[19:02] <+Justin> Hi all, I am Justin Harper and we at Anonygon Studios present Ascended Saga!
[19:03] <+Mike> I’m Mike Stowe! Justin’s our lead game director, and this project is mostly his creation. Krystal Harper does the artwork. I just help out where I can.
[19:04] <+Mike> The Ascended Saga is a tabletop RPG with an emphasis on storytelling that tries to avoid getting bogged down with too many rules while still giving players the freedom to play how they want.
[19:04] <+Justin> Exactly
[19:10] <+Justin> The game itself takes place in a medieval setting, with an emphasis on magic and skills.
[19:10] <+Mike> Players can choose from a variety of races and classes, and can mix and match skills to create the character that suits them.

[19:11] <+Mike> The Ascended Saga isn’t trying to revolutionize tabletop RPGs, but it is trying to fill a niche: a system that’s simple enough for anyone to get into while versatile enough for everyone to have fun.
[19:12] <+Justin> Characters try to survive the harsh world of Asura while dealing with the Ascended (gods, but more like people that have “ascended”) who want the characters to help them in various ways
[19:15] <+Mike> That’s the Ascended Saga in a nutshell; we’ve left a lot of questions unanswered, so feel free to ask away and we’ll be happy to get as specific as you want!
[19:15] <+Mike> (done)
[19:15] <~Dan> Thanks, guys! The floor is open to questions!
[19:16] <~Dan> So what subgenre of fantasy do you consider this to be? High fantasy? Swords and sorcery? Dark fantasy?
[19:16] <+Justin> Swords and sorcery with a hint of dark
[19:17] <+xyphoid> so, ‘medieval setting’ – is that a D&D-like setting, or a historical medieval setting?
[19:18] <+Mike> The Ascended give it an air of high fantasy, too, but the player characters can really have whatever kind of adventure they want.
[19:18] <+Justin> D&D would be the best I would guess but I use medieval as a time period
[19:19] <~Dan> But you mentioned previously that firearms are present?
[19:19] <+Mike> It definitely doesn’t take place in our history, ha.
[19:19] <+Justin> Yes
[19:20] <+Justin> But not everyone has accessed to that sort of thing
[19:20] * ~Dan nods
[19:20] <~Dan> Would you mind giving us that link to the character sheet again?
[19:21] <+Mike> Sure! We actually put it up on the Kickstarter page, which is here: (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/186567785/ascended-saga-tabletop-rpg)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/186567785/ascended-saga-tabletop-rpg
[19:21] <+Mike> The character sheet itself is right here: (Link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/t0wrr2vdck1tsfb/Ascended%20Saga%20Character%20Sheets%20%281%29.pdf)https://www.dropbox.com/s/t0wrr2vdck1tsfb/Ascended%20Saga%20Character%20Sheets%20%281%29.pdf
[19:22] <+Justin> Magic is the focus, where as technology is kinda seen as odd or strange
[19:22] <~Dan> Can you describe the core mechanic?
[19:23] <+xyphoid> so what stage is the game at? you’re doing delivery in 5 months
[19:23] <+xyphoid> well, four and a half from the end of the kickstarter
[19:23] <+xyphoid> at least for the full rules
[19:25] <+Justin> Sure thing, at its core Ascended Saga uses Skills in various ways to accomplish tasks. The skills use a d20 to check for successes. Combat also uses the d20 to battle the creatures. Damage is all basically pre calculated so you only need to roll to hit the target. Combat can be a bit more complex than that but this is just the basics
[19:26] <~Dan> What is the relationship between attributes and skills?
[19:26] <+Justin> the game is in its final stages. Some editing needs to be done and some contend expanded upon.
[19:27] <+Mike> We try to keep the math pretty simple, too. Each skill has a base attribute, and a rank. When you make a skill check, you add both the relevant attribute’s modifier and your rank in the skill to your roll.
[19:27] <+Justin> We have a beginners guide all ready done and we had a small release locally
[19:29] <~Dan> What’s the attribute scale for humans?
[19:29] <+Justin> Art takes the longest to finish but I wouldn’t know as much about that as our artist. But she is not here right now
[19:29] <+Justin> Attributes scale neutrally for all of the races
[19:29] <~Dan> The art is remarkable, by the way. I strongly urge everyone to check it out!
[19:30] <+Mike> Each race does get a starting bonus to a particular stat, though.
[19:30] <+Justin> What seperates the races are inherited traits
[19:30] <+Justin> That’s why I keep you around Mike, to remember the things I forget
[19:31] <+Mike> 🙂
[19:31] * ~Dan chuckles
[19:32] <~Dan> So what’s the overall attribute scale, then?
[19:32] <+Justin> You gain 4 points to place anywhere each level
[19:33] <+Justin> You choose where they go
[19:33] <+Justin> Stats max at 20 though some magical items could bring it higher
[19:34] <~Dan> Is that a universal cap, or just for PCs?
[19:34] <+Justin> Universal mostly
[19:34] <+Justin> I don’t have monsters with a higher stat cap but I could in the future

[19:35] <~Dan> Welcome back, Krys!
[19:35] <+Krys> hi
[19:35] <+Justin> I actually give the monsters a different Health point scaling for the monsters
[19:35] <+Mike> But otherwise, they’re more or less the same as PCs.
[19:36] <+Mike> They do have special resistances and other abilities, though!
[19:36] <+Justin> Exactly

[19:36] <+Justin> It is for ease incase someone wanted to make their own monsters
[19:37] <+Mike> Krys is here for any art questions. 🙂
[19:37] <~Dan> 🙂
[19:37] <~Dan> Now, you mentioned that damage is a flat score… Does degree of success affect it?
[19:38] <+Mike> Typically no, although we do have a critical system.
[19:38] <+Justin> The worse the success the easier for the enemy to evade the attack
[19:39] <+Justin> Combat is more active, so you are not defenseless if the enemy attacks your face and vice versa
[19:39] <+Mike> Fast actions can be used out of turn to dodge, counter, etc.
[19:40] <+Justin> Using a fast action, you can use Alteration and Decay magic skills to turn yourself into a poison gas cloud and poison the enemy when it goes to attack you, also allowing you to evade the attack
[19:41] <~Dan> I like the division between attributes used for accuracy and damage as indicated on the character sheet. Care to comment on that?
[19:41] <+Justin> I wanted all of the stats to be important
[19:42] * ~Dan nods
[19:42] <+Justin> I wanted to make it obvious if you were favoring a certain stat that you would notice weakness elsewhere
[19:43] <+Justin> Ultimately you will chose about 6 stats to favor
[19:44] <+Justin> At least thats my experience with players. The stats vary from character to character and all of the stats get use

[19:49] <+Krys> for example
[19:49] <+Justin> They follow the tropes enough for people to make a connection but really I wanted something newish
[19:50] <~Dan> Sure.
[19:50] <+Mike> We wanted to give our races a reason for being the way they are.
[19:51] <+Krys> even though it is a highly magical world. Everything must have an explanation. It helps with adequate world building
[19:51] * ~Dan nods

[19:52] <~Dan> Now, what are the Ascended?
[19:52] <+Justin> They are people that have been given god like abilities
[19:52] <+Justin> essentally
[19:53] <~Dan> Are there actual gods as well in the setting?

[19:54] <+Mike> You worship them, do quests for them, they give you powers… if they like you.
[19:54] <+Justin> Yes
[19:54] <~Dan> Now, this is a class/level system, correct?
[19:54] <+Justin> Also they lose power if you don’t worship them
[19:55] <+Justin> And thats why their are now only Nine
[19:55] <+Justin> *there
[19:55] <+Mike> Correct!
[19:55] <+Justin> Yes
[19:55] <~Dan> What are the classes?
[19:56] <+Justin> Berserker, Guardian, Rogue, Archer, Sorcerer, Wizard, Priest, Medium, and Monk
[19:56] <+Justin> Those are the starting classes
[19:56] <+Justin> The advanced classes take two of the starting classes to create a new class (essentually)
[19:57] <+Mike> You get to pick an advanced class at level 10.
[19:57] <+Justin> We call it choosing your path
[19:58] <~Dan> You mentioned previously that the classes break down into offensive/defensive types?

[20:02] <+Mike> I’ve never played Earthdawn! But according to Wikipedia, it does seem similar. 🙂
[20:02] <~Dan> Well, in Earthdawn, the “class abilities” are all manifestations of magic.

[20:08] <+Krys> I’m only good at the pretty pretty pictures
[20:08] <~Dan> Heh. Getting back to magic, what is spellcasting like?
[20:08] <+Justin> There is also a class that uses a Blunderbuss, it fires elemental shots
[20:08] <~Dan> Cool. Blunderbusses are awesome. 🙂
[20:09] <+Mike> Spellcasting is skill-based. You can combine spell skills with other skills (and other spell skills) to produce different effects. Their range and damage is limited by your rank in that skill.
[20:09] <+Justin> And limited by the amount of Mana your character has
[20:10] <+Mike> You might decide to concentrate high damage onto a single opponent, or spread the damage out across multiple enemies, for a simple example. Both of these would cost more MP and be trickier to pull off than just attacking them with an un-augmented spell.
[20:10] <~Dan> So it’s a magic point system?
[20:10] *** WorkingGun has quit IRC: Disintegrated: (Link: http://www.mibbit.com)http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client
[20:10] <+Justin> Yes you do have Mana points
[20:11] <+Mike> And you spend them to cast spells. Certain weapons use your magic hit rate and magic damage without consuming MP, though.
[20:12] <~Dan> Do Priests and Mediums have distinct spell lists?
[20:13] <~Dan> Or do they have powers distinct from spells?
[20:13] <+Justin> No, basically how it works, if you were a Medium lets say, You would pick Astral Magic skill and Shadow magic skill

[20:16] <+Justin> Each class as special abilities that sometimes augment their skills
[20:16] <~Dan> Ah… So class doesn’t affect the available skills, but rather how the characters can use them?
[20:16] <+Justin> Yes
[20:16] <+Mike> Classes also give free skills. Wizards get Third Sight and Force; Priests get free ranks in Holy and Recovery.
[20:17] <~Dan> Are there any D&D-like weapon or armor restrictions?

[20:39] <+BPIJonathan> I know that I am personally getting sick of most zombie stuff, I am glad to see a different spin.
[20:39] <~Dan> What’s a horse goblin?
[20:39] <+Mike> :p
[20:39] <+Krys> horse and goblin
[20:39] <+Krys> lol
[20:39] <~Dan> 😉
[20:39] <+Krys> here’s a goblin
[20:39] <+Mike> Krys doesn’t have time for commas.
[20:39] <~Dan> That’s understandable.
[20:39] <~Dan> Commas give me pause.
[20:39] <+Justin> lol
[20:40] <+Justin> I will just encourage you
[20:40] <+Mike> I do not have the appropriate smilies for the level of pain you induce on me.
[20:40] <~Dan> Welcome to #rpgnet, where painful puns are the price of admission. 🙂
[20:40] * +BPIJonathan wrings Dan’s neck for Mike.
[20:40] <+Mike> 😀

[20:41] <~Dan> Huh. So goblins are… bird-based?
[20:41] <+Justin> Yes
[20:41] <~Dan> Intersting twist!
[20:41] <+Krys> oooh! goblins are one of three creatures who are normal creatures that have been twisted by the nether!
[20:41] <+Krys> the other being orcs and ogres
[20:41] <+Mike> You also have creatures that come straight from the nether, like vampires and werewolves.
[20:41] <+Krys> yes they are birds who have been contaminated with nether poison
[20:42] <+Krys> orcs are bear based and ogres are asuran based
[20:42] *** DrNate has joined #rpgnet
[20:42] *** ChanServ sets mode +v DrNate
[20:43] <~Dan> (Howdy, DrNate!)
[20:43] <+Krys> our world has a bit of an identity crisis not only from invading war factions but by the stuff of darkness itself
[20:44] <+Krys> the nether is predatory, its creatures feed on asuran wildlife
[20:45] <~Dan> Is the nether “evil”, or is it more “amoral”?
[20:45] <+Krys> the nether is not evil. it is a presence that is parasitic in nature so more amoral
[20:46] <+Krys> at least in the eyes of asurans it could be evil
[20:46] <+Mike> Creatures there do tend to be more ruthless, though, I think.
[20:46] <~Dan> So are vampires and… what are the were-creatures?… fairly antisocial?
[20:47] <+Mike> (Therians)
[20:47] <+Krys> hmm not necessarily. They are social just not so much when they are on asura.
[20:47] <+Krys> they have one purpose there. to feed grow strong and return to fight in teh nether
[20:48] <+Krys> while on asura though they do sometimes breed and we get dirty halfbreeds who are generally hated by the people
[20:48] <+Krys> but are seen as lesser beings by nether creatures and are barred from entering the nether
[20:48] <+Justin> The halfbreeds are usually the PCs
[20:48] <~Dan> So they’re nether here nor there?
[20:48] <+Justin> lol
[20:48] <+Krys> lol
[20:48] <+Mike> no
[20:48] <+Krys> escatly
[20:49] <+Krys> exactly
[20:50] <+Krys> so in a great way we have a wealth of individual creature dynamics that weave together to make an immense world
[20:50] <~Dan> So, a quick note: As I hopefully told you guys previously, you (and all game authors) are always welcome to discuss your work here anytime you like, so you can stay as long as you like this evening.
[20:50] <+Krys> thanks
[20:50] <~Dan> That said, in the remaining 10 minutes of “regular time”, is there anything you’d like to cover that we haven’t yet discussed?
[20:51] <+Justin> Yes
[20:52] <+Justin> The game has Nine elements, (each of the Ascended represent these elements) Fire, Cold, Lightning, Water, Earth, Wind, Decay, Shadow, and Light
[20:52] <+Krys> nine races, nine starting classes, nine ascended
[20:52] <+Brobot> oh oh oh I can say something!
[20:52] <+Krys> nine attributes…
[20:53] <+Brobot> The circle in the logo has 9 notches in it, one for each element!
[20:53] <+Brobot> lol
[20:53] <+Justin> lol
[20:53] <+Krys> teh great brobot has spoken!
[20:53] <~Dan> 🙂
[20:53] <+Justin> Yes it makes a nonagon
[20:53] <+Brobot> I don’t know the lore as well
[20:54] <+Justin> We shall have Justin’s story time and I will fill you in
[20:54] <+Mike> In our last few minutes of official time, here’s the Kickstarter link one last time: (Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/186567785/ascended-saga-tabletop-rpg)https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/186567785/ascended-saga-tabletop-rpg
[20:54] <+Krys> agh! but justin’s isn’t as fun as my story religion.
[20:55] <+Justin> I hope we answered some questions and entertained some people along the way
[20:55] <~Dan> Certainly!
[20:55] <~Dan> Oh, by the way, I’m also a reviewer, if you’re interested when the time comes. 🙂
[20:56] <+Krys> I also hope you guys are interested in not just gameplay but our awesome world
[20:56] <+Krys> we can set up something for you just email us so we have your information
[20:56] <+Mike> Do your reviews come with puns?
[20:56] <~Dan> Maybe… >.>
[20:56] <+Mike> <_<
[20:56] <+Justin> lol
[20:57] <~Dan> I also hope you guys will continue to hang out with us whenever you like. Quite a few game authors do on a regular basis. 🙂
[20:57] <+Krys> we are in need of reviewers, so we welcome all bloggers who run review sites or work through a review site to contact us
[20:57] <+Mike> We’re Facebook friends, too, if that works for setting something up. 🙂
[20:58] <~Dan> Sure. 🙂
[20:58] <~Dan> Thanks again for coming by, guys!
[20:58] <+Mike> Sure thing! Thanks for having us!
