[19:12] <+DWPearce> Immortelle? I saw it and I can’t say it didn’t inspire me as I was writing Set Rising. The main inspiration was a mix of research on Egypt and watching the trailer to Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I’d say those two things were a big big inpiration.
[19:13] <+DWPearce> I have always had a soft spot for Egypt and I love high tech, so to mix the two was something I jumped at when Savage Mojo asked me to write the setting.

[19:14] <~Dan> Two-part question: (1) Is Egyptian mythology the source of all supernatural weirdness in the setting, and (2) how “open” and obvious is said weirdness?
[19:16] <+DWPearce> That’s an interesting question actually. You have a direct conflict in the setting between both High Tech (Ra and his Pantheon) and Set (Who wants to keep the magical/sacrificial power of Egypt alive.) Basically Ra took the Outer Kingdoms into a Hypertech Age and Set threw his metaphysical dummy out of the pram and stormed off to a corner of reality where he built his own Pyramid with blackjack

[19:16] <+DWPearce> Seriously though, he stormed off and concocted a plan to use a reality bending magical device to reorder things so he replaces Ra as the head god of the Outer Kingdoms.
[19:17] <~Dan> So the state of technology is due to Ra & Co.?
[19:17] <+DWPearce> So Set is really all about magic and Ra, think of him as Tony Bond. James Bond meets Tony Stark with his high tech pantheon (Anubis on the front cover)
[19:18] <+DWPearce> Yeah, Ra is the driving force behind the jump in high tech.
[19:18] <~Dan> Ah, I get it: sun god? Hard-light tech?

[19:19] <~Dan> So let me tweak the question a bit: Is Ra operating in the background, and does the general public know that magic works?
[19:19] <+DWPearce> Thanks. It made sense to me to give him some really powerful tech and a distrust of magic (he’s seen what it did to Set and the Set Agents)
[19:20] <+DWPearce> Ra is very suspicious of magic and anyone in Ra’s city is encouraged to view proper magic as totally dangerous. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part the public know about magic and don’t trust it.

[19:21] <+DWPearce> So Ra will tolerate certain Healing Magic and his Hyper Sorcery. That’s about it.

[19:21] <~Dan> So everyone knows about Ra, I take it?
[19:23] <+DWPearce> Yeah. The people of Ra’s City obviously know about him, he’s the King of the Hill. Bruce Wayne/Stark up in his massive techno-pyramid selling hard-light products and being part corporate head and part playboy.
[19:23] <+DWPearce> Set’s people know about Ra and they plainly don’t like him at all. He’s the bad guy, he’s the guy who took magic from the pantheon and replaced it with something totally alien to them.

[19:24] <~Dan> I see… So what is the world as a whole like? Is this an alternate Earth, or something more exotic?
[19:26] <+DWPearce> Ah, great question. Suzerain has this concept of the Maelstrom, a boiling coloured morass of reality in which all these realms exist. Things like Supernatural Hong Kong (Shanghai) where vampires have invaded, or a gritty Noir Knights realm (American Grit) full of X-files fun and frolics. Then you have Ra’s realm which is known as Sunfire, a huge desert and city which exists in the Maelstrom
[19:26] <+DWPearce> and that’s where the Demigods will find themselves eventually as the setting kicks off.

[19:27] <~Dan> So it’s not a whole world? Just the desert and Ra’s city?
[19:28] <+DWPearce> Yeah, and Set’s hidden realm in the Maelstrom is the goal to get to. There’s room to expand the setting beyond Sunfire of course, but for the book we decided that having two places was probably a good focus. You have all of time and space as a demigod, so you can visit anywhere/anywhen/any alternate.
[19:29] <+DWPearce> For example there’s an alternate V-For-Vendetta style 800 word adventure for Set Rising on the way which I’m working on for the Primer.
[19:29] <+DWPearce> Something you can throw those 6 Pregens at.
[19:29] <~Dan> Speaking of the PCs, how powerful are demigods in Suzerain?
[19:30] <+DWPearce> This will be Soho taken over by Set’s forces and turned into a dystopia. Pretty powerful, at demigod level they’re coming into their own and they’re sort of doing things like Marvel’s Thor etc.
[19:30] <~Dan> Really? Cool.
[19:30] <+DWPearce> Which means their opponents are also going to be tougher. You can run Set Rising at a lower level of play if you want and work all the way up to demigod, it’ll take a while but it’ll be fun.
[19:31] <+DWPearce> Yeah. It is kind of like a more ‘in your face’ Scion to be honest.

[19:31] <~Dan> How do you keep the reality-hopping in check when you’re trying to focus on your particular setting?
[19:32] <~Dan> I mean, is there anything keeping demigods from saying, “F*** this noise… I’m off to Noir Knights!”?
[19:32] <+DWPearce> Well, Set Rising has a massive Plot Point Campaign that’s all about stopping Set. However there are Savage Tales which are mini-bites/adventures across the whole of time and space. These let your demigods literally explore numerous places/realms where Set’s Agents have to be stopped. In the case of Set Rising, if they let Set win then things are going to turn really bad for them.
[19:33] <+DWPearce> They could visit Noir Knights though for a while and come back and face off with Set’s Agents. We have this cooncept of travel through the Maelstrom which lets you jump around without fancy gates or any kind of technology – you find a weak point in reality, exploit it and open a portal from A->B

[19:34] <~Dan> Does either side have “monsters” at their disposal?
[19:35] <+DWPearce> Well Ra has his agents and demigods on his side. Set has a whole slew of sorcery and nasty beasties he can hurl at the good guys. Sand Demons and other tricks.
[19:36] <+DWPearce> A lot of Set’s Agents are sorcerers and we’re talking Doc Savage style magic with writhing snakes and horrible lurking mist.

[19:37] <+DWPearce> One thing I wanted to talk about as well with Suzerain in general, not just Set Rising. Is the concept that the demigods have one bit of ‘something’ cool on their person at all times.
[19:37] <~Dan> Please do!
[19:38] <+DWPearce> It could be a pocket watch you’ve had for years, or a golden ring with a ruby in it. This is actually a piece of something special, something inherantly gifted by the gods…a spirit if you will. We call them Telesma and they grow in power with your characters.
[19:39] <~Dan> Huh. That’s clever. Do they adapt in any way to the local reality?
[19:39] <+DWPearce> They can talk to you, they have their own personalities and they help your character as they learn more about being a demigod. They can find portals, help you translate languages and create a pocket realm for the heroes to call their own.
[19:41] <+DWPearce> There are numerous powers/edges that the Telesama can gain as you level up. So you can have ones which can appear to be something from that reality. They can also help you in your current reality, they can literally let you understand things about a tech level you might not get. So you come from say 2012, you end up in Ra’s realm, everything is SO tech orientated and you’re overwhelmed. The
[19:41] <+DWPearce> Telesama can smooth that transition and give you the headsup.
[19:41] <+DWPearce> This is something core to Suzerain itself and in Set Rising I added a bunch of new Telesama edges.
[19:41] <~Dan> That’s very helpful, both mechanically and in terms of the setting.
[19:41] <+DWPearce> Including one which lets you throw your chosen weapon and have it return to you. Like Thor’s hammer.
[19:41] <+DWPearce> Yeah
[19:42] <+DWPearce> It is also a lovely GM/story tool since you can play the Telesama as a GM. Or you can put a player to the right/left of the player in charge of the Telesama, like Wraith did with Shadows.

[19:43] <~Dan> Is all of the magic in the setting of the nastybad sort? You addressed this to some extent earlier, but I’m not 100% clear.
[19:44] <+DWPearce> There are some really nasty Set based spells, and Ra wouldn’t be happy if he caught a demigod using that. There’s also the Sand Healers who use sand and so forth to perform healing, so they can close wounds etc. It hurts the victim though, a lot.
[19:44] <+DWPearce> I wrote a bunch of different magic for the setting, so there’s helpful and nasty spells in there.
[19:46] <~Dan> Are there PC sorcerers?
[19:47] <+DWPearce> Yeah. Those are Ra’s Hyper-Sorcerers, he gets away with magic in that regard since he’s using technology to emulate the forces of magic.

[19:55] <~Dan> Okay, let’s talk First Doc then. Any general observations first?
[19:56] <+DWPearce> About the First Doctor sourcebook. I suppose the biggest thing I have to say about that was I was absolutely stunned when Cubicle 7 asked me to work on it. I am a huge Doctor Who fan and apart from Tom Baker who was my Doctor, Hartnell is where it all began in a Junkyard in 1963.
[19:57] <+DWPearce> So suddenly I had a huge responsibility to work on a book which would be the first of 11 Doctor Who sourcebooks.
[19:57] <+DWPearce> (Done)
[19:57] <~Dan> That’s a pretty big responsibility, yes. 🙂
[19:57] <~Dan> And an honor!
[19:58] <+DWPearce> Yeah, a massive one.
[19:58] <+DWPearce> It was going to be a box set as well, so imagine the grin on my face when the BBC allowed C7 to produce books.
[19:58] <~Dan> Indeed!
[19:59] <+DWPearce> The First Doctor book, that’s something I can’t ever get over in terms of just how awesome it is to have been involved in that.
[19:59] <~Dan> I’ll bet!
[20:00] <~Dan> So what was the trick in capturing the feel of the 1st Doctor?

[20:01] <+DWPearce> The First Doctor is far more cerebral in terms of content. This is where it all began and the show started out as Edutainment, that’s the idea which was pitched to the BBC originally. So you have stories which are essentially the Doctor/Companions interacting with the backdrop of history. It was really important to capture that in the sourcebook.
[20:03] <+mosser> And, it wasn’t until close to the end of the Third Doctor’s tenure that they risked a story going back to a historical period.
[20:03] <+DWPearce> Yep.
[20:03] <+DWPearce> I spent hours watching old episodes for research, and reading the scripts of episodes which had been lost. It was a lot of work but it paid off capturing the Hartnell era. Yet I’d have to make sure that it didn’t become a borefest for a non-Who fan who perhaps wanted just to dive in and see what all the fuss was about.
[20:04] <+DWPearce> So it was a tightrope in that regard.
[20:06] <+DWPearce> In Hartnell you had stories like ‘Unearthly Child’ to capture in x-amount of text and try to make it so it didn’t just read as a long-winded entry to the episode, with a list of bullet-point events.
[20:07] <+DWPearce> I wrote various takes on the design for the episodes and then the talented Gareth Hanrahan stepped in and smoothed things with his eye for what’s perfect for a book. Gareth really is a great Line Developer.

[20:11] <+DWPearce> Well, you have the Aztecs, where Barbara (one of the Doctor’s companions) thinks she can change Aztec society for the better. It doesn’t pan out though and she finds out they can’t be changed, they are Aztec and they’re going to behave like that regardless of what she does.
[20:12] <+DWPearce> Then there’s the Reign of Terror, where the TARDIS ends up in 1794.
[20:12] <~Dan> Almost sounds like early Stargate SG:1, in a way.
[20:13] <+DWPearce> This is the time of the French Revolution and the Doctor soon gets involved.

[20:13] <+DWPearce> Of course you also have the Daleks and WOTAN 🙂

[20:14] <~Dan> So this may seem like a dumb question, but do you attempt to address the lower special effects budget and tech?
[20:15] <+DWPearce> Not really, I mean I talk about the old Type 40 tech compared to say the newer TARDIS designs and so on. But essentially the Doctor is the Doctor and the show never comes into the text.
[20:15] <+DWPearce> the BBC have this thing, they don’t like anything which treats the show as ‘a show’. So there’s never been an adventure where the Doctor bumps into actors playing the roles of the Doctor and his companions.
[20:16] <+DWPearce> So in Hartnell’s era, you have the TARDIS and a few other Hartnell specific gadgets…no sonic though, that didn’t show up until later on.
[20:17] <~Dan> Do you provide stats for the Daleks of that era?
[20:17] <+DWPearce> Yep, and the Cybermen.
[20:18] <+DWPearce> Even the old Doc’s TARDIS
[20:19] <~Dan> How hard was it to figure out their capabilities?
[20:20] <~Dan> (Relative to the 10th/11th Doctor versions, I mean.)

[20:22] <+DWPearce> Later on they work around this, but for the Dead City (The Daleks) they have to be in contact with that flooring.

[20:29] <+DWPearce> Not really. This was the ground on which Doctor Who was built, so I just wrote about the era as the information was presented in various books, scripts and episode synopsis books.

[20:36] <+DWPearce> Yeah sure. I have a few things in the pipeline beyond Nightfall. I am fond of 13th Age, so I’ll be looking to use that for a setting based on my novel/short story world as well as a 13th Age powered Swords and Sorcery setting which involves piracy. Think: Pirates of Dark Water meets Conan.
[20:37] <+DWPearce> I do a lot of short stories for anthologies, so I’ve got a lot of those in the works or close to being published too.
[20:37] <+DWPearce> There’s something BIG coming to Suzerain I can’t talk about but it involves one of my city settings in a HUGE way so I’m stoked about that in the coming months too.

[20:38] <+DWPearce> I’ve been playtesting concepts for Swords and Sorcery pirates using 13th Age with my local group and it’s been going very well so far.

[20:40] <+DWPearce> So far I have been looking at 13 S&S Icons who take the place of the gods of a S&S world. So you have an Icon who covers the sea/sea based things and an Icon of Dark Magic (Sorcery) and so on. I haven’t thought about dragons yet, since they don’t seem to appear overly much in core S&S.

[20:41] <+DWPearce> I can tell you that the Suzerain thing involves my city known as Shadeside, just not how.

[20:43] <+DWPearce> Shadeside is… well, it has elements of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman meets Tim Burton’s twisted mind. It’s got a little Planescape in there as well. A huge city of the forgotten and the dead, with tons of NPCs who have been brought through across time and space. Shadeside is a living city, a sentient city and it has reasons for everything it does.

[20:45] <+DWPearce> I was originally going to release it stand-alone as a city setting. But, Savage Mojo fell in love with it and it’s now appearing as big star in an upcoming superthing.

[20:54] <+DWPearce> This one’s called Spinward Asasssin and it’s the tale of a killer in a sci-fi universe. A bit of cyberpunk, nanoware, bioware and even some 1940’s 50’s aesthetic to one of the planet colonies.
