimacus: Sent you a PM.)
<+JeremyMohler> (Dan) This is a hard question – but I think it mostly resides in how the book is written from a first person perspective and the murder mystery. Sort of like Robert Parker’s Spenser and James Lee Burke novels.
<+JeremyMohler> Silverlion – honestly, that’s a question for Matt.
<+JeremyMohler> I’m sorry I don’t have a better answer! This is his baby.
<+JeremyMohler> Kimacus – me too! I think the player guide will be great!
<+JeremyMohler> Ismellzombies – yes! You can see my work over at (Link: http://www.jeremymohler.com.)www.jeremymohler.com.

<+JeremyMohler> Sorry – (Link: http://www.outlandentertainment.com)www.outlandentertainment.com
<+JeremyMohler> Yeah, the players guide will be a separate book from the core book.
<~Dan> Will that be akin to the setup for the other Cypher games, in which the corebook is self-contained and the player’s guide just contains what the players need?
<+JeremyMohler> That’s exactly how we’re planning to set it up.
* +Kimacus approves
<~Dan> Cool. I like that method.
<~Dan> So I see that the city is “magically lit”. Does magic take the place of technology in other respects in the setting?
<+Ismellzombies> I love your sense of mood in these pieces! Anyway, let me not geek out about artwork
<+JeremyMohler> Yes – and I think that’s an interesting idea. If magic and technology come up at the same time…what replaces what?
<~Dan> And for that matter, does tech and magic combine in ways beyond the magic bullets you mentioned?
<+JeremyMohler> Ismellzombies – Thanks! The work is a little different than traditional RPG fare – it’s not painted and is more comic oriented.
<+JeremyMohler> I’m glad to hear you are liking my work!
<~Dan> Ismellzombies is a pretty spiffy artist, himself. He won’t say so, so I will. 😉
<+JeremyMohler> Dan – Yes, I believe there may be some stuff with the dwarves that will combine tech and magic in interesting ways.

<+Ismellzombies> thanks dan
<+JeremyMohler> Awesome! I’m going to look at this in more detail after this!
<+Kimacus> Once the kickstarter project is completed, are you guys looking to record a vid tutorial on how to play, or perhaps a live session demo?
<+JeremyMohler> And congrats on your KS, btw!
<~Dan> That’s a good question about tech development in a magic setting.
<+Ismellzombies> THAnK YOU
<~Dan> The answer depends very much on the way magic works in the setting, of course.
<+JeremyMohler> Kimacus – that’s a great idea. Though we’re out on production for a while. But once the book is done – I think we’ll definitely do that.
<+JeremyMohler> The technology is there now to do that sort of thing, why not?
<~Dan> If magic is easy and dependable enough, a lot of tech will never show up, IMO.
<+JeremyMohler> Right, Dan.
<+JeremyMohler> I think that’s a good assumption.
<~Dan> Take the example of magical lighting.
<~Dan> If that’s easily done in S&S, why would anyone try to figure out the electric lightbulb? The problem has already been addressed.
<+JeremyMohler> Right. And you wouldn’t even need the lightbulb.
* ~Dan nods
<+JeremyMohler> I’m not sure it’s that easy though. It takes some work and seems to be limited from what I remember.
<~Dan> How common are sorcerers in the setting?
<+JeremyMohler> Seems like the main character, Max, has to recharge himself in the middle of encounters sometimes with his flask of dragon essence (I can’t recall exactly what it is).
<~Dan> Is magic ability innate or learned?
<+JeremyMohler> Pretty common, there’s a school for wizards.
<+JeremyMohler> And I believe some races have more ability for it than others.
<~Dan> Is it something you have to be born with?
<+JeremyMohler> You know, I’m not sure.
<+JeremyMohler> It might be something only the wealthy can afford to learn as well? I can’t recall for sure.
<~Dan> I’m especially curious because that would tell me the degree to which the setting might resemble Cast a Deadly Spell.
<~Dan> Are you familiar with that movie?
<+JeremyMohler> I’m not. I’ll have to look it up!
<~Dan> Run, do not walk, to see it.

<+JeremyMohler> Nice! It’s got a variety of actors I like in it. Know if it’s on Netflix?
<~Dan> No idea offhand, sorry.
<+JeremyMohler> No problem, I’ll look it up later.
<~Dan> Fred Ward plays hardboiled detective Harry Philip Lovecraft. 🙂
<+JeremyMohler> The premise reminds me a bit of a comic called Aerosmith. Though I guess that was more WW1 era. Still, cool idea.

<+JeremyMohler> Yeah, absolutely.
<~Dan> Oh, I did actually have a point…
<~Dan> Ah, yes. What I was going to say is that the movie showed how you can have a… I dunno, cynical?… approach to magic.
<~Dan> Making it fit in a noir context.

<~Dan> Which is why I’m curious as to how accessible magic is in S&S to the average Joe.
<~Dan> (Howdy, Monochrome_Tide!)
<+JeremyMohler> Interesting. I’m going to have to watch that movie.
<~Dan> Do you recall how much wonder is associated with magic in the S&S books? Or is it treated more just like a tool?
<+JeremyMohler> It seems to be more of a tool.
<+JeremyMohler> Less mystery, more everyday use.
<~Dan> Yeah, see, I think it would have to be.
<~Dan> I don’t think awe-inspiring magic is very compatible with a noir mindset.
<~Dan> Or, at least, awe-inspiring to the natives of the setting. If that makes sense.
<+JeremyMohler> That makes sense. I mean, there might be some impressive magical feats, but I get what you are saying.

<+JeremyMohler> But no, not really.
<+JeremyMohler> No active gods.

<+JeremyMohler> Not that I remember – religion really didn’t play any major role.

<@Silverlion> No. I’m not sure how well that will do.
<~Dan> Is there any assumption as to what the characters in S&S will be doing?
<~Dan> Seems like I heard something about that, re: Shannara.
<+JeremyMohler> I think there will be some treasure hunting outside the walls. I also think there is a lot of room to design adventures that are actual mysteries within the city.
<+JeremyMohler> Which I think could be pretty cool.
<+JeremyMohler> I think the way Matt set up the different burrows with the different inhabitants is pretty great, too.
<+JeremyMohler> Could help create conflict within the game and the city.
<~Dan> Are there any dungeon-like environments within (or beneath, rather) the city?
<+JeremyMohler> I know there is a prison, so it wouldn’t surprise me.
<+JeremyMohler> I may have to hit Matt with some of these questions.
<+JeremyMohler> There are a lot of good ones – some stuff I didn’t even consider or think of.
